one of the worst things about fandom is when people headcanon a certain character as gay and suddenly that becomes the only valid, practically unofficial-official canon reading of that character's sexuality. gay. just gay. character has shown romantic or sexual desire for women? it's comphet, don't worry, he's still gay. character isn't interested in sex much at all? it's because he hasn't fucked a man, obviously. character has lots of women friends? they are the hags to his fag, he's gay, why are you even trying. and it all seems like a very Transformative and Woke way to read a character until you step back and realize how much biphobia, acephobia, misogyny, and transphobia are baked into the adamant refusal to accept The Character as anything other than gay. it's horrendous, actually. but you will get shot in the streets for this.

I never gave much thought about lesbian nancy before but seeing your post made me rethink how I view her. looking back I think that her being lesbian would have made a lot more sense than her having romantic feelings for Steve and Jonathan and switching between them. I think having the sapphic element to her character would have made her arc of not wanting to end up in a nuclear family like her parents makes it more meaningful, especially through the lense of Karen also being sapphic where Nancy gets to break the cycle and love who she wants although I think that this may just be the joyren brainrot speaking.

Ronance also should have been endgame the duffers wrote themselves into a corner with Vickie where Nancy was right there as a love interest for Robin (especially since she’s an established character and both girls have a more developed relationship if it makes sense)

Lesbian Nancy and Ronance endgame were huge wastes of potential tbh.

Oh, that happens. All I needed was a single collage post about Nancy being a lesbian to be fully convinced. I really wanted Nancy to end S3 having broken up with Jonathan after that fight ended with "I guess we just don't understand each other anymore". I've yapped about this here before, but that fight was SO important to me. And the theme never really died, either - Jonathan being scared that he and Nancy will end up resenting each other because he absolutely will be led by the collar his whole life if he goes to Emmery for her still plays into "breaking the cycle" of the unhappy nuclear family.

I'm still holding out hope for Ronance endgame, after I read and reblogged a post (basically a dissertation) about how Vickie could actually be into Steve and not be a lesbian at all. Also, if Nancy and Robin grew closer in S5, I think it would give meaning to Steve's declaration to Nancy in S4. Because then, it wouldn't have come out of nowhere for padding the plot - it would be there because they needed to establish Steve's feelings to create the tension of Robin being into Nancy, Nancy reciprocating it, and Robin and Steve having tension because "hey, I really like your ex that you are still hung up on, but I think she's a lesbian so you should get over her" is great to make Steve think about his feelings and evaluate himself. (and find out he actually likes Jonathan 🤷‍♀️)

It's impressive how the writers of ST can create such great setups and just. Not deliver on them. Nancy being a lesbian, Steve being the one who bought Jonathan the new camera, Dustin and El being like each other's type romantically, Eddie being a coward actually being important to his arc - these are all things that were set up and not explored and I freaking hate it.

The Byler Big Bang is a fanwork event based on the Stranger Things ship of Mike Wheeler & Will Byers meant to create an explosion of content while providing structure, deadlines, and of course, community support to writers and artists. 

This year is especially exciting as we'll be posting during the hype period of Stranger Things 5's release!

How does a Big Bang work?

A Big Bang event is a challenge for fic writers to write longer fanfictions (10k words or more), partnering them with an artist to create accompanying artwork. 

Writers sign up to take part in the challenge and begin writing stories. Artists will be able to claim stories to work on after the authors are 50% through. Then, during designated posting periods, the author and artist post their new work for the fandom to see!

How do I get involved?

Writers can sign up as authors to participate by creating a fanfiction of 10k words or more over the course of the next months.

Artists can sign up as artists to participate by being paired with an author to create 1 or more artworks to accompany their fic.

Artists can also sign up as pinch-hitters to create additional art for works in the event that other artists drop out after claims.

late-stage capitalism turning all our hobbies into side-hustles and into self-employment with little to no benefits and whatnot

This is probably a good way to get myself blocked by people, but I have such a problem with how normalized it's become for fanartists to have a Patreon and lock so much of their art behind a paywall. It's not about copyright infringement. Like whatever, I don't care about that. It's about the fact that it goes against what fandom is supposed to be about. It takes something that's supposed to be about freely sharing and turns it into a business proposition. Fandom is supposed to be a gift economy, where we do this for the community and social bonds it brings, where we give generously with no expectation of getting compensated for it.

