Cy Twombly was born this day in 1928. His painting Leda and the Swan, inspired by the Roman myth, is on view on our 4th floor as part of From the Collection: 1960–1969.

What needed to be said
This is probably the only time I will say this on social media, but what the hell. Several times now, first for Paris, and now for Brussels, I've heard over and over again the depiction of the "evil westerner" who only cares about his own, only mourns his own, and takes the rest of the world for granted. I'm not going to lie that I think there's nothing more disrespectful and backward than using one terrorist attack to make people feel guilty about the fact that they were mourning family, friends, innocents who have family and friends too, and showing them that "yeah, while they didn't care, you did". I even recall some using as an example the terrorist attack on a University in Kenya back in April 2015 without even looking at the date, but "hey, dead people so whatever works right?". I also witnessed these same people not batting an eye when Istanbul was attacked a few days ago. We are facing increasing risks of attacks, and this means that each time they strike, it is going to hurt someone's culture, someone's home, someone's parent friend or relative. What happened in Paris made me cry, because it's my home,  I had friends in danger, what happened in Brussels made me cry, because Europe is my home and it’s my future. That doesn't mean I didn't turn on the TV when Istanbul was hit, when Ankara was hit, when Nigeria is hit, when there are deaths in Syria, people drowning in the mediterranean sea, or starving at the balkan's boarders. And as far as I know, everyone does that too. May I therefore gently ask you to get your shit together and respect the choice of each and everyone and what they decide to mourn for, because you don't know their background, you don't know their story, and we can all agree that there's only so much suffering you can take.
