"Shit, sorry. That's just what Willow called you, so I–"

"Assumed?"

"...Uh, yeah. Won't happen again, though."

Well, I guess "everybody warms up quickly" was a slight overstatement. I don't really get the issue, but I could hear the passive aggression from upstairs.

Dawna, meanwhile, has been keeping herself busy with the spare parts we got from the Riverblossom settlement. While Ora's mechanical achievements might seem more practical, Dawna is keen on bringing some automation back in our lives. The nightly metalwork can be a bit overwhelming, but she's been thriving with a new project, so I don't have the heart to discourage her.

Everyone warms up to Emile quickly, myself included. In all fairness, though, we would probably warm up to any new face...

He even had me and Winnie out for a snowball fight! ...Up until Winnie remembered what brought him here, and gave him an earful for being out in the cold again.

I guess that brings us back to the Hideaway, reader. Safe to say, we were all surprised at our uninvited (and unwitting) guest. He was still out of it when Kazuko and Winnie brought him in, but when Winnie helped him warm up, he was surprisingly personable!

From what he says, Emile Orosco was thrown out by his last group. Why? Well, just like Ora...

...he's a werewolf! Apparently, the group 'couldn't handle' his nightly hunger pangs and howling. It seems like he's been wandering from settlement to settlement, and got lost in one of the storms.

Well, phooie zooie to that. He says he doesn't have many skills to offer aside from the wolf strength. Even so, he's a wise-cracker, and he gives me the vibe that he could make friends with a tree if he wanted to. Heck, he seems super interested in the Rosemary Report, which makes him a fast friend in my book!

Kazuko lingered late at the new store after some finishing touches, as he often does. He's diligent about all of the buildings, since he still feels "underqualified" for the job.

On his way back, though, he stumbled upon someone in the snow!

I had gone to bed hours ago, and we've had storms off and on the past few days, but it was still a shock. Thankfully, the man was still alive, if very cold.

We rushed him off to the Hideaway; we had more supplies there to help him.

"Honey...are you sure about this? Gosh, I was never very photogenic, I can't imagine..."

"You look amazing, my love, don't try to change my mind. Will you please stop hiding your face?"

[simraeth]

It is healthy to break out of the routine, some nights...just a little bit.

[simraeth]

Kazuko, finally free to set about building again, is gone for most of the day; it's a bit lonely, but thankfully, I have my routines. I sew, I craft, I restock. And I have Sampson, and her routines. I take her for a walk and give her a bath, make sure she's clean and well-fed. After the unpredictability of SimCity, it's a relief.

...If only I had an instrument to pass the time.

Sometimes, I do worry about Kazuko. He's a quiet and diligent man, but even our closest friends here in the Refuge don't quite see how he worries. About himself, about his mother. About the other survivors. About the endless winter. I hope when the snow thaws, I can help him grow the most beautiful garden.

In the meantime, I hope he can have pleasant dreams of it in our bed. Watcher knows I will.

"Oh...! I hadn't taken such a technique into account...this should halve my preparation time, at least."

"My love, how long have you been sewing?"

"Two more jackets, honey, and one more pair of pants, and three more shirts and another pile of scrap fabric, and-"

"...Well, if I can't convince you to take a break, at least hand me a roll and I'll lighten the load."

Business continues as usual, though Miss Pearson continues to be our only out-of-town customer. It feels rude to pry and ask her to pester her fellow survivors to risk the trip up here...and anyways, we probably aren't ready for a steady stream of strangers, fast learner that Willow may be.

...I did have Kazuko complain about Willow's liberal idea of a "break," but he relented when I reminded him of our lax behaviors at the Hideaway.

[simraeth]

"Willow, Kazuko and I appreciate it so much, I don't even know where to begin. I mean, I know how busy you get with the reports, I hate to take you away from that for even a second, but, but we are sort of swamped-"

"Winnie, Winnie, breathe for me, okay? Look, even if I had a harder job to do, I'd drop it to help you out. Consider it my apology for..." Willow stops, almost saying the word 'everything,' heavy with years of meaning that she's scared to unpack. Instead, she pivots to a more casual, "You know, freshman year of uni. You saved my butt, I save yours."

I know she'll read this later and get a bit flustered, but Willow taking over my role was truly a lifesaver. She does have a way with words, after all.

"Are you awake, love...?"

"Hm...I'll ask tomorrow who can help with the shop."

Willow again, cutting in because...how exciting! Our first visitor to our budding settlement. Reader, you should have seen Salome's face when she told us, she was tripping over her words.

Kerie Pearson, or just Pearson, as she asks we all call her, is a surly woman, she could give Nadine a run for her money. No one confronts her on it, but whenever she visits Kazuko and Winnie's shop, she's critical and unsubtle about her doubts...but none of us can hold it against her. She's quite mysterious, only ever stopping by for supply runs and refusing food or hot drinks, but Pearson will usually humor us with some small talk and updates from the outside world. Time will tell if she's a good ally, I guess!
