Who lived in my head rent free the most? Who elevated my heart, body, and soul to new heights in such a way that had me totally enamored? Or just pure tism?
It is time for ....
Character of The Year! 2024 Edition.
Out with PEACH FUZZ, and in with MOCHA bed sheets! (according to PANTONE).
If you place top 5, you get to sleep in on New Years!
1ST: V1 ULTRAKILL (AGAIN!!!). His obsession with me knows no bounds ... in fact, it has only INTENSIFIED! He remains as my Possessor, encapsulating my heart and will within his strong metallic arms. I truly adore you, V-kun ...
2ND: DR. KEL. Who ever knew that learning of that new game my friend started playing in 2023 would end up holding the secret 5th Spouse? Kel would have won first place if it weren't for the obsessive V1, because he sure did occupy my head for a good majority of the year. I want to protect you, my beloved Astronomer. ♥
3RD: V2 ULTRAKILL. Speaking of war machines! A NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHES! He has desired for my attention since the indoctrination in 2023, and it wasn't until towards the end of 2024 that I realize just how much V2 loved me, and how much I want to give him love, too ... People seem to enjoy dunking on him a little too much. I am his 'Toy", full of love and warm kisses for him to feel on good days or bad days. ♥ He wants to beat V1's ass so bad!! Some interesting Paracosm developments surround him as well.
RUNNER'S UP: SUSANNE. OHOHOHO, one of my own characters?? I had nearly forgotten what it felt like to be 'tistic for a character I made since 2019. Susanne brings a grown magical girl touch to gun slinging and is on the hunt for V1, making for some FANTASTIC dream sequences of them fighting I see every so often! I just love the OG Silent Hill games in general, along with the nurses. Expect her more in the future!!
HONORABLE MENTION: MIRAGE ULTRAKILL. Another surprise challenger! I originally had like, ZERO interest in Mirage (and a bit of V2). but with the help of a certain grey skeleton friend, suddenly she had both a Paracosm allure, and a girlfriend energy that has since developed into the first ever female Spouse ....! Her and V2 are also together in my Paracosm, but they both share me and wish to help free me from the clutches of the anomalous, powerful V1.

Uhhh me explaining the thought behind every iteration of the freedom motif i've made in all of my secret bosses fight themes because uhhhhh anyways
West Fallin' Apart: This might be the most complicated of all. At first, when i made the original version of WFA (A FRIEND INSIDE ME), the main thought behind it was to simply making it sound nostalgic, yet somehow... Adventurous, in a way. When making WFA V2, that was still the case, however, i also wanted to evoke a new feeling within this new iteration. The feeling of a last goodbye. Saying goodbye to a good friend of yours, while mixed with enough "craziness" to also somehow make you feel like something isn't right. Yet, no matter how the fight ends, and no matter the way you decide to progress within it, you will never see Woostern ever again, and Woostern will never get to see Kriss, or Azzy ever again either.
Blasted Away: This might be the easisest one to explain lol. It's just meant to be absolute insanity. Bonslick throughout the fight just becomes more and more reckless, bashing into things, destroying anything that gets in his way, beating the absolute shxt out of the battle box and stuff, pretty crazy if i say so myself. Also, an official concept of Bonslick's fight has never been existed (and never will), but i always imagined Bonslick running at full speed at the fun gang while they run away, somehow, so i also wanted to incorporate the feeling of being chased, with the break drum samples and stuff.
The Chiller Melodies: Actually, THIS one might be the easiest one to explain. To make it short for you, Left-E was made with the intent to be a FNAF reference, so the freedom motif portion of their battle theme is uhhh prety much based of off FNAF 1' song by The Living Tombstone, the chorus specifically. To this day, i still don't know if i succeded at this, but eh, i'm still comfortable with how it came out.
Our Last Performance: This one was quite interesting. I'll be honest, to this day, OLP might be the track i've ever struggled the most when coming up with the idea of what it would even sound like, that included the freedom motif. So the first thing i made was the freedom motif, first i played it on the piano (my pc keyboard lol) and then i transcribed it the usual way on the piano roll. That's when i realized, how... Unusually happy it was. Not insane in the way TWR sounded like, but just kind of... Sincere. Happy. Celebrating. It was perfect for Sonatta. A celebration, for you, since you're finally gonna be "free". Along with including the Lost Girl/findher motifs, adding a sense of familiarity in it or at least trying to. Fair to say, OLP was quite the success in that aspect, i think.
Another Dirty Quiller: This one is definitely the weirdest. I also struggled a lot with this one, though not as much as i struggled with OLP, even though out of all of them, ADQ might be the boss theme i'm less proud of. The feeling i wanted to evoke with ADQ in general, including the freedom motif was... Punishment. Judgement. Horrible. Anomalous... An amalgamate, you could say. The feeling of wanting to run away... Yet no matter where you run off to, all of your your actions, after everything you did, no matter what... Your SINS will always follow you.
Night of The Shinigami: This one might also be a lil' hard to explain. You see, knowing how monstrously strong Shikari is, i could've made an absolutely insane freedom motif, pull out the electric guitars and everything. But i didn't, instead of that, i made it sound... calm, in fact, the freedom motif is the most calm portion of the whole theme. Why? Well, this isn't just a fight between you and a really strong opponent, it's the fight that decides who gets to live when the end of the world finally comes. The strongest darkner Vs. The strongest lightner. You have to stay calm, despite how frenetic this battle may be. Concentrate. The smallest of errors will mean your downfall. That applies for Shikari as well. You're no common opponent for her either. This is the most important battle of your life.
Take Back The Dead: Despair. Fear. Loneliness. Horror. All of these are what i had in mind when composing TBTD. Not only is Sakriss in pain during the whole fight, but Kris is as well. You will look up at the moon and for a second you may believe it was watching you, you may see hands reaching for you rising from the ground. The wind is howling, but there is no wind to breath here. On this scenario, you're forcing two individuals to engage in a fight they don't want to have, without even knowing it. Just by existing, you cursed them.
And that's it byeee.

