大家好! Pa and I revisited the restaurant which serves salmon hotpot and ordered 1 for each of us. As we ate, we discussed the current state of the world. 2 ongoing wars, 1 of which is at risk of expanding into a larger scale one, heightened geopolitical tensions as well as elevated prices of everything have impacted global disposable incomes. After insane price increases over the past 2 years, several restaurants now offer deals to lure customers back. This is very welcome, of course, or else they won't get much business. Times are lean, some companies are laying off employees and with prices still high, numerous households are looking to maximise value for their hard-earned dollars.

1 such deal was a Japanese lunch special for 2. Each set comes with salad, mentaiko botan ebi (botan shrimp), clam miso soup and green tea. Diners order their mains from a list. Mummy and I revisited the restaurant since the deal was a decent one and their seafood is fresh. She had kaisen donburi and I chose hotate kaisen donburi. I've written about their salad, kaisen donburi and clam miso soup before, nothing new here. Served sashimi style, the botan ebi was very fresh as well as mildly sweet, whilst the sauce and ebiko added flavour and texture. The hotate kaisen donburi didn't disappoint either. The sushi rice was vinegary and fragrant - perfect with the fresh seafood sashimi.

Several fine dining restaurants have shut their doors. Customers can tolerate overcharging for miniscule portions of food during good times; not so much during a period of higher prices and volatile global economic outlook. Casual and fine casual dining are increasingly popular whilst mouth-watering Asian flavours like Thai, Chinese, Korean and more are spicing up our vibrant hawker scene alongside local favourites. Food businesses that deliver high nutritional value and taste for relatively affordable prices see long queues at their stalls. People are still willing to spend, but they want the best bang for their buck and that's not wrong!
Tumblr media
A new stall which sells dumplings, noodles and chive parcels opened at a coffee shop near the office. I couldn't resist trying their tomato egg noodles because who doesn't love a classic? These smooth, super QQ strands are divine - so bouncy and chewy! Besides fragrant eggs and tomatoes, the dish included blanched bak choy and soya bean sprouts, which add crunch and texture to an already delicious meal. This was a very huge bowl; I'd thought I wouldn't be able to finish it. Surprise surprise, I somehow managed to polish off the lot. It was so YUM, I couldn't let any of it go to waste.

These are very challenging times for countries around the globe but, to parents and me, we've weathered covid, what can be worse, really? Just roll with the punches, be grateful we're still able to eat well and soldier on. Battle scars exist for a reason: if we learn the lessons, we can better deal with the curveballs life throws at us. No matter how difficult our situations are, remember that genocide is still happening in Gaza. We truly ought to feel grateful we still enjoy life's basic essentials that they lack. It almost feels like a crime to complain. 下次见!

OJT EATS | Dim Sum & Duck
Tumblr media
We're always on the lookout for good dim sum in London and one of the places that keeps on coming up that we hadn't been to was Dim Sum & Duck in Kings Cross. It's a place that often has massive queues out the door so when we had the opportunity to get there early on a weekday, we headed on down.
Tumblr media
The first dish to arrive was a beef ho fun. There was a generous amount of beef in here and the noodles themselves were bouncy and flavourful. A good start to the meal!
Tumblr media
Then onto more traditional dim sum; in this case, fried prawn dumplings with salad cream. These were fried very well and had big fat prawns inside. We were starting to understand why this place has such a great reputation. The only gripe we had was that the salad cream was a bit stingy and didn't have any fruit in it.
Tumblr media
Onto more prawn dimsum, this time har gau. We don't know where they source their prawns from but whereever it is, they clearly know where to get big prawns from! The skin of the dumplings were a little less impressive but overall, still super tasty.
Tumblr media
Onto our last prawn dim sum of the meal: the cheung fung. This was unfortunately the most disappointing of the 3. While the prawns were still good, the sauce was a bit bland and the actual cheung fung just wasn't chewy or bouncy enough.
Tumblr media
After the classics, we decided to go for somethng a little different. These were pan fried dumplings with duck and chestnut in them. They bottoms were really niec and crispy with a fluffy bun on top but the filling was a little lacking. The flavour was nice but there just wasn't quite enough of it.
Tumblr media
Last but by no means least, we had a little bit of veg, in this case, some morning glory. This was well seasoned and tender. Nothing special but not bad at all.
All in all, this was a pretty good dim sum meal. It's up there with one of the better dim sum places in London but I'm not sure it's worth the hype and definitely not the more than 1 hour queues that there sometimes is. If you do get a chance to go, get there bang on opening and you'll have a great meal. Just make sure you don't get there too late and let a queue form!

