OJT EATS | Dim Sum & Duck

We're always on the lookout for good dim sum in London and one of the places that keeps on coming up that we hadn't been to was Dim Sum & Duck in Kings Cross. It's a place that often has massive queues out the door so when we had the opportunity to get there early on a weekday, we headed on down.

The first dish to arrive was a beef ho fun. There was a generous amount of beef in here and the noodles themselves were bouncy and flavourful. A good start to the meal!

Then onto more traditional dim sum; in this case, fried prawn dumplings with salad cream. These were fried very well and had big fat prawns inside. We were starting to understand why this place has such a great reputation. The only gripe we had was that the salad cream was a bit stingy and didn't have any fruit in it.

Onto more prawn dimsum, this time har gau. We don't know where they source their prawns from but whereever it is, they clearly know where to get big prawns from! The skin of the dumplings were a little less impressive but overall, still super tasty.

Onto our last prawn dim sum of the meal: the cheung fung. This was unfortunately the most disappointing of the 3. While the prawns were still good, the sauce was a bit bland and the actual cheung fung just wasn't chewy or bouncy enough.

After the classics, we decided to go for somethng a little different. These were pan fried dumplings with duck and chestnut in them. They bottoms were really niec and crispy with a fluffy bun on top but the filling was a little lacking. The flavour was nice but there just wasn't quite enough of it.

Last but by no means least, we had a little bit of veg, in this case, some morning glory. This was well seasoned and tender. Nothing special but not bad at all.
All in all, this was a pretty good dim sum meal. It's up there with one of the better dim sum places in London but I'm not sure it's worth the hype and definitely not the more than 1 hour queues that there sometimes is. If you do get a chance to go, get there bang on opening and you'll have a great meal. Just make sure you don't get there too late and let a queue form!

OPEN STARTER
capping at (3/4) location: the golden dragon palace
He enjoyed the last bite of his har gow, the delicate shrimp dumpling practically melting on his tongue. The restaurant hummed with lunchtime energy around them, servers weaving between tables with steaming bamboo baskets. He'd been looking forward to this meal all week—something about good dim sum always lifted his mood, no matter what legal battles awaited him. "I told you, this place has the best dim sum in town," Lucian said, reaching for the soy sauce. "Those food critics from three states over aren't wrong. Although I bet they don't know about the private rooms upstairs." He smiled, pouring himself more tea. "Want to try the Peking duck next? It's their specialty."

tsc gang as my fav foods (part 1?)
Alec - Fuzhou wan. Seemingly bland but godtier insides. It's the tastiest thing you've ever eaten. Eat 50, order 50 more. If your dad can make this, he deserves it.

Jace - Taiwanese popcorn chicken. Blonde. Crispy. Cheeky. Gorgeous. Seemingly simple but flavourly layered so well, you'll never look at another fried chicken again.

Clary - Seafood congee. Much like Oa Misua, it gives you a comfort that feels like a heated blanket. Spicy or mild, the creative freedom in choosing ur ingredients would make Michelangelo jealous.

Izzy - Sesame chicken broth. The staple soup. You eat it once and youre cured. Heart of the family. If all else fails, I know this soup's always got my back

Magnus - Dim sum. So much variety. Scrumptious 24/7. Ready for any occasion. Never a wrong choice.

Simon - Macao chicken cakes. Comfort meets unique. A nostalgic friend. You try it for fun but cant live without it now

Kit - Boba. Modern, sassy, iconic and knows it. Will steal your wallet. I can't live without you

Matthew - Oa misua. Eating a warm bowl on a cold day makes you feel cherished and more at home than family dinner on christmas eve. Misunderstood but loved

Jem - Peking duck. timeless. effortless. an absolute classic. i love you.

