he went on two (2) rides. one was a fat dragon that spun and a cool horse on the carousel.

he had cool blackberry ice cream to keep from fainting (of which the holder almost did from the heat but they both survived and proceeded to go on the fat dragon ride anyway.)

i want to talk about newkirk’s nose bc i haven’t seen anyone else talk about this and i think that’s a shame. it’s crooked, it’s obviously been broken at least once, and that is very important. it’s a visual shorthand for violence and criminal behaviour, two things heavily associated with the working class. granted, posh people broke their noses too sometimes, but when that happened, they could afford to have it corrected through cosmetic surgery. therefore, having a nose that had obviously been broken was synonymous with working class criminals.

to give you a better idea of just how noteworthy his nose is (noseworthy? nvm): there was this really interesting thing that started in san quentin prison in the 1910s. a guy called dr. leo l. stanley started doing plastic surgery on the prisoners to fix their faces ("Considerable plastic surgery has been done, particularly that done for deformed noses,” - dr stanley in a report to the warden in 1918) and this practice spread over the course of the 20th century across the us, uk, canada and mexico, coming to an end in the 90s. the reason they did this was kinda fucked up and a little eugenics-y but also unfortunately somewhat justified; it was based off the idea that criminality could be seen in someone’s appearance, so if you fix someone’s face to look less criminal, it would be easier for them to reintegrate into society. it’s a lot easier to get an honest job when you don’t look like a criminal. and it actually worked, is the thing. prisoners who underwent plastic surgery were notably less likely to reoffend, with some cases decreasing recidivism by 40%. something as simple as getting your nose corrected could rehabilitate you into society.

the downside was that they were still prisoners, and as such weren’t afforded a lot of decency when it came to actually getting their noses fixed. the way dr stanley would fix a prisoners nose was by taking a 6 inch length of broomstick, placing it against the nose, and hitting it with a mallet. basically he broke it again, kinda like that thing where you hit an amnesiac on the head and they regain their memories, except actually effective. but yeah, not a fun procedure.

anyway, all this to say that it wasn’t just newkirk’s accent that marked him as lower class, it was also his nose.
