It’s interesting that Nami is a misunderstood character because people aren’t trying to understand her character her love for money/treasure and soft spot for female marines stems from her childhood trauma. Money and earning money not only not only became life or death as not having enough money is what made Arlong kill her mother, a former marine Bellemere but it also made her deeply attached to money because it also represented freedom to her as she worked as a young child trying to “buy back” her home from Arlong. She deeply cares about children because she didn’t get to have a happy childhood she has a soft spot for female marines because Bellemere took her and her sister in love them and raised them and ultimately gave up her life for them. She doesn’t love money more than her friends or people in general and her love of money is by no means connected to greed unlike most money loving characters.

She’s also not a replaceable character in the crew or to Luffy as she not only the guide the them but she also represents the heart of Luffy as well as the straw hats. She’s the navigator buts she’s also a skilled and talented cartographer as well a meteorologist in a way. When Luffy has to make tough decisions about the straw hats future she’s often the one backing up the emotional aspect of the situation rather than the logical one Zoro is representing. Both sides are always needed. She also can keep them both in check or pull back the reigns on them without having to be a powerhouse physically or powers wise herself and many dudebro anime fans on their power fantasy bs irrationally hate her for it. Regardless Luffy knows her through and through and like Arlong knew Nami was something special and unique even before Arlong told Luffy this that’s why Luffy insisted on having Nami as his navigator and no one else.
