19.03.2021 - CHOOSING A TOPIC
Today I chose the topic I will be conducting my PIP on: how feminism and people being more open about their sexuality drove cultural change in 1970s Australia. I decided to go with this topic due to my personal connection to it―my mother was born in 1973 and has first-hand experience with the results of the changes, as well as first-hand experience of where Australia’s modern culture has failed women and people of the LGBTQI+ community. I had previously decided on the topic of traditional herbalism, but then opted for a topic that wielded more research method options. This led to the idea of comparing different generation’s opinions on modern-day political issues such as sexism and racism. The idea to make it about both feminism and the progress of community acceptance of LGBTQI+ people came from the book Everyday Revolutions[1], which made me want to explore the environment that birthed both my mother and Australia’s first Mardi Gras.
