Love the concept of Bad Thing that provides protection from Even Worse Thing. This villan has dibs on killing me someday, so they’re not going to let anyone else do it. Person has a permanent illness that’s super hostile to any other type of infection. Lawful evil tyrant absolutely PISSED at chaotic evil invader killing their subjects. Person has been cursed by the gods but the curse supersedes all other hexes and magical ills. This shit absolutely charges my batteries.

Fanfic writers, I am begging you- even with dialogue that is clearly attributed, start a new paragraph with each new speaker. The reader shouldn't have to wait until after the dialogue is spoken to understand who is saying it.

Even if it's one word?

Yes.

But it makes things so long!

Great! Your stories will be the king of scrolling, a feast of thumbs, and a gentle stroke across a phone screen.

This convention exists for a reason! Each new paragraph should be a new idea or a new speaker. It's a shortcut for our brains to know that we have jumped across a gap and into the unknown, and you as the writer are about to explain to me where we have jumped to, but at least I know we are somewhere different.

Please practice this! I see so many good fanfic I want to read but except for this huge, glaring issue and it becomes impossible to understand what is happening.

Basic rules for analysing fiction, an incomprehensive list jotted down in a hurry:

The protagonist isn’t always right

The protagonist isn’t always good

The protagonist isn’t always written to be relatable or likeable

The narrator isn’t always right

The narrator isn’t always good

The narrator isn’t always telling the truth

The narrator isn’t always the author

The protagonist’s moral compass, the narrator’s moral compass and the author’s moral compass are three entirely different things that only occasionally overlap

Pay attention to what characters do and not just what they say

Pay special attention when what the characters do is at odds with what they say

A lot of the time the curtains are blue for a reason. If they aren’t, you should read better books

Okay, so my random train of thought re what happens next is something like this:

So Dick basically shuts down like he just broke the code he has been raised on since he was nine and swore to uphold as a vigilante.

but the Joker is gone now, for good, no more waiting anxiously till Arkham's revolving door let's him back out to maim and murder innocents again and Dick can't help the whisper of satisfaction in his chest that he managed to get justice for the little brother he'd lost and the relief that he saved Tim from the same fate even as the feelings make him feel sick to his stomach that he's having positive emotions in relation to him beating a man to death, even a man as monstrous as the joker. So Dick shuts down, he withdraws from everyone, holing up in his apartment and spiralling.

Meanwhile Bruce is beside himself because while it was Dick who did the deed, he can't convince himself he wouldn't have done the same if he'd gotten there first. And he's also blaming himself for the whole situation as well; from Joker escaping to Tim being captured and to Dick being made a murderer. And Bruce is also shutting everyone out which is having knock-on effect of Dick thinking Bruce despises him for breaking the Rule and Tim thinking Bruce blames him for the whole situation.

Speaking of Tim, he's mentally and emotionally tying himself in knots over blaming himself for not being a good enough Robin to avoid being captured in yhe first place but that also in his self appointed role of preventing Batman's brutality leading to fatalities he feels he failed to prevent the same for his predecessor/older brother and with both Dick and Bruce withdrawing he feels like they also blame him.

Barbara i feel would be the one to reach out to Tim, partly out of her own reawakened trauma re what yhe joker did to Jason but also to herself and partly that with Dick/Nightwing vanishing and Bruce/Batman being barely present she's having to snag any Gotham based vigilante to try and keep on top of the sudden crime wave of criminals wanting to step up into the clown Prince of crimes spot. So she has Tim running alongside the birds of prey to keep Gotham from detonating. And while Tim's Robin wasn't as chatty as Dicks or Jason's she can tell he's more troubled by everything than he's letting on by how nearly dead silent he is but she wasn't as close to Tim before everything and she's run off her feet trying to manage everything so tries to kill two birds with one stone by sending Tim to do a wellness check on Dick who's been ignoring her calls and messages and hoping they'll be able to help each other.

Tim visiting Dick sees how badly the older male is doing, barely sleeping and doing the absolute minimum to take care of himself and has fallen sick, that Tim takes it upon himself to help. (And if Dick mistakes him for Jason in his delirium then Tim will take that to his grave...or maybe not his own)

Now if yhis is after Jason gets dunked id have him visiting Gotham to verify Talias info only to be confused and worried at the stories about the joker being dead, Nightwing not being seen since and Batman barely making an appearance meanwhile the new Robin is far quieter and more hesitant than he expected from his replacement and more often seen trailing members of the birds of prey (and maybe a couple of stories that had to be fake of him seen working alongside Catwoman? (I like the idea of Selina also being worried but the only bat she can access is Tim who's tight-lipped so she just helps him out))

And maybe he follows Tim when he sees him leaving a strange apartment building well after good Robins should have called it a night and sees him making his way to Jason's own gravestone where he kneels in the grass in silence before breaking down in apologies that he couldn't keep his family safe and together like he wanted, that he couldn't live up to Jason and be a good Robin.

And while Jason was all fired up to hate this kid for taking his place all he can see is a kid who narrowly escaped his own fate and is now blaming himself for not being able to hold up under others grief and trauma and is having to rapidly re-evaluate his plans for the rather fucked up family reunion he had planned.

(Look, im a sucker for fics where Jason adopts Tim so that's where this would be going of course but in this case he also adopts Dick and maybe lectures Bruce about the consequences of shutting out the people he cares about when they're traumatised (Garzonas and Ethiopia ringing any bells?))

...well this is a mess but its where my brain went?

Want an AU where Dick beats the Joker to death and when Bruce tries to resuscitate him (to save Dick from the burden of having taken a life), it doesn’t work. Just like, he tries! It doesn’t take! The Joker is dead as a doornail at Nightwing’s hands and now the Gotham vigilante community has to deal with that!

Do they cover it up? Because ostensibly in-universe the Bats no-kill rule is part of how they’re able to operate in Gotham without their unmasking being a high priority for law enforcement. It also, I assume, makes them a lower priority for mafias to deal with than rival criminal orgs are. If word gets out that one of the Bats deliberately killed someone, that changes the entire board.

Does Dick try to turn himself in like he later does with the Blockbuster incident? How would that shake out? Yeah it’s a game changer, but also, out of everyone he could have killed, it was the Joker. No one wants to arrest him. No one wants to run that trial. Prosecuting the guy to finally kill the Joker would be a public relations nightmare for the Gotham city government.

Plus there’s bound to be some complicated feelings for Tim about this. Dick beats the Joker to death because he thinks the fucker murdered Tim! The kid who became Robin to prevent Bruce from beating people to death! Tim isn’t going to grieve the Joker any more than any other Gothamite, but the particular circumstance is a clusterfuck.

I’m not entirely sure where in the timeline this incident is relative to Jason’s journey. I know it’s after his resurrection, but is it before or after Talia heals him further with the Lazarus Pit? Because there’s a difference between being on a path of revenge and suddenly having to reassess all your decisions, and straight up coming back to yourself and immediately finding out your murderer is dead at your brother’s hands.

There are just so many complications here and I want to explore them.
