Hey, how was your day? Tired from work? Annoying boss? Come to reso- music! We'll heal you with music.
We gonna share some classic folk songs with you today. Folk music has always had a unique way of connecting with people, and they often feature slow, simple, repetitive melodies that allow the lyrics to take center stage and convey a message.
🎵
Can't get enough of 《Five Hundred Miles》.
Melodic, natural and fresh. Life is hard, and you're not 500 miles from home. If you listen to it when you are lost and confused, your mood will be calmed down...
If you miss that train I'm on, it's the one I've left alone and in dismay; listen to the whistle that stretches for a hundred miles, a hundred miles, and a hundred miles ......
🎵
《Take Me Home, Country Roads 》 is a 1971 song written by American folk singer John Denver with Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert.
The inspiration for the song came from Bill Danoff, a musician friend of John Denver's, and his wife, Taffy Nivert, who told him that he was accompanying Nivert on a trip to join her family in Maryland; on the way there, he remembered a tune that would be suitable for a folk ballad.
After hearing the demo tune, John Denver was intrigued enough to talk to Danoff and Nivert about revising it for his next album, Poems, Prayers and Promises.
Every time we hear this song, it always evokes strong feelings of homesickness. country roads, take me home, to the place I belong... No matter how unsatisfactory life is, as long as the home is still there, our souls and bodies will have a place to return to.
🎵
...How to appease the lonely soul on a long night? In the face of the darkness of silence, natural contemplation is the greatest solace, the stars in the hazy moonlight, full of dewdrops of flowers, have given us the freedom of tolerance, soaring thoughts, so that loneliness has become a kind of enjoyment in the journey of life.
Accompanied by the melody of the bass, loneliness becomes a rare luxury. In loneliness you hear the sound of gurgling spring water? In loneliness do you see the round dance song gliding through the grass on a summer night? “Hello, darkness, my old friend, I've come to talk to you again.” ...... Let's use the key of 《The Sounds of Silence》 to open the door of loneliness in our hearts, and in loneliness, experience the depth and breadth of life, and welcome the bright dawn of your own.
As the theme song to the Academy Award-winning film 《The Graduate》 and one of the most iconic pieces of music of all time, this song has touched the hearts of millions of people around the world, spanning more than half a century, and has been sung for a long time.
🎵
Every time I hear this song 《Valder Fields》 by Toams Wells,
It's like sitting alone in the soft grass.
The warm afternoon sunlight is spreading gently on you.
White clouds roaming in the blue sky
The breeze smells of earth
and caresses your face.
In front of you are mountains and lakes.
Cows and goats are grazing.
It's peaceful and quiet.
The upbeat yet serene rhythms and gentle yet moving lyrics quiet every restless soul.
🎵
This is a Scandinavian ballad about a two-way crush called 《Say Hello》, sung by Roise Thomas and Sufjan Stevens.
The whole song is sweet and youthful, perfectly illustrating the nervousness, hesitation and anticipation of a crush.
If you meet someone you like, look them in the eye and say hello.
🎵
《Happy (I Used To Be)》,sung by the Norwegian singer-songwriter Egil Olsen, unique Nordic temperament, warm and continuous voice, slowly flowing with the sadness of the lazy mood, with minimalist and moving songs known as one of Norway's best live performers!
This song is a slow way to grieve, perfect for a quiet night or drunk moments to enjoy.
————
Listen to reso-music! Listen to how folk songs make the world feel right. Joy, sadness, frustration, secret love, homesickness, friendship, etc., there is always a feeling that can RESOnate with you.

ok, so, a super late reaction
i know you thought i'm mad at din, but i'm not (? 🤔 really?). i'm just miserable on how the thing goes, and need a moment to digest
sorry to say that i'm very disagree with your note about the emotional punch not achieved...... imo this is well-executed, i'm so glad that you adopted a lot of din's POV. compare to the 1st breakup (yea that still made me a bit upset, and this is the 2nd time dude, though pretty bird miraculously recovered in no time then, how can she trust you anymore???), i can fully feel his struggles, can see that he tried his best; since you have wonderfully illustrated his reluctance and longing. on the logical side, i understand this will be an obvious option for din who with protective nature, just like what he did to grogu in season 2 of the show
HOWEVER, i'm still voting for pretty bird to get a new gorgeous marcus something who is a pro hockey player (credit: @whirlwindrider29), she deserves that!!! and our plan got concurred by @heartbrokenlilbitch-nef (🤝🏻)! tin can can certainly go through some torture right?
Hi babe!! First, thank you so much for reading and for caring about their story! I so appreciate your kind words on the writing 😭😭 I'm very glad that there was some emotional panache in the last chapter and that Din's POV felt true to his show character and showcased his struggle. I will try to show more of that in the next chapters!
