Let's Talk About Noah Schnapp
In light of everything that's happened in the last few days—namely Netflix releasing its first teaser for Stranger Things Season 5—many are returning to Stranger Things spaces online here and elsewhere for the first time in months. Maybe years. So, it's time to have this conversation again, because many people weren't here when some of us were having this conversation in the lull between content; and we're due for an update.
Buckle up—this is going to be long. I intend for this to be a mega post on the whole situation in so far as I can cover it, with receipts and screenshots.
The Conversation Around Noah
Put bluntly—the vitriol around Noah Schnapp has become dangerously insane. It's been that way for 2 years, but the renewed spotlight on Stranger Things, especially as Noah is set to take center stage in a Will Byers-centric season, has revived some of the worst elements of the conversation.
"What do you mean?", you may be asking. Well, I think it might just be better to show you:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is just a sampling. If I showed you every tweet — every post — every video I've seen with this rhetoric, I'd need another medium to do it. A tumblr blog alone couldn't contain it all. But I take it you see my point now.
How Did Things Get This Way?
There are people on this app and on #that app who will say this behavior/treatment is warranted. They'll tell you that Noah is a "genocide supporter." That he "cheered for the deaths of Palestinian babies." That he "celebrated as people were being murdered." But none of this is true.
As a reminder, this was what Noah actually said—his very first comments on the matter—right after the Hamas attack that happened on October 7, 2023:
Tumblr media
Important to note:
"...we will hope and pray for safety, justice, liberation, and self determination in Palestine."
and
"...we will say a Jewish prayer for peace for all Israelis and Palestinians."
That is the literal antithesis of support for a genocide or the wholesale slaughter of anyone.
The very next thing to happen was the infamous "sticker video" about which the most lies have been told, so let's debunk them one by one:
He did not make the stickers.
He did not wear the stickers.
He did not hand out the stickers.
He did not hold up the stickers.
He did not even touch the stickers.
He did not post the video on any social anywhere.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've posted a pair of screenshots here that give you the gist in lieu of the video itself, but you can Google the video and watch the entire thing to see that I'm telling the truth.
What actually happened was that Noah was taken to a restaurant by a pair of influencers who were his guides while on a school-sponsored trip to Israel. Both were significantly older than him, were responsible for the video in question, were the only ones in it (aside from the waitress) to actually touch the stickers in question... and yet? Noah bore the brunt of the hate that ensued. When the backlash came, they abandoned him and left him to the wolves. (And perhaps because of that, he no longer associates with either one of them, nor follows any related social media accounts—all of which he was required to follow in the first place as terms of going on the trip through his school.)
Noah had just come out of the closet earlier that year and was 18 years-old. He would only turn 19 years-old in the ensuing weeks.
He has addressed these events several times. Most famous was the TikTok that he made explaining his actual position (that he doesn't want anyone, Palestinian or Israeli, to die). Less famous were remarks he made to fans on Snapchat:
Tumblr media
I'll post his remarks here for those who can't read the text:
Hey guys! I appreciate you reaching out. To give you context, I did not post this language or this sticker. I was at breakfast with friends, it happened to be an Israeli cafe, and a girl was handing out stickers. Someone photographed me and posted and tagged me. As you guys know better than most people, social media can be used however people want to use it. I understand the weight of the situation and take it very seriously. I have friends of friends who are currently being held hostage in Gaza right now. My friends kids were killed in the massacre at the Israeli music festival. Standing up against this terrorism is important to me and why I made my statement after the attack. As one of the only few Jewish people with a platform, I absolutely think it's important to share my message about hatred for Jews around the world right now. However, everyone online is obviously twisting everything and saying I support genocide and am Islamophobic which is obviously entirely false and never have I stated either of those things. Seeing what is happening to the innocent people in Palestine pains me so much and I wish it would stop. I fully support everyone in Palestine as I said in my post on Instagram. One of my best friends in college is Palestinian and we talk about this issue allllll the time and agree on most things. I think people on social media are just animalistic right now so it's hard to even chime in because they just rip me apart so now I'm staying out of it.
I'll let that stand on it's own. I think it provides the context behind his remarks, the situation with the video/stickers, and his actual views versus how social media portrays his views. It also explains why he hasn't said anything else in almost 2 years.