And beyond that (and at the risk of sounding petulant), it's not fair. Imagine how much (justified) shit a writer would get for posting like, the first paragraph of a fic and then going, "To read the rest of this, first subscribe to my Patreon!!" I'm not saying I have any desire to make money off of fanfiction. I don't. But I do think it's strange that the labor of not only writing but of gif making and fanvid making and writing meta and even commenting and reblogging, all these things that make up the backbone of a fandom, is done for free, and fanart has become a thing where it's almost expected that every artist will have a Patreon and lock much of their art. I really hate it, if I'm being honest.

what are your favourite rare pairs at the moment?

I mean, Henderhop goes without saying lol it is a constant.

Madwheeler is my original rarepair simply because I shipped it since I watched S2 the first time. No one can change my mind that Max had a crush on Mike in S2 and S3.

Madwise and Willel both snuck up on me in the last few months! I have been very invested in the scenarios for them that I built up in my mind.

Aaaand I am including Stonathan in this one because a lot of fics in their tag are Stoncy fics, so the number of fics of them exclusively is even lower. And I freaking looove them, I have been in a stonathan phase lately and I freaking need them together real bad lol

Max had almost made it out of the school building when she heard the one voice she was dreading to hear the entire day, calling out to her. She picked up the pace, and reached the double doors to the outside. The voice, unfortunately, grew closer.

He reached her just after the doors closed behind her. God damn it.

"Max! What the hell!" Mike appeared beside her, but Max kept walking.

"Leave me alone, Mike," Max replied, not even looking at him. Too risky. She needed to get away, or she would do something stupid.

"C'mon, you haven't criticized me or mocked me all day!" Mike rushed to intercept her stride, startling her for a moment, trying to make her face him. Max's eyes darted towards his face, then back down. He was too close. "And now you won't even look at me!" Max ignored him, going around him to continue her Get Away From Me march. "Did I do something? What happened?"

"What are you talking about? I did look at you," Max lied over her shoulder.

Mike grabbed her forearm and whipped her around. Max looked between the hand holding her and the boy's inspecting expression, and immediately avoided his gaze in favor of trying to remove his grip on her. Crap. She really couldn't look at his face anymore, huh? She would feel pathetic if she wasn't so focused on running away. "Let go, Mike," she said, doing her best to make it sound like a warning and not a plead.

Mike, however, grabbed her other wrist and held her there. He moved his head to try and meet her gaze, and Max just avoided him as best she could without being able to turn and leave. "I knew it," he spoke, somewhat triumphant, while Max tried to shake her arms free of him, "you can't look me in the eye! Why is that? Why aren't you talking to me?"

Max was reaching unprecedented levels of frustration with Mike. Why couldn't he just let her leave? She was trying so hard to stuff her newfound feelings deep, deep down in her mind, so that they could disappear and things could come back to normal. Why couldn't he let her do that in peace? Why did he have to chase her down like this?

"Mike, let me go!" She kept moving her arms and trying to walk away.

"Not until you look at me and tell me what's going on!" Mike was struggling, but his grip didn't let up; the more she fought it, the tighter it got. This situation is just ridiculous - time for drastic measures.

Max looked Mike in the eyes, trying not to betray how taken aback she was at their sudden proximity. "What's happening is there is a guy who is being a creep, following me and grabbing me and will make me lose the bus!" She spat out, putting all her building frustration into the words.

"Oh, don't play that card, everyone knows we're friends-"

"Mike, if you don't let me go, I will scream!" Max interrupted, and looked past Mike, taking a breath and opening her mouth to do yell out, "Hel-"

She never finished the word. Mike's lips were shutting her up.

Max squeezed her eyes shut, weakly hitting Mike's chest with her restrained hands. He stood there, pressed against her, until she relaxed into the kiss and stopped fighting him - and once she did, he continued to kiss her, moving one hand from her wrist to her back and pulling her closer. Max grabbed at his shirt, snaking her now free hand up to the back of his neck, weaving her fingers in the hair against it. Max didn't want it to end.

