Where do you think someone who knows maybe 5 words/phrases in French should start if they're going to France in two months (i.e. I am) ? I really don't want to just be speaking Spanish and English in France haha
Wow that is quite the predicament you’ve got there. I would say use some language learning apps like Duolingo and Memrise (my personal favourite). Remember to use them every day, and that the best way to learn is to spread it evenly not do one massive learning session once a week. A little bit every day goes a long way.
Here is a list of a whole bunch of PDFs of English books in French eg Harry Potter and The Hunger Games series’. If you’ve previously read the books then you’ll be able to focus more on the language learning part rather than the actual plot and getting lost when trying to figure out what’s going on. Here is also a website where you can read and listen to books in French with the English on the other side, so if you get lost then it’s there to help you learn. Write down new words that you find and look them up after you have finished that chapter, that way you focus more on the book and don’t get confused with sentence structure.
Look up French music and when you find a song that you like, go and look at the lyrics and see what you can translate for yourself, then find an actual translation and see how close you were. Write down words that you don’t know/understand/recognise and look them up. Write down new words so you can look back at them later. Do the same with some French YouTubers. Some have English subtitles and are actually there to help you learn french whilst still being like normal English vloggers. I really like Antastesia as she makes videos in English too.
In terms of translating stuff, I find WordReference really helpful. It’s a website and an app where you can look up words in English and French (and other languages). It’s much better than Google Translate, as it gives you possible translations of words, and what they mean. So if you wanted to know what something meant in a specific context then it would give you different options and you choose the one that best fits the situation you need it for. I don’t know anything other than Google Translate for phrases (other than Memrise or Duolingo), so if you have specific phrases then I think Google Translate would be the best, but make sure to double check the words in the sentences with WordReference before you use it as some can be wildly wrong. And, of course, you can just google it and see what comes up.
For help with conjugating verbs, I recently found these two sites (x) (x) to be really useful.
Write down any questions you have about the language and then if you have a teacher or someone who knows French either online or in real life, then ask them.
Practice speaking/writing as much as you can. Find someone to help you with the language and use them as a language buddy. If you can find someone online, even better. You most likely won’t know them so you can use all of the basic small talk that you will use in France.
For learning the words for objects around the house try writing the names on sticky notes and placing it on the object, this way you’ll remember the word when you see the object.
Learn how to ask for tickets/directions/suggestions for places to eat. These are very important if you are new to a place and doesn’t just apply to France. Also, when learning how to ask for things, remember to learn some possible answers to these questions, as when you ask, you probably want to understand their answer, right?
Read articles or things in french out loud to practice pronunciation. Do the same with writing. Say the sentence you want to write in French out loud. Speak each word as you write it down, and when you’ve finished writing it down, say the sentence out loud again.
Mnemonics and puns are your bet friends for remembering certain words. For example, when remembering ou (or) from où (where), I remember it by the phrase where is the graveyard, as the accent on the u is called Accent Grave and où means where.
For a brief rundown of uses of accents and how to pronounce them, I have a post here of my notes from a French class where we did just that.
In terms of writing accents online, French.typeit.org is really good. Basically, it just lets you add accents to letter then you copy and paste it to wherever you need it. Woo.
Learn the grammar rules. I know it’s boring, hard, and confusing, but trust me, once you learn it your life will be a whole lot easier. Speaking of, grammar books are better than phrase books in this sense as with grammar books you can actually learn the structure of sentences and learn how to make them yourself where as with phrase books you’re more spoon fed.
Finally, there’s a whole lot of French blogs with lots of vocab words and grammar posts to look at and learn from. One of my personal favourites is @frenchaise . They were the first blog I came upon when starting out in the French Tumblr community and all of their posts are top notch. Highly recommend you check them out.
There are a ton more resources on the web (as the Kool Kidz™️ say) that you can find but these are just a few that I use. These are just a few tips to hopefully help you survive on your trip. Bonne chance!