Now... feel free to be as mad at Din as you want 😂😂😊 To quote that TikToker "He's just a man! Hit him with your car!" 😂 He really is just a man and he is making decisions for Pretty Bird and keeping things from her and though his intentions are pure, this is a big no-no and she will not be standing for this type of behaviour ever again, don't you worry. I know it may seem like she recovered and forgave him very quickly after the last breakup, but we have to remember that even though it was 7/8 chapters for us, for them it was just 2 weeks of dating/getting to know each other. Sure, they had a really strong connection, but it was only 3 (very good) dates and while she had been sad and confused, it was really over the loss of potential.
This time is very different - this has been a deep and meaningful relationship that's spanned (if I count it out properly) about a year. The feelings of loss and hurt run very deep here, which is why these next two chapters are about Getting Over Someone - it will take a while. And even then, it isn't even until the final chapter that we get to Forgiveness. 🤔🤷🏻♀️
As for Hockey Player Marcus (or rather "Markus" as surely he would be Scandinavian 😂), he seems like a good guy and I don't know if I would want to set him up just to be a torture device for Din 😂😂 As it is, you can rest assured that Din will be tortured enough 😅😅 However, since you've expressed such an interest in Pretty Bird dating again, you've helped me make an important decision on where to end this next chapter; I've been writing these next two chapters together and have been debating whether or not to include a certain scene in part 1 or part 2, and now I think I'll include it at the end of part 1 😈😈
Thank you again as always for reading and for being invested in the story! I hope I can take it somewhere you enjoy 💕💕😘

Christmas Carol-Cember Day 11
I'm gonna step outside my comfort zone for this one. Alright, here goes.
Let’s talk about the My Little Pony Version of a Christmas Carol.
Huh, didn't vomit in my mouth as much as I thought.
Full disclosure, I completely avoided “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” when it was on the air back in the day. I, like many other adult men, looked at this show’s popularity and was stunned with how it had a large fandom amongst older male fans than it did young female fans. That feeling of fragile masculinity kept me from really giving it a chance as I focused on other things that appealed to me, like anime or Doctor Who.
Now with a older mindset willing to challenge these gender conventions, plus a friend who became an open fan and was forced to watch a show he did not enjoy due to losing an Oscar betting pool with me, I checked out a few episodes to ease his suffering.
To my surprise? It wasn’t as horrid as I was expecting nor was it that feminine as I was lead to believe.
A major part in that was thanks to it's show runner Lauren Faust, animator on films like “Cats Don’t Dance” and “The Iron Giant” and animation director for 2000s cartoons like “The Powerpuff Girls” and “Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends.” According to the Netflix series “The Toys That Made Us” that focused on the My Little Pony franchise, Lauren grew up with the pony dolls like countless others girls who grew up in the 80s, but for her and her friends, what meant the world to them were the stories and adventures that she and her friends made up using the dolls as well as the quirky personalities that they made up for each pony doll. Taking that ethos to heart, Faust went into “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” with the mantra that the story and characters would be central and the product would be secondary.
Her intuition proved correct. “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” was a smash hit upon release that spanned nine seasons, an equally successful spin-off series, a theatrical movie and saw Hasbro’s profits skyrocket. Additionally, the show caught on with men just as much as it did for girls, legitimizing the show runners to write the show with a more accepting approach as they became aware of the fans watching. Presumably that is how we got this episode, “A Hearth’s Warming Tail” during its sixth season.
I wasn’t planning on checking it out, but when @clarktooncrossing brought it up in conversations, he mentioned a small detail that made me tilt my head and ask a question:
“How do you tell a Christmas Carol when the fantasy world doesn’t have Christmas?"
In the fantasy world of Ponyville, all the little horses love the holiday “Hearth’s Warming” and look forward to the sharing of gifts, candy and season tidings…and scaring away yetis or something? I dunno, I’m going by wikipedia to confirm this.
Well all but this one horse with a name that sounds like she took it from a disco album, Starlight Glimmer (played by Kelly Sheridan). She finds the whole thing silly and intends to skip it, but the pony possibly named after an Electrical Light Orchestra album, Twilight Sparkle (Tara Strong) won’t have it so she sits her down and proceeds to read a book about a mini horse with the same hairstyle and voice actor named Snowfall Frost, a name that sounds like a Scandinavian metal band, preparing to cast a Level 9 ritual spell to erase the holiday forever.
But lo and behold, three ghosts of Hearth’s Warming past (voiced by Ashleigh Ball), present (voiced by Andrea Libman) and future (voiced by Tabitha St Germain) show up to get her to change her mind before the ritual reaches it’s casting time requirement.
Complete with music numbers. Get yours today for $29.99 plus shipping and handling.
So having to rely entirely on Wikipedia to tell me who is who as well as the small handful of episodes I have seen, I can name one problem that might be problematic for anyone coming into this blind: the characters and their stories require context.
Unless you were watching this show from the first episode, you would probably be confused as to who was who and what their personalities are and what is their relationship to one another.
I point this out because at one point early in the episode, a dragon character acknowledges a previous transgression Starlight Glimmer committed. I had no idea whether that was true or some easter egg I didn’t get since I never watched those episodes that involved this character. Then again, anyone would run into this problem if you are watching a narrative-driven show. It’d be like watching “Avatar the Last Airbender” and you start with the season 3 episode “The Western Air Temple.” You would, understandably, be very lost in why these characters are in hiding, why they don’t trust the angsty guy with the eye scar and who this big dude who shoots explosions out his forehead is.
