The Marvel family being more stable than any other superhero family is my bread and butter. Like you see all these other groups having various amounts of discourse. Arguments between hero and sidekick, family drama, dead family members coming back and hating everyone else(and no, that’s not exclusive to the bats, it actually happens a lot).

And then you have the Marvel family in the background, planning out their next trip to Disney World or whatever.

I kid you not, in Power of Shazam, Junior and Marvel did have a fight, and he did leave for like half of the series. So when they reunite you’d expect some bad blood and Freddy immediately leaving, right?

WRONG! Freddy takes the twins to the movies and tells them he has his license so he’s like “Hey, wanna go on a joyride?” And they’re like “YES!” And they just have the best time because Billy is Freddy’s little brother and he won’t let anything get in the way of their friendship. And him and Mary went right back to being sweet to each other, which, I’m not the biggest fan of their ship, but it was cute nonetheless.

You could add in Dudley and Tawny and it still wouldn’t budge. Adam’s like a fly on the wall. Adrianna and Amon are vibing with their new extended family and Billy’s side eying his magic-related brother because how did he bag ISIS?

And then there’s the Shazamily. With…literally nothing wrong. It’s just eight foster kids making a home. Add in Malik who is a very confused brother/cousin, and Tawny because he deserves to be here.

While everyone else is going through new trauma, the Shazamily/Marvel family are vibing on their magic train.

Like all of them suck ass, why try redeeming them if they have no redeeming qualities.

Like Maddie and Buck’s parents are insane, not only do you have Buck to only save Daniel; you told your probably 9-12 yr old daughter to never bring him up again, to act like he doesn’t exist..

Then you ignore Buck for all his life and make him feel as if he did something wrong; making him feel like a burden like a loser..

Then you get upset with Maddie when buck finds out about his dead brother that he failed to save. And you’re yelling and crying at him saying he never made your life easy.

And like was he supposed to ? He didn’t ask for any of that and Maddie didn’t either.

You practically abandoned her too because she ‘ran off with Doug’ you literally never gave you daughter a reason to stay or to trust you.

It’s them never thinking about Buck and his feelings and making him feel like a disappointment. Making him think that the only way to ever get their attention as a kid was to put himself in a bunch of dangerous situations.

And to get hurt because that was the only time that they ever showed him that they cared about him.

It was them always putting their feelings about the past first and thinking about their future with Buck.

Not only do you neglect your wife and kid- your son who tried to build some—any type of relationship with you. And you just flat out refuse to acknowledge him. Then you guys move out to a different country/state whatever…

You guys stay out there for some years and you’re ready to go back but your isn’t and you’re like you know fuck you and bye ✌🏾

Then while you’re back at home your WIFE ! Your wife falls ill with cancer; and your first thought isn’t hey let me go be there for my wife and kid or anything- it’s like ‘what can I do vibe’ then your wife dies and you move on and have another kid.

You don’t comfort your son during his time of grief or anything, you just move on. Then years later the kid you have with your now current wife; is now moving out to where Your first son stays and you’re like watch him and help him..

You never really apologize or anything, you just move on with your life.

But it’s like for the moment the guy can even think- it’s was Eddie being there for his mom when his dad wasn’t.

It was Eddie at the Age of like 9 stepping up and being the man of the house. It was Eddie being there for his mom and trying to drive the car and get her to the hospital because shes in labor with Sophia, and he was probably did same thing with Adrianna.

It’s Eddie growing up way too early; it’s Eddie having Christopher and both Helena and Ramon are pressing Eddie to marrying Shannon and step up (which Yeah he’s got to take care of his kid) but Eddie and Shannon were literally teens and making them get married at that age just added a whole lot of pressure on them.

Even though Eddie doesn’t regret the marriage or anything; And still it’s Eddie going out to war and then coming back— to stay with his kid and it’s him move miles away from his parents—And it’s them saying ‘you can’t do that you’ve barely been around and he need and your son needs the best’ implying that Eddie isn’t what’s best for his kid ?

And them constantly after that telling eddie in their own way that what he’s doing isn’t enough- that he’s going to bring his kid down and he needs to do right by his kid..

And it’s never about Eddie and it’s never how’s Eddie (their son) doing— and how can they help be there for him or nothing. It’s always about Chris and never him.

-They didn’t comfort him when Shannon died and they definitely didn’t comfort her when she was alive and Eddie was out serving.

And they don’t comfort Eddie with the whole Kim thing either- like I get it Eddie messed up by seeing her and all that; but there this lady was with his whole dead ex wife’s face and he didn’t know what to do but to go talk with because— he’s so clearly hasn’t gotten any closure in her death,but I digress.

