Materials Needed:

Required: twist ties, tissue paper, masking tape, glue/hot glue.
Optional: wire, air-dry clay, masking tape, other papers.
For the poster board:
Required: Cardboard poster, 1 internet image, basic information about their person.
Context/ Overview:
This project is to have a basic foundation and awareness of the part women played in our society. Students research their selected person, make a cardboard poster, then create a miniature life-like mixed-media sculptural character that demonstrates active movement. Students will be able to comprehend and explain to their classmates the importance which this person has impacted.
Process:
· We will read Rosie Revere engineer as a class and discuss the theme, how the book steers away from gender norms, and what inspired Rosie to keep moving forward.
· As a group, we will discuss the importance of having female leaders in our society and produce examples.
· Each student will choose at least 3 females from the variety the class has produced.
· With the instructor, they will focus on choosing 1 female that they want to do their report on.
· The students will then gather information about the person from websites, books, and journals.
· The students will be provided with a draft outline worksheet. We will then use the outline worksheet as a resource to start constructing the draft for the paper that they will write.
· When they have transferred the outline to their first draft they will peer correct. Then they will go back and fix their mistakes. I will review their papers with them before they start their final writing.
· After finishing their final draft and printing it on their paper, we will move onto starting their poster board.
· The poster board is required to include at least 1 image of the female. Pasted onto the board should be the printed information about the person’s backgrounds, what they contributed to society, and why they chose to this individual.
· Moving onto the sculpture, they would construct the internal figure out of twist ties, proportionate to their character.
Wrap figure in papers using paper towels and tape to build up the figure.
Then begin wrapping figure with selected colored tissue paper and other items.
When students are all finished displays on desks will be used as a gallery to see students work.

March :Book Three Leader Post
March: Book Three by John Lewis focuses on The Civil Rights movement in 1963. March gives you a glimpse into what struggles and hardships African Americans had to go through to vote. John Lewis is one of the important 6 that took part in the Civil Rights movement and participant in the SNCC. The book takes us through the road of hardship and the gain of the right to vote in the United States. Many regular people such as Mickey Schwerner, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Dr. Martin Luther King fought for justice and equal rights. Other powerful people are featured in the book were Malcom X, Robert Kennedy, and Rosa Parks. The comic takes us through how normal people pushed back and struggled to cause a change. March also gives us a glimpse of the rise of women’s rights, which started to take a stronger stance. Mary King and Casey Haden were the ones that pushed the position of “women in the movement”. This book has a powerful message of a positive and brighter future after a struggle. We can see how the resistance of many groups and people made it possible to have a change in the United States. The book also shows us tragedy from both sides of the spectrum due to ignorance and ill timing. Ignorance due to the resistance of change from prejudice racial views. Ill timing due to the tragic loss of young children caught in the crossfire of injustice. March is powerful and relevant in today’s society because of the decline of progress made in our government and communities. Having our future students exposed and vulnerable to the truth in our society leads us to become the messenger affiliated with change. Like John Lewis, who carries the powerful message through the book we can feel a constant feeling of giving up and disappointment. “For so many months I’d kept my emotions bottled up to be strong for those counting on me to lead, but there I was all alone in the dark with it all” (51) The civil rights movement not only had an impact on the individuals connected but so did their families. We can see this in the book with the experience of Fannie Lou Hamer who feared for her family. My questions to the class are:
How would you encourage your students in the classroom to stand up for what they believe is right? How would you encourage your students to stand up and defend their beliefs but also the beliefs of others? As future teachers how can you keep a positive outlook for your students in the classroom, when you see the racial tension and injustice happening in today’s society? How are we able to evoke a change?

Response to Lilit’s Crossover

The Crossover by Kwame Alexander was a book that lead me through so many emotions. I was able to relate to this book at a deeper level. When this family is stricken with grief due to the loss of their father at the end of the book you can only imagine what they were feeling. Death as stated by Victoria is a normal thing that happens in our life process. In my classroom, I would also explain to the students that it is normal and an impactful event during anyone’s life. Having my students realize that many of their classmates could have different family dynamics than what is “regular”. For example, single parents or grandparents having guardianship due to parent loss could relate to this book. It is important for students to have respect for each other and be able to share. This action will contribute to acceptance and openness to the classroom. A different way to explain death would be to show students different animal cycles and the natural process they go through. Students will see visuals and be able to experience it as a lesson. Different people deal differently with traumatic situations, Josh dealt with it through basketball, he felt that it was something his father wanted him to do even if he was no longer there. That was his way of feeling his presence. “I feel closer to Dad. You feel better? he asks. Dad? I say. I open my eyes, and there is my brother. I thought you were- Yeah I know, he says.” (235) This book was different because it shows a brotherhood and a non-violent outcome from his father’s death. JB and Jordan previously having a falling out came together and united for support because they felt the same pain. I would encourage my students to find positive coping mechanisms such as physical activity, relaxation, and looking for support. The way I would address a student with family troubles would be to see how this trouble is affecting the student. I would try and talk to them and see what the problem is. If it is something that I can help my students with I would try to get them the resources they need. We need to remember that as future teachers we should place an importance on self-care because that will have an effect on our students.
