Repurposed Denim is so hot right now... #RawDenimMonday with our residence creator @influential_hustle founder of @officialjacm The denim program is an initiative meant to inspired creative ways to work with what we have while preventing textile waste by up-cycling and revamping past seasons’ dead stock inventory. Over 15 million tons of clothing end up in landfills every year. We can do better. Ghanaian author and an artist Ibrahim Mahama’s ambitious space focused installation of repurposed jute sacks (Left) “I am interested in how crisis and failure are absorbed into this material with a strong reference to global transactions and how capitalist structures work.” Mahama’s conceptual approach of using textiles with deep-rooted connections to our history inspired one of the sets for the #trialsofthepastthesiscollection lookbook shoot- (Ps. The repurposed jute bags had coffee grains still in them during the day of the shoot- the sacks will eventually be repurposed once more into throw pillow cases 😉 (swipe) & the Golden Lion recipient Angolan photographer Edson chagas’ (Right) Fernando L. Makélélé, Tipo Passe, 2014 portrait from his ‘Tipo Passe’ series of portraits depicting subjects wearing traditional African masks and contemporary fashion. Both works highlight the artists’ ongoing exploration around topics of identity, migration, globalisation, and economic exchange. Both artists have participated in the International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. - image captured during my visit to the Contemporary African Art fair @154artfair ‘s 2nd NY edition in 2016 (at Pioneer Works) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD1OJaGHpa_/?igshid=f1wgreo4pt4x

Another amazing and powerful editorial I’m proud to have had a piece from my #trialsofthepastcollection be part of. Thank you to the team 🤎 -Budding Liberation- “The theme behind the shoot was inspired by the lack of black people represented in Victorian Era portrait paintings. I love the flare and details given to wardrobes from that time. Unfortunately it’s nearly impossible to find black men and women represented in those depictions other than as slaves. Black women specifically are occupying more white-male dominated work spaces and becoming their own successful entrepreneurs. So I wanted to create an updated view, of the 2020 black woman with the influences of victorian fashion and portraiture” Na’im @350px Photographer: @350px Model: @andreavalle MUA: @virtual.brat Stylist: @ainyne_ (at The Woodlands) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBnyUq1nOxL/?igshid=jrm492ghgwv5

Let’s Try Again. ☝🏽 #Repost @jaejoseph ・・・ Let’s start here...then (SWIPE) Today we celebrate the life of Breonna Taylor. Like George Floyd, she was also killed by the police, but her case remains largely disconnected from the broader narrative. The exclusion of Breonna Taylor’s name is the latest iteration of a longstanding issue: Black women’s experiences of police brutality and their tireless contributions to mass social justice movements have almost always been left out of the picture, receiving far less media or political attention. #SAYHERNAME #BREONNATAYLOR #BIRTHDAYFORBREONNA #BLACKLIVESMATTER Please feel free to share the post with slides. https://www.instagram.com/p/CBFCg1_n8R9/?igshid=wn6pr82jbtvc

#Repost @aurorajames ・・・ @wholefoods @target @shopmedmen @walmart @saks @sephora @netaporter @barnesandnoble @homedepot I am asking you to commit to buying 15% of your products from Black owned businesses. . So many of your businesses are built on Black spending power. So many of your stores are set up in Black communities. So many of your sponsored posts are seen on Black feeds. This is the least you can do for us. We represent 15% of the population and we need to represent 15% of your shelf space. . Whole Foods if you were to sign on to this pledge, it could immediately drive much needed support to Black farmers. Banks will be forced to take them seriously because they will be walking in with major purchase orders from Whole Foods. Investors for the very first time will start actively seeking them out. Small businesses can turn into bigger ones. Real investment will start happening in Black businesses which will subsequently be paid forward into our Black communities. . Dont get me wrong, I understand the complexities of this request. I am a business Woman. I have sold millions of dollars of product over the years at a business I started with $3500 at a flea market. So I am telling you we can get this figured out. This is an opportunity. It is your opportunity to get in the right side of this. . So for all of the ‘what can we do to help?’ questions out there, this is my personal answer. #15PercentPledge . I will get texts that this is crazy. I will get phone calls that this is too direct, too big of an ask, too this, too that. But I don’t think it’s too anything, in fact I think it’s just a start. You want to be an ally? This is what I’m asking for. (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CA-X-MJHB3Y/?igshid=1e69fen6tmntd

2015 flashback to -Five Decades- A retrospective presentation that celebrated the 56th International Biennale di Venezia’ Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement recipient, and one of the most captivating artists in history #ElAnatsui Aside from Anatsui’s immersive wall shapeshifting sculptures made from repurposed bottle tops. The retrospective showcased earlier pieces like the striking woodworks. Embellished with intricate adrinka patterns and bright pops of color. The #Adinkra patterns were a major source of inspiration for the artist during the 80s and 90s eras. Good times❤️ Shot by @angelymartinezjewelry Thank you! Just because we are in isolation mode- doesn’t mean you have to isolate yourself from the world. Make sure you’re taking the time to get out and just walk... Go on explore your neighborhood - pay attention to the little details you often missed when you’re rushing off to work or school. There are so much beauty and history around us. Don’t miss out. Plus sun rays and fresh air are all the rage. Get some.