oh.... well hello there ma'am...
Captured a few B-level targets, rewarded myself with an Instant-boiled mutton. ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ Caught an A-level target, rewarded with a Chongqing hot pot. ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ For vacation, treated myself to some Peking duck. The taste wasn’t authentic, but it was passable. The Zhajiangmian, however, was awful—tasted like nothing but salt. Ended up tossing it to Blake, who complained I didn’t request leave in advance. Ignored him. ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ Got some v͟a͟l͟u͟a͟b͟l͟e͟ ͟i͟n͟t͟e͟l from a European informant. It was related to a case we’ve been investigating for a while with the neighboring team, so I handed it over to them. ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ This blade was passed down from that Mr. Creus. Ever since he left the Vigiles Bureau, reliable people have become fewer and fewer. Guess there’s no choice but to shoulder more responsibilities. ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ Took advantage of a rare early morning during vacation and went for some dim sum. The shrimp dumplings were delicious, and the chicken feet were tender and flavorful. However, the beef tripe was completely undercooked—it really should be removed from the signature dishes. ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ A distinguished guest paid a visit. Zhang Zhizhi is someone who never shows up without a purpose, so this meal is definitely on her. ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ Captured a few A-level targets. B͟u͟e͟n͟t performed quite well, so I let him choose a restaurant. Speaking of which, my other apprentice is about ready for their internship as well. ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ Captured a few B-level targets, rewarded myself with a hot pot meal. im bored and since im bored ima write some stupid shit involving..you guessed it (probably not stfu) Suguru Geto and his boyfriend Satoru Gojo!!! wooo (kms) this is like collage au ig? idfk dont question me
“AHEM” suguru cleared his throat glaring at a certain white haired blue eyed man who was sneaking around his room. Gojo looked behind his shoulder, his cheeks stuffed with some of sugurus sour gummy worms. with a sigh he pinches the bridge of his nose “my god satoru, youre like a child” suguru himself is trying his hardest not to laugh at his best friend. satoru swallows the gummy worms and laughs “cheer up man, ill buy you some when we head out” they planned to go to a park. suguru just nods and puts a sweater on.
after suguru gets ready he signals to satoru it was time to go. as they walked satoru talked about anything and everything on his mind, the weather, grass, how he feels about fuzzy textured blanket (spoiler he hates them). the whole time suguru listened, laughing and making some comments of his own. thats just how they were. one talked the other listened and they were both okay with that fact. “it feels weird on my skin! maybe i just have sensitive skin, honestly i dont care its WEIRD!!” satoru says frantically as suguru laughs “its not that seri-“ “YES IT IS!! nerds like you wouldnt understand” satoru said trying to sound like an edgy emo kid that tells people they wouldnt understand. suguru chuckles and takes a bite of his sour gummy worms.
“you know, there are blankets that are soft and not fuzzy?” the black hair boy says to his friend. satoru sighs “yeah i know, but buying a whole new blanket when i already have one is pointless.” suguru nods with his friends good point. they make their way to the swingings, the sun still bright is the sky. satoru immediately tries to get as high as possible while suguru watches swinging the slightest bit. “youre gonna get sick” he says as satoru gets higher and higher “SHUT UP!” he shouts back. suguru sighs and watches as his best friend attempts a 360. it was an interesting thing to watch, but obviously he fails and ends up jumping off and landing in the sand laughing, suguru just watching with a gentle smile
after satoru jumped a family looked over at him a little concerned and walked away with their kids quickly “dude the people here are gonna think youre crazy” suguru states now laughing a little “nuhuh” satoru sits up and shakes the sand out his white hair then grabs his sunglasses, blowing some sand off that.
satoru and suguru lay on top of the actual play area, the roof sheltering the slides and what not. two 6 foot something dudes on top of a play ground is slightly frightening to some children. as they lay there looking up at the now pink ish sky satoru speaks up “what if you were a cloud” he was kinda just spit balling “a cloud?” suguru questions a bit confused. satoru however nods “yeah, like if you were a cloud and you could pick your shape what would you pick?” it takes suguru a second but he closes his eyes and with a sigh he responds “your mom” “fuck youuu” they both laugh. “okay but if i could pick a shape id probably pick something simple like a duck” he says to the white haired boy. satoru nods with a hum
the sun sets and the sky darkens slowly, the dim light of the moon and street lamps brighten up the park. suguru looks at his best friend then back at the stars. “im cold” satoru blurts out of no where, suguru looks at him and asks him “wanna head back?” satoru nods with a slight yawn. they jump down and land in the sand, walking out the play ground and to the side walk. satoru looks over at his friend and put his arm around his shoulder “dont be scared pookie bear, daddies here” suguru turns to satoru a bit mortified by his last statement and they both burst out laughing.
“why cant i be daddy?” suguru says, he immediately regrets it though “you want me to call you daddy? you got sum to tell me mister man bun?” suguru rolls his eyes and shoves satoru away all the while hes laughings. they continue their walk and satoru is talking about his fear of women. maybe he really was gay..was shoko right? who knew.
they get back to campus and made their way to the apartment complex right behind it. they shared an apartment two bedroom and one bathroom, real nice. before entering the take off their shoes and shake em on the grass to get out any sand. they go inside and immediately satorus dramatic ass falls onto the couch with a loud sigh “ass up” suguru says playfully and they both laugh “see im telling you dude you MIGHT just have a daddy kink!” satoru retorts. with an eye roll suguru throws a small baggy to satoru “happy valentines day or whatever day today is” and with that suguru went into his room, his face pink.
satoru raised a brow and looked at the small baggy inside was two things, an obsidian bracelet to match with sugurus moon stone bracelet, and a note.
‘hey so you know how some friends go one dates for valentines day cause theyre both lonely or whatever. would you be down to do that with me? -geto’

