Third Year of my Adult Nursing Degree.
So, I am officially a third-year student nurse, and I am absolutely over the moon about this. I can’t believe how quickly the last 2 years have gone and this is the final year. This year is the only thing standing in my way of becoming a Qualified Nurse. It hasn’t been the easiest of degrees and a lot of the time I have felt like I’m on a rollercoaster because of the emotional highs and lows, the pressures of assignments and exams, the expectations from my mentors on placement whilst trying to maintain a social life as well as keeping sane. I have had my good days as well as bad days. Fortunately, the good days overpower the bad days by a million miles, but when you do have a bad day it genuinely feels like the end of the world and you want to quit. It makes you feel like what you’re doing isn’t good enough, that you’re not smart enough. However, I have learnt to overcome this negative self-talk and work through this. I’ve nursed patients back to full health, I’ve held hands of patients who are taking their last breath and then maintained their dignity throughout last offices. I’ve comforted the family members of a patient who has passed away. I’ve cried with patients, laughed with patients, been frustrated or angry with patients. But I always feel I have made a difference to someone’s life. It is the most incredible feeling knowing that although they may not remember my name or my face, they will always remember the kindness and compassion I have shown them.
I am so fortunate to be where I am, to have had the opportunities and the experiences. I was one of the last Nursing cohorts to have a bursary, to have my tuition fees paid for. The NHS is a wonderful, amazing service which can be abused. I am really thankful to every healthcare professional I have ever worked with. We do an amazing job.
My name is Alice and in one more years time, I could be YOUR Nurse.
