Мне приснился tiktok.exe или типа того. При том, что я не смотрю тикток. Я думал об этом буквально один раз вчера, когда сестра удивилась, что я знаю какую-то песню.

Это была версия тиктока, но только со странными жуткими видео. Например, врач захлопывает двери скорой помощи, дважды (у машины было как бы 2 слоя...) и уезжает, с подписью "What's going on???" "What's going on???" Well, God really knows (щас не особо страшно, но ночью, под этот звук_для_жутких_видео.mp3 я готов сраться с чего угодно)

А ещё была на волне популярности супер-страшная хоррор игра «Одинокое». Я не хочу знать, существует ли она. В комментариях кто-то сказал, что ты там "дёргаешься от каждого ветерка". Почему я в неё играл, я тоже не знаю. Помню только то, что слышал громкий топот босых ног, и продолжал его слышать ещё 10 секунд после пробуждения.

И мне это приснилось после того, как я наконец-то уснул в 5 утра...

2025 Translation Tuesday Entry - 10/52 Title: Ни слова о любви (Not a Word About Love) Artist: Круг (Krug) Album: Круг Друзей (Circle of Friends, 1986)

I tried to make this week's commentary short and sweet, as this band's tenure turned out to be, but such things never quite work out how you imagine. 🤪

It's so strange - Круг (Krug, 'Circle') were superstars in the early 1980s, putting out hit after hit, but I have found it surprisingly difficult in 2025 to find detailed information about them online. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, maybe it's because their discography is small. Maybe it's because they earned their fame mostly through live concerts, periods of which were constantly interrupted while they were together; they were a bit of a 'you had to be there' kind of deal, but through no fault of their own.

Dates, dates, dates. Круг sped through them like nobody's business. They were established in April 1981 as a ВИА. There were four members: Mikhail Fainzilberg, Igor Sarukhanov, Alexander Slizunov, and Vladimir Vasiliev. Their first and greatest hit was in 1982, with 'Каракум' ('Karakum', named after the desert), and that same year they were caught up in a mass music-group disbandment order from the Department of Culture in Moscow which prevented them from working together until partway into 1983. They had three albums, Маски-маскарад (Maski-Masquerade, 1983, magnetic tape), and two official Melodiya releases: Круг друзей (Circle of Friends, 1986) and Дорога (Road, 1988). Sarukhanov and Slizunov would depart for other pastures in 1985, ending the original line-up, and after Дорога the group split permanently due to creative differences.

A speedrun. It took Круг seven years from establishment to total disbandment, but functionally, they were only active for about five years in total. Their discography amounts to about thirty songs, maybe half of which were permitted to be released in the USSR; the songs of Круг друзей actually date to between 1982-83, but were held back from release due to the aforementioned order until three years later. Had they not been targeted by the authorities, been allowed to perform more, or (and I'll come back to this in the future) had they come to an agreement about where and when they ought to be credited for their music, they might not have gone before their time.

Yet in that short time, they made one of those rare albums in which every single track is a banger. It was a real struggle choosing which one to translate for this week's showcase, because honestly, I would recommend every track on Круг Друзей (1986). The titular track ('Circle of Friends') is about an evening spent with beloved friends, and 'Ни слова о любви' and 'Каракум' have already been mentioned; 'Музыкант' ('Musician') is about the philosophy of playing music to and for others, 'Африка' ('Africa') praises the beauty of Africa's landscapes, and 'Ты Сказала: "Поверь..."' ('You said: "Believe..."') is a gentle farewell song.

Their lyricism is astonishing and the instrumentation superb, as they were already professional musicians by the time they formed this ensemble. Even in 2025 I don't think that Круг's work feels that dated - I especially think you would like their songs if you enjoyed the Japanese city-pop revival some years ago. Songs like 'Ни слова о любви' and the earlier 'Где и Когда' have a very similar feel to that, both lyrically and musically.

That sort of sound was new to the music scene in the USSR. Especially in the context of ВИА groups, whom I previously mentioned were quite set in their style and thus slower to adapt to change. For just one example, give Week 6's 'Три аккорда' a listen: that's a very typical song for a popular ВИА of that time, it came out the same year as Круг друзей was being produced, and it sounds nothing like what Круг was doing.

This, my friends, was a problem. More than you think it might've been. I will be exploring this topic further next week with another band caught up in the disbandment order, the primary target even, and hopefully shed a light on some of the reasons behind this chaos.
