I am nowhere near ready to stop talking about "Comic Book Capers" animation. I want names, damnit! Who made the rat boy look so scrumptious? And IMAGINE QUACKERJACK WITH THE AUSSIE ANIMATION TREATMENT!!!
Tumblr media
They Called Me Mad! They Called Me Insane! They Were Right.
If you had somehow missed the first ABC episode AND the hour-long Sunday afternoon premiere of “Darkly Dawns the Duck”, your first exposure to Disney’s Australian studio would have been “Comic Book Capers”, which aired on the second Tuesday of the syndicated run. As far as WDA-Australia Darkwing episodes go, this one is middle-of-the-road from purely an animation standpoint (all their best shows went to ABC) but there’s enough great ideas and fun visual imagination to make this one a winner anyway. The story is something they could never have done on a Disney show until now, and no previous series was self aware enough to have pulled this off anyway. With the story flip-flopping from the comic book to “reality” this episode was the first to really show what this series was capable of, and laid the groundwork for fourth wall demolishing episodes such as “Inside Binky’s Brain” and “The Haunting of Mr. Bananabrain”.
The animation hovers at just around average throughout this episode, but there are still a few fun moments, mostly involving silly expressions on Darkwing/Drake…

This expression on Binky conveys so much with so little, as her face goes from happy to horrified as she reads the comic.

Here’s some really goofy, simplified, almost abstract drawings of Megavolt, the sort of thing you didn’t see in other episodes. And speaking of Megavolt…
Megavolt is the only one of the show’s supervillains to get the Australia treatment, and there are a couple of quick scenes where the studio’s best animators got to handle him, giving us a taste of what might have been if this series had come about even a year later…
The first scene has Darkwing and Launchpad ambushing Megavolt, who has taken control of the power company. The scene begins with the bad guy giving what amounts to an all-too-true self assessment…
Tumblr media
“They called me mad! They called me insane!”
Tumblr media
“They were right.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“But I’m running things now.”
The rest of the scene involves Megavolt using a remote control to attack Darkwing and Launchpad with a desk lamp and vacuum cleaner. All the action goes to the heroes, but Megalon gets the best animation, even though his dialogue pretty much just amounts to exposition.

The second drawing, with the hand angled towards the camera, was something the animator working on this scene did a lot. This is very confident, expressive stuff, and there’s a nice fluid, looseness to this artist’s work that would only get stronger once the crew moved over to Goof Troop.
Thankfully, this animator go to handle another scene with Megavolt a few minutes later, in what is easily my favorite bit of animation in the entire episode…

I’ve never had any problems with the way Sunwoo or WDA-Japan handled Megavolt but, damn, Australia really took this design and brought it to the next level, didn’t they? There’s so much to love in this scene: the fake out before it’s revealed he’s confessing his love to a light bulb, the flurry of hands that appear when the comic hits him the face, his helmet crackling with energy as he reads and the terrific body language as he kicks the pages around the room. I really wish we got more of this stuff. Could you imagine Quackerjack animated this way? This studio would go on to truly master outrageous, nutball characters like Bonkers and Fallapart Rabbit, not to mention Icarus in that one Hercules episode they did. Darkwing Duck, created a year later, with 20+ episodes animated in Australia? A phenomenal series would have been even more fantastic.

Never been prouder to be an aussie animation fan. The animation of Comic Book Capers is so *chef's kiss*
Is it me or comic capers is the one time that Megavolt DESTROYED the animation budget? His movements there were smooth af
Disney's Australian branch of the animation department delivered us the beautifully animated rat man

It's almost an absolute crime that we never did get a feature length Darkwing film, because Megavolt could have carried the entire movie for us just being himself. He would have been perfect for a mega length story with higher stakes and amusing plotline that could have performed moderately well in the box office. Team him up with his good old buddy QuackerJack, and we got gold just coming off the printer in droves.
Just imagine a Darkwing film with the same production quality as "A Goofy Movie". Imagine.
Tumblr media
Contextually speaking for its time, this was an earlier episode and Megavolt was more or less well marketed as probably being THE defacto adversary to Darkwing, so of course he was going to look great. :P
I had this episode on tape as a kid and played the everloving heck out of it. Probably a bit too much, since my mother's ex-boyfriend hated that. A lot. Like, a lot, a lot.
I never did find out what happened to that tape when I was moved elsewhere.