following up on yesterday's ask from @niemalsetwas:
...and who actually gets mimosas at dim sum brunch vs. being tea-only purists?
the time i lost to this question daydreaming of dim sum brunch… 🤤 actually wait, hold on. now i'm invested in this. "does this world have brunch and/or dim sum" is a different question; in the interests of optimism i choose to believe such things would evolve independently regardless of the setting. but would they recognize earth dim sum?
many of the "typical" items i associate with dim sum—most kinds of fish (e.g. shu mai, oyster sauce, prawn cracker, crab rangoon) and, to a lesser extent, waterfowl (peking duck), plus anything involving rice (some dumplings, congee)—are difficult to source and/or semi-prohibitively expensive in this world.
but surely there could be alternatives? there are probably pigs, at least in the area of the red city, so we can do char siu (thank god). there are definitely chickens. definitely beef (though these, again, would be either tough or pricey). other excitingly edible animals roughly equivalent to a cow: wrhonts (?) and—god, i guess you could eat a dreadnought. you'd have dreadnought bao for months, or for a village, but you could.
what about the beverages? there's definitely alcohol; there's definitely fruit so there's definitely wine, some of it possibly even from grapes; there's also definitely citrus, and specifically oranges, so let's assume they're some variation of citrus x sinensis and theoretically we have all our mimosa ingredients! huzzah. similarly, there's probably tea; probably original to somewhere in the southern hemisphere, on the other side of the planet from ppilli, and somewhere that's decently humid, but easy enough to get outside of the boonies (i.e., ppilli).
so yes! excellent news: the teahouses of iridarra can definitely have (what earth would recognize as) dim sum, including optional brunch mimosas.
this established, on now to your actual question:
sitayqik: would be enchanted at the thought of brunch mimosas. not only because of the carbonation (novel), and not only because the priest of flowers (appropriately) often smells of orange blossoms. they are a priest, so they're theoretically expected to adhere to some standard of publicly virtuous conduct; but they're also like 27 and would very much be at the club if they weren't 1.) worried meyeqitš Might Need A Thing Of Them, Ever, and 2.) a little self-conscious of being the youngest (ordained) priest in the college. if they frequent a teahouse, they're usually (and genuinely) content with a nice floral—tea + jasmine, osmanthus, hibiscus, etc.—or even mint, but would be mightily tempted by something so sparkling and bright. perhaps to recreate once the sun goes down? hm.
akko: facultative tea consumer, ultimately beverage-neutral. 100% behind the spirit of mimosas but in practice probably just actually prefers tea. bubble tea, if he can get it; otherwise strong black (or oolong) milk tea. if he's feeling fancy, maybe even with real milk—usually sheep's, in this world. a fiend for those little egg custard tarts. would 100% get a mimosa just to needle…
meyeqitš: relative tea purist. will begrudgingly drink tea (mostly green) in public, perhaps with a spoonful of pomegranate arils sprinkled in when they think no one is looking; but they've never understood what people mean when they describe caffeine as giving a "boost." in other words, they'd rather drink nothing than drink bad tea. they are obviously not a teetotaler (they brew their own beer when in residence at the university) but they would probably view mimosas—any kind of idly recreational day-drinking, especially before noon—with some degree of suspicion, if not poorly-concealed judgment.
eyreth: ooohhhh they wanna be a classy southern society lady sipping mimosas so bad. unfortunately the [REDACTED] digestive system does not agree with most earth (or nearest equivalent) foodstuffs, and something as acidic as orange juice would probably not bode well. instead: they Yearn.
key: if it's with eyreth, it's never heard of an alcohol in its life. it might condescend to take a sober mint tea, which is fine but whatever, and then wait til it's lukewarm. if it's not with eyreth: it's going to need to take the next three whole days off of work, because it's going to get fucked up on its body weight in chili crisp. eyreth finds out what happened bc it used the company card for crab rangoon.
iustinianas: all day bottomless pitchers, bb. probably the only one of these people who knows what a champagne flute is. 🥂
#q&a#worldbuilding#the red city#sitayqik#akko#meyeqitš#eyreth#key#iustinianas#GOD i have got to get some art of the non-ppillisi characters#unfortunately i have thought of nothing but chicken curry buns for At Least Four Days.#iustinianas... god. he must be from. 2012? at LEAST#i'm not even sure that'll be his final character tag bc i'm still not sure on how i'll vicontzanize his name!!

