CIU Blog 10
This is the final blog post for this trimester. I’ll begin with what we achieved as a group. Together we all worked towards the completion of our intro sequence and it would have been completed if not for some lighting issues that rendered our footage near useless. This may have been due to either the lights we used or our positioning on set. We will take measures later on to debunk the reason why it occurred. This intro sequence was essentially a stretch goal as it has nothing to do with pre-production seeing as it is for the final product. However this doesn’t mean it’s any less useful in our research and tests. Scott was able to finally add sounds to this shot and Kiara could also do a proper animation to it.
Overall, we completed all we set out to complete for pre-pro, these include storyboards, test shots, sounds, animation tests and intro sequence. As a group we worked extremely well together and I personally feel everyone really pulled their weight and gave equal amounts of time to the project. I feel this will lead into a very productive trimester in which we will definitely be able to get a lot of our work done and hopefully to a high standard.
We came across plenty of challenges so far including rewriting our final scene to keep it G rated. We also had a lot of issues with filming itself due to lighting issues and also needing to buy a camera and the program. Moving forward we will need to overcome these issues and adjust everything accordingly which shouldn’t be too difficult now that we know what we are doing more thoroughly.
Now as for our presentation. It really could have gone better with a lot more pictures and less dialogue. We had a lot to show but we just didn’t show it in the end which really was a mistake. This is what we’ll be fixing for our next one.

ANM BLOG FINALE
I did it! I finished the last studio unit! Okay, this trimester was all over the place. We began in a large group with one project, ‘Choices’, and were all given specific things to do for this project. Eventually after planning it for 2 trimesters, we found out that we wouldn’t have a second tri to work on it which got everyone bummed out and all. This lead to me creating an incomplete model of a suited up man. So while doing that, I learned about this magical tick box, NURMS subdivision. IT’S AMAZING. It allows you to move verts around and smooths it but allows for a much cleaner interface and also gives you a nice low poly model underneath if you want to use it. This helped so much in smoothing a nice model and gave me a lot of control in the creation of the smoothed out model. After that Jon gave us all a talk for our KPIs and boy did that hit me. It all clicked to me and I started to take a more professional look on things.
This lead to me starting a character model for something else since our group project pooped itself. So anyways, this character was called Commander Zilyana. She is a character in Runescape (pls no judgerino). It went really well and only took like 3-4 weeks. I got really into it towards the end. Two main guides I used for it were http://cgi.tutsplus.com/articles/game-character-creation-series-kila-chapter-1-high-resolution-modeling--cg-24776 and http://www.cgarena.com/freestuff/tutorials/max/headmodeling/index4.html
Those two guides helped me essentially through it all and allowed me to create a relatively high poly model. I learned proper, proper anatomy like calves and knees ;). Honestly I will say I loved this trimester thanks to Jon’s kick up the ass because it really allowed me to ignite my modelling passion and really opened up what I could do. Modelling the face was at first a disaster because just looking at pictures that had no guides made it really hard to figure out what to do with the topology. However thanks to the aforementioned website, I was able to fix up the topology on it really well and hopefully I can texture it over this break!

