It was always Peeta.
And it was never Gale. Partly because his relationship with Katniss started as transactional.
Katniss says herself it took years for them to become friends and not hagle over every single catch/ find.
Most of Katniss’s relationships are transactional. Her friendship Gale started off as trading hunting/ gathering tips and advice. Her relationships at the Hob and Town were based on trading. Katniss even acts as the “provider” for her family (whom she loves dearly but my girl was stressed about it).
During the games she formed a transactional relationship with sponsors, and post games she formed a transactional agreement with Snow. Even in 13 she only agreed to be the Mockingjay as long as her demands are met.
And in my opinion Gale feels entitled to a romantic relationship with Katniss because it’s another transaction.
Peeta is the only person who gives to Katniss with zero expectations of getting anything in return. Not her love. Not her friendship. Not even a thank you.

It’s all fun and games laughing about Haymitch over sharing and Katniss under sharing in comparison until you realize Haymitch is trying to remember all the fine details of everyone he will never see again and Katniss is trying to protect her remaining autonomy by keeping those details private
The difference in their trauma responses being shown from the very start of their narratives guts me

there is some kind of twisted irony in the knowledge that, in Karniss and Peeta’s first games, Katniss was analyzing and scrutinizing Peeta’s every move under the lense that he was nothing but an enemy- someone who’s job is to kill her. Even in moments where she cared for him, it was always combated with a firm “no, I can’t care for him. Only one comes out. His job will be to try and kill me, and mine will be to kill him.”
and Peeta never, not once, thought that about her. His goal was always to protect her.
but after the quarter quell, after everything for Katniss became protecting Peeta, it is now Peeta who analyzes Katniss’ every move under that lense of “it’s her or me. Her job is to kill me, so I have to kill her first”, even while having to fight with himself over moments where he cares for her- where she seems to care for him.

from katniss' perspective, the 75th hunger games & the 3rd quarter quell are all about her disobedience (and peeta's to some extent, but most of all that was her doing.) being that this was the only perspective we've had for years and years and years, that's the only assumption the rest of us could've made too. and sotr, against all odds, continues to ruthlessly add context to so many aspects of the series, whether we like it or not. the inclusion of so many known names and faces is something i've seen criticized and accused of being fanservice/nostalgia fuel, which... spectacularly misses the point.
beetee has, up until then, been a victor with known rebel tendencies. he's already being punished for that in sotr, let alone after. we don't know the details of mags' and wiress' involvement with the rebellion attempt in sotr, but we last see them tired, hurt, and visibly post-torture. johanna mason won her games by doing nothing offensive at all (...for all we know...) and yet her whole family has been wiped out—why? what did she do in the games, after the games? before the games? annie, who was herself reaped for the quarter quell, won when a huge wave drowned all the remaining tributes—think about it: is that what the capitol likes? so many "boring" deaths in one fell swoop, is that entertaining tv? of course not. what happened in that arena that caused this potential error in the system that ended up being played off as annie's great strategy?
point being, there are so many things we don't know but can possibly infer about the pre-quell lives of these specific tributes & how they may have rebelled, incited rebellion, or attempted to undermine snow/the capitol. yes, this quell was rigged. yes, snow did this largely to punish katniss in that moment in time specifically. no, the selection of her fellow tributes was not happenstance. (neither was, for that matter, the selection of the careers random: gloss and cashmere, siblings, beloved of the capitol and certainly the pre-determined winners.)
snow's fatal mistake here was not being able to let the sleeping dogs lie; he saw the chance to punish everyone who pissed him off, took it, and paid very dearly for the arrogant stupidity it takes to put panem's smartest and deadliest and angriest and rebelliest eggs in one tiny horrible basket.

all i fucking do is cry on tiktok. just saw ANOTHER video talking abt how the meadow song is actually the covey’s map to their graves.
Deep in the meadow, under the willow A bed of grass, a soft green pillow Lay down your head, and close your eyes And when they open, the sun will rise Here it’s safe, here it's warm Here the daisies guard you from every harm Here your dreams are sweet, and tomorrow brings them true Here is the place where I love you
a safe place away from the capitol GOODBYE SUZANNE HOW COULD YOU?!