So with the whole Kim thing they don’t think to be like oh OUR son is clearly going through something and has been going through something for quite a long time— let’s take this moment and talk with him.. NO ITS

The Jewel Riders graphic novel

so, how was it?

What I loved:

-The art. Gorgeous! Flowed well, the colors were good. Love it!

-That they made Merlin creepy. In the cartoon Merlin is clearly supposed to be a gentle, all-wise mentor but something about him always came off as a tiny bit creepy in a way the creators of the show did not intend. The creators of the comic picked up this creepiness and ran with it and I am well chuffed that something that was a fanfic idea I had was also going through these creators minds and they went with it and I love it.

-The creators’ love for the world of the Jewel Riders. They brought back the sheep! They remembered Kale’s evil-baby-deer form! They love Tamara and got her spot on! (true Jewel Riders fans love Tamara, we all just do) they had a scene where Fallon is upset and sits with Moondance mirroring one of the more powerful moments in the show. The writers of this comic must have really loved the cartoon, the silliness and the darker tone both together. This is completely a Jewel Riders graphic novel. It’s got the right vibe, the right worldbuilding, it is so perfect at being what it is!

-The plot driver being Queen Anya/Adrianna’s love for her banished sister, with flashbacks to them as teenagers in training to be Jewel Riders. Setting up Merlin as being responsible for Kale getting denied her magic jewel and turning evil and opening up redemption possibilities. Flashback images of young Kale and Adrianna. This is the perfect plot decision, I love it, 10/10 no notes.

What I did not love:

-The story was presented… not badly, but there were a lot of moments that made me go “I think this is what they’re trying to say, but I’m not sure.” For example, Gwen is getting ready to marry Drake and become queen, and she doesn’t want to. I think the intended plot is…

Land Beyond Dreams, that’s what I think the intended plot is. In the cut-from-the-final-version words of Princess Rosella, “But I’m not prepared to put my freedom on the shelf. How can I share with someone else what I don’t understand myself?” Gwen likes Drake but isn’t sure she wants to marry him and she knows she doesn’t want to marry him right NOW, and she knows she’ll be queen someday but she isn’t ready to stop adventuring YET… is what I think the graphic novel is saying, but it isn’t saying why Gwen can’t just say all that and spend more years as a Jewel Rider.

And it seems like Drake got fired from being a wolf riding boy Jewel Rider to… be Gwen’s full time bodyguard and fiance? But why would that mean giving up his own adventuring? And why does everybody seem to be cutting him out of all the action? There’s no logical reason he isn’t still a Jewel Rider. He even has his Forest Stone in a few panels.

While I utterly love how Queen Adrianna missing her sister summoned said sister back from evil banishment but it happened kind of confusingly. Adrianna summoned her sister, started seeing visions of Kale? Gwen didn’t see them. And then suddenly the land is all thorny and apocalyptic with no “Since Merlin said that Kale had returned, evil thorn plants have been growing out of control!” from anybody.

...is anyone else getting the same vibe that I’m trying to describe here? Like there’s a good plot, but like I’m having to do some long stretches to connect the pieces and the writing could have been changed just slightly to pull everything together in a way that requires less “it seems like” from the reader.

-And here comes the rant.

The thing I really did not love. The thing that made me downright furious with the creators of this graphic novel.

The book had nothing to help new readers who hadn’t seen the cartoon understand what was going on. No little explanatory text, no introductions to the characters and world. There needed to be at least a simple character page like manga have in the beginning… hang on, I can photoshop. The graphic novel needed this:

Ok I made that in like 5 minutes and it’s garbage, but you see my point! This would have added so much for people who just thought the cover was cool and picked up the graphic novel with no prior knowledge of the world. Without it, I’m afraid that the book will only sell to fans of the show, and I can’t imagine that there are enough of us to keep a graphic novel series going. So I think the creators’ decision to write something that’s ONLY for old fans and NOT AT ALL for new fans will result in the series being a flop instead of delivering more Jewel Riders fun for all of us for years to come, and for that I am so angry I could spit nails, so angry I could yell at the people who made a graphic novel that I have so much good to say about!

I hope so much that I’m wrong, and there will be more volumes published because I am just going wild to find out what happens next. What’s up with Kale now that she’s back? What’s up with Merlin now that he’s getting more and more questionable?

And as a longtime fan, what else are the creators going to bring back? Kit the prismfox? That critter made an impression on a lot of us! Ian, the beast of the forest who Gwen kinda had a thing with? The gliders? Will Morgana be back? Will we see any of the other girls’ parents? Will there be anything about Moondance and Cleo being princesses of the unicorns? Might they introduce another zebracorn friend for Shadow, or explore his origins? Could they go mining in the show bible and pull out the biggest unused gemstone: Gwen’s younger sister Tara? They’d have to figure out a way to explain how Tara was never mentioned once in all the show, but maybe she was hidden away for her protection, or kidnapped and the queen was so distraught she swore never to speak of it or something, silly lampshades but why not?