How has an understanding of the genre shaped your project stylistically through its visual elements & sound design?
2D character is really stylized and cute. Children’s animations don’t tend to contain realistic looking characters seen in Japanese animation for example. The simple style is so it is able to be easily reproduced and so it can be made cheaper and faster but also appeal to a young audience. Oscar was designed to be representative of the mindsent of a playful child.
Our stop motion character was designed to be fluid and easy to recreate but also memorable. Its silhouette is easy to notice and his actions represent that of a grumpier child. This stands out to a variety of children and also parents which allows them to not only connect with the characters but also enjoy them as a whole.
As a two character show, we wanted the two to compliment each other and react in a way two young children would with their friends. The relationship between the two characters in shows or films of this type really brings out each character. We wanted them to be simplistic as not to create a complicated character that would not be easy to animate or look appealing to children.
For sound, we’re using instruments that are typically used for children’s shows so no electric guitar etc. We’re also going to be using exaggerated sound effects such as splats and booms and wha chas and hya hyas!.
What key symbolic metaphors could represent a present day zeitgeist?
Gangnam style is a good example of present day zeitgeist. It resonates to people all over the world even though it’s not in English and managed to reach over a billion views. So is Call of Duty, it created a huge market for generic fps games where people just want something that feels familiar to them. This creates a huge demand for these things and so more games are released like this and then they cause gaming companies to create more and more of these games to appeal to the masses. People still buy them and they’re regularly released. Internet as we are in the age of communication and information.
If your audience was to question the creative integrity of your project what are the elements which may be seen as a remix or unoriginal?
They may see similarities between our stop motion character and other stop motion characters as the colour and base design is rather similar to some degree. People may also feel this specific episode uses lots of generic and cliche pranks in it with a basic story of friendship. However there are no copyright issues with these currently.
Create a campaign which considers these challenges, to give your audience an authentic experience and to engage them with your project.
Schedule of each week’s activities and progress posted on Facebook.
Week 12 - Complete animation for intro sequence/ title scene. Week 13 - Presentation, gathering of information

CIU Blog 8
This week’s blog is designed to show the history of the genre and medium of our animation. This means we were to research into the 2D animation and stop motion aspects of animation’s history. Seeing as our animation is also directed towards children, this means we must go into the history of children’s educational animations too. However, these are basically every original animation too as they were aimed for children in the first place.
We’ll first begin with our 2D history. This began with the start of 2D animation which came from Fantasmagorie (Emile Cohl - Fantasmagorie 1908, 2006). This was a 2D animation drawn onto a chalk board and photos were taken of the chalk board. It was the first 2D animation and was created by Emile Cohl. This was a children’s animation and was contained comedic elements to it.
Following this came other animations but it all started from Fantasmagorie. One of these newer animations was Steamboat Willie by Walt Disney (Thewaltdisneycompany.com, 2015). This was the first Mickey Mouse cartoon which lead to the character’s worldwide fame. From then on, Walt Disney remained the largest player in the 2D animation world since.
Now onto stop motion. The very first appearance of stop motion animation was in the film The ‘Teddy’ Bears (The 'Teddy' Bears (1907) - Edwin S. Porter | Wallace McCutcheon | Thomas Edison, 2012). It was aimed for children and a family film which is exactly what our animation is aiming for. However, this film was not as widely known as later stop motion works.
Finally, when these works became zeitgeist. For 2D this came when the Flintstones (The Flintstones (1960) - Intro (Opening) - Version 2, 2011), was released on television. It was an educational children’s animation like ours and television series. As for stop motion, this came from Wallace & Gromit and the company Aardman (Aardman.com, 2015). They have created children’s stop motion television shows and films or the past years.

Here comes the part where we figure out how we reach our target audience. I wish it was as easy and pushing a button and having it readily available for everyone. But wait, it is! Firstly our animation is aimed primarily for children but also the parents of these children to purchase merchandise if it gets to that level or to share the content with others and their children. If it weren’t for the parents, it wouldn’t be possible to share our animation with children on a large scale.
Firstly, Nathan is currently doing research on a lot of mediums we can use to not only share our animation but also interact with our target audience. He managed to find quite a few very good things we can use. Facebook will be a primary resource for us as it not only allows us to share our content with the click of a button but allows us to update any fans or other people while also interacting with them on a more personal level provided by them using their Facebook account.
Nathan managed to also find a program that a few libraries run which is a dedicated time each week in which they share children’s content. If we are able to get into contact with some libraries around our areas, we could put on shows or presentations to not only advertise our animation but get the children engaged with it thus increasing their chances of liking or enjoying it. This would be done via workshops we can do to feature clay sessions or drawing sessions. It allows us to more directly interact with out audience and gives us more of a reputation for parents to see that our animation really is enjoyable for their children.
Our Facebook group has been made but will actually be updated and formalized later on in this trimester to make it appeal to our target audience.

