This little vise is my new and very useful helper. For many years now I’ve been making our traditional Bulgarian martenitsas in the way my grandmother had taught me. The process brings me good memories ☺️

So, in Bulgaria, there's this tradition of wearing white and red bracelets at the start of March, called мартеница. I'm not 100% sure what the rules are but it's supposed to be a good luck/health symbol? You take it off and hang it on the first (non-evergreen) plant with green that you see as a way to mark the end of winter. (Disclaimer I have never lived in Bulgaria this is what I've gathered from speaking with my family, there are probably elements here that I got wrong or missing).

But we now live somewhere where it doesn't freeze, so it's always green. So our family has adapted the tradition to just wearing the bracelets starting the first of March and wearing them for the entire month. Again, this is supposed to be a symbol of good luck and good health.

So you can imagine my horror this morning when we finally get to put ours on (we missed the beginning of March due to being super super sick) and it immediately falls off Right As Soon as we sit down in first period.

I'm not a very superstitious person, but damn does that feel like an omen.

Намерих това клонче стъпкано на пътеката в снега и ми се стори много красиво. Само го поукрасих мъничко като за празника. Честит първи март!

There is a Bulgarian tradition for 1st of March. We make and wear brooches and bracelets from white and red wool called “martenitsi”. Today I found this beautiful branch in the snow covered in some dirt. Made a photo and added a little bit of today’s spirit to it. :)
