But in seriousness, I’m glad you’re interested in this silly little AU! ‘tis the result of many months of brainrot. I’m not very good at condensing information, but I’ll do my best to give an overview of what the hap is fuckening over there!

So, what exactly is this AU? Basically, it’s this:

For real, though, this AU is basically the aftermath of the Ancients ascending and leaving their children- the iterators- behind to fix all the problems they caused. They’re not massive supercomputers, here, but they are still purposed organisms!

Leading up to the Final Mass Ascension, the Ancients created the iterators to be their successors: heirs to the world that would look after it after they were gone. They were treated much like the Ancients’ own children, though full obedience and subservience were still expected. They were raised as lab assistants, priests, or even just to be members of a family.

When they all suddenly left, the iterators were left behind not with a Great Problem, but with ten thousand smaller ones. The entirety of civilization had vanished save for them, and they were left scrambling to pick up the pieces. Infrastructure crumbled, and anyone with any sort of administrative privilege became invaluable. The global network quickly fell apart. Supply chains ground to a halt. The ecosystem had long been ruined. To anyone else, salvaging this world would be an impossible task.

But not to the iterators! The imperative that was in the Ancients remains in them. They hopped to it, taking on the task with necessity, doing whatever they could to keep things operational. Many iterators switched roles or took up new mantles as the need arose.

They didn’t really have a choice in the matter, though. Iterators themselves cannot ascend, so there was no way they could just up and leave. The only one who ever succeeded was Sliver of Straw, and her “death” caused a massive uproar. Droves of iterators flocked to the Void Sea, desperate to follow in the footsteps of their parents, only to be painfully chewed up and spit back out.

No one knows how she succeeded, but she was quickly revered as a Saint, believed to have some quality that the other iterators did not possess. A specialized guard was put up around any entrances to the Void Sea to prevent any other iterators from harming themselves in an attempt to Ascend. And life carried on, albeit with much more tension and distress.

And our beloved local group is living through all of that! Sliver of Straw’s death hit Moon hard, as the two were close, but luckily she had a great support system to get her through it. In the absence of the Ancients, they have each other. And despite the trials and tribulations, it looks like they’ll all be able to move on and continue forward towards a better future, where the past can’t hurt them anymore. Everything will be okay.

That is, until Pebbles almost kills Moon.

You can probably imagine how this goes based on what happens in-game: Moon collapses. Sig rushes her to the hospital. She codes. Innocence extracts a confession from Pebbles that, whatever he did, it was on purpose. Chaos ensues. Pebbles shuts himself away and cuts all contact. The group crumbles from both the stress and Moon's absence. She was everything to them. And they almost lost her because of him.

Life still goes on, albeit shakily. Sig is doing his best to keep in contact with the rest of the group, as well as supporting Moon in her hospital stay. She didn't die, but it was a close call, and recovery is slow. She can't get a hold of Pebbles, and neither can anyone else. And, being the protective big sister Moon is, she worries. So she asks Sig to keep an eye on him for her until she can come home again.

Sig does not want to do this. But, he loves Moon more than he hates Pebbles, so he agrees to keep an eye on her shut-in of a brother. Things are unpleasant between them for a long time, but the longer Sig spends around Pebbles, the more he finds himself asking questions, such as: "Why is this guy such a bitch?" And: "Why does Moon care about him so much?" Slowly, surely, they start to become accustomed to one another. Not friends, though; Sig is only doing this for Moon. Not for Pebbles.

Don't worry about him. He's doing alright, surely.

Not too long after NSH agreed to keep an eye on Pebbles, Suns entered the fray unexpectedly. This had the potential to go over very badly with Pebbles, but he didn't seem eager to continue whatever spat the two had gotten into, and they quickly made amends. However, that doesn't mean everything is smooth sailing, especially with Pebbles and Sig. At least everyone is trying, to some degree...

I'm glad so many people are interested in this AU! It makes me really excited to flesh it out in more detail. Wanted to practice comic-making and decided to use a bit of dialogue for a scene I'm planning to write. Suns is really carrying the Triple Divorce, here. Pebbles, you are bad at this.

And absolutely! That would make me do a backflip out of sheer delight. (Love the way you draw Ragequit btw, your propaganda is startlingly effective.)

The designs aren't set in stone; the two most important things about them are the wires ("hair" style) and how they approach fashion (modern clothing or traditional wear)! I'll elaborate more on the world-building and stuff later, but how an iterator dresses says a lot about their views on their late benefactors! The "why" is more important than the "what" in this case. Feel free to put NSH in the most horrendous graphic shirt you can imagine.

UI, SOS and CW also have designs, but for now we just have the main four :]

So instead of doing anything productive with my limited energy, such as Artfight, I instead decided to draw an AU that's been cooking in my brain for months that I have yet to do anything substantial with. You're welcome.

I don't think I'll ever top that Pebbles face, honestly.

Okay two doses of context. Basically the AU leans on the idea of iterators being "the children of the ancients", in a more literal sense. It's an off the strings AU where the iterators are left alone after their "parents" ascended and, for some reason, they can't follow (save for one). They're left behind in a broken world with sudden, extreme independence and so many environmental problems to fix.

Besides the aftermath of both Sliver of Straw's suicide/death/ascension and the ancients' departure, the AU focuses on Sig trying to keep the friend group after Pebbles sends Moon into the hospital (purposefully? accidentally?) and she asks him to keep an eye on her shut-in of a brother. Obviously Sig is still angry at Pebbles, but he loves Moon more than he hates Pebbles, so he bites the bullet and plays babysitter. No one is happy about this.

Lots of shenanigans, but this AU is ridiculously angsty. Like, it's a coming-of-age story about generational trauma and suicide contagion. Any posting about it on here will have appropriate warnings or- more likely- pass over it entirely, but if it ever does get written down? Ho boy. Ohhh boy. Who knew a story about machines trying to end their own existence would translate into sensitive content in a retelling?! Lmao

Originally it didn't quite click but then I discovered SparkedFires' Sig characterization and suddenly the whole plot made sense. So if you're reading this thank you for creating the most goated character of all time, he makes the plot go 'round :] Also the idea of iterator "umbilical" tails is big brain and inspired more weird biology so I adopted that as well :]]] thank you hehehe. Sig crocs in your honor

Also those banners do translate to something, it's basically the main premise of the story: the mass ascension event, Pebbles hurting Moon, and Sig trying to carry the friend group on his jacked shoulders.

Oh wait the AU is called "The Solution" because everyone thinks they know the solution to the problem at hand but in actuality nobody does :D yay! Surely this will not have consequences!

I think it’s pretty cool. Tbh it has grown on me a lil the more I see it, tho I do prefer the “I hate you” to “we’re fucking buddies w an understanding” type thing. Like a strong friendship or something like that.

I like the idea of them warming up to each other and coming to terms w one another’s mistakes. Building a friendship out of soon to be trust. I think that’s cute.

I’ve drawn Ragequit before for the sillies but yeah. (I didn’t go to sleep until 5am so idk what I think fully lmao)