Realized we haven't done a food bowl pic in awhile. Dinner tonight: Iams Mature/RedPaw Fitness, fresh homemade chicken stock, watermelon, cottage cheese, and pomegranate seeds, lol.
Supplements are currently being given in the morning since it's just easiest in case I get home from work later and someone else needs to feed the dogs dinner. We've also attempted to vary/change meal times so they aren't 7 am and 5 pm on the dot.
Supplements for everyone are currently Dasuqin with MSM tablets (I managed to find several bottles of each size marked down and Petsmart was running a promo for bogo at a discount), Bonnie and Clyde fish oil, and acidophilus a few times a week. I stopped giving Mud Myos a couple weeks ago and just have Truly on it. I can't afford to give him a full dose and I'm not sure how much a lower dose was helping. That stuff DOES work though. Truly will be staying on it and I would use it if another dog had surgery and needed it during recovery.
As of today we're using up a 7 lb bag of Iams Mature. I ended up with...96 lbs? of RedPaw Fitness back in June or July because I ordered four 12 lb bags of RedPaw from Hollywood Feed when they ran a promotion and all the bags were broken, so they sent me 4 more bags...most of which were broken, but less so. I posted on a dog food group and someone said they've had that happen before with the small bags, so just FYI. Needless to say we've been eating the RedPaw the past few months. I really do like it and how the dogs do on it. It's just a little high calorie for Mud at his current activity level and I want more kibble available to use as treats and wiggle room. I think Mud digests it super well and his poops are usually small and solid on it. I still have a little bit left to use that I transferred to vacuumed sealed bags. Oh, and the single unblemished bag at the house in AZ
I picked up the Iams because I was looking at kibbles that have recommended servings that are closer in kcals to what my dogs can actually handle, which is typically much lower than most bags. Iams weight control formula has only 307 kcal/cup now and 2.5 cups is the weight reduction serving, so too not bad. Chewy currently has 40% off Iams, so I was like ok, but I want to see if my dogs even tolerate it. Seems that nobody sells 7 lb bags of that particular formula in stores, so we're trying out the senior formula. So far poops are fine, if large, but that was at around 50/50 or less. I'm not sure I want to see Mud on 2.5 cups of an Iams formula, lol.
Next in the queue is Diamond Naturals Senior which looks like Cheerios and is highly amusing. Experimenting with foods has been fun, especially some of the ones I'd never think of feeding several years ago.

Well, people are evacuating now. This escalated so quickly. No hotel will take a dog as big as Chewie so. Guess we're gonna ride it out. I've stayed in for storms this bad before but its been awhile. This is the worst in my area since Rita. Going to spend the day sandbagging my house and boarding up my windows. If past experience is an indicator I could be several days to a week without power. Again, I have a queue going but I might disappear otherwise yall 😅

@foxofthe100 // Gets some Season 2 feels
The scuffed goggles weighed heavily in his hands as he trudged along. The world felt colder, darker now. He could still feel her in his arms, her hear voice. He could still see the bodies--God, what had they done? Why hadn’t he been fast enough? Why hadn’t he had the chance to save them all? He was going to save all of them. His fingers curl around the googles as he follows the crowd--but his footsteps slowing. His mind lost in the events that just occurred, he didn’t see her. If he had, he wouldn’t have believed it. But when his arm collided with her shoulder, his comes to--blinking back the tears as he turns to apologize, only to feel his heart stop. “Fox?”

OJT EATS | Wan Ke Premium Hot Pot
Tumblr media
So despite Taipei being unbearably hot for a good 6 months of the year, hot pot restaurants are hugely popular in Taipei. There are so many different types, all you can eat ones, ones you have to queue hours for; pretty much any type you can think of. We now will only go back to Taiwan in the summer if we really need to so often when we're there; it's perfect hot pot weather. A while ago, we gave Wan Ke Premium Hot Pot a go.
Tumblr media
This place has an all you can eat ice cream bar so while we were waiting for our hot pot, we decided to start our meal with a bit of soft serve. This was a melon flavour that was really nice and refreshing.
Tumblr media
The next to arrive on our table were the vegetable and other stuff we get along with the hotpot "main" that we ordered. It was a pretty decent spread with a good amount of veg, a good few chunks of tofu, fish balls and meat balls. Now for the broth to cook it in!
Tumblr media
This was the broth that I'd ordered. It's definitely not the prettiest of broths but it was their slightly medicinal herby broth with pork jowl in it. It was really aromatic and came with pork jowl in it already. We didn't see it happen but they grilled the pork jowl in the dry stone pot before pouring in the broth.
Tumblr media
This was the pork jowl that we fished out of the broth shortly after it arrived just so that it didn't get too overcooked. The place had the usual bar of dipping sauce ingredients which was perfect for this.
Tumblr media
The meal also came with a bowl of rice so we tried the shrimp rice. The shrimps were plump and juicy, the rice obviously cooked perfectly (we are in Taiwan after all) and a really nice slightly spicy sauce.
Tumblr media
We also got a bowl of braised pork rice. For us, this is one of the iconic Taiwanese dishes and this was a really solid version with a good amount of pork in it and the sauce a great balance of sweet and salty.
Tumblr media
For dessert, we had these fried mochis that were a little crunchy but also super soft and chewy all covered in a sugary peanut powder. Cruncy, chewy, peanut-y and sweet; what more could you want to end a meal?
This place is pretty popular and we arrived early but by the time we left, we could see a queue building for this and based on how tasty our meal was, we could definitely see why.
Wan Ke Premium Hot Pot, No. 217號, Section 4, Bade Rd, Songshan District, Taipei City, Taiwan 105
Cheers, JL
