i ask ppl to reassure our social bond and simultaneously acknowledge that i know my anxieties aren’t rational. i tell them that the “anxiety goblin” has a question, then i ask. they take kindly to it. plus it helps me cope because it allows me to both externalize and trivialize the emotion, in turn distancing myself from that anxiety.

They should invent a method of asking for reassurance that nobody secretly hates you that doesn't make people secretly hate you.

oh yes ofc. you are very right there—i use the term “racism” in my tags in the very literal sense of the word meaning prejudice against a race of people, not the sociological sense of systemic racism.

trust, i get the wariness that some poc may have—not wanting to be microaggressed and the feeling that the white people in question just won’t be able to reckon with the poc’s racialized perspective of the world. the notion of white public space allows white people to be entirely blind on such things, thus rendering them offhandedly ignorant (at best). i too, as a Black woman, have that wariness; however, i don’t use that as justification not to befriend white people at all

from a sociohistorical standpoint, i can’t stand white people just as much as the next guy. however, from a humanist standpoint—the one i actively adopt in my daily interactions—white people are, well, people. i personally know poc who are proud not to have white friends (notably, they’re the same people who said i “talk white”… i wonder if there’s a correlation there /s). i find that to be a disturbingly shallow and close-minded politic—white people are not intrinsically demon spawn. they’re just lil dudes in the world too, and you’re missing out if you blanket refuse to develop friendships and other social relationships solely because they’re white.

calling northeastern racism “diet racism” is a far cry from reality. sure they’re not yelling slurs (except for when they do!)

instead, they engage in this subtle, covert racism that wreaks havoc on the psyche of POC, particularly children of color. racism up there manifests primarily as silence, glares, stares, offhanded, thoughtless remarks, “jokes”, and ostracization/exclusion. yet they will never overtly remark on your race.

i was a ski instructor for a semester at my college. i was the only instructor of color. all of my fellow instructing peers completely ignored me—basically didn’t talk to me unless they had to. if i tried to enter the conversation, they’d address me and carry on with their original conversation, without me. never once did they say anything explicit about race. what else could it have been? i was polite, well-meaning, friendly, and kind, just as they were. yet, they ignored me. i couldn’t accuse them of racism—they didn’t actually say anything of the sort, so they’d accuse me of “pulling the race card”.

there’s nothing diet about “diet racism”. it’s a pervasive air that perpetually colors your perspective—that gaslights you into thinking that you, personally, are a problem, rather than the actual “problem” of your race. in some ways, it would be easier if they did just call me a slur. at least then, i wouldn’t have any reason to doubt.
