So I’ve been thinking about the way Joel and Grian cut their finale episodes and how different the energy is in each one. Grian said on the Imp and Skizz podcast this week that he really did want to win Wild Life but that Joel had already crowned himself the winner in his own mind and plowed through Grian like he wasn’t there. Looking at Joel’s episode, I believe that’s exactly what happened and that it’s also mostly Grian’s fault.

Grian was clearly on Joel’s side throughout the endgame, especially in Joel’s POV cut. He intervened to save Joel from danger, he promised Joel that he’d sacrifice his life for him. Heck, he came right out and told Joel that it was his turn to win. In Joel’s cut, the arrows Grian is shooting at the end do not seem threatening, any more that Pearl’s effort to take Scar out in Secret Life were more than halfhearted. Joel believes he is the winner because he thinks that Grian has chosen to help him win. With a more cerebral or theatrical player, this might have resulted in a dramatic standoff at the top of the tree where Grian revealed that it was now time for them to have a real fight to the death. But instead it was Joel, high on adrenaline and ready to win, and he clocked Grian right off the cliff before he could so much as begin a monologue.

So yeah, if we’re giving the guy a symbol, we could do a lot worse than “speeding car.”