But that’s literally the only negative I have to say about this adaptation.
Once you get past that context hurdle, the story follows along the Charles Dickens novel enough that you understand the character beats and motivations easily enough. Granted all the Dickens-era characters are played by characters from the show, but it’s not necessary to know who they are to understand the story.
It also doesn’t hurt that the vocal performances are fantastic.
Kelly Sheridan really gives the Scrooge character here a dominant and icy personality that the character calls for and she pulls that off swimmingly, as is her change of heart as it becomes clear her hatred for the holiday is derived from her past traumas and a reassessment of her belief system for what bettering the world looks like.
Ashleigh Ball’s Ghost of the Past is clearly leaning into Bette Midler for influence, especially with the Southern twang she puts into the words she has to sing. She’s also the only established cast member in this who provides both the speaking and singing voice.
Shannon Chan-Kent really leans into the jazz influence all while keeping the high energy that comes with the character for the Ghost of the Present. Andrea Libman, to her credit, sticks the landing with a character I would prefer to get off a bus to get away from. If you could deliver these lines while talking fast, acting hyper and NOT trip over them, you deserve your roses.
Tabitha St Germain, a woman whose IMDB is like going through a real “holy sh*t, that was HER?!” of voiceover roles does not perform the singing voice for the Ghost of the Future, but credit to Aloma Steele for doing a pretty spot-on job sounding close all while performing in this operatic dirge regarding the visions of the future where everyone died.
Lyrically, the songs vary from being too smaltzy and direct but serviceable to being genuinely poetic. More on that later.
As for the animation; even for a show that was aimed for young children, it’s quite colorful but not overbearingly so. A problem I have with a lot of media that’s aimed for kids is the colors can be too bright, to the point of clashing with each other or causing eye strain. Even when there’s a lot happening on screen as the scene changes from different location, the animation team knows where to draw your eye without filling the screen with too much at once and allowing the backgrounds to match the tone intended. Whether it’s soft and minimal as seen in the visions of the past, vibrant and colorful for the sequence set in the present or dark and gloomy for the visions of the future.
The story itself, while doing enough to keep the themes of Dickens intact, can be summarized with “don’t be a humbug for the holidays and enjoy spending time with people, even if you don’t get the holiday.” Which is a nice message for kids, but as an adult? Might come off as disingenuous, but then again, I’ve worked retail during the Christmas season for years, if that doesn’t make you jaded, I can’t imagine what else would.
Honestly, I was ready to write this episode off as nothing special until this one moment came up that made me stop and think when I reflected on it.
During a trip to the past, a vision of a young Snowfall decorating her classroom is interrupted by a curmudgeon professor called Flintheart, William Samples, who harshly puts her down for these “childish fantasies” that is getting in the way of her magical studies and declares that if she’s serious about becoming a powerful magic user, she needs to focus on her studies or “play with her toys and make nothing of herself.”
What really made me pause was the lyrical line “feeling helpless, can’t make it hurt less, so you go and change your point of view.”
Children are more receptive than I think we recognize. The beliefs and opinions they exposit are formed from their environment that shape them to become the adults today. So when adults impart harsh lessons or speak carelessly down to them, they stick and can shape them to become our own mistakes.
Whether it’s telling them celebrating the holidays makes them lazy and worthless or making them believe they’re superior to the opposite gender, race or religious creed, we need to mind what we tell them lest they grow up so jaded they don’t care how the future is shaped. They’re willing to let the world burn up and leave nothing behind for future generations to enjoy.
Can’t believe that, of all things to make me consider this deep insight, it was My Little Pony.
This Christmas Carol challenge is bringing out the weird in me.
If you’re a parent with kids or a fan of animation, take a chance with this. The colors are pleasing to the eye, the vocal performances are surprisingly good and even when Christmas is never mentioned, it still retains the holiday spirit that we associate with December while giving a pretty decent message of unity.
But if you don’t want the stink of Hasbro to plague your algorithm, just stick with the Mickey Mouse version.
“A Hearth’s Warming Tail” is available to stream on Plex or you can find the whole episode on YouTube.
Next time, we look at another TV musical where the music was created by a Disney Legend and the woman who wrote The Preamble Song for "Schoolhouse Rock."

What Is Designer Furniture?
Designer furniture refers to high-end, well-crafted pieces created by skilled designers or renowned design houses. It’s not just about luxury pricing; it’s about the marriage of form and function, innovative use of materials, sustainability, and design integrity.
Unlike generic furniture, these pieces are carefully curated and often limited in production—each one telling a story through lines, materials, and design philosophy. Think sculptural chairs, minimalist tables, ergonomic lounge seating, and architectural lighting elements that don’t just fill a room—they define it.
Why Invest in Designer Furniture?
