Got fed up with constantly changing the way I draw them so I made myself a ref sheet for how I envisioned Jon and Martin. Will probably do other characters at some point. Also have a bunch of my HCs written but in case my writing is illegible I’ll write them out under the cut. Might even add some extra lol

Jon

S1

- Bitchy (we all already know this)

- Looked up “professional mens hair” and showed the first result to the stylist. Then watched youtube tutorials for hours to learn how to style it

- Fussy about appearance. Actually has a skincare routine and a ton of hair products. Would never admit this.

- Carries a lint roller and hand sanitizer in bag 24/7

S2

- Pookie in his stalker phase ♡

- Stops taking care of himself. Stops straightening his hair and any sort of skincare (much to Nikola’s later disapproval)

- Sweats a lot

- Stops shaving but also can’t grow a full beard so it’s just kinda patchy

- Has a bit of a crazed look in his eyes even when relaxed (he does not relax)

S3

- Noticeably thinner

- Gray streaks in hair start to come in

- I don’t think this man wore a single article of his own clothing this whole season

- Glasses broke in the escape from Not Sasha, so he gets new ones

- New neck scar, courtesy of Daisy. Also his hand is fucked now.

S4

- Oh boy

- He’s my type I fear

- No longer needs glasses

- Eyes turn bright green and they reflect like a cat’s in the dark

- Doesn’t actually like the long hair, but keeps it in a poor attempt to hide his extra eyes. They kinda come and go, he always has three eyes at the minimum, but when using his powers more open.

- New scars from shrapnel in the Unknowing explosion

S5

- Kinda a bastard

- Martin cried while he shaved his head (“It’s so beautiful you just have to take care of it properly!!!”), but he got over it when Jon was still hot with the buzzcut

- Many eyes always, and now a bit of a dark aura always lingering around his two original eyes. Pupils glow bright green

Martin

- How have I not seen more people draw him with a bowtie????

- Likes pastels but sticks to neutrals for the office to look more professional. Sometimes spices it up with a fun color or patterned bowtie, maybe even suspenders if he’s feeling really wild.

- He got his ears pierced at 18. It was one of his first true acts of rebellion against his mother. Loves wearing small but cute earrings as they’re a reminder that he has the ability to stand up for himself.

S2

- Gains weight from stress

- Is doing the whole “everything’s gonna be okay” act so he tries to keep up appearances.

- As he starts taking care of his mother more, his self expression disappears under her critical watch. Those earrings are the first to go.

S3

- Okay now its stubble/scruff time

- hides behind grown out bangs

- wears mostly oversized gray sweaters/sweatshirts

- slouches a lot, constantly trying to look smaller

S4

- Babygirl can grow a beard

- You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful by One Direction starts playing

- White streaks in hair grow in

- The lonely causes a sort of ethereal stream of tears to continually pour out of his eyes from under his fogged glasses. They get kinda floaty when he uses his powers.

- The fog, naturally.

- Pupils disappear, iris turns very light blue (they were hazel before)

S5

- He’s so sassy and jealous and petty I love him

- Keeps the white hair streaks and light eyes, and his eyesight has worsened from his time in the lonely.

- Jon cuts his bangs… badly. But hey at least they’re out of his eyes. Gets encouraged by Jon to do all the things he wants to do with his appearance, so he continues to grow out his hair and starts stretching his ears. Doesn’t really focus on that once they leave the safe house of course.

So, I rushed through The Magnus Archives in 2 weeks a month ago and now I made an animatic of the funny scene in MAG#181! There wasn´t one for it online and that made me so sad I went ahead and tried out a whole new form of art what-

Squeaky glass. Glass fresh outta the dishwasher so its still got that soap residue that makes it sticky and squeaky and dry and awful. Genuinely can’t handle putting glasswear away out of the dishwasher unless I use gloves or a cloth. Most annoying part is you run it under some water and bam its back to normal glass. So why can’t the machine just rinse it properly man it makes me feel sick.

I wanted to add the main time I really get annoyed with this is specifically when someone is asking about starting and has an interest in it and I watch them lose interest because everyone around them is telling them how hard it is to follow. It makes me so fuckin sad man.

Idk if this is a Magnus Archives hot take but I’ve always been peeved by people complaining about the series being confusing/hard to follow. Don’t get me wrong the name jokes will always be funny esp because Mr Sims calls all his less important characters outside of TMA fuckin’ Jerry Ballsack or something since he hates naming characters so damn much. And the Michaels of course.

But what I mean is people calling the complexity of the world and how the audience is kept in the dark about most of it an actual detractor. I’ve heard people say they couldn’t finish the series because they were too confused. Dude??? Its cosmic/eldritch horror??? Its supposed to be confusing and overwhelming and something you cannot fully comprehend. When a story is basically a mystery story where you’re discovering the world alongside your main character you’re meant to be lost!! Jon literally says “I don’t understand” in like every episode leading up to the szn 4 finale.

And ngl? The amount of connections and callbacks in the series are many and very well thought out which gives the series great re-listen potential, but not necessary to catch to understand the forward motion of the plot most of the time. You don’t need to remember what Jude Perry did to that one guy or even her name to understand “ah this is fire related shit. I know what they generally do” and move forward. Most of the time when Jon brings up one of an avatar’s victims to them its just a general desperate attempt to see if theres any humanity left in them, not because that person is actually important to the story. Which is what’s meant to be scary!! Innocent people are hurt and destroyed and their suffering is tiny and meaningless to the cruel gods that rule their world. And its what makes Jon’s transformation so much more apparent and chilling where people can become nothing but sustenance to him.

So when someone is asking about getting into TMA and everyone starts telling them “lol make sure to take notes” I’m kinda like sure do that if you want, but also if your confusion will hinder your listening experience I just don’t really think cosmic horror is for you? And thats ok.

Honestly the hardest part about listening to TMA for me was remembering what people look like because it's usually 1 throwaway line that's easy to miss and easier to forget. But that's just the format. I didn't realize Carlos from WTNV was Latino until someone pointed it out.

One of the most beautiful parts of TMA to me is that the way people look isn’t really that important to the plot and therefore the fandom gets to go crazy stupid wild making art of how they imagine the characters. Also any time I’m drawing a character and I’m like wait what do they look like I just look on the wiki to see if theres even any description for them at all.

I am, in fact, very normal about this podcast (:

TMA is something I’ve never seen coming. The rapid 180 degree changes, the whiplash from which hits you hard, makes you fall out of your seat and stare in the middle of the wall, wondering “..what just happened..”

Never have I ever been so inspired, driven by something so invigorating, so potent in its way of conveying emotions.

So many days have been met with lost eyes, absolutely aghast at what I just listened to. So many nights and unwise decisions to listen to one more episode, just one, and then dozing off with the first glimpses of dawn

I regret nothing. Not the tears, not the pain, not the time. TMA, thank you for introducing me to the part of me I didn’t know I had.
