I will ALWAYS hate the “the show starts with them, it ends with them.” Trope. I’ve always found it ridiculous. Gi-hun went through so much pain and agony, just for him to die in the end?? iirc, his whole reason for joining the game again was to stop anyone from dying, and to stop the games for good. Instead, everyone he loved died, him included, just for some baby. He killed Dae-ho, a character who was actively helping Gi-hun throughout the game. All it took was him to make one mistake because he was traumatized. But he couldn’t kill player 100, someone’s who’s been selfish and against Gi-Hun throughout the whole game?

Ntm Myung-gi, his whole character was him trying to help Jun-hee and her baby. The whole season he was trying to show her he’s sorry for what he did. Just for him to try to kill her baby?? It was completely out of character. Everyone in this season was out of character and it makes me so mad cuz season 1&2 where so good. All the characters eho died barely got any tbought afterwards and their deaths where so stupid for the plot

You know it's projecting and you know it's personal to Will and a sensitive topic at that time because at a different time, with a different person, Mike had the exact same argument as he did in 3x03.

The 'your priorities are all wrong, why are you prioritizing quality time with El over higher stakes things?' In 3x03 it was 'our friend group is falling apart - all so you can swap spit with some stupid girl'

But in 1x05 it was 'you're risking us not finding Will - because you like that a girl's not grossed out by you'

They're making the same point. Nothing against El but your priorities are fucked right now. But only once was his comeback "you don't like girls".

Because Lucas has never gotten close to knowing. Lucas has never been a position to even see him in a way that would hint.

There's no real risk with Lucas.

The text is the same. And honestly, for Lucas and Will, the subtext too.

But the subtext Mike receives is different. Lucas' is as it is. Will is saying the exact same thing. But he knows his own internal history with Will, so he doesn't hear "you're prioritizing El over our friend group", he hears "you threw away what we had".

He wasn't sensitive to it in the same way in season 1 (though he did still attack Lucas, so he was in other ways), and Lucas isn't the one he's sensitive to.

Same situation, different responses. That's always the most informational breakdown. The venn diagram. What should be the same but isn't.

i’ve seen someone say this before, but i fully believe that nancy and steve’s sex scene being interspersed with barb being brutally murdered showed that it was not meant to be a romantic and heartfelt scene, just like how mike’s “i love you” monologue being cut up by el being strangled and max being murdered in vecna’s mind world was meant to make it uncomfortable and stressful. if the writers wanted you to enjoy those scenes, they obviously wouldn’t have made them happen at such terrible and inconvenient times

In conclusion, once again, El's personal arc is about family more than romance and her relationship with Hopper seems to be what the writers are focusing on. Will's arc is about romantic love and his feelings for Mike. This kinda spells out how the ending of the love triangle, don't you think? Why would the writers focus on those two pairings in the last season of the show if Mike and El are supposed to be this endgame power couple? Why did Mike promise to be a team and to kill Vecna with his best friend who's secretely in love with him instead of his superhero girlfriend? Where exactly is the supposed "main couple of the show"?

How come Bylers are so aware of the huge love triangle with Mike El and Will but Milkshakes always deny it despite it being so obvious?? Like okay I get Milkshake is canon (air quotes) but it’s also canon that Mike has a crush on Mike so idk why we keep denying the obvious

the whole focus of this scene is the willel reunion more than the El and Mike reunion, her family is always going to be her real priority... she will never be as fixated with romantic love as some people believe she is, she grew up from the season 2 El that had an unhealthy fixation on Mike and in season 4 she had a whole journey focused on finding herself without needing Mike's validation 🥰

Something I noticed rewatching this scene:

How Will is always in the light

Im fairly sure this has been pointed out before but im gonna say if again

Firstly, the scene starts with them shown sitting next to eachother. They’re both dark, “in the shadows”

Furthermore, during this first half, before Will shows Mike the painting, Will is framed to be covered in light. The sun is directly behind him, lighting him up. Yet Mike still says in the shadows (sorry for the bad quality , I had to use my tv to take these two photos)

after he shows Mike the painting, Will is still covered in light. The light is right behind him still and it keeps shining down on the camera throughout the whole scene whenever we see Will. At times the light shines right on the camera making the whole screen very bright when Will is talking. (seen above)this happens many times, like the show is trying to make us notice the huge light behind Will

Also a good time to remind you guys that this scene was filmed in a studio with artificial lights, everything with lighting and shadows and backgrounds is intentional.

After Will shows Mike the painting, the rest of the scene is filmed just with them separately. Will, Mike, Will, Mike, Will, etc etc… the only time it shows the two of them in the same frame again is from Jonathan’s point of view.

This scene was intentionally filmed to focus on Mike and Will separately. Will is still showered in light, while Mike stays in the shadows. It’s like the very artificial lighting is trying to telling us that Will is Mikes light, his hope, what brings him comfort when he’s not okay. Why else would Will constantly be shown in the light from mikes pov?

Rewatch the scene with all this in mind, and you’ll see what I mean