Investing in designer furniture offers a host of benefits beyond aesthetics:
Unmatched quality and durability
Sustainable and ethically sourced materials
Timeless appeal that doesn’t go out of style
Ergonomic comfort built into the design
Higher resale value and collectability
Statement-making impact in any setting

1. Define Your Aesthetic First
Are you into minimalism, industrial design, or contemporary glam? Choose your designer pieces to align with your broader vision.
2. Mix Statement Pieces with Basics
Anchor your room with a bold designer sofa or chair, then balance it with neutral, complementary pieces.
3. Use Lighting Strategically
Pair furniture from 101 Copenhagen or Driade with sculptural lighting to create ambiance and visual depth.
4. Don’t Overcrowd
Designer furniture needs breathing room. Let each piece stand out and speak for itself.
5. Layer in Textures
Incorporate soft furnishings like rugs, throws, and pillows in natural materials to enhance the sensory experience.

Residential Wood and Laminate Flooring Materials Market Trends Reshaping Modern Home Aesthetics Globally

The Residential Wood and Laminate Flooring Materials Market is undergoing a remarkable transformation as consumer demand for stylish, durable, and sustainable flooring solutions reshapes how homes look and feel. From rustic charm to sleek minimalism, the flooring segment has become a central design element in contemporary interiors, driven by evolving materials, advanced manufacturing techniques, and the growing influence of global design trends.
The Rise of Aesthetic Functionality
Traditionally, flooring served a mostly practical purpose—durability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of maintenance. However, today’s homeowners increasingly view floors as a statement of personal style. This shift is driving a surge in demand for wood and laminate flooring options that offer both aesthetic appeal and functional advantages. Textured surfaces, wide planks, and high-definition finishes mimic the natural beauty of hardwood at a fraction of the cost, making high-end aesthetics more accessible.
The popularity of Scandinavian, rustic, and industrial interior themes has contributed to the demand for natural wood grains and neutral tones. Consumers seek cohesive design palettes that create a sense of calm and harmony throughout living spaces. As such, manufacturers are focusing on color variety, grain patterns, and surface textures to cater to these refined tastes.
Sustainability as a Key Trend
Environmental concerns are reshaping the choices consumers make for their homes. The wood and laminate flooring market is responding with sustainable innovations—ranging from responsibly sourced hardwoods to low-emission laminates and recycled wood composites. Certifications like FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and GREENGUARD are becoming key indicators of eco-conscious purchasing decisions.
In addition, laminate flooring options that incorporate recycled core materials and water-based adhesives are gaining popularity. These sustainable practices not only reduce environmental impact but also offer hypoallergenic and toxin-free solutions for households focused on health and wellness.
Technological Enhancements in Flooring Materials
Advancements in flooring technology are playing a critical role in modernizing wood and laminate products. High-pressure laminate (HPL) and engineered wood provide improved moisture resistance, scratch durability, and longer life spans. These enhancements make wood and laminate flooring suitable even in moisture-prone areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
Digital printing technology is another game changer, enabling the creation of intricate, realistic visuals that replicate stone, ceramic, or exotic wood finishes. These options allow homeowners to explore custom looks without the premium costs or maintenance requirements of traditional materials.
DIY Appeal and Easy Installation
With the rise of DIY culture and home improvement media, flooring that is easy to install has become highly desirable. Click-and-lock laminate flooring systems and pre-finished wood planks allow homeowners to take on renovation projects with minimal professional help. This convenience factor has greatly expanded the consumer base for wood and laminate products.
Moreover, the development of underlayment materials that reduce sound transmission and improve comfort is contributing to the appeal of these floors, especially in urban residential settings like condos and apartments.
Regional Trends and Design Preferences
While global trends influence the market at large, regional preferences also play a pivotal role in shaping product development. In North America and parts of Europe, there’s a strong preference for wide-plank oak and walnut finishes, while consumers in Asia and the Middle East often gravitate toward more ornate or high-gloss finishes. Manufacturers are increasingly customizing collections to meet these regional aesthetics, supported by localized marketing strategies and distribution networks.
Emerging markets are also witnessing a surge in demand due to increased urbanization, rising middle-class incomes, and greater exposure to global design through social media and digital platforms. The affordability of laminate flooring makes it especially attractive in regions where budget-conscious consumers are still keen on stylish interiors.
Outlook: The Future of Flooring Aesthetics
As modern homes evolve to serve both functional and expressive needs, the Residential Wood and Laminate Flooring Materials Market is poised to grow in tandem. Continued innovation in sustainable materials, manufacturing technologies, and customizable options will keep wood and laminate flooring relevant and in demand.
Designers and manufacturers are expected to collaborate more closely in the coming years, ensuring that flooring solutions not only meet practical requirements but also serve as foundational elements of modern interior storytelling. The role of digital tools—such as virtual room planners and AR visualization apps—will further empower consumers to personalize their flooring choices.
In summary, the market is no longer just about what lies underfoot—it's about the identity and atmosphere a floor can bring to a space.

Today, we're talking about a company that had potential but due to their stubborness, killed itself in a swift move (but not in a bad way actually), Saab.