Dear Gus & Magnus,
We put in around 25,000 steps yesterday, and then we topped that today, starting with a walk to breakfast, then we met Arika and Chu at the Museum of Modern Art. My favorite piece was George Grosz's The Poet Max Herrmann-Neisse. We got coffee and pastries in the Singapore Food Court, visited the Public Library, then Lily joined us for dinner in Koreatown at Osamil. Afterward we walked to a Korean market, then the High Line, where we took a picture with a giant pigeon, and eventually split off from the Lais. By the time we made it back to our hotel we were a little hungry, so we ducked into a dim sum and noodle place before calling it a night.
Nene sent us photos of you two and Cate eating s'mores around the fire pit at her house. We're glad you're having a good time.
Dad.

WIP FOOD QUESTIONNAIRE
Thank you for the tag @the-golden-comet
I know his is a WIP Questionnaire but I'm really really obsessed with my new WIP, Ink Of Fate so i decided to just ask them these questions. Please follow this link for accurate details.
---
Huang Rui:
1. What is one comfort meal that'll change your whole mood for the day?
"Congee with century eggs and a touch of soy sauce. It’s simple, but it reminds me of home and my childhood. The warmth of it can soothe any stress or worry."
2. What is an experience (good or bad) that has turned you off or on to a food completely?
"When I first arrived in England, I had a dish called 'haggis.' The taste was so strong and unfamiliar that it completely turned me off from trying any other traditional English foods for a while. It took me months to try anything new."

"Liver. The texture and taste just don’t sit well with me."
4. Dessert is normally saved for last, but if you could, what would you order for your entrée at a restaurant?
"I’d order a delicate dish like Peking duck. It’s rich, flavorful, and feels like a true indulgence."
5. What are some food fusions that should never be mixed?
"I once tried a dessert with chocolate and fermented tofu. That combination should never have existed—it was dreadful."
6. What food spot are you gatekeeping and why?

8. Is there a smell that reminds you of something you never want to remember?
"The smell of burning wood reminds me of the fire that destroyed part of my childhood home. It was terrifying and left a scar on my memory."

