The scenes of Monty hanging out in Esther's house always throw me off so much. Like I know he's her pet-turned-boy but when I see him out and about he reads to me as just some guy

But then he's also just chilling out at Esther's kitchen table being a teenager while she's cooking evil revenge mushrooms right over there. Or when he comes down the stairs in his little sweater?? And she gives him the instructions for the final phase of the plan and he's responding like she's handing him his lunch for school?? Like he's just a teenage boy and he's interacting with a woman who feeds little children to the snake in her cupboard like she's his mom. I'm always just like kid get out of there but that's just his house. This is his life. He used to live in the tiny little cage in the corner and seemingly he now has a bedroom upstairs somewhere. He reads astrology books. He read Valley of the Dolls because Edwin recommended it to him. He tried to vent to, again, the witch who stood bleeding on the shore to get immortality from a primordial goddess about his boy troubles. He's such a teenage boy and he's just living in a house with the woman who tore him asunder to shape him like this

It fucks me up so much there's such a tension to this scenes specifically because he is so unexpectedly chill and vulnerable. Like he's just sitting there perched on the windowsill in his little band shirt 5 feet away from the massive snake cabinet. Like Esther is far from a parental figure but he is behaving like he is her teenage son anyway