Top: Logo of Saab Technologies, the overall parent company of Saab itself
Cars in a Zigzag pattern from left to right: Saab 92 -> Saab 96 -> Saab 900 Turbo -> Saab 9-3 "Viggen" -> Saab 9-2x -> 2011 Saab 9-5.
Saab initially started as an aeronautical company in Sweden in 1937 to build aircrafts for the Swedish military where they built bombers and fighter planes for the Swedish Air Force. Despite Sweden staying neutral throughout WWII, the planes did well protecting the skies of Sweden. By 1947, the company decided to branch off into motor vehicles and in 1947, started a company called "Saab Automobiles" and started to build cars.
Whilst the original Saab AB continued to make aircraft which would soon become jets, the automobile company went on and make cars and their first product was the Saab 92 nicknamed "The Swedish Egg". The car rolled off the factory floor in Trollhatten in 1949 and it sold well with its various forms made till 1980 with the last form being the Saab 96, with the 96 selling the most models at 550,000.
Saab, unlike other companies, prioritizes safety and innovation that unlike other carmakers, they tend to overdesign their cars to be overly safe that made the cars super rigid and safe to drive at high speeds. Plus the weather of Scandinavia are often in the cold winter storms, rollovers and skids happens all the time thus Saab made their cars with extra thick a-pillars to absorb the impact and not crumble making it a real solid machine. With the 96, it became an overnight sensation that rally drivers across Scandinavia would soon realize that the car, despite being underpowered, was stable and tough enough to drive "balls out" in the woods and due to its super tough crumple zones, it doesn't need extra reinforcement as one can buy it off the showroom floor and just race it in the forest and snowy roads without much care and still survive if they crashed. Many Scandinavian rally drivers like Stig Blomquvist would eventually make their name with the Saab 96.
Saab Automobiles would never skimp on ensuring their cars are strong when it comes to safety that they would become the first company to also have safety belts as standard just before Volvo, another Swedish company did it too. By 1968, the 92/96 model has been made for 3 decades with about the same concept and thus, Saab designed a new car with more modern styling and that became the 99 nicknamed "The Toad". What Saab did was to cut the Saab 96 lengthwise and widened it abit. With the success of the Mini Cooper concept of longitudinal FF concept, Saab copied it and made it into a success. What would really shine thru for the 99 was the innovative part of Saab.
Turbocharging technology at that point was a thing only for propeller planes and also for race cars but no one had attempt to slot it into a road-going vehicle as it was all just a fantasy pipedream. However, a shock to everyone, Saab decided to say "screw it. Let's do it with a bang" and slam a turbo into their Saab 99 in 1978 and sell that as the "Saab 99 Turbo" which somehow, in a flash, it became the first car, in the entire world, to be sold with a turbocharger for any road-going vehicle. Saab would follow up the success of the 99 and in turn, produce the 900 in 1979 where it would once again became the best-selling model of Saab's entire line till 1998 where the 900 itself spanned two models with the OB (Old Body) made from 1978-1994 and the NG (New Generation) from 1994-1998.
Saab, despite their success of the 900 series throughout the 80s and 90s, the company was hemorrhaging money from their overengineering efforts and that became a problem as in a technical sense, Saab was only building one model of car. Also, Saab had owned stake with Scania, the biggest truck making company in Sweden from 1969 but by 1995, Saab had liquidated their shares out of Scania causing even more financial troubles by 1998. To remedy the stagnant financial situation, Saab decided to combat the European car maker's outreach by instead of focusing just one model, now they'll make two models, the 9-3 that'll compete with vehicle in its class like the Mercedes C-Class and BMW 3 Series whereas the 9-5 would compete with the Mercedes E-Class and the BMW 5-Series.
What Saab miscalculated was that with their already strained financial situation, suddenly making two vehicles would strain it even more and with Saabs penchant for overengineering even to the slightest bits, building two models was more costly than ever. GM had bailed the company way back in 1989 and owned stakes in it but it was to no avail. In order to bail the company out, GM had dictated that Saab would use 80% of GM parts regardless of where subcompany it came from. However, GM being GM, most of their stuff were trash, including their designs thus Saab just reluctantly agreed to GM's terms but then backtracked and continued building cars their own way with GM's money.
GM didn't understand why and kept pushing but time and time again, Saab just chose the "no u" attitude towards GM and continued doing things their way. Even when Saab did the 9-3, it was supposed to be using the chassis and engine components of the Opel/Vauxhall Vectra but Saab was having none of it and only used 20% of the Vectra's parts bin and instead redid everything on the car themselves and to push the car's sales, Saab even made special editions to the two models like 9-3 Viggen and the same treatment to the 9-5 with the Griffin as both cars were the namesake of the jets that the parent Saab aeronautical department makes.