2. What is an experience (good or bad) that has turned you off or on to a food completely?
"There was a time when I was forced to eat spoiled rice during a particularly rough period in my life. Since then, I’ve never been able to stomach the sight or smell of it."
3. If you could eliminate one piece of produce, meat, dairy, or sweets off the earth, what would it be?
"I’d remove durian. The smell alone is enough to make me avoid it entirely."
4. Dessert is normally saved for last, but if you could, what would you order for your entrée at a restaurant?*
"I’d go for something hearty, like roasted lamb with garlic and rosemary. It’s rich and satisfying, much like the things I enjoy in life."
5. What are some food fusions that should never be mixed?
"Sweet and sour pork with chocolate sauce. I tried it once on a dare; it’s a mistake that should never be repeated."
6. What food spot are you gatekeeping and why?
"There’s a small, hidden restaurant in the Shadow District that serves the best braised pork belly. It’s one of the few places where I can dine in peace without attracting unwanted attention."
7. Cooking is a life skill, why haven't you started learning yet!?
"I’ve always had others to cook for me, and frankly, I don’t have the patience to learn. I’m more interested in enjoying the results."
8. Is there a smell that reminds you of something you never want to remember?
"The scent of opium smoke brings back memories of dark alleys and deals gone wrong. It’s a smell I’d rather forget."

Daily Reflection - Saturday, April 26th
Today I got close to 6 hours of sleep. At 10:00am I walked down to De Neve Turnaround to get picked up to go to ACA’s alumni dim sum at Five Star Seafood Restaurant in Alhambra. I ended up eating a ton of har gow, shumai, roasted duck, and honey walnut shrimp! I also got to talk with a lot of the alumni there which was really nice as I got to learn a lot about their experiences in ACA. After that I went to Wushiland and ended up getting a oolong tea latte which was pretty decent. At 4:00pm I went to The Study to get some work done and at 5:30pm, I went to Bfit to exercise and ended up running into my friend Jim. After that I went back to The Study to get some work done. At 8:00pm I went to get pad thai at 8E8 Thai Street Food. AT 10:00pm, I'm planning to hang with some friends and do some studying together for LS7C. Today was pretty relaxing and I hope I can enjoy another relaxing day tomorrow before having to go to classes again. Overall, I would rate today a 9/10.

2. Peking Duck

This famous dish from Beijing is known for its crispy skin and succulent meat, traditionally served with thin pancakes, scallions, and hoisin sauce. Peking duck has been served to emperors for centuries and is now a delicacy enjoyed in high-end restaurants worldwide.
3. Sweet and Sour Pork

This vibrant dish, characterized by its balance of sweet and tangy flavors, has been embraced internationally. Originally from Cantonese cuisine, sweet and sour pork consists of crispy fried pork chunks coated in a glossy, flavorful sauce made of vinegar, sugar, and ketchup.
4. Kung Pao Chicken

A Sichuan classic, kung pao chicken is a spicy, nutty dish made with diced chicken, peanuts, and dried chili peppers. The combination of heat and crunch has made it a popular choice in Chinese restaurants worldwide, often with regional variations.
5. Hot Pot

This communal dining experience, originating from Northern China, involves cooking a variety of meats, seafood, and vegetables in a simmering broth at the table. Hot pot has gained immense popularity, with variations appearing in different countries, incorporating local ingredients and flavors.
6. Chow Mein

Stir-fried noodles with vegetables, meat, or seafood, chow mein is one of the most widely recognized Chinese dishes. The dish’s adaptability has allowed it to take on different forms across cultures, making it a staple in Chinese takeout menus worldwide.

A fiery and flavorful Sichuan dish, mapo tofu consists of soft tofu cubes simmered in a spicy, numbing sauce made with fermented black beans, chili paste, and ground pork. It has become a beloved dish among spice lovers globally.
8. Spring Rolls

These crispy, golden rolls filled with vegetables, meat, or seafood are a staple appetizer in Chinese cuisine. Originally enjoyed during festivals, spring rolls have now become popular in many countries, often appearing on Asian restaurant menus.
9. Fried Rice

Whether it’s Yangzhou fried rice, egg fried rice, or customized variations with different proteins and seasonings, this dish is a global comfort food.
10. Sichuan Hot and Sour Soup
