Fats Waller was jazz musician, composer, performer, an actor, and he had a memorable “joie de vivre”. Behind the piano, he could work out songs at a very fast pace. He must have composed 400 hundred or more. He sold many of them when he had financial difficulties. An imposing figure with facial expressions while he was singing. He played what could be an earlier version of the jazz we know today called Stride style. It involves playing a syncopated rhythm with your left hand, included the bass, while your right hand is improvising and playing the melody. We owe him songs such as “Ain’t Misbehavin” and “Honeysuckle rose”. He was extremely popular during his short life, he died at 39 of pneumonia. I hope some day, we’ll have a movie about his life and his accomplishment. Jazz owes him a great deal.

Fats Waller était un musicien de jazz, compositeur, homme de scène, acteur et il avait une joie de vivre légendaire. Derrière son piano, il pouvait composer des chansons à un rythme très rapide. Il doit en avoir composé 400 ou plus. Il en vendait plusieurs quand il avait des difficultés financières. Un homme imposant physiquement, il aimait faire des expressions faciales quand il chantait. Il jouait ce qu’on pourrait appeler une version précédente du jazz contemporain appelé Stride style. Il s’agit de garder le rythme de la main gauche, incluant la bass , pendant que la main droite s’occupe de l’improvisation et de la mélodie. Nous lui devons des chansons comme « Ain’t Misbehavin », « Honeysuckle Rose��». Il fut extrêmement populaire durant sa vie courte, il est mort à 39 ans de pneumonie. J’espère qu’un jour, on aura droit à un film sur sa vie et ses accomplissements. Le jazz lui doit beaucoup.

How do we write about a unique singer like Billie Holiday? Billie Holiday was a unique singer because of her deep and trumpet-like voice. Self-taught, she started to sing in Harlem. Her friend, the sax player Lester Young, called her “Lady Day” and it stuck. A special singer who bent her phrasing and favored slow tempos.

I love many of her songs but “These foolish things” is among the top. You can add, “I’ll be seeing you” and “Lover man”. She put a stamp on these songs. She is showing her vulnerability and loneliness. A daring artist who never back down in front of a challenge. She sang “Strange fruit” a loaded song about lynching in the South, knowing very well the trouble she brought to herself. The US government targeted her for most of her career but she sang it until the end. Drug and alcohol were part of her demise. Billie Holiday won 4 Grammys posthumously. She is unforgettable.

Comment écrire à propos d’une chanteuse singulière comme Billie Holiday? Billie Holiday était unique parce qu’elle avait une voix douce qui imitait la trompette. Autodidacte, elle a commencé sa carrière à Harlem. Son ami, le saxophoniste Lester Young, l’a surnommé « Lady Day » et c’est resté. Une chanteuse originale qui allongeait les notes et préférait les morceaux lents.

J’aime plusieurs de ses chansons mais « These foolish things » est parmi mes préférées. Il faut ajouter « I’ll be seeing you » et « Lover man ». Elle a laissé sa marque sur ces chansons. Elle a montré sa vulnérabilité et sa solitude. Une artiste audacieuse qui ne reculait pas devant des défis. Elle a chanté « Strange Fruit », une chanson qui dénonçait le lynchage dans le Sud, en sachant qu’elle s’attirait des problèmes. Le gouvernement américain la harcela durant presque toute sa carrière mais elle la chanta jusqu’à la fin. La drogue et l’alcool participèrent à ses problèmes de santé. The Canadian jazz singer Kellylee Evans is an experienced vocalist. She can reach high notes with ease and her improvisation skills are excellent. She sings jazz, but can venture in soul, pop, and hip-hop. The songwriter won a Juno Award in 2011.

What I enjoy the most is her crafted rendition of Nina Simone’s work. She made an all album called « Nina ». She added her own classy way of singing and I enjoy it very well. In addition, I like her album “Greenlight”. Her song “Holding you” has a beautiful trumpet. She has known internationally and opened stars like George Benson.

Kellylee Evans est une chanteuse de jazz d’expérience. Elle peut chanter haut et son style d’improvisation est excellent. Elle est versatile et chante aussi bien du jazz, de la soul, du pop et du hip-hop. La compositrice a obtenu un prix Juno en 2011.