This week’s blog will be on classifications and social/ethical implications. For starters, we do aim for our animation to be rated G for not only Australian audiences but also for a worldwide audience through YouTube and other media platforms. This means firstly for Australian broadcasting standards, our show would require it to be suitable for everyone and contain language and themes of only mild impact (Classification.gov.au, 2015). Now we also have to consider what our scenes consist of. Going through our current iteration of the script, the only issue we foresee comes from the scene in which the stop motion character burns down the house of the 2D character. If this scene is left in it may cause children to see this scene and see it as okay to burn things or other dangerous acts may occur.
As for how we aim to broaden our social consideration, we are going to have only gibberish or pseudo dialogue in our animation. This opens it up to any languages as there is no need to add subtitles or dub the show. This not only reduces costs overall but straight away allows us to have it shown to a wide audience without language being an issue.
Now as for offensive content, I personally don’t feel any scenes in our animation will be deemed offensive. Once finalized, all our scenes will fit a G rating and will not contain anything offending any cultures, races or beliefs. As for negative backlash, scenes can still be changed for now and we can also cut out scenes easily when necessary. Essentially our project is close to what we feel will be a great fitting G rated show for a wide audience of primarily children.

CIU Blog 5
Last week, week 6, we did our presentations to not only the class and lecturers, but for a video to show the eastern states. It went really well and everyone seemed impressed and feel it is god enough for the unit. Callum told us it went well so that also meant a lot to us as he would know best for this project. I personally feel our presentation did go well, we got the response we wanted and everyone felt it was achievable.
Now onto part 2, the research. I was tasked to research into stop motion animation further and came up with a lot of things. Firstly, Mamshmam, also known as Callum. His YouTube videos are a great resource for us along with himself. His Slow Mo Reference video (Slow Mo References, 2009) is great for us as we can see the timing he uses to base and also his Mamshmam creation tutorial (How To Make Mamshmam's Claymen, 2007), which is what we loosely based our almost final design of the clay character on, will help us immensely.
Brett also gave us a really good YouTube series for reference which was Ghost Burger (GHOST BURGER chapter 1 - Meet, 2014), it features really interesting camera shots and really nice visuals we could do using clay. The timing of it all is also extremely smooth. So smooth that you really can’t notice it really is stop motion, which is something we’d like to achieve but it will be an incredibly difficult task.
Finally we have Plonsters. Although not as clean and professional looking as Ghost Burger, it still largely will influence us as our character will be fluid and morphing much like the characters in Plonsters (Plonsters, n.d.). This reference will be especially useful as it was a show featured on ABC kids years ago and is now continued on YouTube featuring all their episodes released every now and then. Just by viewing Plonsters, we can study how certain things are done and why they are done.
Now, there are also a few obvious references such as Coraline (IMDb, 2009) and Wallace & Gromit (Wallaceandgromit.com, n.d.) however, these won’t help us as much as the previously mentioned ones as these are less towards what we are aiming for however, it isn’t going to hurt us by studying these too. We will need all the references and study we can get.

Week 6 Anm Blog
So, this week has been interesting to say the least. I’ll start off with my personal animation. I had completed most of the frames before lip syncing however, with feedback I went and change majority of it, which has actually turned out a million times better. By a million times better, I mean billion. It’s just much better than it was before. This was mostly due to me studying images and poses of a friend and using these to pose my character similarly and in a way that made sense, unlike my previous version in which she was applying lipstick while talking... ANYWAYS, I have since changed it and each pose is now much smoother, makes sense and really brings out the character in a much more feminine way. It really showed me how proper study of how people do things differently can really change the way something looks. Going from my acting to an actual female’s helped a lot and it makes sense and definitely shows.
Anyways onto our major project. We now need to completely rescope everything and change it all due to some major news. The group however has decided to continue on and see how much we can finish in the time we have left. I managed to finish off my model sheets for the fear demon and passed them over to Caine who has begun modelling. He also finished his character sheets and passed them over to me to begin modelling! Great teamwork by us. So I’ve currently begun but haven’t exactly done much because somuchwork. Anyways we’ve also finished the script and a lot of the storyboards which is great and it means we can begin the animatic and even some blocking for some shots. So yeah, things are going smoothly!

