AIP Camping Fare :: A Simple Approach Here we have Breakfast. My favorite meal of the day, to eat and to cook. One cast iton pan sauted these mustard greens and fried up tostones. Plated those and kept them warm with a lid while I fried up these baby pasture chops. Minute and a half on each side, then continued with a hole vented lid and cooked 2 more minutes each side. Topped with my guacamole: avocado, ginger powder, salt and wild alliums. All in about 15 minutes and delicious to boot! What I take away from this simple approach aside from a content stomach, is how much a no-fuss approach to eating and living AIP is a practice in and of itself that heals the gut and the spirit.

Going Deep :: Auto-Immune Paleo, Ayurveda Style
Hello,
If you've been following, or even checked out this blog, Thank You! It means you are interested. Not too much shows up when you Google Paleoveda. I started this Blog because I knew it would be a journey. What is It? The search for a balanced, Sattvik, gut-healing, skin-clearing diet.
In posts-past, you can see that I've cut out gluten, grains, nuts, etc. Really, my diet was CLEAN! Only Whole, Organic foods & occasional grass-fed meats.
I'm a performer, and looking my best has been a struggle for sometime now. After returning from this recent tour, I came home and did my usual Kitchari cleanse. But this time I felt terrible and my inflammation was tenfold. Desperate for constraint-based approach, I found the AIP and said, "I"m doing the Auto-Immune Paleo Elimination Diet. That's it,"...
In addition to my already ridiculously strict diet;
I cut out all my favorite Indian seed spices.
No Chia, no seeds!
No Organic, cage-free eggs!
I cut out grass-fed butter, too!
No nightshades.
!!!
My only cheats, or compromises, is I'm still having 2 cups of organic, shade-grown dark coffee in the morning, and I will occasionally nibble a piece of soy-free, raw dark chocolate.
And GHEE! Gotta have the Ghee! But that's it...
But, there has to be a But, right?
Otherwise, why is This Different than just following AIP?
It's different for me because I know I can't have too much meat, red meat, especially. Don't get me wrong, I love grass-fed steak and burgers. But I've tried the Paleo protocol before and felt full and puffy and my Ovarian cysts acted up. I even gained weight. My eyes looked yellow and I felt my Pineal Glad calcify. Not fun.
I like the AIP approach because it's easy to avoid food triggers. I just don't eat them, they're not allowed. It's taken a lot of the guesswork out of which foods make me flare up. I also like how folks like Trescott & Kresser talk about lifestyle changes, too. Diet alone won't fix a leaky gut.
True for Ayurveda, too. A dosha-balancing diet is essential, but not the only element to healing and being sweet.
My approach is to balance the AIP to suit my belief that Ayurveda does know a little something about living healthy. I'm not eating meat at every meal, especially not at dinner. Dinner is a vegetarian (vegan without the ghee) affair, (unless it's a special occasion like a date.) One's Agni, or digestive fire, is not strong enough to digest heavy proteins in the evening.
I'm on Day 6 feel pretty good. I have a spiral pad I'm writing down everything I eat for each day. In the column opposite, I write how I feel. My energy is about the same as before. But, my skin has cleared up and tightened up. My eyes have a radiance to them. My Pineal feels fairly clear and my mood has been really good.
Also, I'm writing down some recipes I've been making up and can't wait to share, so more of that soon:
Breakfast curry,
Celeriac frittes,
Plantain gelato.
Xo,
Paleoveda

Morning Coffee (w/Ghee, of Course)
Hello,
I've been absent.
You know, life gets busy and we get stuck in the hustle-loop. These are the times when it is easier to be disembodied, rather than checking in and noticing how all the stress 'feels' in our bodies.
Well, I've been checking in a lot lately. Lately, my diet has consisted of mostly kitchari with vegetables for morning and noon meals and vegetables for dinner. Apple for snack. Plus, loads of good fats like chia, coconut and the occasional avocado.
I did this for ten days. I was not hungry. I had all the energy I needed to continue working and creating. And, my Pineal opened up so light and so brightly. I have never felt this Clear & Grounded at the same time.
It was Amazing.
Then, I decided to have a small grass-fed burger, no bun, and one glass of organic red wine.
Yes, I broke my food cleanse with a burger.
And it was Amazing.
My teachable moments are really about listening to my body. Checking in several times a day. They are not about extremism, or diet protocols that are mainstream.
I am not mainstream.
As I've continued checking in since my tour, I have discovered a few more food allergies : Nightshades (break me out), Dairy (can't do the 8oz latte everday).
(All this in addition to the previously mentioned Gluten, Wheat, Corn, Soy, Nuts, Fish & Sea Vegetables, Sugar ...)
I can tolerate small amounts of Quinoa. I will take white basmati with my kitchari. Other than that, I am grain free.
I will have an 8oz latte every now and again. But again, if it doesn't make me feel good after, I won't. This is my new experiment.
I like things about Paleo, I like things about Ayurveda.
If this journey interests you, please follow.
Best,
Paleoveda
Ps. Supplements & Herbs & Ayurvedic Facial Regimens that have made me glow.

Confessions
It's time to confess my rule breaking :: Making Contradiction Work
Why do I try and make two fairly opposing food philosophies and lifestyles work?
Because I'm educated and a food activist. Hear me out ::
First, what I don't do that's a main principle of Ayurveda is I don't follow vegetarianism.
I was a vegetarian for almost 15 years, and didn't do it properly for whatever reasons,
and ended up to be really sick.
Also, I am 99% grain-free. No rice, quinoa, millet, nothing.
My ancestors are Choctaw. My father raises grass-fed beef.
The only meat I eat is certified grass-fed, sustainable/organic beef, pork or turkey.
To balance out my meat eating ::
I don't eat meat at every meal, like many Paleos.
I do have Vegetarian days each week to give my body a break.
(October is Vegetarian Month, yikes!)
I always cook each meal with Dosha-balancing in mind.
Second, what I don't do that's a principle of the Paleo philosophy is I don't eat nuts!!!
In eliminating them from my diet, my skin has cleared up dramatically.
Last week I visited Picnik food trailer in South Austin and had their
Almond crusted Quiche.
The next day I had a breakout.
If you have High Pitta and or a tendency to breakout with pimples or cystic acne,
Eliminate All Nuts from your diet for at least a month and I think you will see a
big change in your skin.
Also, I don't overeat.
Many folks new to or naive about the Paleo (or any diet philosophy)
will eat more of the 'allowed' foods.
This is an old pattern.
Any time you overeat any foods you will not lose weight or balance your system!
I don't have two eggs and three pieces of bacon for breakfast.
I will split an entree with my sweetie, or,
I eat one small plate and try to eat slowly.
So, I break rules from both philosphies, knowingly.
I feel so much better and my skin has improved.
Sincerely,
Paleoveda
