Rough Sketch to Final process GIF of Princess Zelda from the Animated Series! Now that things are slow, I'm hoping to transition to more of an educational role and help popularize some proven effective illustration techniques to make sure the next generation of digital artists have all the tools they need to survive in these unprecedented times... I audibly gasped at your Totk Zelda drawing and most recent Link drawing!! Your art is genuinely so cool and I love how you use colours :D

Thank you!! I'm actually a little colorblind (but i still see color, just not perfectly) so getting compliments on color is awesome for me. Primarily in my storyboarding day job i'm just doing black and white sketches so apart from my fanart, i get almost no color practice in my work.

For my more involved "cinematic" pieces i'm using a different methodical coloring and lighting process which is difficult to parse succinctly. But conversely, for my color sketch portraits you mentioned, I'm using a photoshop gradient map, which is essentially a dynamic color filter laid on top of my black and white sketches.

The gradient map settings look like this; if you have a cool black and white photograph or drawing (needs to have a high dynamic range of lighting) try giving the gradient map a try. It's pre-AI tech so I don't consider it cheating but i'm honestly surprised it's not more widespread. This technique was shown to me many many years ago by a director client and friend of mine, as a means to quickly colorize storyboards. Appropriately, he told me he learned a lot of great color tips like this from old Tumblr tutorials :) Please share with someone who you know loves to draw in black and white but struggles with color (like me!!)

Art process Timelapse for Sketch Portrait of Link!

Sometimes I have a solid “vision” for what I intend to create, and other times I just wing it and trust my instincts. In this case I knew I wanted to draw an intense portrait of Link, and that was it. Probably helped I was in a bad mood haha. I had some game reference handy from twilight Princess to make sure I stayed more or less accurate to the costume but the pose and lighting are from my imagination.

In this process you can see I push and pull with a lot of details on his appearance. He’s such an iconic figure but he’s also always getting redesigned as well so it was fun to explore just how badass I could depict him. There’s obviously some self-insert stuff going on here too LOL.

Once I decided to have him aiming the clawshot/hook shot at the camera, it all snapped together thematically, and the rest drew itself basically.

The color at the end is via a gradient map which is kind of a cheap photoshop hack but there is some art to it and the color contrast really heightens the drama.

BOTH! lol!!

So the Zelda Fanart will definitely continue (i still have 12 more pieces i'm planning on finishing) BUT I'm also opening up my focus and eyeing other fandoms to make fanart for. Specifically I'm super interested in Metroid, Starfox, Street Fighter 2, Castlevania, Mega Man, Mortal Kombat, GoldenAxe, Ninja Gaiden, TMNT, maybe a little He-Man, and definitely some manga and anime too! Maybe some commissions here and there. So stay tuned for more cool stuff :)

I REALLY appreciate all the compliments and support and sharing and help from everyone- I love real art by real humans, and I want everyone to set a good example and bravely keep creating and sharing, so the AI bros don't suck up all the oxygen on the internet.