GM soon caught on to Saab's sheenanigans and watching them losing money into a bottomless pit and with the economic crash of 2008 after the Lehman Brothers fiasco, GM finally pulling the plug from the company and letting them sink by 2010 if they couldn't find a buyer for the Saab Automobile brand. Initial bidders in 2009 included Koeniggsegg (Yes, that Koeniggsegg) and BAIC, a new Chinese car making conglomerate but the deal fell thru after dilly dallying from GM and the Swedish National Debt Office, Keoniggsegg pulled out which cause BAIC to also fail in buying the whole company but in the process, BAIC still managed to nab blueprints from the company in a deal. Regardless, the sale of the company did not go thru.. Till it did and to an even more ridiculous company from the Netherlands, Spyker Cars.
Spyker, like Saab, used to make planes in the early 1900s and bounced back in the mid-00s to make supercars. Who knows why they wanted to buy Saab for but they did eventually get Saab's entire company with the assistance of ex-F1 boss, Bernie Eccelstone being the anchor for the deal between GM and Spyker. However, Spyker bit off more than they could chew as they soon realized why even one of the world's biggest car maker cut ties to the company. Saab's finance sunk deeper and their coffers was dry plus with Spyker being a small company of itself, it can't fill the ever climbing bills of Saab and soon, Spyker also declared bankruptcy.
With that deal also dying after one year, many Chinese companies would attempt to buy Saab out but GM was just reluctant to sell it to the Chinese outright and again after massive gerrymandering in an attempt to fish back their money from the sale of the company but failing to do so, Saab had no choice but to finally, officially declare bankruptcy in 2012.
Saab, a legacy company in Sweden, gone with the wind due to multiple bad deals and due to their own doing. Sad to see the company flaked into the ashes but it is what it is sadly.

To start off this list, why not go with (in my opinion) the greatest opening track of all time. Every time I listen to this track it makes me want to run headfirst into battle. Bolt Thrower released nothing but classic albums and their dedication to excellence has always been a quality that I try to emulate.
King Diamond/Mercyful Fate
youtube
Both of these bands are in my top 5 of heavy metal bands but I have to give a slight edge to King’s solo work since Andy LaRocque is one of my favorite guitarists. The idea of each album having a story and theme has also been immensely influential to my own music, especially for The Wakedead Gathering.
Archgoat — “Grand Luciferian Theophany”
youtube
If you listen to any Invultation material beyond the demo you can hear the Archgoat influence almost immediately. This track, in particular, is the inspiration for the slower riffs that I use fairly frequently in “breakdown” parts. There’s just something about the groove that Archgoat is able to achieve in their slower riffs that is so catchy and dark sounding.
Incantation — “Upon The Throne of Apocalypse”
youtube
One of the first death metal bands that I ever got into; this album is perfection of the OSDM sound. The rough mix enhances the atmosphere of these tracks. I throw on this record pretty regularly for inspiration and just to headbang like a lunatic.
Gravesend — Methods Of Human Disposal
youtube
These guys kind of came out of nowhere a few years ago and after hearing their demo I was immediately hooked. I don’t know of any other band right now that crushes as hard as Gravesend. Getting to see them live was one of the highlights of my year in 2022.
Dark Angel — “Time Does Not Heal”
youtube
I know that this album isn’t usually the favorite for fans of Dark Angel, but I absolutely love it. Famous for containing 246 riffs, but not a single one of them sounds like filler or seems unnecessary. Also, lyrically, they really put a lot of thought and emotion into each track. When I can’t think of an album to put on and I want something fast I always end up going back to this one.
Vader — “De Profundis”
youtube
Another of my first tastes of death metal was Vader. This album comes raging right out of the gate with, “Silent Empire.” The part that starts at 2:40 goes so fucking hard. It’s impossible not to thrash around like a maniac when it hits.
Kohti Tuhoa
youtube
I also have a background in punk music and I love hardcore and d-beat, especially from the Scandinavian scenes. Kohti Tuhoa keep churning out catchy, aggressive albums that I can’t get enough of. Helena’s vocals sound so pissed off, but she also has such a great range. I highly recommend anything they’ve done.
Savage Necromancy — “Feathers Fall to Flames”
youtube
Another modern black/death band that appears heavily influenced by Archgoat. The opening track to this album sets the tone for the rest of what’s to come (sensing a trend here?). An insanely strong vocal performance and crushing production. One of my favorite albums to come out in the last few years.
Occultation — “Silence In The Ancestral House”
youtube
Fall has officially begun, and I can’t think of another album that so perfectly captures the feeling of the season. It’s a shame this band broke up after only two albums, but at least we were left with this amazing album. The track I highlighted here, “All Hallow’s Fire,” is the ultimate Halloween song to me.

This also shapes my common background to the four nations of the Avatar: The Last Airbender setting
The entire span of the cultures in question is ten thousand years. Over that time they've changed immensely, and past the broad linkage of specific types of magic their geographical boundaries haven't exactly been consistent either.