The key takeaway: He was speaking out against antisemitism and the attack on Jewish people on October 7 and he supports an end to what is happening in Gaza and fully supports Palestinians. He literally says it.
And this support, by the way, has been corroborated by his own actions and the word of mouth from Palestinian organizations he has contributed to:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What Has Happened Since?
It would be easier to list the things that haven't happened; but I'll try anyways:
Noah has been called antisemitic slurs; gay slurs and targeted with gay stereotypes; been compared to antisemitic caricatures; he's been threatened with death and had posts go viral fantasizing about his brutal murder; his family has been threatened; he's been threatened with rape and sexual abuse; there are massive accounts on Twitter that doxxed his location while he was filming Season 5—particularly targeting him when he was alone; he's been hacked, had personal pictures leaked; he's had lies spread about his treatment of his cast mates (all of whom have spoken out and said that they've loved him at some point since, making these claims unequivocally false.
Here are a few examples:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, I can only post a sample. I hope that sample is enough to get the message across.
It's hard to overstate how cataclysmic this has been. Obviously, he's recovered and healed a lot since the initial incident; but the damage done needs to be acknowledged. These attacks drove him into a dark place by his own admission. He talked about needing therapy on his (now deleted) private spam TikTok account. And they are starting up yet again.
And Then There's the Fandom
The Stranger Things fandom in the wake of all this has been an irritating place to be. Not just because of the above behavior but because of the blanket hypocrisy.
The shipping sub-fandoms in particular have been rank with antisemitism and homophobia—even the Byler fandom, which is predominantly queer. People have:
A) Taken pre-Stranger Things photos—like his baby pictures or pictures with his family—to use as part of their content, their profile pictures, their banners, their fan art, their fan edits, etc.—violating his and his family's privacy for "Will" all while calling him "ugly," a "fag," and lobbing the above-listed threats at him. B) Tried to recast him with a fan cast. These fan casts are almost never Jewish actors, you'll notice. In fact, there's someone on this very app that recast Will Byers as himself. This is gross and absurd. Will Byers is intrinsically tied to Noah Schnapp. Tied to his identities as a Jewish person and a gay man. Tied to his experiences being a character he helped bring to life during his formative years. C) Persist in stanning or support his cast mates despite the fact that they continue to associate with him. This, in particular, is gross hypocrisy. If you're going to be mad at Noah Schnapp for being in a restaurant around stickers you object to—guilt by proximity/association, in other words—those SAME standards should apply to his cast mates, who continue to hang out with him outside of work, state that they love him, and post him on their social medias. I have a whole post about that here.
Instead, the cast is continually afforded blanket immunity while he is singularly targeted for continued abuse and harassment.
It should give the fandom some pause that openly pro-Palestine actors like Maya Hawke not only continue to hang out with him; but in her Instagram story, even stated that she misses it (check the link above for a screenshot of said story). She wouldn't do that if she thought he somehow supported mass-murder; and she knows him way better than any one reading this blog. That goes for the rest of them, too.
They know him better than you. They know his moral compass and what he believes. And they haven't abandoned him and obviously aren't going to. So, are you going to stick to your guns and apply your anger evenly; or maybe consider that you don't have the full picture?
So, Why Care?
I get this in my Asks so often. "Why do you care?" "He's a celebrity." "He don't know you." "He's not your pookie."
I know. It's not about that.
Yes, full disclosure, I am obviously a fan of Noah's. Have been since the show started. And no it's not because I'm gay and he's gay or because he plays my favorite character in Stranger Things.
Like many of his fans, I've spent the last decade seeing his lives on Instagram and TikTok, seeing his fan interactions, watching his vlogs and videos, and I've come to respect him as a human being quite apart from Will Byers or his role as an actor. Fundamentally, I really believe he is a kind and caring human being. The word of mouth from everyone who knows or has met him bares this out—and, yes, he's even been kind to me in the few conversations we've had.
Tumblr media
This is only one example from Instagram during The First Shadow premiere this year; but I think it encapsulates what I like about Noah most. He's kind. He goes out of his way to be kind. He does things he doesn't have to do, contractually or just in general, for the sake of being kind. He always has been.
