I feel like this drawing possessed me, sat me down and painted itself
The irony in that the primary idea was to focus on the arms and give stiles a tattoo but i couldn't get it to work with the limited colorpalette - altered closeup with the tattoo included under the cut! [find my stuff on Redbubble!]
Used mare.blk's tattoo style because if hand tattoos weren't a no-go in my chosen profession, I would get one by them done in a heartbeat. So stiles gets one instead lol Also used a 3D program to figure out the pose and angles - the canon height difference is there but bc derek's leaning it looks like stiles is taller which i'm not mad about I'll get around to drawing more derek initiating things soon, apparently i have a lot of stiles taking action to get out of my system ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

ONE:
The reality is that most people in fandom won't even notice. Or if they do, they won't care as long as you're writing something they enjoy reading.
I can't even express the amount of time I've spent researching and rewatching and checking dialogue and trying to get everything as canonical and in character as possible...and then when I was done and looked at other fics in the tags, some of the popular ones were like "I didn't know how to spell this character's name so I just made something up based on what I thought I heard."
The name they made up was...incorrect. Wildly so. And clearly it didn't matter at all to all the people reading and leaving kudos! I didn't leave a comment pointing it out, either, because it was clear they weren't interested in being told if it was wrong, and therefore it was not my business.
Which is to say, if you're afraid to write or post something because of rocks...there really aren't that many of them flying around. I promise. Write whatever you want as long as it's bringing you joy. Someone else out there is gonna like it, too.
TWO:
It is true, though, that the more you write the less you care, partly just because you're churning away into so many AU ideas at that point it'd be a little boring to write the same thing over and over and over?
With Sterek, I obviously had certain things that were important to me to keep as accurate to the characters as possible, but there was also an element of like...look, if Derek Hale didn't lose his entire family in a fire when he was young, due to events he considered his own fault...then he is going to act a bit differently from how he did in the show. Or if it's a human AU, he's not going to stalk around sniffing things and acting like a werewolf.
Also the show was stupid, after the first 3 seasons, so it genuinely hardly matters.
Writers can do whatever they want, it's fiction and there are a million fics that shouldn't all sound alike anyway. That's what made that fandom so good and so popular and so long-lasting.
first time writing fanfiction of a character : uughh i hope this is all canon accurate... it cant be canon innacurate at all or the enitire fandom will throw rocks at me...
10057th time writing the character: heres them working at a mcdonalds

If it's something I disagree with in a way that is deeply insulting to the OP - like I think what they said is extremely stupid or 100% wrong and a complete misunderstanding of the fandom/character/etc - I'll vent about it in private with friends. Or just block and ignore the account.
If the OP has a take that differs from mine but I see the validity of their stance and think there's some additional nuance/context to add, I might reblog with comments or tags, depending on how much energy I have and how much attachment I have to that part of the fandom.
i actually need to know people's thoughts on this because at least in my experience the answer to this has drastically changed since i was on tumblr in the 2010s and its driving me fucking insane
*im talking about fandom takes specifically. not someone being horribly evil about a real-life issue or or blatantly factually incorrect. literally just harmless fandom disagreements or differing interpretations of a text/character/etc.

Title: To the Sea Author: paintedrecs Word Count: 172,000 (complete) Rating: Explicit Fandom: Great Pretender Relationship: Edamura Makoto/Laurent Thierry Published: 2024-11-27 Tags: slow burn, pining, post-case 4 canon compliant, healing from trauma, emotional hurt/comfort, epistolary, sloooow build, found family, friends to lovers
READ ON AO3
Summary:
“No,” Edamura said, when he saw Laurent leaning against an ornate pillar in the lobby of his hotel.
Laurent simply grinned and waited for Edamura to stalk past the elevator bank and reception desk to join him.
Technically, he merely strode by Laurent, refusing to look him in the eyes, but he slowed his irritation-charged pace and glanced back, just the slightest bit, when Laurent didn’t immediately fall into step beside him.
He looked good, Laurent thought.
---
Laurent had developed many skills over the years. With languages, in the bedroom, or even something as simple as convincing other people that his decisions were ones they'd made on their own. He had a good life. A full one, with everything a man could need. A wallet bulging with his marks' money, more stamps in his passport than he'd ever thought possible, and a string of potential lovers he could pick through at will, if he wanted.
That, you see, was the flaw in all of his perfect plans. There was only one thing that Laurent truly wanted. One person, who hated his guts.
The other problem was even more difficult to unravel. Laurent was exceptional at everything, except this: telling anyone, especially himself, the truth.
#great pretender#edaurent#frenchbean#time for another reblog#pretty sure this is my favorite thing i've ever written

When I tag my fics as "Communication Is Important" it's because it is…but people also very often get it wrong, and it can take a long time to get there.
Even if you talk to each other, and communicate well, you're still not necessarily going to be saying exactly what the other person wants or needs to hear, and it can take a lot of trial and error to eventually wind up there. In the meantime, it's so easy to have those intense conversations and come out of them still hearing something that reflects your own thoughts/assumptions, and not those of the speaker, who's struggling to say what they're actually feeling.
So yeah, communication is important, but it is also DIFFICULT. People who talk perfectly and clearly all the time would make a pretty boring fic that would probably be like 500 words long. I like a mix, where the miscommunication isn't just people being wildly stupid, but being absolutely human - and flawed as a result.
I have never been on the same page as fandom’s clear communication fetishists and I never will be. I love miscommunication, concealment, pigheadedness, and lies. I think characters should talk around what they have to say and ignore each other and impute needs and beliefs onto others that have nothing to do with those other people and everything to do with maintenance of the ego. A little clear communication is fine but it should come at the end and be earned by repeated instances of snobbery, tomfoolery, self righteousness, or blockheadedness. If you decide you hate a character just because that character isn’t communicating in the way a therapist might coach them to, well consider that people don’t actually talk like that at all and that most of us get things wrong many times before we inch our way out of the labyrinthine darkness of our own heads.
