Thinking about how much the front half of Dungeon Meshi gives such a very different impression of Kabru as a character than the back half. Like we joke about how he's watching Laios and Toshiro slap-fight with popcorn having a great time, and he is and it's true, but then my man focuses up REAL fucking fast the instant Canaries have boots on the ground and then it's Serious Fucking Business Kabru for the rest of the manga.

Like it's all fun and games when he's focused on trying to figure out what's going on with the Touden party. Like he's still trying to defeat the dungeon for his overall goals but his party's focus on catching "the thieves" is just more or less a distraction. A little side quest to work out a little interpersonal mystery he's been trying to figure out. He's having a fun little time putting together the pieces that didn't make any sense before.

Then the Canaries actually landing on Melini is for Kabru like the scene in Mulan where they walk into the ruined village and it abruptly stops being a musical for the whole rest of the film.

Playtime is fucking over! Kabru is the one guy who fully understands how much playtime is over the instant Canaries are involved. Shit is about to get real bad real fast. There is NO MORE TIME for goofing around. He's playing panicked defense for the entire rest of the manga.

(Side note speaking of panicked defense, it's interesting how much the scene of the illusory fish men followed by the sea serpent really establishes how Kabru reacts under pressure. He's got his shit so together during the illusions and fighting the corpse retrievers but the minute he's out of his element with the sea serpent he panics and can't give good orders, and would have gotten his whole party killed again if not for Toshiro's party.

You can see how this same dynamic plays out when his initial plan to convince the shadow lord backfires and Kabru panics and can't recover, and again when his plan to have Laios become the dungeon lord apparently backfires and he panics and has a full on breakdown. The particular nature of his trauma is such that when he loses control of a situation and something he didn't predict happens, he can't keep his head in the game, and the fact that Kui sets that up so early with the sea serpent is -chef's kiss- so good. It's a fascinating contrast with Laios, who really has a strength for thinking on his feet that enables him to succeed where Kabru's foresight and planning cannot.)

I keep seeing fanarts of ppl's OC's being on the ship, so do you think that if there was 6st crewmember (specifically, another woman) Anya would've been more safe? Like, someone to actually call Jimmy's begaviour out, someone Anya might wanna trust? Is there a possibility something might have changed (even if a little) or it would not have mattered at all?

I feel like the game would make it part of the commentary on where she would believe and help Anya but still be sort of dismissive? Like the whole “don’t waste time crying and being scared keep going and move on, don’t let him win”. It’s supposed to be positive and reinforcing but sometimes it does more damage in those times of mourning and grief, it feels patronizing, like you don’t understand what you’re going through but they do. Even if they did call out his behavior it’s still on Curly to act and while another voice would help, it’s still 4 against 2 on guys that don’t get it until they have to vs women who always have to.

I don’t mind mouthwashing OCs but I do get a bit bored as they tend to be borderline saviors or like Jimmy aligned. They are either more complicit than Curly or just Jimmy haters for no reason, outside of what the creators know about what he did to Anya. I am never irked by OCs but in a story like mouthwashing you really need to think about what your character adds to the commentary, especially if they are there during the crash. It’s nice to have like characters on Anya’s side more whole heartedly and interesting to see characters who placate Jimmy but sometimes it’s one note.

I can’t and don’t want to police peoples OCs it’s never my intention when I comment on trends I notice, but I do feel like the way people make their OCs interact with these two characters and especially Curly, really show a grave misunderstanding of the narrative and these characters as people vs roles in the story. Still, I know people just make up characters for fun and that’s fine. Great even, but I guys I’m focusing more on OCs that are supposed to have those serious dynamics. My favs tend to be pretty-Tulpar or post-Tulpar au OCs.

The inevitably of the crash is on Jimmy. He did that not because he wasn’t stopped but because all his means to kill Anya were taken. The gun, the axe. Even if Curly did strip him of his co-pilot privileges and try to keep him contained there’s only so many people. An extra body helps but they have jobs they have to do, he’s the only one steering the whole ship and Jimmy would likely have an out: food, bathroom, etc. He’s not new and if he couldn’t crash the ship directly, who’s to say he wouldn’t sabotage something else? A clunker like the Tulpar wouldn’t take much. An extra person helps but it’s just another thing that prolongs what a person like Jimmy is willing to do to shirk responsibility.

It’s more than just needing someone to stand up to him and think that’s what is missing when it comes to inserting a character into the mouthwashing setting.

hold on wait. wait. regime change between when show!armand leaves delhi, and when he's turned into a vampire. god. i'm thinking about his speech to madeleine, his "what will you do when there is nothing left of your era?". if he tried to visit the village he came from during his time with marius, he will likely have witnessed exactly that. within his mortal life. armand believes he is uniquely suited to endure immortal life, to adapt and survive no matter what. he might have seen the fall of the lodi dynasty while he was in his 20s; maybe that's why. but god. how devastating. his village might even have been destroyed in the fall of the lodi dynasty. what do you do if you are taken from your home and when you finally have the freedom and strength to return to it, it is unrecognisable to you. fuck.

yakuza 6. first and foremost, it didnt count the continues but i only died once. you know how on the way to that one boss fight we had to jump across platforms because there was the sea bellow? yea i walked off a platform cuz i wanted to see what would happen. i died is what happened.