So i saw your olive skinned post, i may have an anwser, but this is not the type of thing I want on my blog (purly fandom stuff/ no thinking pieces) so i anwner it on anon.
I think that the internet decided that olive skinned = poc because the internet is very american centered, the default is mostly thinking that when not specified it takes place in american. so olive skinned is thought of as poc (the other/ ailienated) instat of southern europian.(fancy in an acaptiable way[example how many people cleam to be italian in amarica while they have no other link with the cuture exept 4 generetions ago someone was form italy]
(I call poc as the other/ ailieneted beacase they are othen treated that way)
I see what you mean, but what I find interesting is lots of Americans have olive skin as well. I’m American, have Italian heritage, and am olive skinned lol.
But separately, the reason many Americans claim their ancestry even if its generations back is because the USA is a melting pot, and in being so, much of the culture of these different immigrants was lost over time. So I think we claim our heritage to try to hold on to a piece of that culture, to try to connect with other people whose families are from the same places as us. Unless you’re indigenous, not a single American is truly “american”, they’re irish, or spanish, or german, or what have you.

genuine curiosity here
why has the internet decided that olive skinned = poc ? because you can have an olive skin tone and be white (ie greek, italian). I for instance have olive skin but am white.
olive skin is a tone, not a shade, so why are people acting like you’re racist for depicting a character described as olive skinned as white, when that is typically the case?

in general, all the normalization of the sexualization of minors throughout the series is my least fav moment for ALL of the characters that take part in it. katniss is the only one who has a normal response to nudity and provocation with minors or in minor/adult situations in the entire series and everyone makes fun of her for it for being a prude ???
like chaff kissing katniss ? gross
johanna stripping in front of katniss and peeta ? gross
finnick being forced into prostitution (as a minor !!) ? gross
finnick’s chariot outfit having him be literally nude, in which was broadcasted live to all of panem, including children, and on display to katniss and peeta who were both still minors themselves ? gross
glimmer’s interview dress being sheer ? gross
peeta’s prep team saying peeta could’ve made a killing in the capitol (implying capitol elites would’ve been fighting for a chance to sleep with him (if only he wasn’t married)) despite the fact that he was still a minor ? gross
darius offering to trade kissing katniss for some of her game ? regardless of if it was a joke or not. he was an adult and she was a child. gross.
idc what you say, it’s not about being comfortable/uncomfortable with nudity. it’s not about modesty or prudishness. these were children being exposed to inappropriate and sexual situations, involving both adults and other minors alike. sex sells. sex has always sold. but forcing minors to sell and broadcast their bodies against their will is a new level of perversion that’s not talked about enough when it comes to The Hunger Games Trilogy.
gotta admit, peeta thinking it’s funny/seeing no issue with chaff, an old guy haymitch’s age, kissing katniss on the mouth for the sake of making fun of her, is my least favorite peeta moment ever.

No but the Hunger Games really said "what do you hate more- the atrocities or the people who commit them against you? Because like it or not there IS a difference. If you hate the people who commit acts of pure evil more than you hate the acts themselves, what will stop you from becoming just like your enemies in your pursuit of justice? What will keep you from commiting those very same acts against THEM when the opportunity arises? And what then? The cycle of pain and suffering will never stop. Round and round it'll go. Nothing will ever change. But. BUT. If you hate the atrocities. If you hate the vile, senseless acts MORE than you hate the people who did them to you. If you are able to see that evil is evil regardless of who does it... The cycle ends with you. No, you may never get justice. But you will never be responsible for making others, even your enemies, suffer the same crimes you have. The atrocities will never be committed by you, never by your hand. And that's the way you change the world. It's the ONLY way" and that's why I am sure it will never stop being one of the most relevant works of fiction ever created

i’m crying now. great
“Find Haymitch.”
A pair of little hands wrap around my boots and Lou Lou’s face, splattered in dry blood and dirt, materializes over them.
(SOTR page 224)
on my first pass, i was suspicious and thought that, surely, lou lou was sent to find haymitch by the gamemakers in her ear. and, of course, i still think that’s a very viable explanation…
however, on my reread, it just occurred to me that the much sadder explanation could be that as wyatt sacrificed his life to protect her, he may have—in his last moments—told lou lou to find haymitch, knowing that haymitch would do his best to protect her despite how he insisted on going it alone

i felt this hurt across my whole body
imagine being haymitch though. imagine being in 13, forced sober for the first time in years, and suddenly, you’re getting your boy back. the one you were so sure snow had stolen from you, like he’d stolen everyone else you’d ever loved. but somehow, by some miracle, your kid is here and he’s breathing and in one piece. imagine how excited you’d be.
imagine how excited you’d be for your (little) girl, your sweetheart of new, who’s about to get her love back. who’s about to experience that same joy you felt for those five minutes you had lenore dove in your arms, before the gumdrops and the poison and everything else came crashing down. only katniss’ joy isn’t going to be for five minutes.
imagine watching as your golden boy runs towards your sweetheart and you’re watching as her arms are outstretched, reaching for him like it appears he’s reaching for her.
now imagine how it must have felt for haymitch to realize the boy’s hands are locking around your girl’s neck and he’s not peeta anymore and this hijacked boy, this lou lou peeta is now strangling katniss. and you’re frozen in place.
just like you were frozen in place decades ago, when the peacekeepers were manhandling lenore dove. you have no choice but to hesitate because you’ve hesitated all your life, and that’s what you do, and once again it almost cost you everything.
once again, hesitating almost cost you your entire family.
no wonder haymitch is so angry all the time.