The world of Avalon has so many directions for a writer to explore and I want to see all of them!

Sons of Mars refs and nods pt1

I put a lot of references into Sons of Mars and I thought it'd be fun to have a post detailing all the nods and research from the comics there are!

The title is a spin on the Martian Manhunter solo (written by John Ostrander and drawn by Tom Mandrake) collection title.

We pulled the idea of J'onn and Ma'al going on a pilgrimage as a form of revisiting their origin story from the first issue of the "Son of Mars" collection, Pilgrimage. This line is lifted more or less from the comic (we even wanted J'onn to be talking to Clark like he does in the source material).

Double Stuff the cat is from Action Comics #1037 Martian Manhunter: A Face In The Crowd (written by Shawn Aldridge and art by Adrianna Melo)

This line about memories being passed down as a form of history is from In my Life (pt 1) (written by Ostrander, drawn by Eduardo Barreto). We pulled most of J'onn and Ma'al's relationship from this comic, since it goes into a lot of detail about their origin.

The general look of Mars (from the martians to the environments) largely pull from Martian Manhunter 2019: Identity (written by Steve Orlando with art by Riley Rossmo). I really like that they clearly took their time to develop a unique visual language for Mars, especially the organic look of the buildings and the fun shapes of the spaceships. Rossmo does not get enough credit for creating such a fresh take on not only the environments but the martians as well! All the martians look unique and have different outfits, which we wanted to do as well!

Our only rule for the environment was that we didn't want any pyramids. Because ancient astronaut theory is racist garbo and I don't want it in my Martian worldbuilding!

This page with Sha'sheen and M'yrnn is a direct homage to their page from In my Life. Idk how it happened but the parents look very t4t in our version lol

Telescope romance scene is from MM 2019: Identity! The color scheme and the vibes were already great, I didn't change much haha. M'yri'ah's characterization, J'onn geeking out about other planets, and J'onn's parents' disapproval of M'yri'ah as a partner are all from Identity. I really liked how that story fleshed her out as a character.

I also based M'yri'ah's design off of her Identity true and public forms. I went for less pixar-mom hourglass shape and more buff and built since she's a fighter in our version. We wanted her to be as much a renaissance man as J'onn is often depicted as.

M'yri'ah refers to Earth as Thu'ulc'andra and Mars is referred to as Ma'aleca'andra in our comic. This is a continuation of Ostrander referencing CS Lewis' Space Trilogy for how martians named other planets. However! In Ostrander's version he named earth Per'elandra, which is what Venus is referred to in the Space trilogy. This was later changed via community poll by Orlando for Identity.

Kind of a homage to In my Life (pt3): Earthfall, but really I found an opportunity to continue the tradition of showcasing martian boinking that always happens in J'onn's origin story for some reason.

Not a Martian Manhunter reference, but more a new spin on White Martians. Inspired off of the Draag from the French film, Fantastic Planet. I love colossal set pieces~

Songs to cry to: DPS Girls (Headcanons) Essentially I'm assigning songs to the dps girls that I think they'd cry to with an explanation as to why. My asks are open and requests are welcome <3

Elizabeth Caledonia “Calamity” / Ashe: 100% would cry listening to ‘anything’ by Adrianna Lenker, especially Steve Fisher's cover. The softness of the guitar, the way the lyrics would feel inside her, it would bring back memories she wants to forget and move forwards from. The song's all about lost memories, longing and losing connections to people, which is something she knows all too well. She never lets anyone see her cry, but if you played this song in front of her, Elizabeth would bawl her eyes out like a baby.

Echo: Although she can't cry, nor emulate that action, she does feel torn about certain songs and feels a difference inside herself that she equates to crying. One of those songs is ‘Dead Hearts’ by Stars. It's all about haunting memories and dealing with losing a loved one - something Echo can relate to deeply.

Mei-Ling Zhou: A song I think Mei might feel emotional about or cry to is ‘The Night We Met’ by Lord Huron. The lyrics explores feelings of loss, with the desire to go back to better times with those people or things you lost. It's something Mei still struggles to cope with, and the song would make her feel seen, as though she wasn't alone throughout the struggle.

Fareeha Amari / Pharah: Fareeha wouldn't admit this because she feels silly for crying over it, but she gets emotional over the song ‘Apple’ by Charli XCX. The discussions surrounding generational trauma, broken relationships with mothers, and wanting to escape it all is something that rings true for her, and it's something that can be hard for her to cope with at times. Apple's upbeat, and she finds enjoyment in it's light-hearted nature, but if she focuses on the lyrics (especially the line “I guess the apple don't fall far from the tree. 'Cause I've been looking at you so long now I only see me”) she swells up. With her joining Overwatch, just as her mother did before, it hits even harder and closer to home.

