no but really, I think it fits him really well! I had thought his UM would probably involve something kinda sleight-of-handy or pickpockety! and I looooved that it made such a nice loop-around back to episode 1. ❤️ I was. kind of half-expecting him to just run out and punch Riddle in the nose again. but instead this time 'twas he who offed the queen's head! it was great! and he did it while stone-cold terrified out of his mind! because Ace is the only remotely normal or well-adjusted person at NRC and therefore the only one who is like "we're going to literally die, this is super effed up". but he did it anyway!!!! I AM SO PROUD

“She’s my best friend’s kid.” Haymitch didn’t look up when Beetee stopped next to him, in a corner of the lobby of the Tribute Center, where all the mentors were, briefly, gathering.

They had discovered a few years ago that this corner was a spot with just enough feedback from the climate control system to mess with any recording devices. There was a way they checked, every year, to make sure it was the same, and he was already certain it would be fine. They never discussed anything sensitive, but chose the spot as their place to exchange limited pleasantries in low tones, reassured slightly by the tiny bit of privacy.

“I thought you didn’t have any friends.” Beetee’s reply wasn’t cold-hearted, it was a fact Haymitch had thrown at him year after year.

“I don’t. I pushed him away. Barely knew him by the time he died.”

“But…”

Haymitch should hate the way the older man could bait him into explaining himself. But he doesn’t have the energy. “But that’s still his kid, okay? And I like her, in spite of myself.”

“You’ve never been one to get attached to the tributes.” Again, a fact. Nothing rude meant by it.

“Things change.” He took a sip of his drink, just for something to do. “She reminds me of me. Just luckier, perhaps.”

“Oh?” Beetee’s face flashed for a second, and in that moment Haymitch knew Plutarch had shared the details of their conversation in 11 decades ago with Beetee.

Good.

“If she dies, I’m done.” Haymitch let the words hang in the air for a beat, knowing Beetee would understand him, exactly had he had with his previous statement.

“Haymitch, no.” Beetee’s response was firm, but sympathetic. And was not a real attempt to change his mind.

“He’ll see what it does to me, if she dies. And then the other girl will be back on the block a year from now.” Haymitch knew this conversation was pushing it in length, and he was already looking across the room to find someone else to greet next. “It’s for the best.”

“And if she wins?” Beetee asked, allowing the slightest hint of excitement to break through.

“Then I’m in.” Haymitch crossed the room and greeted Chaff with a hug, not turning back to look a Beetee.

If he had, he would have seen the small smile.

“What do ya’ want?”

It was a growl, raspy around the edge. He bares his teeth, posture hunched as if he was ready to pounce. Solomon blinks at him, taking a step forward. 

“What do you mean?” His mouth pursed, calm voice light and airy.

The air in the Avatar of Greed’s lungs seemed to be screaming for release, chest heaving up and down.

“What are you doing here?” Mammon barked back, fingers clenching around nothing. His nails pierce into the palms of his hands, crescent-shaped marks left on them.

The sorcerer smiles, folding his hands gently in front of him.

“Visiting my apprentice, what else?”

“Stop it.” Mammon takes in a deep breath, irises flashing gold as his jaw clenches. Sweaty palms rub up and down his thighs, sweat trickling into the indent of his palm.

It hurts. 

He grits his jaw harder.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Quick movement as he tries to sidestep the demon, aiming to reach the door’s front to ring the doorbell. “Doing your job as a guard dog, aren’t you?”

“Did your owner praise you today?”

The demon refuses to move, stationing himself starkly in front of the door. The sorcerer’s breath ghosts against his neck and the cool inhale of his breath strengthens his resolve.

He can’t let this wicked man pass him.

“You—“

“Solomon?” 

He recognises that voice. 

At once, all tension leaves his body yet he still stands there warily, hackles up. You open the door, peering confusedly at the scene in front of you.

“Mams?” He jolts back like his leash has been pulled. He can’t let you see him in this state. Forcing a smile, he hides his hands behind his back. “What are you doing?”

“My apprentice!” In a blink, the sorcerer sidesteps him with his arms up high. Momentarily, he half-turns, leaning down in a pretense to pat Mammon on the back.

“Good boy.” He whispers, a smug smirk on his face that the demon was itching to smack off.

Mammon unclenches his fist.

I don't care what anyone says about movie Robotnik, cause you know what? That guy lived his entire life in spite because he believed everyone in the world hated him and there couldn't possibly be anyone who could care for him in any way, and so the second he realised that spite was no longer justified because there was in fact someone (Stone) who loved and cared about him, his response was "fuck, guess I gotta kill myself now" and then sacrifice his life with one final message filled with gay undertones to the person who loved him. That's iconic as fuck.
