OJT EATS | Dim Sum & Duck

We're always on the lookout for good dim sum in London and one of the places that keeps on coming up that we hadn't been to was Dim Sum & Duck in Kings Cross. It's a place that often has massive queues out the door so when we had the opportunity to get there early on a weekday, we headed on down.

The first dish to arrive was a beef ho fun. There was a generous amount of beef in here and the noodles themselves were bouncy and flavourful. A good start to the meal!

Then onto more traditional dim sum; in this case, fried prawn dumplings with salad cream. These were fried very well and had big fat prawns inside. We were starting to understand why this place has such a great reputation. The only gripe we had was that the salad cream was a bit stingy and didn't have any fruit in it.

Onto more prawn dimsum, this time har gau. We don't know where they source their prawns from but whereever it is, they clearly know where to get big prawns from! The skin of the dumplings were a little less impressive but overall, still super tasty.

Onto our last prawn dim sum of the meal: the cheung fung. This was unfortunately the most disappointing of the 3. While the prawns were still good, the sauce was a bit bland and the actual cheung fung just wasn't chewy or bouncy enough.

After the classics, we decided to go for somethng a little different. These were pan fried dumplings with duck and chestnut in them. They bottoms were really niec and crispy with a fluffy bun on top but the filling was a little lacking. The flavour was nice but there just wasn't quite enough of it.

Last but by no means least, we had a little bit of veg, in this case, some morning glory. This was well seasoned and tender. Nothing special but not bad at all.
All in all, this was a pretty good dim sum meal. It's up there with one of the better dim sum places in London but I'm not sure it's worth the hype and definitely not the more than 1 hour queues that there sometimes is. If you do get a chance to go, get there bang on opening and you'll have a great meal. Just make sure you don't get there too late and let a queue form!

Beijing Food
Beijing | Beijing Food | Chengdu | Pandas | Jiuzhaigou | Leshan | Shanghai | Suzhou | Travel Tips
It's no exaggeration to say we ate our way through the trip. There's just so much good food in China. It's often not just the food but also the whole experience. Check out this modern igloo with view of the Drum Tower where we had amazing hotpot with our friends!
Of course we had the famous Peking Duck. The most well-known restaurant is Siji Minfu, where there's often a two-hour wait. The nice driver who took us to the great wall helped us make a reservation and we only had to wait for 30 minutes or so.
We also ate the duck at another restaurant, and to tell you the truth, it was just as good.
But the real discovery for us is the dimsum in Beijing. We went to Tang Gong (唐宫),where they not only constantly refill tea for you, but also serves tender shrimp dumplings, shrimp rice rolls, and my favorite dish here, shrimp and celery rolls with exquisitely fried tofu skin.
What we also loved the cheap eats, e.g. this 护国寺小吃,with yummy halal breakfast of beef in buns, soft tofu, and a lamb stomach and organ soup that's tasty but a bit much for my son.
Beijing can be expensive. Check out this fancy supermarket near the Silk Market with pricy fruits
You can get western food like coffee and salads everywhere. And there's also fancy tapas and other kinds of western restaurants, like this one Otium.
When we returned to Beijing for the last night we had duck and more at 花家怡园, turned out to be the same restaurant we visited 10 years ago. The duck is solid, the kungpao chicken is amazing, and the pancake with beef is also very good. It is a bit on the pricy side.

Duck + Rice

I find that despite all the dim sum restaurants in London, I don’t actually end up going that often. A few weeks ago, I felt like it was time for a dim sum meal but decided to go a little untraditional and try Duck+Rice which describes itself as a Soho Pub with a Chinese Kitchen. I popped on down, not expecting anything particularly traditional but thought I’d see how it was.

The dim sum menu wasn’t particularly long but it had the classics. I do like a good siu mai and these pork and prawn ones weren’t bad. They had a nice bouncy texture.

The har gau were also pretty tasty. There were big fresh prawns in these with a nice texture to the skin. I hate it when it’s overcooked and just sort of falls apart so was happy with these.

We had a hankering for spring rolls that day so went for these crispy duck rolls. They weren’t anything too special but not too oily and with a fair amount of duck in them as filling. They hit the spot for our spring roll craving but if it wasn’t for that, this wasn’t my favourite dish.

Shrimp toast is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, especially when they are done well with proper bits of prawn in them. This was a pretty good version of them with crispy bread and nice big chunks of prawn and a good layer of sesame seeds.

These were called crispy prawn wantons on the menu and to be honest, I don’t really know what they’re normally called but I’ve always just known them as the crispy things that come with salad cream and it’s something I always order when having dim sum :)

We saw it on the menu and figured we had to order the Duck & Rice. I love roast duck and Four Seasons is normally my go to restaurant for it but I was actually pretty impressed by this. The flavour was great and the skin had that right level of crunchiness.
Overall, it was a pretty decent meal. Very different to a more authentic dimsum meal but nonetheless really quite tasty and I’d definitely go back again.

today, we are shooting more than 70 dishes for a restaurant that highlights roasts. ngl, this is one of my go-to restos. their dishes are so good +++ their prices are reasonable. i had their 3 roastings (((lechon macau, duck, and charsiu))) with braised noodles for lunch earlier and all i can say is yum, yum, and yum!
srsly, though, their meats are so tender and tasty! plus, i love love love that each meat comes with its own corresponding sauce. hehe.
besides their roasts, i also enjoy having their noodle soups and congees!!! and of course, their dimsums toooooooo~