Bonjour! I really love your blog (very helpful and resourceful). I recently started studying french, and in reply to one ask you mentioned that it is very important to start practicing pronunciation even at the beginning stages. I wanted to ask you whether you have any phonology/pronunciation resources of french that you would recommend?
Salut ! I am so sorry for this late, late response…. :(
I certainly have some great pronunciation resources for French!!
The Youtube channel French Sounds is brilliant for learning how to physically make a certain sound. I would know – the videos here taught me the French “r” sound and the “eu” sound (as  in “heures”)…très utile !
Another great resources is Forvo; here you can listen to native speakers pronouncing almost every word! I use it all the time :D
This website is a true gem for every French learner. It is indispensable, to take maybe an hour a week to work on pronunciation, especially on here.
These Youtube videos are basically repetition drills; you repeat after the native speaker and it really helps! I especially recommend spending a good amount of time on the middle video and record yourself repeating after the speaker.
Enjoy! :D

French Movies Part 2
Hey guys! Movies helped me a lot to improve my French. I love French movies and French cinema and now I wanna share a few of my favorite movies and must-sees with you! I hope they’ll help you!
Jean de Florette + Manon des Sources (takes place in the 1930s, tragic story about 2 families, that plot twist tho)
Naissance des pieuvres (teen love, a girl falls for another girl)
Jeune & Jolie (nsfw, might be triggering for some people!!, a girl has sex for the first time, it’s very unpleasant and then she starts to sleep with men for money)
Le prénom (choosing the wrong name for your baby might end up like in this movie)
Tomboy (the title says everything! very good film!)
17 filles (17 high school girls decide to get pregnant at the same time)
Nathalie… (a woman wants a prostitute to sleep with her husband because she wants to find out if he’s really able to cheat on her)
La famille Bélier (lots of singing, about a girl and her family - everyone is deaf except for that girl, her dream is to sing but her family isn’t that supportive at first, also involves teen love and a latex allergy)
Respire (2 best friends who don’t stay best friends for the entire film and things escalate)
La cérémonie (lesbian vibes, a woman who doesn’t tell anyone that she cannot read and write gets into trouble, a bit bloody at the end)
L’homme de Rio (old movie, adventure and love in Rio de Janeiro, very cute main actress)
Les demoiselles de Rochefort (movie about 2 sisters, lots of singing and dancing)
Paulette (a racist granny starts to deal with drugs and turns into a nice person, awesome comedy)
L’amour est un crime parfait (a teacher who lives in the mountains with his sister sleeps with one of his students, she dies and he has to get rid of her dead body, he falls in love with the dead girl’s step mom)

Learning French on YouTube
Hey guys, here are some of my favorite channels on youtube for learning French.
Tumblr media
Francais avec Pierre  - great channel if you want to know more about grammar rules and expressions, how to sound really French and natural. He also makes videos about the DELF/DALF exams…
Comme une Française  - also very good if you are confused about certain things… you can learn a lot about used expressions and words you would not find in a book
1 jour, 1 question - the main purpose of this channel is to explain things to kids, but in a fun way. It’s animated and short, but it’s great for obtaining a wide range of vocabulary, because the themes go from politics, geography and history to something like animals and food. Also might be good for learning about some history things, and interesting new facts, not just learning French.
Learn French with FrenchPod101.com  - again… grammar, expressions, vocabulary channel
Cyprien - this is the only channel that is just a normal channel, not meant for learning French (but I am sure everyone knows Cyprien anyway). I just really enjoy his videos and it’s very useful for learning new words and of course for some listening practice.
.
I am sure there are many more channels like these… but I just wanted to write down my favorite ones for you guys

Soulmates are not your ~other half~, that’s just nonsense. You are a whole person already, not half a person. A soulmate isn’t even inherently romantic. A soulmate is just the other sock in a matched set. You’re still a whole, complete sock on your own, you are perfectly functional paired with any other sock, it’s just that it’s even better when you match. A soulmate is literally just the person who makes your soul go “!!! Same hat!!!” and wave excitedly.

save some money because we are all broke students
Are you too completely broke after spending all your money on Urban Outfitters, your Spotify subscription, that new MacBook for the (overpriced) Studyblr Aesthetic ™?
Tumblr media
I recently graduated high school, and now, as a student, I can finally get my account at UNiDAYS. It’s a platform with discounts on basically everything - from the Financial Times to a cute little French Lifestyle Subscription Box I found recently. (Apparently the one for September is focused on weekly planning and stationery!!) It’s helped me to save money immensely - for example with the 50% student Spotify discount. I’ve also planned to get a new tablet soon - both Apple and Microsoft offer discounts as well. All you need to do is register here with your university email. If you’re not in university yet - or already done - please share so other studyblrs can benefit from it!
