I know it's been confirmed by Gege that Geto wasn't a smoker when he started highschool, but I think it would be cute if he and Gojo initially teamed up to nag her about her smoking only for Suguru to get curious and try it for himself, and then Gojo is shocked by this betrayal and starts acting like he needs an oxygen mask

big fan of this actually. i'm a firm believer in suguru being a very prim and proper kid (just an unhappy one, which is understandable given that everybody around him probably thought he was crazy at some point because he kept talking about stuff nobody else could see) from the countryside before he comes to tokyo, who was warned about the dangers of peer pressure and bad influences in the big cities and simply brushed it off because why would he be influenced by somebody else's behavior, he has enough of a brain to think for himself, thankyouverymuch. and given the fact that he was raised very sheltered and every exposure he had to the rest of the world involved in him running away from the clan estate to stroll the streets of kyoto, i think satoru was in a similar situation as well regarding these stuff. then they met citygirl shoko, who was born and raised in tokyo and already a bit troubled back in middle school before she was recruited as a sorcerer, who was the personification of all sorts of bad habits and influences lol.

so i'm definitely on board with suguru (along with satoru) being extremely annoying at first about her smoking, at least for a couple of months into their friendship, which usually involved them making empty threats to rat her out to one of the teachers and almost and these bickerings always ended with her either glaring daggers at them or grabbing the nearest one to throw in a punch or two. but then they got drunk once (can't be a teenager and actually resist the idea of intoxication) and since shoko had been talking about the wonders of a drunk cigarette, so they each tried it once. satoru thought he was going to die, acted as if he was going to die and coughed up a bunch like the dramatic little shit he is. suguru coughed up on his first inhale, but then shoko thought him how to actually inhale properly (i'm thinking of that scene from skins where effy is teaching katy how to smoke) and he actually managed to finish one all by himself without coughing again. and when he realized it wasn't that bad, just not something to be constantly done because it would reduce his stamina and whatnot, he became what i call a borrower. he's automatically invited to go out for a smoke every time shoko walks out but he doesn't end up actually smoking 70% of the time and just accompanies her, sometimes they share a pack that they keep switching between the two of them back and forth but it's usually him copping one from the pack shoko usually carries, and he rarely actually inhales the smoke and instead just keeps it in his mouth and blows it out since it's more about hanging out with shoko instead of actually smoking.

the first time satoru sees him smoking one when he's not drunk, they get into a fight that involves blowing some part of the school up and trigger a thousand alarms because suguru summoned too many curses without permission. he acts like he'll throw up every time he seems them smoking together, complains about his lungs hurting to shoko at least three times a day, offers unwanted and disturbing facts about the dangers of lung cancer which doesn't phase either of them lol.

post-riko suguru, though, that's a different story. i think he'd try to lean into the habit as his depression becomes more overwhelming, hoping the nicotine would help out with these feelings of despair since he sees shoko going through entire packs in a week and can tell she's using this as a means of coping with the stress and he thinks it must be working because she can actually function despite the stress. doesn't do much for him, though, he figures it's because everybody picks their poison and this is just not for him. he still tries, even when he's not accompanying shoko and he's all alone by himself, which takes almost all of the joy out of this since it kinda shows how desperate he was to cling onto something that might make him feel better. this also explains why he'd be carrying a lighter on him even after defecting, maybe he had one on him when he was heading to the village he destroyed? (shameless reference to the pink lighter, apologies)