Beijing Dumpling, Chinatown, London.
First I will say that when in Chinatown, the dumplings are a must have. From soup dumplings to dim sum, this place is fantastic for starters. Beijing dumpling was a recommendation and is great if you want tasty Chinese food on the cheap.
I personally indulged in pork soup dumplings (xiaolongbao), seafood dimsum (as pictured above), duck pancakes, hot and sour soup and sweetcorn soup. Rather than go with the a starter and then main, we decided to go with an array of starters (to fit more dumplings in).
Beijing Dumpling has a very casual vibe and was very busy when I went for dinner. As you queue up, you can see the chefs churn out dumpling after dumpling after dumpling. This allows you a bit of time to check out what dumplings you might want to try (warning you will get full quickly).
The dumplings in this place were my favourite by far. The duck and soups are fairly standard, but are worth a try to break up textures. If I went again, my whole meal would probably be more dumpling orientated. The duck was well flavoured and the food came out quite quickly.
The service here was questionable, but it’s just the type of place that this is. It’s not rude, it’s just a no frills kind of place, they got dumplings to make and people to feed. Don’t take it personally.
Paired with an ice cold green tea, this is great place to grab a bite to eat and leave feeling satisfied and your wallet not taking the heat.

Peking duck pancake / crepes .. . from scratch!
Proud to announce that I’ve successfully steamed my 1st ‘dough’ product :D haha it is quite an accomplishment for several reasons:
1. I don’t do well with flour/dough items. ..
2. I rarely steam anything (esp from raw to cooked form; I occasionally steam frozen dimsum as a way of reheating or other cooked foods for reheating purposes)
3. I followed 90%-ish of a recipe I saw on Youtube. I feel like 90% is a very high percentage for me. I usually manipulate the stated amounts of ingredients.
Let’s start!

2 cups of all-purpose flour

Half tbsp of salt

Have 1 cup of boiling water ready

Slow add in the hot water; I had ~1/3 cup leftover.

The consistency is supposed to be somewhat bouncy. Not entirely sure what that means.. . but eventually, after kneading for a few minutes, I pressed down, & the dough slightly bounced back so. .. *shrugs* your call!

Rest in bowl for 1 hr

While covering it with a moist paper towel or cloth.

Roll gently & separate the dough in half.

Cut into 8 pieces; therefore, will have 16 dough balls total.
*The video I watched had 18 dough balls. The resulting crepes were smaller & I wanted slightly larger ones so I made 16.

Roll them out. They’re ~7-8cm in diameter.

Start with 1 dough circle, & brush oil on top.
*The video I watched had sesame oil in place of regular oil. I wanted the pancake/crepes to be plain so I used normal oil.

You basically oil, stack, oil, stack . . . etc. I have my 8 dough circles here.

Then you roll! Yes, roll all 8 in the stack at once. They’ll become ~15cm, so double in size. I was hoping they’d reach 17cm... but they were getting kinda thin & I worried about them being too thin. .. Anyway, 15cm was what I ended up with.

How you steam them will vary depending on what you have available to you as tools. You may use bamboo steamer, metal steamer.. . I just used my family’s designated metal steaming dishes. It’s the right size for my crepes.

Put in steamer when the water starts to have little bubbles like this.

Steam for 6 mins.

Voila!!! You have already seen this in my previous post (the video). It was super satisfying to peel each one individually. They were sticking but they’re not stuck together.

Got my 16 crepes. There were slight variation in size but they were all roughly 15cm in diameter each.

No Peking duck, nor duck in general. .. so I used garlic chicken, cucumber, tomato, & a mix of hoisin sauce + bulgogi sauce. It was great!

Put a little bit of each ingredient in.

Roll it like a burrito.

I was surprised it was see-through :O yayyyy! The edges were a little thicker so I gotta work on that next time (the evenness).

:D
They were good! The crepes were slightly chewy when they were heated up. Ideally, you wanna have them fresh out of the steamer, then wrap your ingredients in (then eat right away), but the crepes got cold pretty fast in my house so I just microwaved them, & they were turned back to their originally softness so. .. either way, upon reheating, they will become soft again!
Bon appetit!

Had a delicious dinner at a Cantonese restaurant. Starting from the top left corner we have shrimp dumplings, pot stickers, then my favorite box toast with fruit, whipped cream, and ice cream. Next there are two platters of roasted duck and geese. And finally, they brought out a bucket of savory pork bone congee.

You advertised cooking adventure so well, I got hookedt (and also bcs it IS a fun game though 😫🍜🍖🍦). Caught myself speed walking towards the classroom so I could sit down and play it! It's thAt good!! By the way your rants about cooking games give me literal life, if you did a big ass post rating cooking games/apps youve played id NUT,, blease,,,
oh my god right! I love cooking adventure so much………. definitely one of my favorites next to cooking mama 1-3 on the ninetendo ds. the only other game I think I have the liberty in reviewing is cooking fever because I used to play it a lot in the past. It’s a 4/10 on the good cooking games scale though, because…
like many cooking games they have two currency systems. one which is generally harder to get and I know for a FACT in cooking fever it was impossible to upgrade your equipment or food without lucrative amounts of diamonds which you don’t even get regularly
they have UGLY graphics!!!! every cooking game on the market has some sleek futuristic design as if we’ve never seen a hot dog in real life which is so mcfreakin’ unrealistic and uncute.
the food per restaurant is some boring bitch shid…… they sold chicken wings and grilled corn at the chinese restaurant. while in cooking adventure they had dimsum, peking duck, chinese style pork belly LIKE! the work that went into the food!!!!!
In general, no cooking game on the market comes CLOSE to cooking adventure in terms of the amount of time that goes into researching the food, the appealing graphics and play system where it’s not a scam. the creators of cooking adventure is not on anybody’s level in the cooking game marketing and production industry. they have a fair and moral game that should be the top cooking game in the world easy!
