have you read any good heat (1995) fics? 👀

what a question,,, the short answer is Yes. the long answer is as follows:

as far as i'm concerned, the undisputed goat of heat fic writing is the immensely, immensely talented @literary-mafioso (same handle on ao3). she's basically the only fic writer i've ever read (for any fandom !!) where i'd read an original book/story of hers simply because i adore her writing that much. she's got a tremendous eye for setting detail and character work, but ultimately what sets her stuff apart (imo) is that the caliber of the writing itself is just So good. like to a degree that's basically unheard of for fanfic and pretty damn rare for published fiction too !! her 70s mchanna au "Some Weird Sin" (https://archiveofourown.org/works/41882487) is a masterpiece of a fic i return to all the time; it's pretty much everything you could want from a pre-canon au. this being said, i'm a sucker for neil lives aus and happy endings, so my favorite fic of hers is "Hotel Vast Horizon" (https://archiveofourown.org/works/41168901), part of the magnificent "Goodbye L.A." series (https://archiveofourown.org/series/3343315). these fics are where i go to heal my heart after the movie's ending rips it out for the thousandth time. "At the Chime of a City Clock" (https://archiveofourown.org/works/51071413) is also an excellent story i come back to on the regular, striking a great balance between heartfelt and hot. also worth mentioning is her vincent hanna x frank thief (1981) crossover series (https://archiveofourown.org/series/4023160), which ik isn't strictly heat 1995 but is beloved to me nonetheless, and "As Good as It Will Ever Be" (https://archiveofourown.org/works/65166283) aka my beloved beloved mchanna rockstar au. but honestly, you cannot go wrong with any of her stories. they're just That good.

in terms of fics Not by literary-mafioso, i'm a HUGE fan of "Accidents of Happenstance & Other Poems" (https://archiveofourown.org/works/48405979) by @/orangery on ao3 (idk if they have an acc on tumblr). this one's an absolutely delightful and very sweet au featuring poet vincent (!!), dad-that-stepped-up neil (!!!), and funny + earnest teenage gabriela (!!!!). this author's time loop story (https://archiveofourown.org/works/58386763) is heavier emotionally but also phenomenally-written :) i also really enjoyed "the remains of the dead" (https://archiveofourown.org/works/58452445) by @dirtyscholar / @/toxic_androgyny on ao3, definitely emotionally heavy but very well-written and true to the characters.

as of writing this, there are 135 fics in the heat ao3 tag and most of them are not very long. it probably wouldn't take much time/effort to just read the whole tag. but these are my favorites, so i hope this helped and i hope you enjoy !!! i'm always down to talk about heat and heat fic, so please let me know what you think !!!
