Честита Баба Марта!

Who knows what are the exact origins of this tradition... The fact is where there are Bulgarians, you can see it. If today you see someone wearing red and white threads as a bracelet or somewhere on their clothes, with or without any additional decorations on them, chances are, this person is from one very specific place. There are other countries or more like areas where this is a tradition. All of them are around Bulgaria. The meaning... is a blur. In general, almost all of our traditions are connected to the hope of good health. It sounds sensible - without it, nothing matters that much anyway.

In general, we buy martenitsa to give it away to our closest people. This is a wish for good health and fertility throughout the year. We make knots and tie into them our deepest wishes, silently, hoping that carrying that simple magic will bring us what we need, that somehow a good thought, a good wish will help us get there. Or simply will bring us a smile and a bit of warmth when the sun is still not enough. The Martenitsa represents the awakening of nature, the beginning of spring and new life.

The two threads, woven around each other represent female and male beginning. White is for the male energy, and red is for the female. Together they would bring a new life. An obvious metaphor carried through generations. One of the most beloved rituals here... not connected to any religion, at least as far as I know.

Вчерашните ми мартеници