Our animation will be aimed for children and the parents of children. We will be catering it for children aged roughly 4-12, an age bracket where they’ll enjoy it even as they age, so they don’t outgrow it too fast. Something like Spongebob Squarepants. This also means we need to cater to their parents too, as they are the ones that allow them to view the program or obtain it in some way. By making it appeal to a wide variety of parents through the use of story telling, learning and aesthetic, we hope parents will pick it up and support us by say, purchasing the show if it gets to that stage. This will also allow us to create merchandise and such to promote the show further and allows people to support it further.
However, to first do this we need to market it in the first place. To begin, during our production process, we will be documenting the journey, having time lapse footage, sneak previews, character concepts and other documents to do with the production all available on our own website. This will allow us to keep people up to date and informed on our show. We will have this website linked to social media such as Facebook and twitter. It allows us to connect to people on a much more personal level. Having updates posted onto say, Facebook, will allow people to like and share which will in turn show up for their friends and spread to a wider audience.
As for our content, we hope firstly to enter it into some sort of film festival. This allows us to receive critical feedback on it, allowing us to know if it is actually worthy to be continued further. For example if we manage to place first, we know this will be successful in some way and can aim for something larger scale. This will mean finding a film festival suitable for our film, which would most likely be a student or children’s film festival, online or offline. If there is none suitable, we may even create our own film festival aimed specifically for films directed towards children and enter our own film into it. If even this is not achievable, release through video sharing websites such as YouTube and Vimeo will be our next options. Allowing us to directly link to our website and share it to a larger audience than a film festival would have.
Our audience will be our main focus as we don’t want something children won’t enjoy or something parents won’t find suitable for their children, thus we will adjust and market everything appropriately to these people.

Week 5 Ani
This week’s blog will just be me discussing what’s been going on with our group projects and my personal animation.
This week for our group project I have just been drawing up my ideas for the fear demon which I think is the final one now due to Kiara needing to do other concepts too. Anyways I made it a cloaked figure to allow it’s body to primarily be made of smoke and bone. This was to make it more closely related to death and death is scary and fear is scary so it makes sense. Along with that design, I was also working with smoke effects in primarily After Effects to show what they look like and how we can make it work for certain things. I managed to make a smoke trail go up and a small smoke cloud in the area. This was done using noise maps and adjusting the fine details of it and key framing certain frames to make it actually move. It’s good in After Effects because after we have done the smoke and blocked it out, we can still edit the effect whenever we want to actually make it different depending on time or shot. I feel this will be great for the smoke not directly coming from the demon’s body as we can play around with and change it after rendering to save time and adjust things if necessary.
Now for the Pflow smoke effects. Basically I was following a tutorial but I messed up and got annoyed and only cried like 3 times but knowing what the final product looks like, it’ll be easier to use this for the demon itself because it looks great and we can have it react to wind and all that jazz. Essentially it’s done the same way in looks using a noise effect then just messing around with it.
As for my personal project, I’ve made my character actually act way more feminine which took a while but I just thought of how a drunken female would act when doing certain things then did those actions in my poses to make it more interesting.