He's also stood up for a plethora of causes. Black Lives Matters, trans rights, the rights of women. He's known to be his cast mates' biggest supporter—and they'll tell you as much, too.
Tumblr media
But quite apart from my personal feelings about him and more importantly: this is wrong.
Antisemitism is wrong. Homophobia is wrong. Both kill. Still, to this day. As I am sitting in my kitchen writing this, the news just broke that an Indigenous gay man and a celebrity was shot dead in front of his husband—after having his home burned down and dogs burned alive—in the United States. Yesterday, news broke that a gathering of peaceful Jewish protesters (which included children and the elderly) demanding the release of hostages still held by Hamas was firebombed in Colorado. Luckily, they all survived, but six people were injured in that attack.
Violence and bigotry are ascendent everywhere right now. Minority communities are being targeted. Normalizing the behavior I've described and shown above kills marginalized people. Regardless of your feeling about Noah as a person or celebrity, normalizing the violent and bigoted remarks, tweets, and behavior towards him harms Jewish and LGBTQIA+ people—all of us.
And just as an example of that, I give you the treatment Finn Wolfhard is now receiving just for the "crime" of shaving his head and being deemed no longer conventionally attractive by the fandom:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, the general audience found out about Finn's Jewish heritage and now he's a target, too.
And this fandom is at fault for it.
You cannot normalize bigotry towards one person and expect it to stay contained to that one person. It will always harm everyone in that community. Finn Wolfhard—or any other actor/actress—being your favorite is not going to spare him from the consequences of a discourse you started.
ALL antisemitism and ALL homophobia needs to be called out. The people who insist it's okay that they do that for ANY reason—regardless of if they themselves are LGBTQIA+ or not—need to be ejected from the fandom and never let back in.
Noah Schnapp is a human being. He does not deserve this treatment. No one does. No one is saying you have to like him or even care about him. But you SHOULD care that this is how he's being treated and the impact it is having on others. The impact on Jewish people. The impact on queer people. Standing up and saying that does not mean you support genocide or murder or bigotry of any kind. Quite the opposite, in fact.
I am a person with left-leaning values. I'm tired of those values being spat on and dragged through the mud by people who think THIS is activism or is in any way helping a cause. It's not. All it is doing is perpetuating harm on a real person and real communities—queer and Jewish alike. And it needs to stop.
Related Blogs:
I've compiled some related blogs that expand on other elements of the situation that I've mentioned above in greater detail. This post was already long enough. I'll be updating this as more content comes out.

Season 2 Mike definitely saw Max as a love rival for Will
Another Byler from Mike Wheeler's POV analysis—(Unrequited love trope edition).
Walk with me.
Sometimes I think about how when the party went trick-or-treating Mike specifically told Will that he, "should have checked with him" first before letting Max join them.
Tumblr media
It's just a very peculiar moment. Why Will?
Even Will was confused by this, lol.
We know that Mike doesn't like Max in season 2 (for reasons we'll look into more), but why did he make this Will's problem/ responsibility? Especially after only knowing of her existence for 2 days at this point.
He wasn't angry at Lucas or Dustin—or at least, he didn't expect them to come to him for permission—otherwise he would have said something to them, too.
It was Will who he felt betrayed by and upset with.
Heck, go ahead and take a second look at the first screenshot provided above.
Does Mike look angry to you?
No—he looks forlorn.
Let me break it down for you:
I'll start by saying when the party learned of MADMAX the screename, they were all equally interested in knowing who it was.
Tumblr media
But when Max is introduced to us as a character (and revealed to be a girl), we get markedly different reactions between the boys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the first frame, they have no idea who she is or what her name is. All they see is a new girl. (Played by Sadie Sink mind you, who is very pretty).
Look at Mike's face: he already looks sulky.
The second frame is after they learn her name is Max. Once again, all four boys show some level of interest, but Mike remains sulky.
Then we have the recess scene in which the boys are watching Max, which is very interesting.
Consider the blocking and body language in this frame:
Tumblr media
Look at Will here: he's just as interested in Max as Lucas and Dustin are (even if his interest is not based on attraction). In fact, he's the main focus of this frame for some reason.
Mike is the only one who hangs back, and his body language is completely different from the other three (hands in pockets, meaning he is distanced). He has no interest whatsoever and his facial expression appears agitated.