Mike pulled away first, slowly. Max looked up at him, wide eyes and breathless - his lips were, somehow, even redder than usual, and his half-lidded gaze was darting between each of her eyes. Max tried not to think about how much she liked him looking like this.

"Why did you do that," she asked, unable to put a question mark in her tone of voice.

"You were gonna scream," Mike answered, voice soft and low, "and my hands were busy." He swallowed.

Max nodded, looking down and untangling herself from him. They stood there, a feet apart - for about two seconds, before Max turned around and just bolted towards the bus. She heard Mike calling out to her in the distance, but this time, he finally didn't chase after her.

It was fine. This was just the only way to shut her up. It didn't mean anything. No need to give that kiss any more meaning. No need to get her hopes up.

He only wanted to shut her up.

Love this flavor of Max in absolute denial over what happened, hehehe Sometimes a little bit of angst is good!

Is it bad that I believe that Will would have been a better love interest to El than Mike, I know that many people in the fandom view them as having a sibling like bond but I don’t see it and I think that they had potential for something more. I’m not sure how much of a shipper of them you are but I remember seeing you reblog a post about them. I think that Will and El would work well together because of how similar they are they’re sort of like an inverse of Madwheeler where Max is basically the female equivalent of Mike El is basically the female equivalent of Will. Will and El have both been presented as understanding and empathetic individuals who have gone through trauma which no one can relate to, I think that both of them have an element of wanting to be understood or seen as normal and I think that if they were together they would be able to relate to each other in ways that no one else ever could. there’s a also the tragedy of Will falling in love with El the girl who took his best friend and maybe crush away. no matter how hard he tries to he can’t bring himself to hate her she saved his life and he notices that he sees her in a way that Mike never could. if we also factor in the possibility of Mike having feelings for Will, than El who secretly loves Will the only person who truly understands her is stuck in a relationship where her supposed boyfriend Mike loves Will in a way he could never love her.

They are just soooooo angsty together. Everytime I write about Will, I write him being angsty, and having El being an active part of his narrative instead of this distant presence that she is presented as in canon is so so so enticing.

I see it as a healing pairing, really. It's both of them learning to love themselves by loving someone who is just like them. Will thinks he's different, out of place, a mistake - and here is El, someone who's ACTUALLY super different, who was raised in a lab and doesn't know how to be a person, who looks normal until you get close to her and see that she isn't. In my little shipper brain, he would make an effort to help her conform, be normal, be accepted, because if she can, maybe he can, too. But in the process, he realizes that her being different shouldn't mean she shouldn't be loved. And he sees her in pain when she's bullied, when she's rejected by the world for being too different, and he just wants to make it all go away, because he knows who she is, and she doesn't deserve this. Maybe he doesn't deserve it, either.

And El in this pairing? El, who's whole purpose in this narrative was to find Will, to bring him back, to tell him to hold on because help was coming. El, who held his hand when he was cold and losing hope in a parallel dimension. El, who spent a year away from everything and everyone, who couldn't even see him when he came back, the fruits of her labor, the success of her endeavor. El, who is swept away by Mike the moment she is reintegrated with the Party, and who sees Will, hangs out with him regularly even, and yet - he doesn't talk to her. So, she doesn't speak to him, either. After all, she has Mike's full attention, wasn't that what she wanted? Isn't that what she wants? And when they end up living together, in the worst time of her life, he can't even have a conversation with her. He doesn't talk to her. Why doesn't he talk to her? They go to school together, they go home together, neither of them has any other friends around, why won't he talk to her? Why doesn't he ever want to talk to her?

And one thing about El is that she's not above begging for love. She will cry, she will be angry, and if nothing works, she will be petty about it. And that against Will, who's more mellow but still lashes out whenever his emotions get more intense, it has a big potential for a lot of bery dramatic fights and interactions and I fucking live for that.

IT'S JUST SOOOO ANGSTY AND SO GOOD I go feral with them. Good thing there was an ask about them in the kiss roulette 😉 so I can write about them more!
