Growing up as child, I never had a vivid imagination of myself dreaming to be able to fly in the sky with my cape freely; to blast off fire or wield a hammer with the power of lightning and thunder; a genius that can create bizarre and insurmountable gadgets and armors; and be someone who can crawl in the wall of the towering building and just freely swing with web shooters in the city at night. Unlike the common kids, my life as kid was never touched by fictitious superhero characters.
Honestly, I did not consider watching or reading the famous movies and comics of the Marvel (Spider-Man, Iron Man, Capatain America etc.) and DC (Superman, Batman, Wonderwoman, etc.). I had this concept in mind that this kind of stuff are just somehow for kids and immature people. I was too complacent that I shouldn’t be bothered by these. At the first place, I stood into my belief that these superhero thingy is just a result of people’s bandwagon culture because it’s cool and it’s trendy. I didn’t want to be a dead fish, swayed by the flow of the river.
The people around me are talking about the Avengers: Infinity War last 2016.  I didn’t care. I was not interested at all. Given with the social construct that I am into, I wasn’t resistant to their discussions of the MARVEL 101 whenever we meet [on a daily basis]. It came to the point, maybe with heightened drive of my curiosity, I found out myself eavesdropping.
At that moment, I had a speck of interest to “Marvel” movies already. With my very nature as a curious person, I came to the point that I have to gratify my urge to see these things. I challenged myself to dump my preconceived judgments and just dive in the river of the Marvel Universe.
To make it short, I watched the Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and Spider-Man. I arrived into the realization that my judgement to people who indulge themselves with this stuff is pointing it to me after all. Yes, I drowned in this universe of fiction. Without my curiosity and the audacity to learn or love new things, I wouldn’t be able to somehow feel how a normal child, dreaming to be a super hero. Though it’s late, I was able to savor the taste of childhood that I never had.
Sometimes, we encapsulate ourselves to our own belief or perspective and causing us to debunk other’s idea. It’s good to stand on what we believe and what we known to be true, but we should not also reject the idea of learning and opening the door to new things. Your rejection to step into new thing might be a possibility that you are missing half of your life or even the whole of it. You never know, a step of learning can change your life forever.

Fieldwork Assignment #1
Symbolic Interactionism in smart terms is the view of social behavior that emphasizes linguistic or gestural communication and it’s subjective understanding, especially the role of language in the formation of the child as a social being. In my words symbolic interactionism is a sociological term explaining the way we interact with each other, using symbols, to create a connection pr relationship. This theory comes from the 20th century; developed by Charles Horton Cooley and George Herbert Mead. According to Crossman “symbolic interactionism traces its origins to Max Weber's assertion that individuals act according to their interpretation of the meaning of their world”. George Herbert Mead was an American philosopher; born in Massachusetts. He believed that people have the ability to develop their image through interaction. Thus why he came up with “Symbolic Interactionism”. George Herbert Mead never published his thoughts on this theory but, his student Herbert Blumer took over the theory and made it come to life.
Symbolic Interactionism is used through symbols; therefore, people, places, or behaviors can be used to create a relationship with something. Herbert Blumer came up with 3 key principles; meaning, thought, and language. Meaning explains the way people interact with a symbol and gives it a specific significant. Thought explains one’s understanding of a symbol. Language explains the engagement of the symbol. This theory is very interesting to me because it explains how one can create a relationship with a symbol. I would’ve never thought of something as a “symbol”. It’s interesting how easy it is to create a relationship based off language, meaning, and thought.
Symbolic Interactionism is used daily for human interactions. People tend to use this theory when making friends. You have to interact with somebody to create a relationship with them. Thought is used when you are in the process of getting to know this person. Meaning is used because you have to decide if you want to have this relationship or not; put a meaning to it. Finally, language is used because you have to know what to say to the person. Also, this theory is used in race. Most people are racist as we all know and their interaction tends to be negative. Cops know that killing and harming black people is not the right thing to do but, they do it anyways because they think it’s the right thing to do. Their symbolic meaning leads them to hard our black men and woman.

Hand Gestures through the World
Tumblr media
In America hand signals are big way of our culture. I along with many others have used them my whole time growing up. From whenever I was a baby and wanted something but didn’t know how to talk so I pointed at it with my finger to being in high school when I raise my hand to someone else it signals for a high five. These hand gestures are all apart of our country’s symbolic interactionism. This is basically a level or sociological theory when known phrases and actions are done because other people around you know what you want from that phrase or action. However, this only occurs whenever it is within the same culture. When going outside of the westernized culture, our hand gestures can take different meanings.
To begin with, one of the most common hand gestures in America is the thumbs up symbol. This symbol typically means good job or keep doing it that way, but only in a few countries. Although if you go to Greece or the Middle East, it pretty much means “up yours” (Cotton G, 2013). If you do a thumbs up for job well done, then you can get into some trouble and looked down upon. However, in even other countries the thumbs up is just a number symbol.
Another common hand symbol in America is the OK gesture. This is also known as okay and everything going well. In other countries it is not as bad symbol as the thumbs up. In Japan the OK gesture is used to signal for money. While in France, the OK gesture just means zero (Cotton G, 2013).
When used, hand gestures can be a both a good and bad thing. Sometimes, it just depends what gestures are used and in which country it is in. So, if travelling to a different country remember these rules and how are the symbols are used.