The Fire Nation began as Nahua-speaking Sun Warriors who worshiped the Sun Aztec style and the idea of grain Xipe Totec style (if you know, you know). They expanded to twenty-nine islands where in a nod to real life the new settlers ended up absorbed by a Yamato, a Rykuyku culture that's the Okinawa to Caldera's Japan, and the Mongolian horse nomadic southern islands. There is also a fourth culture, the Thai, who are both the Zoidberg and the Belarus of the bunch in that everyone keeps forgetting they exist....and this happens to be Mai's culture. With the 'nobody remembers we exist' factor 100% connected to part of why the elite from this culture can be such boorish asses.
The Air Nomads are Bodha/Tibetans, with the settled populations in the Temples co-existing with and taking journeys with fully nomadic populations. And as with the Bodha/Tibetans of real life in the past the Air Nomads are hippie pacifists now but were warlike and swaggering imperialists of their own in the early days, ruling a vast swathe of the northern Earth Kingdom as it is now.
The Earth Kingdom is magic China, complete with uneasy relationships with the southern Fire Nation, which at times has neatly ruled entire portions of the Earth Kingdom as Khaganates and Khanates, and an overall ethnic pattern loosely patterned on Chinese ethnicities, a Mandarin-based northern culture, a loosely Guandongese southern, with Gaoling Vietnam, and the Foggy Swamp Tribe the Hmong/Mon/Burmese and linguistic cousins of Mai's people!
Like China it oscillates between garguantuan Rome-style centralized empires and warring states eras, but never loses sight of cultural unity amidst division, helped by the founding fathers of dynasties adopting a very Genghis Khan style 'kill them all for Tengri will know his own' approach to people who object to the centralizing bit. It is the largest single state in this world, but like the Fire Nation it is also an imperialistic multi-ethnic society, and both have major strains from these roots and how they do and don't accept them.
The Water Tribes are Inuit and Hmong, with a political history that includes periods of successful maritime imperialism when they've been strong enough to do it, but that usually required their neighbors to be weaker, in particular the insular and for obvious reasons highly navally-oriented Fire Nation. The Northern Tribe shares with the Fire Nation the only noticeable Indo-European influence (Vajrayana Buddhism is not what most people think of as Buddhism and there are reasons why some of it will be deliberately downplayed as long as Aang is twelve) and in its case, a Scandinavian/heathen influence with its warrior ethos mirroring aspects of Vikings. Hence why most of the imperialism from the Water Tribes is from the North in its more Viking phases.
Each of these cultures has a complex blend of influences from real life cultures but taken to a hard stop and then stopping there very directly for a reason. Not least to avoid insulting real life traditions that exist far beyond a world influenced by a children's cartoon. The various religions and pantheon structures I create owe inspiration to aspects of real life but are not intended to be full mirrors because I see that, up to a point, as risking multi-tiered unintended insults.
Beyond all else, the big differences are that the world is relatively smaller, with continents only in one hemisphere and the rest is a Panthalassa Ocean full of quite literal monsters, some of them Kaiju-scale spirits. And that the spirit world beyond 'just' the Avatar is tangible and empirically provable, meaning that the supernatural is not a philosophical concept, it's a real one that can and will kill as impartially as anything else in real life would.

Some additional points about that grave find in Finland that you may or may not find interesting. And that may or may not be dated, because I studied history 20 years ago. That said, I'm not sure if 1000 years ago is firmly middle-ages in this context? At least back in my uni days, they told us that here middle ages got going slowly during 1100's and 1200's when Sweden started converting the population to Christianity and the prehistorical era gradually ended. Maybe they teach differently now.
More about the grave. I don't know why The Guardian would talk about Vikings in this context at all, because the erstwhile population of current day Finland is not considered to have been Vikings, afaik. They were similarly warlike, and the graves from that era have a lot of weapons, and they certainly encountered Vikings, but they never participated in the raiding, and isn't that what makes Vikings Vikings? Their language and religion was also different. But anyway. I don't mean to correct you because the larger point stands. When I saw the headline in a Finnish news paper about that grave and traditional gender roles my first thought was, well, maybe the gender roles hadn't become traditional then yet. Just some additional context, which could be illuminating or could be totally dated.
I did the stupid thing and sent you asks about the Suontaka burial before reading the Cambridge article about it: I'm reading it now, and my comments seem fairly useless. Feel free to ignore with extreme prejudice. We're in agreement on the guardian article.
Aha, well, we all make mistakes from time to time, so no worries! However, since you do touch on a few points that I would like to discuss, I'm going to go ahead and answer, whether for you or anyone else who might find it useful. (It's the teacher in me, I'm afraid.)
First, I have to say that I had a definite "eeegh" moment at the idea that the eleventh/twelfth century isn't "medieval" in Finland just because it (at least prior to the Baltic/Northern crusades, if we're considering them to begin with the Wendish Crusade in 1147) wasn't yet fully Christianized. Scholars pretty universally accept "medieval history" as referring to the time period between 500--1500 CE (the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the Renaissance). These, of course, are horribly Eurocentric frames of reference, but there you have it. Any event or culture taking place within that span of dates, no matter where in the world it is or what its socio-political circumstances may be, is medieval. We have to call out the pernicious equivalence of "medieval" with "Western Christian European," since that seems to be the underlying assumption. This is also what makes people mistakenly think that the medieval world (which, y'know, was just as big as it is now) is exclusively about white Christian Europe, and that no other global regions have a medieval history. Either way, the eleventh/twelfth century is actually closer to the end of the medieval era than it is to the start. I'm certainly not suggesting that you were consciously implying this; I have no trouble believing that that is indeed how they taught it twenty years ago. But yeah, the idea that still-largely-pagan eleventh-century Finland couldn't be "medieval" until it's Christian is definitely not the case as understood now.
