can i ask what u guys were looking for in staff members? 🧐 think i got rejected but thats ok!

So first of all: CHECK YOUR SPAM FOLDER! I have Tried to keep track of whether everyone who was accepted has joined the discord but as at least one person from today can attest to, I haven't been great about it. Everyone should have received an email, and if you haven't, you can DM me at theminecraftbee to ask! But if you haven't seen it, it is almost certainly in your spam folder. Multiple people have told me that's where the email went!

Beyond that: I was looking for a few things. Relevant experience, examples I appreciated, indications that they were enthusiastic. But generally it was tight--there were some people I picked basically off of a vibes check because we could only pick but so many people! I want to emphasize again that not being selected for the staff team has nothing to do with you as a person, but instead is just a function of having so many applications. Decisions had to be made somewhere! I appreciate everyone who applied and basically everyone had something going for them!

Just wondering what the contestant applications will look like. Will we need to submit an application video?

Yes, you will need to submit a video. The video requirements are as follows:

The video must be no more than 2 minutes. (I mean it; this is a hard limit that I will give only a small amount of grace on, because if we even get as many applications as there were for staff that will already be three hours of footage.)

The video MUST demonstrate your current speaking mic audio quality in some way. So like, talk in the video. That's all.

The video MUST take place in Minecraft, and cannot include any IRL elements that aren't your voice (including facecam--turn off your facecam for this!).

You should use your video to in some way demonstrate why you think you'd be a good contestant. Get creative!

Additionally, there is a long form questionnaire you will answer. You will be asked to rank various of your skills on a scale from 1-10, and then given a number of long-form answers to give. Some of these questions are intentionally sort of trick questions; don't worry about it and answer however you feel is honest to you, we're using them to give us further gauges on your personality.

And what will happen after a contestant is voted off?

we’ll be looking for a variety of types of minecraft players, both those with specific skills and without! we’ll be looking for charismatic players, and in general people who seem like they’d be interesting to watch bounce off each other. as far as concrete things, audio quality is something we’ll be looking for—it doesn’t have to be perfect but it has to be good enough to fix in post. but generally it’s going to be a combination of in-game skills as answered on the application, the type of player you come across as being, and whatever extra “pizazz” those eventual contestants have! once again want to emphasize we’re looking for a variety of players and spreads of skills, as well—one single type of “optimal” skill set or playstyle to be selected won’t exist. ideally, we’d have 16 totally unique blends!

as for what happens after a contestant is voted off… that depends. at minimum, they will be asked to keep both their participation and placement secret until those are revealed. they will have an exit interview, some clip of which will appear in the rite of passage. they may or may not be offered a few further roles. if they’re voted off pre-merge, then that’s it; they’re done. if they’re voted off post-merge, then they will remain around, and be asked to return to set to watch each tribal council, and eventually vote on the jury for the final winner. pre-merge votes off will be allowed to talk to each other, but will be sequestered from the jury. the jury is allowed to talk to each other, but also remains otherwise “sequestered”.

also we may or may not make a ponderosa for them that is FULLY dependent on time and I’m leaning towards “not” looking at some of the other build team plans but maybe???

In this show, bold and brave contestants will be pitted against each other in a game of wits in order to see who has the ability to become sole survivor. There will be drama! There will be friendships! There will be betrayals! And there will, of course, be myself, your lovely host SecondFifth.

We are still preparing everything we need to go live–expect more information soon! But for now...

Will the applications still be open tomorrow? As in, does it close at the start of the day or the end?

Also, do you know when we're likely to get the emails? And is there a chance to lose a spot if someone takes too long to respond, and would that mean people who didn't get in might get accepted later instead?

i plan on having applications open all day tomorrow, so they close at the end of the day! they will either close at midnight est or whenever i wake up on wednesday, depending on if i pass out before i intended to close them, but assume that they close at 11:59 PM EST tomorrow.

emails will go out... at some point after that! a lot of people have sent examples i need time to go over. i hope to have emails out by the end of the week, for both acceptances and rejections.

i will make an attempt to contact both by email and tumblr the accepted applications, but if they don't get back to me within a few days, i will potentially go to backup options, yes, although if it's only one or two people i will PROBABLY just continue as i am rather than go to backups.

If our staff application is declined will we be notified? Relatedly; will those who apply to staff as their first choice but are not accepted be allowed to apply as contestants?

i will do my best to send every email either an acceptance or rejection! however, i'll only follow-up on tumblr if you don't respond to an acceptance, so if you don't check your email you will miss it. so check your email!

as for the second part: yes, if you apply as staff and are rejected, you are still clear to apply as a contestant! you have not, at that point, gotten to any information you can't have as a contestant, after all.

do we have to have our tumblrs associated with the event? i try to generally keep mine separate from the rest of my online identity

sort of. to apply? yes. i want the backup contact for if email does not work, and for contestants later, i want to be able to have one more data point towards "what kind of player do i think you'll be". that said, you do not have to have it publicly associated with the event. i want it for our records (it can be a sideblog it doesn't have to be your main i just have to be able to contact it), but when we put together the credits, you can be credited with whatever you want publicly.

would you guys be interested in having an animated teaser/trailer made for when the show releases? i'd love to make one for you

that sounds really cool! if you want to offer that as an additional skill on a production application, feel free--i was already planning on having the editors make some kind of trailer once the show is ready, so i would consider this an editor position. then we will consider it!

For the survivor SMP, how would you feel about artists potentially offering their services for thumbnails and stuff from players? I'm not confident enough about my composition skills yet to offer it as paid work, but it looks really interesting and I'd love to be able to volunteer my time and skills otherwise if I'm not chosen as a player/applicant!

if you have that to offer alongside another position, i wouldn't mind it! i already have the artists onboard i suspect i'll actually need for the art assets, though, which is why it isn't a role i'm actively seeking. additional skills aren't bad though!

(Also an addendum to that last ask: I'd love to be able to volunteer for captions but would like to try applying as a player first. Would you ever consider a second round of staff/production applications for post-production tasks like captions?)

also answering this separately to say: so i did this in this order on purpose. not just because we need staff before we can go live to players, not just because i want to get even post-production stuff live as we go if possible to save time, but because this is liable to be a slightly grueling project. FUN! but grueling. i don't want people who want to be players and on-camera more than they want to help with production to sign up for production if that's not like... their first choice, if that makes sense? i don't want production, the thing that will likely be the most difficult part of this, to be people's backup. so unless things are desperate, probably not!

Have you already got contestants or will that be the next application to be put out?

I’m interested in both (and i know it’s one or the other) and I can’t decide

We do not have contestants yet! Contestant applications will go out once we are much closer to being ready to film–expect it to be at least a month.

This is a good time to note, however, if you're looking at this and want to prepare a contestant application, that one of the requirements will be an audition video of a maximum of two minutes long, which must feature a reasonable amount of your voiceover and taken solely in Minecraft (so no IRL things like a facecam or IRL segments, only Minecraft footage). It should also be something that you think shows off why you'd be interesting as a contestant! So if you are looking at production applications and going "man, but I think I want to be a contestant more", you can get a head start on that if you'd like.