Week 3: Project Assets
This week’s blog will be on the project tasks we each have and how we go about planning and executing these. My role in this project is the stop motion lead, so my current task is to create a character that suits the story and is also practical to animate. This means we will not be having an overly complicated character, but more of a simple one in which we have a lot of flexibility with. I will have a character completed for week 6′s presentation. I will be purchasing clay and taking pictures to document my process in creating this character and have it shown for week 6.
As for actually doing this, I will need to research a lot into stop motion. That is why we are hoping to get Callum as our mentor to help us through the process as he knows what he’s doing and will guide us through well. His YouTube channel will also be a good source for us to study and we will also be taking advantage of the tutorials over on DragonFrame’s website (Dragonframe.com, 2015). Along with this, I will be watching a lot of Plonsters as our animation will be heavily influenced by this show as it is a stop motion show that our clay character will work like (IMDb, n.d.). This means studying how the characters flow, interact and how certain actions are done.
I will need to work with Nathan heavily for camera angles and camera work as he will be directing every shot and so I will need to animate to the camera. Using Nathan’s knowledge we can animate the shots cleanly and make them look interesting. Other than that I’m not entirely sure what other resources I will need.
Now onto my strengths and weaknesses. My strengths would lie in my creativeness and willingness to experiments with different techniques and actions to enhance an animation. I also love to create great looking creatures and characters so doing this with clay will be a great experience and hopefully turn out well. However my weaknesses lie in the fact that I do tend to get distracted quite easily and go off track, however seeing as we’re going to be together as a group doing the work, it won’t be nearly as much of an issue.

Week 4 Blog
This week’s blog will analyse the film, ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’. It was iconic in its day and still is for how well the film worked. It combined live action with 2D animated to create a film that was extremely well received, scoring 7.7 on IMBD (IMDb, n.d.). This film came out in 1988, well before the first 3D feature film would be released. It was the most expensive film made in the 1980s and it was made with animation and live action (IMDb, n.d.).
This film not only made use of stunning acting but also stunning and well thought out animation such as having Roger Rabbit’s ears direct his own movement (The Making of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. 2013). Watching the film, you can see Roger Rabbit’s ears aren’t static and just flowing in the wind, but they move with him, they act like they’re an extra set of limbs that move based on his own actions. Studying this, it allows me to personally animate characters in a way as to have their entire body flow as one as to make that character actually feel alive with their entire body.
The film, being 2D and liveaction, really demonstrates how to tell a story, you don’t need everything the be in the same medium, but you need solid animation and acting. It works hand in hand and shows me that to make our animations actually convey our story well, they need to make the audience feel that these characters really are alive, they really do live in this world and that they feel real. ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ proves that a great story can be told with animation with this film.
In the YouTube video, The Making of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, it is explained how and why they made Roger Rabbit look the way he does. He was created using bits and pieces of beloved Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse inspired gloves. He was also coloured red, white and blue to represent the American flag. This was done to subliminally have the audience like him (The Making of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. 2013). Using this information, it helps us on deciding a colour scheme and style for our characters for this project and other future work. By combining characters and using familiar colours, we can create a character that appeals to a wider audience or a specific audience by researching our character thoroughly.
Essentially, this film, although being 2D and live action, can and will assist me in furthering my own 3D animation in ways I’d never thought it would be able to.

CIU212 Blog 2
This week’s blog post will be on our personal group. Our group consisting of Nathan, Scott, Kiara, Kaevis and myself, will be working on a short stop motion with a mixture of 2D animation short. We have had a meeting already during class/break to sort out the basics of what everyone was doing and what was going on. Since then we’ve been communicating via a Facebook messaging group and also through Google Drive by using certain folders with what we need including the presentation and a feedback folder.
All information and updates are posted in our facebook group chat along with the google drive folders so there’s multiple ways for people to stay updated. This along with face to face meetings means everyone is constantly kept up to date and organized. Also on our google drive, each person has their own colour to comment and give feedback on progress.
Each group member listens extremely well and knows what their job is and when to do it by and has so far done that perfectly. We have all been listening carefully to feedback and adjusted accordingly and everyone’s opinion is heard and thought upon. Everyone has a role to do and equal participation so far in the work we’ve done. Everyone has been responsible for getting things done and so far it has gone well, however the main work will be when we start filming/animating. So far it’s been smooth sailing with no difficulties coming up. Overall I feel our project will go very well as the goal seems achievable and with the people working on it, we should be able to achieve and great looking video that we can successfully submit to Tropfest 2015.