Vivian Chase / Sojourn: ‘Hurt’, covered by Johnny Cash but originally made by Nine Inch Nails is a song that Vivian's banned from all playlists she's got a say in, and it's because the themes of it hit too close to home. She listened to it a lot during her time in Overwatch, especially after the first few missions where she lost co-workers and fellow fighters to the omnic crisis. The song explores themes of regret, pain and the passage of time, so it's something that Vivian feels too closely to her heart. The song also reminds her of what happened to her sister and niece, and makes her feel both seen and isolated in her emotions.

Olivia Colomar / Sombra: For Olivia, she's rarely moved by music in the sense that she cries. It's not something she feels personally affected by, usually, even when the lyrics come scarily close to her lived experiences. However, one that would cause her eyes to water even a little is ‘Last Minute’ by Kitty. It's a song that explored wanting a genuine connection, with toxic relationships lingering over. The way the lyrics explore being trapped but having your own unhealthy tendencies is something Olivia feels is close to her own struggles. She finds the song soothing, as though it's comforting her and telling her she's not alone. That feeling alone is enough to make Olivia cry.

Satya Vaswani / Symmetra: I think Satya would find ‘Sea, Swallow Me’ by Cocteau Twins a song that makes her emotional and cry - even though theres no confirmed lyrics, it's up to interpretation and she would find the eeriness of the vocals, the sense of melancholy and fragility the instrumentals create and the overal vibe of vulnerability soothing to her mind. It's something she never expected to feel, and appreciates the song for evoking an emotional response from her in the first place.

Lena Oxton / Tracer: Lena's always struggled with the feeling like you don't belong, wanting to connect with others and instability; so the song ‘Duvet’ by BOA would elicit an emotional response from her. The instrumentals, the lyrics themselves, they all resonate with the way that goes on in her mind, including the guilt she feels for the death of Mondatta. It's a song that rings true to her, as though it came from her heart, and she can't listen to it without thinking of these things and feeling seen.

Amelie Lacroix / Widowmaker: As Amelie explores her emotions, and encourages herself to explore what those emotions mean, that comes with the feeling of crying being reintroduced all over again. It's something she's still struggling to regulate, with music often making an impact on how well she copes with it. One song in particular is ‘This Night Has Opened My Eyes’ by The Smiths. Olivia had recommended it to her, as she was looking for more moody songs to explore her reactions to them, but didn't expect for the lyrics to feel like they're speaking to her. The lines that make her feel the most emotional are; “You kicked and cried like a bullied child - a grown man of 25” because it reminds her of her initial reactions to Blackwatch's experiments on her, and how hard she fought against them. It reminds her of how powerless she was, even though she was a grown married woman. She often blames herself, and that lyric especially hit close to home. “Oh he said he'd cure your ills, but he didn't and he never will.”  because it reminds her of what Moira has said during treatments. When she heard that line and processed what it meant, she had a visceral and quick response as though it triggered something inside it. It quite literally opened her eyes to what happened, and made her feel seen and yet powerless all the more.

APIMEDA (Asian, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern and Desi American) artists based in Maryland, DC and Virginia creatively express their ideas of love and home, including the meaning of home, how they respond to the question, “Where are you from?” and more. Through research from AA&CC’s Greater Baltimore Asian Community History Project, this exhibit honors the Station North neighborhood's ongoing transformation from a historic Koreatown to a diverse arts district. Curated by Nerissa Paglinauan with Guest Co-curator Ryan Jafar Artes.

What happens when the treatment is worse than the disease? Trisha Gupta’s solo exhibition at Night Owl Gallery is a collection of research, documentation, and classification of 3 years of study centering around Forest Haven Asylum in Laurel, Maryland. It has come to light that in the 1960s-70s, the staff there criminally abused, tortured and murdered over 387 patients that were then unceremoniously buried in unmarked graves on the campus.

can i just say i don't think adrianna lama or lima whatever her name is was ever that pretty i think she's like standard and attractive and okay for the vs branding but like i don't consider her like "pretty" i guess she gives masculine vibes off her face is just idk like yes looking at her she isn't ugly she also just isn't what i consider pretty whatsoever like she's just an average woman with good facial bones that happens to be tall. most models/ runway models i don't find that pretty tbh but actresses that happen to model are always pettier and more feminine looking like kaya scodelario for example but obviously i am extremely biased cuz i literally adore how she plays effy stonem just like notiing how beauty isn't super subjective and its all pretty in different ways. i obviously gravitate
