devlog #1
honestly it's a really weird feeling when something you've been doing for quite some time didn't turn out the way you expected it to be.
it kind of feels like a disappointment in myself, and instead of just finally finishing the project, getting that important first experience and then moving on to a new game, i start overthinking it and focus on the wrong things (and also procrastinate a lot). what i thought was okay and was even proud of now seems ridiculous, i start comparing myself to other devs and other experiences, like trying to somehow change mine to resemble someone else's.
as much as i do understand different people have different backgrounds and knowledges sometimes it's a bit difficult to give yourself a mental slap and get back to work when you see SO much cool and absolutely amazing beginning devs and their projects, and then there's yours, perhaps a bit silly and far from being perfect.
i never saw people talk about that thing and just hope i'm not alone in this haha. want to get my thoughts together and just clear my mind, because sometimes it really feels like a giant snowball that's weighing on you constantly (never be both an overthinker and perfectionist at the same time).
anyway, back to the devlog part. down here i'm mostly yapping about tiny details and fixes of minor issues because currently i learn blender and don't have much to show in the game itself.
1) camera movement in tutorial.
now works properly! when you reach a certain part in the dialog, one camera swaps to another to make the explanations a little clearer (i also hid everything i could so as not to spoiler that tiny bit of plot the game has, so it looks kind of empty).
2) stats and restart menu.
to stay alive you have to both avoid monster and keep your stats in check. by that i mean that the lights should be on (generator breaks sometimes) and also have enough sticks in the fireplace to keep yourself warm.
depending on which stat drops too low, you will lose the ability to run or the visuals of the location will change (i also want to distort the background sounds to make it tad uncanny and more noticable).
if both stats drop to zero or you get caught, you die. a dead screen opens and you can either start the game again right away (skipping the cutscene), or get back to the main menu first.
3) flashlight.
future me, never EVER use point light again. spot light ONLY. It was a pain in my ass for a while now because i didn't understand why the lights were coming through the walls and how to fix it. guess what, the solution was much simpler than i thought.
4) details!!! sfx!!!
i'd call it gluing the game together. i used to just manually switch the necessary scenes and leaving things for later because it was kind of unimportant at the moment, but now i finally added transitions between scenes, small details like animations when the text appears in the dead screen, sfx when pressing buttons/picking up stuff or using it, fixed the volume of sounds in relation to each other.
whole locations's darker (idk if i should keep it that way or change back to the way it was), fireplace finally has fire lol.

and also the monster can now randomly do scary sounds. i was really uncomfortable while trying to find the proper ones, like literally i listened to tons of people just breathe in my ear ;-;
feel violated, 0/10 experience.
anyway, congrats, we made it to spring! :D
going back to my cave and trying to stay motivated, stay tuned!

hey!
i'm a beginning indie developer and really passionate about this whole thing, planning to post my progress in learning and making games alongside with random thoughts on gamedev 🧌
currently i have two projects i'm working on:
night in the cabin (short / 3D / horror)
you rented a small house in the woods, wanting to gain energy after what seemed like endless days of relentless work. little did you know someone really wanted to keep you company.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
about 20 minutes of gameplay where you being chased by a monster while trying to make it ‘til the morning.
main purpose of this project is to understand coding a little better and learn about some basic stuff in unity in general.
almost done btw! still have to do a lot of polishing, but most of the project is finished, and i think i’ll be able to release it soon 🤺
coulrophobia (≈2 hours long / 2D / horror, adventure)
you play as a boy who just faced an awful tragedy in his family. his memories are total blur, and wanting to finally get to the truth, which everyone tried so vainly to hide, he will have to face his fears, putting his life at certain risk.

right now i’m not really sure if i’ll ever finish this, since it takes LOTS of time to draw all the stuff. in my absolutely unprofessional opinion 2D story games right now are much less popular than 3D story games, so i’ll think what to do with this project after eventually finishing the first one.
also i'm not a native speaker, so my english surely isn't great and sometimes i make silly grammar mistakes. terribly sorry, try to bear with it :D
thanks for stopping by, stay tuned!