Mike feels like the odd one out here.
Will fits in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When they "lose the target" Will is the one who spots her and reinitiates the "watching." Once again, Will is the main focus of this shot and even seems to be showing the most interest; his expression is bright and engaged.
He runs with Lucas and Dustin to the wastebin while Mike trails behind begrudgingly, not wanting to be left behind.
Tumblr media
It begs the question: why is Will the focal point among the four boys in a scene about looking at a girl, if he was never intended to be a love interest?
I argue it's because we're seeing this interaction from a very specific perspective—the perspective of Mike Wheeler, who is standing back and observing.
It's also worth noting that Will's change in demeanor and energy here is extremely apparent.
He is noticeably withdrawn and low in spirits this season due to his PTSD (both literal and metaphorical if you count the MF as a metaphor for trauma).
And Mike notices. He’s the one who points out that Will had been "quiet today"—a detail the others miss because they don’t watch Will the way he does.
Notice that Will is disengaged during the science lesson (before Max arrives), while the other three are nerding out. Will previously participated in the science fair—it typically interests him—but his mood is very low.
Tumblr media
Then compare that with his immediate engagement when Max walks into the classroom, and the level of interest he showed during recess. Mike would certainly observe this shift, paying as much attention to Will as he does.
In fact, once the distraction of Max has passed and the principal comes to collect him, Will's body language retreats again; shoulders hunched, eyes downcast.
What conclusion do you think Mike would come to based off these few short interactions?
(And these are the only interactions Mike sees between Will and Max before trick-or-treating together the next day. Mike hasn't even spoken to her yet).
From Will's perspective, this girl is just a novelty: a light-hearted distraction from everything else going on, offering a spot of normalcy.
But from Mike's perspective, this is a pretty new girl showing up out of nowhere and immediately raising Will's spirits: something he felt like he failed to do.
Tumblr media
And so it brings us to the trick-or-treating scene, in which Will (apparently) joins Dustin and Lucas in their enthusiasm for Max joining the party, while Mike hangs back and then begrudgingly follows, not wanting to be left behind.
Are we noticing the pattern?
Then we have Mike's confrontation with Will (this happens after Will is seen filming Max, btw). He tells Will he should have checked with him about Max joining them and that Max is, "ruining the best night of the year."
Uh... what? What did she do?
He then storms off: inentionally leaving Will behind this time.
(He wants him to know how that feels).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Following this interaction, Will has a big scare with the MF—and of course, it’s Mike who finds him first. Despite his mood, Mike is still attentive and protective.
Mike behaves possessively when he finds Will, not wanting the others to get involved. He takes Will “home” (his home) so they can be alone.
What follows is a scene that, put simply, is about reciprocation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Interestingly, Mike’s attitude toward Max shifts after this scene with Will—he doesn’t have anything to say about Max joining the party in the AV room to look at Dustin’s pollywog.
This is the girl who apparently ruined Halloween.
You’d think he’d still be unhappy to see her.
But after that conversation with Will in his basement, Mike feels more secure and reassured about the state of their relationship.
He's no longer jealous.
So now, it's apparently fine for Max to be in the party.
Well, that changes again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next notable interaction is after Mike realises the pollywog is from the UD. Mike immediately goes into protective mode. It’s not Will who storms into the classroom to grab the trap—it’s Mike.
It’s also (presumably) Mike who locks Max outside of the AV room when they discuss this, yelling at her that she can’t come inside.
When she opens the door anyway, the pollywog escapes—and (of course) Mike blames her. No one else points fingers.
Now, the boys were hesitant to reveal any information about the UD for obvious reasons, but here we see the recurring theme in the Mike/Will/Max triangle: Mike’s protectiveness (and slight possessiveness) of Will.
So, a recap of Mike’s perspective so far:
First gripe: You’re hogging Will’s attention (possessive) Second gripe: You’ve compromised Will’s safety (protective)
Then we finally have the confrontation between Mike and Max:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It literally starts with Mike telling Max to leave because she's in the boys' room. (Similar to his "boys only" comment in season 3).
Let's not get it twisted: When Max finally asks Mike why he's been treating her the way he has been, he deflects.