ANM230 Week 1-3
Okay, things start off with week 1 where we came to the conclusion that rather than smaller groups, we would work together as one large group and picked Gareth as our group leader, for obvious reasons. Gareth helped us hugely at the start by having us come up with ideas and brainstorm while giving us activities to do to come up with even more idea.
Eventually we came up with a basic idea about a boy and his dog in which they go on a journey which leads to the dog's death. We had a few versions of this basic story and left it there for fleshing out. This lead to Jacob and Mitch coming up with another idea use the same base but mixing it up by using our previous ideas of maybe having it set in hell and the dog idea. They combined the both and created a story basically with the boy in limbo being forced to conquer 3 demons with the help of his dog, assisting each other to overcome the difficulties. It was a good idea and was chosen to be fleshed out even further.
During this time in week 2 we also had tutorials for our classes because Jonathan ditched us </3. Our first tutorial was modelling and texturing but mostly modelling with Tim. Tim showed us some nice shortcuts and it makes me want to start modelling for our story very soon. After that we had a Lauren who helped us with pre-pro stuff like thumbnailing and concepting characters up. I used this to concept up the fear demon. I came up with a lot of nice silhouettes I liked but seeing as we're going with the first demon being smoke I'm not sure how useful it will be now however I'll still keep them up to be seen and discussed. I wasn't there Friday so I can't say how the 2D was but I'm sure it would've been some nice fun.
Anyways finally onto week 3, this week we focused mainly on getting the treatment finalized and ready to move on. Kiara, Mitch and Jacob worked on this specifically while the others worked on concepts and research. This lead to a somewhat final treatment where most things have been fleshed out and the idea is clear. After that we worked on the demons, deciding what they'd look like and basically everything about them. This gave us the ability to concept them up even nicer and gave us an even clearer vision. We also did some camera and facial animation tutorials with Jonathan which brought up a lot of good ideas and techniques that would improve my animation tenfold. Lucky for me I hadn't even started so I didn't need to completely scrap my work 8^). However that also put me quite behind so now I've actually started! Yay!

The Giants Storm Perth
On February the 13th, the giants came alive in the city of Perth, Western Australia. Magnificent story telling coupled with beautiful and intricate puppetry was displayed in celebration of the Perth International Arts Festival. Brought to us by the street theatre company, Royal de Luxe. They were founded in 1979 by Jean-Luc Courcoult. The company was based in Nantes, France. They have multiple shows including The Giants and the stories told by these shows follow on with other shows by them. They are known for their large scale street shows and especially known for the Giants (Perth Festival, 2015).
Royal de Luxe is known for changing their Giants story to incorporate the natives of the land depending on where it is being told. For Perth, this involved the Aborigine community (Perth Festival, 2015). This lead to a very well written story based around the Noongar people which represents them in a genuine way and shows their love for the land.
The story itself however wasn't completely known to everyone, yet it was still appealing (A. Croggon, 2015). Watching the giants was beautiful, the puppeteers all working together to move not only the puppets, but the audience with its pure elegence. Croggon explains "The two puppets, the Diver and the Little Girl, were hypnotically seductive. There’s a story that links the puppets’ journeys, but I was never quite able to put it together (the story on the Perth Festival website is charmingly nonsensical, in a very French way.) But somehow the narrative wasn’t the point."
The Giants show brought together thousands of people into Perth city over the weekend and showed that there was still an interest in big shows and street theatre even in today's day and age. Royal de Luxe was able to incorporate the cultural background of Perth into their story.

Final Post
This trimester has been huge and we've all learned a lot about every part of the animation process in one way or another. This tri opened me up to proper texturing and I feel like it's what I want to do in the future. We were able to animate 4 scenes including the ice and fire balls. We came across many problems and the major one during rendering was that we couldn't save it as a straight .mov, it needed to be saved as a .tga. Once this was done, it was ready. A link to the youtube video will be placed here soon.

Week 5
Didn't get much done other than my walk cycle due to the project being postponed for now. However this week I plan on texturing and skinning my model. Hopefully our whole group is able to show up and we can see where everyone is.