The idea that anywhere in eleventh-century Europe is still "prehistorical" in any sense of the word is likewise a little baffling, tbh. Once more, it associates "history" only with "Christianity," and that would get quite a bit of pushback if included in a paper on medieval studies today. That is what also annoys me deeply when I see people describing the pre-Columbian Americas as "prehistoric" (read: pre-white-people-historic). If the chief marker of "history" is "written history," sure, there is a very narrow pedagogical argument to be made that these societies don't have narratives or chronicles in the standard historiographical sense. But also, uh, European colonialism and conquest destroyed vast swathes of records that we have never been able to read, understand, or even access, because they're just not there anymore. There is ample evidence that the ancient (and I do mean ANCIENT, up to thousands of years BCE) and early-to-late-medieval Mesoamerican societies had complex systems of writing, astronomy, calendar-keeping, and other history-recording practices, right up until 1492. There are something like four (FOUR) pre-Columbian Mayan scrolls still in existence, out of probably thousands and thousands, because the Spanish destroyed the rest. So "prehistoric," unless you're literally referring to the Stone Age, is never a politically neutral word or a word to use uncritically...
...and speaking of the Stone Age, we actually have histories for that too! Or rather (iirc) the Ice Age, because for example, Aboriginal Australians transmit their history orally and require each new generation to memorize it, word for word, exactly as taught to them. Some of these histories stretch back over ten thousand years, which means that we actually have first-person accounts of life during the end of the Ice Age, and scientists recently discovered that these traditional narratives accurately reflected the archaeological and geological record of Australia during the time period in question. (Indigenous people know what they're talking about and should be listened to, example number 85,000.) Of course, the Western-white-supremacist model of historiography calls these just "legends" or "myths" or "folktales" rather than history, because I guess not writing it down in a chronicle as a monk in a European Christian monastery in the year 1015 or whatever doesn't qualify as history for some people. (I don't have strong opinions about this or anything. Welp.)
I likewise don't know why the Guardian article brought up the Vikings, aside from the fact that they were quoting someone who explicitly used the Vikings in a hypothetical scenario about "traditional gender roles." This person expressed surprise that an intersex person living in a medieval Scandinavian society could rise to a high social role, by citing the widespread belief that "Vikings" were all dedicated to being very manly at all times and nobody with feminine qualities/feminine-coded social power could rule over them. I don't know if this was just a bad phrasing (plus, it obviously overlooks the often-egalitarian nature of medieval Scandinavian societies and plays into the favored white supremacist stereotype of the Vikings as some Master Aryan Race Where Men Were Men, etc) or what, but yeah, it's wrong across the board. Viking is the name of an occupation, not an ethnicity. It comes from the word wicing, meaning "seafarer" or "sea raider," and referred only to those guys who went out on their longships and stole a lot of stuff from their neighbors, most notably in the eighth to eleventh centuries. Their families back at home were part of the exact same society and benefited from those raids, but strictly speaking, they weren't vikings. We use the word "Viking" to describe any member of a medieval Scandinavian society, but it's similar to describing everyone living in the eighteenth-century Caribbean, no matter who they were or their social status or ethnic background, as "pirates," which is obviously inaccurate.
As you correctly point out, the Finns aren't considered quite the same as the Norwegians, Danes, and Swedes (as anyone can tell from looking at their written language; N/D/S are mutually intelligible and derive from the same linguistic family, while Finnish is COMPLETELY different and comes from an altogether separate branch of the tree) and therefore it's even more baffling that the person quoted in the Guardian article would cite them as an example of a "Viking" society. Likewise as you note, the whole phrase "traditional gender roles" is intensely problematic in most contexts, and especially here. It assumes that modern Western ideals of sex and gender have been static and unchanging throughout history, and that means that we tend to read our own (biased) assumptions onto the historical record and then get surprised when, shock of shock, they don't fit. The burial at Suontaka seems to have been of a biologically intersex person (i.e. someone with Klinefelter syndrome), but this is also the case when it comes to people assigned the usual male or female at birth, without any complicating genetic conditions. I'm working on a book review for an entire edited volume that discusses the intense gender-fluidity and proto-transgenderism in some medieval saints' lives, and how obviously the fact that they have been held up as a holy example, while explicitly subverting the so-called Traditional Gender Roles of the Middle Ages, means that it was (and is) a lot more complicated than shallow stereotypes and Bad Medievalism would have it.
Anyway, this is long enough (especially considering that you graciously offered me the chance to ignore it) so I think we'll stop here for now. But yes, there you have it. :)