THE KIDS AT THE ORPHANAGE NEVER SAW HIM AGAIN-

i usually add pictures of the stuff and scenes i talk about but i was too busy whipping tears off my face during the last chapter and i dont really feel like watching the cutscenes back any time soon cuz i dont wanna cry again, also sorry if i ramble more than usual

i thought the whole "kiryu is daigos mom" thing was just the fandom talking about them endearingly since to me they saw each other as brothers and unofficial kyodai, but that letter broke me. i think the only other times ive cried that hard during one of these games was probably when kiryu got stabbed in kiwami 2, and in 0 with nishiki and majima and then in kiwami with the majima saga and nishikis death (talking about nishikis death- was that ghost of him at new serena really necessary they had to render a whole ass shot of his corpse for that and all for what just to break my heart all over again?? monsters)

and this game hurts for so many reasons all at once that i dont even know how to talk about it?? kiryus such a tragic character and watching him grow older and throw everything away lose everything is a special type of hurt. his stubbornness and self sacrificing nature and belief that he doesnt deserve anything or worse that he ruins everything he touches DO YOU SEE WHY I CANT FIND HOW TO TALK ABOUT HIM-

haruka being just like him also hurts my soul, she had no reason to leave morning glory the same way kiryu had no real reason to fake his own death at the end but they still did. they care so much about the people in their lives that they would rather make themselves suffer than feel like an "inconvenience", even when the people theyre supposedly inconveniencing are screaming in their faces that they love them and would gladly help carry the weight of whatever their carrying ten times over

and yea kiryu DIDNT have any good reason to leave. thats still something that bothers me or maybe i missed something since, again, i was bawling my eyes out. hes not the only one who revealed the secret, nagumo and the others were right there with him hell he wasnt even the one to get the boat out of the water so why was he the only one threatened??? why did he suggest faking his own death (aside from a weak attempt to hold himself accountable for... existing)? like i get because of his influence they would want to make sure that him specifically keeps his mouth shut but????????

a part of me kind of feels like if Date wasnt such a push over and didnt have kiryu on a pedestal he mightve had a shot at talking him down from a lot of things through the games. he couldve put his foot down and threatened to tell everyone the truth or to arrest him or at the VERY least refuse to play along, he couldve punched some sense into him he couldve done anything else instead of just indulging him through the years

then again... kiryu is a man. let me kind of elaborate on that cuz im not sure what i mean myself. kiryu IS masculinity, hes everything any man with a good head on his shoulders should look up to (hell its affected me in my daily life too, in a positive way) but hes also very much the macho ideal in some ways, which is to say, you shouldnt actually want to BE like him. his stubbornness is part of that, not listening to reason because "he knows best" and refusing help left and right when he needs it the most (i still stand on that if he'd let Majima come down to okinawa with him the orphanage wouldnt have gotten destroyed and Rikiya probably wouldnt have died)

im assuming kiryu found out kiyomi wasnt really dead later on but that fight mustve fuked him up pretty bad and solidified it in his head that "he ruins everything" and doesnt deserve a chance at a normal life since sooner or later the tojo always come knocking at his door

i find him really relatable in these later games bc of a phew things honestly, and thats kind of helped me figure out some shit about myself. kiryu is someone who lives for the people in his life. him and majima are driven by love and loyalty, almost to their own undoing. their mental state and principles are so crucial to the games as a whole that i sometimes forget how dense the "crime drama" parts of the games actually are and how theyre supposed to be the main thing (as i saw someone mention here recently about yakuza 3: "someone put obligatory fighting in my dad simulator 3000")

this was more rambly and incoherent than usual, i really dont know how to go about talking about this game. I think playthrough-wise i had more fun with yakuza 5 but kiryus story kind of "ends" in this one. i know theres the kiryu gaiden and then infinite wealth but you get what i mean, this chapter of his life is over and hes never getting it back. i dont play a lot of games but the ones i have always seem to have a mostly "happy ending" so how yakuza 6 made me feel was definitely a welcomed first. kiryus such an amazing character and im real grateful to the studio for treating him and the franchise with respect honestly (although i have my own personal qualms about how the games have shifted over the years but its not things that "ruin" them for me by far so eh)

im excited to finally get to ichiban though, i knew i was gonna love him and so far yea i was right. ill most likely make a post about him when ive played a phew more hours. the silly.

I think peri should just quit godparenting entirely, he's terrible at his job, he's hurt too easily, he gets cocky after getting dev back but hes not worried abt Dev's being at all, downright leaving dev on his own without considering who will take care of him, stalking him but didn't do anything, making things worse with his godkid by interrupting him at his worst state when he should've ask dev if he needs space to think abt the whole situation (and gets upset when asked to leave???WHAT WERE YOU THINKING), that one ep where he says "Well, that should keep him busy for a while", LIKE HUH??? was that necessary??? he then never made an attempt to apologize or comfort him, he doesn't even know what he's doing for most parts nd have literally admitted it on that one ep, he's too independent and acts like he doesn't, he ran from his responsibilites or when there's conflicts, he's overwhelmed wayy too easily, he lashes out at his godkid (which mind you, he shouldnt do that cuz Dev's a child, doesnt matter how shitty he is), and he never considers Dev's own feelings even when it's his job to make the kid unmiserable... All he's ever known for outside of his job is being a smartass and his attractiveness which you can obviously tell wouldn't be fitting for a godparent, so overall he deserves to quit nd live with his parents

I first knew him from metropolis too! (re)watching it with a friend who had more tezuka knowledge than me was my gateway lol. he actually started out as a pretty standard hero character but he's best known for his villain roles, which is no question where he shines the most. I think he's at his most entertaining and interesting in vampires, but I've also seen him in black jack, say hello to bookila, phoenix, and the 2003 astro boy anime. and other random places, he shows up a lot.

people doing this whole "look at how rhaenys acted with corlys's bastard son vs how catelyn acted with jon snow" to demonize one or the other is weird because, like, maybe it's just me, but i think that catelyn and rhaenys had different reactions because they're different people in different situations.
