Fieldwork #7
The first painting is titled “Flint” and this has to deal with minority groups. This deals with minority groups because as you can see on the painting is a black boy. In Flint many black and hispanic individuals are dealing with the issue if dirty water. Due to the dirty water you can see that this country is poor and due to them being poor you can easily see that it is a minority prone country. Nobody is reaching out to these people due to them being minorities. if these were white individuals the issue would’ve been solved. The second painting is titled “Dreamers Deferred” and it has to dead with the idea of minority groups and discrimination and racial injustice. The idea of the painting is to describe how minorities are not accepted in America. There’s the wall trump wants to build to keep hispanics out, there’s black people and many more. Hispanics and African Americans come to America for the “American Dream”, the idea of freedom, which is why it is titled Dreamers Deferred; they can no longer receive their dream. This is racial injustice and discrimination because these individuals are being counted out due to the color of their skin and that is not fair. The third painting “Injustice” and this painting has to deal with prejudice. In this painting there is a judge waiting to lock somebody up and there is also people behind a cell and judging of the color drawn of the people you can assume they are black. the last painting is titled “Shots Fired” and this painting is intergroup relationships and minorities. In this painting there are pictures of multiple BLACK individuals whom have been killed due to raical injustice. It has to deal with intergroup relationships because of the Black Lives Matter movement. This movement was created to bring awareness to the injustice of black people.

Field Assignment #6
Biography of a Hershey Chocolate Bar
The ingredients include: Milk chocolate (sugar, milk, chocolate, cocoa butter, lactose, milk fat, soy lecithin, PGPR, emulsifier, vanillin, and artificial flavor)
Working and living conditions of people who produce cocoa: Farmers who produce cocoa invest a lot of time and patience into their business. They earn very low incomes and have to put the money they receive into their land or their workers. They don’t earn enough to pay their workers so then end up cutting their salaries and also tend to use child labour. Some even end up treating their workers so bad. Some farmers tends to be below the poverty line meaning they only make about $1.25/day. Also farmers income is affected by the prices of the cocoa being sold; therefore, if nothing is being sold they cant receive any profit.
The way it is produced/child labour involved: It comes from cocoa bean which are on a cocoa fruit tree. The production of cocoa begins in the tropical regions where the hot and humid climate is well suited for growing cocoa trees. 70% of the world’s cocoa beans come from West African countries. 90% of cocoa is grown on small family farms; 5% comes from large plantations. Growing cocoa is hard manual work, as caring for and harvesting the beans requires close and continuous attention and also a lot of patience. The cocoa tree flowers and bears fruit throughout the entire year. It produces large cocoa pods, which need to be cut from the trees by machetes or sticks. Each cocoa pod contains around 20 to 30 seeds sitting in a sweet white pulp – these are the actual cocoa beans. It takes a whole year’s crop from one tree to make half a kilo of cocoa. Pods do not ripen at the same time, the trees need to be monitored continuously. Cocoa is a very delicate crop, easily affected by changes in weather and to diseases and pests. After the harvest, the ripe pods need to be cut open with machetes and the beans are taken out. The cocoa beans then need to be fermented, dried, cleaned and packed. When the beans are packed into cocoa sacks, the farmers are ready to sell. Because of all the hard work that is put through with this process, child labour does occur. Cocoa is then turned into many things such as butter, liquor, etc.
Cocoa being brought to the market: Intermediaries buy the sacks of unprocessed beans and sell them to exporters. When the beans reach the grinding companies in the global North, the cocoa still needs to be processed. The beans are crushed and the shells removed, roasted, and finally ground.
Prices set: They are mainly set by supply and demand levels; if the supply of cocoa is low then the price of the chocolate become higher. They also tend to create their prices way more then what they buy the cocoa more so they get the better end of the stick.
International company that dominates chocolate trade/ regulated by: Mars Wrigley Confectionery, division of Mars Inc (USA), Ferrero Group (Luxembourg / Italy), and Mondelēz International (USA) are three of the top companies that run chocolate. TransFair USA is a regulator for chocolate companies.
How chocolate is marketed: Each company has their targeted audience. Most companies use commercials to intrigue children into buying their product. They also use certain colors and shapes to target their audience.
Chocolate bought from: Most of these products are sold at markets or corner stores. Mine was bought from my local Rite Aid.
Profit made from store owners: Chocolate franchises make about 40-48%, chocolate enterprises make about 58-72%, and wholesalers/retailers make about 23-47%.
Hidden cost/health care cost: Taxes are a big hidden cost when buying these products. Eating too much chocolate can make you sick and you may end up in the doctors for it.