Mike, who always has a ready opinion and is not afraid of confrontation, is not comfortable sharing the real reason why.
It’s commonly believed that Mike simply didn’t like Max because her presence reminded him of El’s absence—and I see it—but after a closer look, I no longer agree.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Firstly, I don’t think it’s fair to assume that Max would remind Mike of El (or rub salt in the wound of her absence) just because they’re both girls. Max and El couldn’t be more different—physically or otherwise—and that distinction feels intentional.
Mike would never compare Max to El, because to him, El is incomparable—a superhero who saved his (and Will’s) life.
Also, in Mike’s mind, El is still in the party—he lists her name off with the other members.
Max wouldn’t be a replacement.
He literally just stated that she would be an addition.
Secondly, Mike never actually makes this connection himself. He simply offhandedly mentions El when he’s trying to convince Max she’s not needed.
So why does he want her to stay away?
And when El is finally introduced (both through conversation and literally) to this dynamic, what happens?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mike and Max begin to get along.
They share a smile.
If Mike’s issue with Max had anything to do with El, the scene wouldn’t have played out this way.
It’s classic misdirection.
The misdirection is so obvious they lean into it—even having El herself misinterpret Mike and Max’s relationship, becoming jealous.
She mistakenly assumes Mike is interested in Max, just like Mike mistakenly assumed Will was interested in her, too.
They’re giving the audience a warped perspective, urging us to look behind the curtain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mike’s behaviour towards Max fits perfectly into Byler’s shared arc in Season 2: Mike is attentive, protective, and possessive over Will, while Will—consumed by the MF—can’t fully reciprocate that attention.
The “crazy together” scene is the only time Mike receives the same energy back from Will the entire season.
I feel like people forget that when they talk about how cute Season 2 was for Byler. Cute from Will’s perspective, maybe (supernatural plot aside)—but for Mike?
We get multiple shots of Mike staring at Will or noticing his absence (Mike staring at Will’s empty desk being the most obvious example).
That’s called pining.
Will does not invite Mike to his house or show up uninvited—Mike does that. Will does not hold Mike’s hand—Mike does that. Will does not watch Mike closely or check in on him constantly—Mike does that. Will does not become possessive of Mike’s attention—Mike does that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In fact, they play into this unreciprocated affection trope pretty blatantly—when Mike bares his heart to Will, tearfully recounting their first meeting, Will quite literally cannot respond because he’s possessed—even if he wants to.
Not to mention—Mike’s recount of their first meeting is also (thematically) about reciprocation:
“I asked if you wanted to be my friend. And you said yes. You said yes.”
Mike puts emphasis on the fact that Will said yes: the fact that Will reciprocated his feelings.
That is what he wants.
He wants validation that Will feels the same.
That Will won't leave him behind.
And what happens at the end of Season 2?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From a Byler perspective, this season is about Mike’s (seemingly) unrequited love for Will—and it directly influences Mike’s (very different) behaviour in Season 3.
So yeah.
Mike didn’t like Max because he was jealous, and coping with feelings for Will he feared were one-sided—and in his mind that was confirmed as true.
Why wouldn’t he be relieved to see El at the snowball dance?
Why wouldn’t he kiss her?
Why wouldn’t he immediately start dating her and pushing Will away?

STRANGER THINGS 5 THEORY - Byler centred obs.
Okay. Hear me out.
They’re not gonna give us Byler obviously. Not yet. It’s gonna be subtle. Subtle in a way that the GA reads as “besties!” but the gays? We’ll see it. We’ll feel it. From the jump.
Long looks. Lingering smiles. ZERO concept of personal space. Always side by side until someone interrupts. Flirting so subtle it slips under the radar like the “cool” “cool” moment, but turn it up a notch.
The Party cracks jokes about them. Awkward silence. Will bites back with a little bit of sas, a dash embarrassed. Mike just… shuts down. Quiet. Red ears. Avoids eye contact. The others look between them. Suspicious.
Late night heart to hearts, accidental touches that jolt them both — one pulls away like they touched fire, and then, a beat later, the other chooses to touch again. Gentle. Intentional. You see the reaction: surprise, panic, hope.
Moments that almost go too far, but never quite. The audience starts whispering: wait… is this what I think it is?
