Cannot recommend highly enough. This anthology is brimming with witches and other kinds of weirdness. I’d say it also authentically captures many aspects of the cultural experience of growing up in this region of the South (I speak as someone from rural KY, though not a native of the Appalachias themselves). There are fascinating historical allusions woven into the narrative, the characters are compelling and well-developed, and overall it takes a truly original and subversive approach to storytelling that feels at once rooted in the folklore from which it draws inspiration and also refreshing and revitalizing.

I really love that we never find out where Hill House actually is, geographically. its space is purely relational; far from the big city, across streams and along winding roads with country tearooms. it turns the house into less of a physical space than a mythical one. you too could find Hill House. pick a road, and start driving, and it will unwind before you, taking you there.