Field Assignment #5
I believe the Innocence Project has a very good way of bringing awareness to those wrongfully convicted of a crime. The case I read about was how Timothy Cole was convicted of a rape because he matched the ladies description. It was surprising because the real person who committed the crime was writing to him trying to tell him he did it but Timothy ended up dying in prison.
This statement means that the rule makers are who decide what happens in the situation so people tend to be heavy on them because they put innocent people away for no reason. This relates to the Innocence Project because the whole reason why they do what they do is because of the enforcers that wrongfully put put away.
A “labeling theorist” might be interested because society know these people as people who have committed a crime and in reality they haven’t; now they have to live with that title.

Fieldwork Assignment #3
1. Socialization is the act of adapting behavior to the norms of a culture or society. This article relates to socialization because it highlights how people raise their children. It also mentions social class; the difference between high class and middle class participating in the pageant. Another thing mentioned was the idea of race and I believe that plays a major part in socialization.
2. A show that describes lower and middle class is The Simpsons because they own a house, have a pretty average size family, a stay at home mom and the take trips but they also sometimes struggle. This family is definitely a representation of Concerted Cultivation because the children attend after school programs and their parents know about their talents.

What is Anomie...
A breakdown of moral standards and values as well as lack of purpose; could be applied to an individual or a group.
Examples:
The feeling of disconnectedness due to a lack of shared social values and norms that occurs within high-rise residencies. The dearth of communal social space that leads to social interactions with one’s neighbors reduces those connections and, hence, a sense of shared value and purpose.
Urban areas with high-crime and low employment rates can lead to anomie’s extremes. In this scenario, society’s expectations (e.g. achieving the ‘American Dream’) are generally unachievable for members of these neighborhoods; leading to the breakdown of an individual’s bonds with their community.
Less extreme but more insidious mediums of anomie would be reality TV and social media’s contribution to moral decay. Reality TV, which is more ‘dystopian TV’ than it is reality, promotes social interaction that is the antithesis of a civil society. Lord of the Flies was a great book, but who would want to live that way? While the anonymity and lack of consequences that the internet affords has led to the advent of internet trolls that thrive on breaking social norms.

Reality T.V is an example of because it tends to create a lot of chaos.

Fieldwork Assignment #1
Symbolic Interactionism in smart terms is the view of social behavior that emphasizes linguistic or gestural communication and it’s subjective understanding, especially the role of language in the formation of the child as a social being. In my words symbolic interactionism is a sociological term explaining the way we interact with each other, using symbols, to create a connection pr relationship. This theory comes from the 20th century; developed by Charles Horton Cooley and George Herbert Mead. According to Crossman “symbolic interactionism traces its origins to Max Weber's assertion that individuals act according to their interpretation of the meaning of their world”. George Herbert Mead was an American philosopher; born in Massachusetts. He believed that people have the ability to develop their image through interaction. Thus why he came up with “Symbolic Interactionism”. George Herbert Mead never published his thoughts on this theory but, his student Herbert Blumer took over the theory and made it come to life.
Symbolic Interactionism is used through symbols; therefore, people, places, or behaviors can be used to create a relationship with something. Herbert Blumer came up with 3 key principles; meaning, thought, and language. Meaning explains the way people interact with a symbol and gives it a specific significant. Thought explains one’s understanding of a symbol. Language explains the engagement of the symbol. This theory is very interesting to me because it explains how one can create a relationship with a symbol. I would’ve never thought of something as a “symbol”. It’s interesting how easy it is to create a relationship based off language, meaning, and thought.
Symbolic Interactionism is used daily for human interactions. People tend to use this theory when making friends. You have to interact with somebody to create a relationship with them. Thought is used when you are in the process of getting to know this person. Meaning is used because you have to decide if you want to have this relationship or not; put a meaning to it. Finally, language is used because you have to know what to say to the person. Also, this theory is used in race. Most people are racist as we all know and their interaction tends to be negative. Cops know that killing and harming black people is not the right thing to do but, they do it anyways because they think it’s the right thing to do. Their symbolic meaning leads them to hard our black men and woman.