Then BAM Mileven moment. Just as things are clicking for Byler, they throw that in. Confusion. Denial. Byler stans are SCREAMING. The GA fights back. The discourse gets louder.
And then.
The confession.
Undeniable. Clear. No ambiguity. A kiss. Raw. Earnest. Everything we’ve been waiting for. (Alexa play Heroes - Peter Gabriel version)
And just as it lands….interrupted. Chaos. Stakes. A fight. Separation.
And the rest of the season?
Them fighting their way back to each other. To end this. Together.
Boom! Fight me on this.
Just kidding this is only a theory I will happily take any other theories.

What if the “RUN!!!!” scene is Will screaming at Mike to escape from Vecna in his mind just like Max did in season 4??
Some people are saying he’s possessed which might be true, but to me, his scream sounds more like human desperation than possession.
When Will was possessed in s2, his scream was weird, disembodied, and demonic, but in this scene, the only voice i’m hearing is Will’s.
If you listen to the leaked audio of this scene, Will (presumably) says, “Mike! Please! Do you hear me?! You need to run! RUN!!!”
At this point, Mike may already be in a trance and floating in the air, hence why Will is looking up.
Tumblr media
Will also screams, “Do you hear me?!” which is what other characters, such as Eddie, said when they were trying to break someone else out of a Vecna trance.
I think that Will is screaming at Mike to outrun Vecna just like Max did in the Running up that Hill scene in s4.
Another thing i would like to point out is the way that Will’s expression turns into to sheer terror at the end of the clip. He’s truly HORRIFIED at whatever is happening in front of him.
Tumblr media
I also think that this scene will be SO much more terrifying if Will isn’t being possessed and his blood-curdling screaming is just because of his desperation and love for Mike, rather than anything supernatural
(Plus, if I’m right and Mike is being Vecna’d, we might finally get our Smalltown Boy scene!!!)

“its been a whole day stop talking about it” I DONT GIVE A GAF, MY MIKE WHEELER IS BACK!!
this is NOT the same Mike Wheeler as s4 Mike Wheeler. Mike who lied to El. Mike who pushed Will aside. Mike who was scared of both his friends and himself because of how far in he was to his internalized homophobia. Mike Wheeler who didn’t go to Lucas’s game. Mike Wheeler who to the GA became a dick out of nowhere??
No. this is MY Mike Wheeler.
THIS is Mike Wheeler who is honest with himself and his friends. Mike Wheeler who probably has already kissed Will. Mike Wheeler who prioritizes protecting people in danger, whether thats his friends or the new kids, he is brave again. Mike Wheeler is brave again!! I repeat THIS is my Mike Wheeler and I love him so much, he is so himself again.

Byler isn’t just the most respectful ending for Will. It’s also the most respectful ending for Mike. Mike’s main struggle throughout the series has been confronting what it means to be the “hero” who everybody needs, believing that he has to man up and be a conventionally masculine and “normal” guy to do so. And people really believe that the endgame for him is to… do exactly what everyone asks and expects of him at the expense of getting to be himself and prioritizing the things he truly wants out of life??? Lmao no.
His insecurities and the expectations others place on him have kept him from the one thing he truly prioritizes, which is Will at the end of the day. The proper ending for Mike is to finally be himself and finally do what he wants, which is loving Will and being Will’s man, provider, protector etc. etc. THAT is what he wants and by God he will get it IDGAF.

I JUST WANT TO ADD. if you ever feel delusional bc the GA doesn't see byler. I WAS A "GA" MEMBER. your basic mileven shipper. to me stranger things was more about monsters. so i never cared much for romance and just shipped whoever the duffers made the GA root for (yes i'm a blind sheep idc). i would have never shipped byler if the duffers didn't make us GA members root for them in season 4.
all of mileven moments were seen through will's lens. bylers were never delusional, we're meant to root for will. HE TOOK HALF THE SHOT IN THEIR LOVE CONFESSION LIKE HELLO. "no it was to show he loves mike" that plotline was already established?? we had the van scene?? jonathan accepting will's sexuality?? there was no reason for him to be in the shot, in the way of mil/ven's love. unless he literally is in the way, because mike can't love el the way he loves... a certain someone else.
