Thank you so much! Here's my take:

(I saw that a lot of people loved the creepy Wasp design, and trust me I DID think about making Cricket look similar but like.. I can't. I can't do that to her. I'll do it to Lady Scarab.)

Cricket's redesign is definitely one of those where I kind of didn't really do anything to change it - I really like her current design, and so most of this was just changing little things I think would've made it better. The main adjustments I made were definitely to her proportions - Cricket's wiki description is slightly vague on her build (because she has book cover art, I assume) but I was honestly never a huge fan of how slender she appeared in some splash art since I always imagined her being a little bit shorter/more muscular. She isn't doing hardcore farm work at her agricultural school, but she still probably knows a thing or two about hauling massive plants from room to room for class. That might just be me, though.

I also made her glasses way thicker and bigger, and really tried to lean into the octagonal shape they have - although I might have made that a little bit unclear. I really like to think that she's like those characters whose eyes turn into little dots when she takes her glasses off. The rest of her design is relatively the same - aside from her orange tinted wings and additional black/mustard splotches. Finally, I thought it would be cute to change the bag around her chest into a smaller satchel that rests at her side and wraps around her neck. I think I can safely say Cricket's book was my favorite from all of the arc 3 books - from the presentation and exploration of Jewel hive to the temple of clearsight, and most importantly how Cricket interacts with these events as they come and go. I seriously think it's the gem of the arc (but you guys can probably tell that based on how much I talk about its content in my other posts.)

HEAVY on Careful ong

Have you ever been afraid of unintentionally making the audience dislike a character? That one situation where a writer creates a character that they particularly really like, but because of certain characteristics or actions/decisions of the character (which are often explained a little further on in the story) fans end up seeing them in the wrong light and getting a distaste for them.

For example, imagine if fans didn't like Storm because she has difficulty with empathy and ends up saying or doing "bad" things. Of course, this has very little chance of happening because she is one of the main protagonists and our girl is also a diva. But is there any character that you're both afraid of this happening to?

This has already happened with Careful due to her initial comment regarding Hope's survival (because she's something of a pessimist) and the fact that she's not as outspoken as Clever was (because she has young kids to look out for). Obviously, the first issue is going to be fixed when we redo the first few chapters because we sorta get why her comment came across in the wrong way. lol

But everything else seems to be geared towards the fact that she's not the "ideal victim" in the essence that she doesn't speak out or otherwise put up a fuss despite the fact she's clearly frightened of the outcome if she does do that. She's a perceptive individual who has no doubt that Jasper is dangerous and it was Clever's outspokenness that got her on the wrong side of him. Plus, she has kids. She's aware she has to tread very carefully.

It's almost like her name being Careful is meant to be an indicator of this or something.

I may sound snippy there but I've seen this kind of commentary be offered on real life victims of abuse who share Careful's circumstances and it's pretty disgusting. The mother of Judith Barsi being a pretty famous example. Don't get me wrong, I've come across enough cases where individuals have allowed their partners to target their children but I like to think we've shown the differences between these individuals and a victim like Maria Barsi by showing how Vicious responds to Jasper's abuse vs. her sisters. I also like to think these differences will be more pronounced in the upcoming Careful chapter we have planned after this one too.

And to go off what you said about Storm, we've had that kind of crap with Bright's character. Yes, Bright is chaotic and quite sinister... But that doesn't excuse people trying to diagnose her with conditions such as autism and ASPD? I mean, c'mon. We've had to state up and down that Bright is not canonically neurodivergent for quite a while because of this reason. Because we saw this kind of stereotyping coming in from a mile away.

Because uh no, she's not a 'psychopath'. Stop trying to slap that label on her. We're just into women's wrongs and them being chaotic and fun for no reason other than them being chaotic and fun.

Sadly, this is the flip side of doing a pro-disability comic. Some of our readers shall try and look for representation anywhere, even if it means playing into harmful stereotypes. Thankfully, we have plans for Bright's character that shall hopefully put such perceptions to rest. As that's what we try and do here at IHS Inc. lol - RJ