Blog Entry 8: Sociological Perspectives (Symbolic Interactionism, Looking Glass Self, and Dramaturgy)
The topic had gotten to me quite a bit, as I recognized a lot of things about myself while learning about these. I didn’t pay much attention to Symbolic Interactionism at first, since I simply associated it with things like emojis, hand gestures, and the like where interpretations are straightforward and too… general, to want to pay attention to. Then, I had realized it goes into more than just those. We assign meaning and interpretations to things such as facial expressions and body movements, and one fascinating thing is we can have our own interpretations of certain movements, but our interpretations can be wildly different from another’s due to how each of us developed our ways of thinking differently. I could associate a person not replying to me on Facebook as them not being interested in wanting to talk to me, since I am used to active online chatting and getting to know someone online. However, the other person may not be as bothered by it, because they just don’t prefer talking online and are more comfortable talking in person. The fact that we can put different meanings into the same event or reaction makes it difficult sometimes to read a situation, but it also forces you to become more open-minded and learn to not assume either the extreme positive or extreme negative realities of a situation.
The Looking Glass Self is nicely named, as it first immediately grabbed my attention as I am a big fan of Alice In Wonderland. Once we had gotten into it, I came to realize just how much I focus on this process of self-development, as a lot fo what I do, what I approve of myself or what I change about myself is due to how I want to be viewed by other people, even if I say I’m doing it for myself. I find a lot of pride in my ability to do things, such as being adequate at singing or painting, or doing well in school, because others praise me for it. It’s a little sad to admit, as I wish I could say I was proud of myself simply because I liked my own work, but honestly it’s not really the case. I am quick to find flaws in my works, but I am able to move past it and enjoy what I do because I know that even if I don’t like it, a lot of other people do. My love for anime and kpop and fangirling stems from me genuinely enjoying them, yes, but it is also fueled by me seeing how other people who do the same are seen as comfortable with who they are enough to express their love for something without being embarrassed, and I think, hey, I want to be just like that.
I get a little confused sometimes as to whether the looking glass self means that you judge yourself based on what you think other people think of you, or if you judge yourself based on how you see yourself in someone else, and how you change based on whether or not you like that, but I think the theory involves both. As it focuses on how you view yourself based on your “reflection” in other people.
Dramaturgy was a new term for me, but not a new concept. Acting differently based on who you’re talking to is something I’m very familiar with. As I was growing up, I had to be very careful with how I presented myself in front of my parents, in front of my friends, in front of everyone. I had to act a different way in front of all of them in order for them to consider me as “acting normally”. This way of living soon got to me, and when I’m by myself, in the backstage, I began to question what kind of person I actually was. Who was I? Which representation of myself was actually closest to being the most genuine?
I got tired after a while of having to keep up a front, especially different fronts when it came to the people closest to me. As I got older, and became more comfortable with sharing my thoughts to my parents and siblings without being afraid of them disapproving, I began to portray a similar image to them as I do with my friends. I became more vocal about my thoughts on things, my love for different bands and styles, I was open about how I reacted to things I disliked, and soon enough I began to see what kind of person I really am, because I had less fronts to keep up. The only fronts I keep up are with those I wasn’t close with, but with those I was, I’m very comfortable acting the same way. And I am rather proud of this, as I’d like to consider it as me knowing who I am.

Symbolic Interactionism
Is this something we would be able to see and understand as everyday individuals? One-to-one interactions and communications. This one is a little bit more confusing for me to understand. But I believe what it is, is understanding the way people communicate with one another. Their words are not the only way people communicate with one another. They can give signals off to show the way that they are feeling. But often time people's interactions with one another are just based off of the vibe that they get from one another. And the responses that they give one another allowing them to feed off one another, and allow them to interact. The interesting part to know would be what makes people's interactions natural, and what makes them awkward. It all depends on how people do in social circumstances, and how comfortable they are with the people around them.

SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES: SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONISM | LOOKING GLASS SELF | DRAMATURGY
“No man is an Island”, it is a quote to summarize the concepts of Psychosocial Development (Symbolic interactionism, Looking Glass Self, and Dramaturgy). The society and the people around us are the reason as to why we could differentiate ourselves from a certain crowd or even a certain person. Technically, everything in this world is a social construct or a creation based on the perception and standard of the masses. With that, even our own personalities and identities is said to be only identified based on the reflection of society to us.
To briefly explain, Symbolic Interactionism shows us how certain objects or events serve as symbols which help form the perception of humans towards interactions. Then, the Looking Glass Self is like looking into a mirror where you could see society on the other side; which means that the society and everything else in it is what influences you to be the way you are. The way you perceive how people judge your actions affects how you perceive yourself and present yourself to others. Lastly, Dramaturgy presents life as a stage where you and the people surrounding you are the actors and the different places you go to is your stage. You could manipulate the contents of that stage, or the props, and use it to your advantage.
No matter how hard one tries to disassociate one’s self towards his origins and wherever he is brought up, it is impossible because every single human, thing, or event that you had in your life affects you entirely; though some may be discreet, it could still show in more ways than one. The society where you live in, the people who you interact with, and the events which you participate in help define who you are and who you are not. It is both a helpful thing, yet also a struggle for a person. It is helpful because you could strengthen the way you show yourself and help others discern your traits with ease. Additionally, you could also explore the possibilities that are available in your surroundings. There are different symbols, crowds, and stages or sets that you may be able to show off and find your identity. However, there may be times when you feel indifferent towards the place, event or crowd where you are in and may further lead to desolation or feelings of abandonment and rebellion towards them if you are not that patient, persistent, and open-minded towards searching for your own identity.
Despite the insights of showing unity and connectedness within the community in terms of identity discernment, it goes to show, that a person is weak without others and one could not function well without other people. It is not right to be fully dependent on other people in order that one may function every single day, one also needs a time away from the regular routines that one does. Furthermore, one could not always have the time and the effort to put up a show every single day. There may be times when a certain perception towards a person would change or a certain act is dropped. No matter the reason, this perspective is just one of the many theories that we people could use in-order-to identify ourselves and give clarity towards the unknown parts of ourselves.