oooh okay, for the ask game: what kind of music do your OCs listen to?
i know you have. a lot so. whoever has the strongest music preferences/vibes. but also Shi specifically (i think that's how you spell her name?)
yayyyyyy thank you! here's every OC that has character songs
but, to answer for Shi specifically, they can't conceptualize audio input very well so everything sounds like it's under a layer of this at 1.75 speed at all times (because they are all times. always)

Reading+Listening(+Watching) Log 2024.10 - October
Previous: Reading+Listening Log 2024.09 - September
Just look at that cover. It's breathtaking. (And the chapters that are going to be in there had me gulp twice.) Coming out November 20th 2024!
——————————————————————————
Reading languages: German, English, French, Japanese, not listing which was what. (There’s also been some feeble attempts at Chinese, but that was more music.)
Titles are as I’ve read them either first or most and thus remember it for that title mostly
Not going to bother putting in the original titles of translated reads unless there is something worthy of note to it
Cursive titles have been completed
If it says a volume number, it may mean it has been finished or is still in progress
Some notes’ content may be subject to repetition here and there, as I also copied some older notes from casual conversations over and didn’t go through any rounds of cutting things down.

October
A fairly short month this time.
I completely fell off reading anything from Manga Apps again…
I wholly expected this month to be as good as a pure Kemutai Hanashi month for several reasons, and I did sit before it, some of it, all of it, a good deal of it, but still somehow I didn't quite get on to finish that plan. The reason could be best described as 'trepidation'. Like you know it is great, it's going to hit somewhere in between hard, home, compf and wholesome and then go on to inspire something new, unknown, hopeful, maybe. And the prospect was suddenly weirdly daunting in a way, which I noticed this month as being the same reason, I let even a number of those pixiv chapters that were behind comicnettai pile up. I think that's probably because all the reservations I held over this series have fallen off. I still remember how I started the series and knew immediately it was very good and beautiful, but also there was a vague, but persistent veil of skepticism. Because. It's just too good to be true, is it? Turns out, it actually is indeed true. Ever after that bomb-like chapter 12 dropped, I felt like this was one of those titles that, had it existed earlier, had I known it earlier, could have been a game changer to some of the turns my life have taken in the past. Turns out, it's probably still going to have this sort of role anyway in some other ways looking forward. Which is to say, I am really quite looking forward to things coming.
No (classfied) this month. Actually, I've been missing it a bit, as I wound up quite liking it...

Notes:
Kemutai Hanashi ch1-4, reading and re-reading snippets all over the place in between up to ch31: Chapter 30/31 sorts of kinda hit home, with how Arita is stuck with mulling over the question of "what would it change" and finding the answer, that... really doesn't solve anything, but still feels like a bucket of cold water thrown over. I had an episode of that in 2022 myself, (my version that question was pretty much an alternate translation of Arita's question, "What diffrence would it make?"), and after a few weeks to month brooding over it the answer was the same: What a dumb question. Of course it'd make a difference. A whole world's worth of it. And maybe at the same time it doesn't really. (For now anyway, however long "now" will last.) Now 2022 really isn't that long ago, and this series has even existed by then and I was even reading it, but darn did I wondern what would have been, if it had started serializing a bit more early.
I asked a stupid question. "What would it change" Of course it would change things. Other than that I begun my (very throughout) 're-read' up to ch4. And I did already know this series was very scenic and doing a lot of still life scenes that just showed literal slices of their life. But I think on my first read I completely underestimated just how much it was. Actually it's more like almost cinematic with all the little details that are just shown, the many little sounds that are there here and there at the sides, especially many of those still scenes with no dialogue. It may be still scenes and moments, but it's definitely not actually 'still' and in unmoving or still as in quiet or inanimate. It gives just a clear air of where they are living (and the series is very much certainly very Japanese in all those details.)
A Certain Magical Index NT v1: There is no Touma in this volume so far and that makes it (unsurprisingly) far more insteresting. Pretty much because it means there is no Index in action there. (She is quite obnoxious to me...) Hamazura himself is rather pathethic, but when it counts he quite shines with a strengh that has no foundation in any sort of OP-power trump card. Wverything around him tends to be far more interesting due to everything happening because things are interconnected and not because of some underdog special power. Accelerator by now is also much more like Mikasa, as in knows his high level powers, has some brains and sticks his nose into whatever he deems necessariy, but still knows his limits. While Mikasa is more limited in maturity, Accelerator's are more immediately tangible. (Plus he has no teleporting fangirl at his side.) The whole thing around this really varied (downright nuts) found family is also fairly compf. Maybe, finally, Index as a series is coming to a point to having the same strength of Railgun. (Index always struck me having more interesting cards in terms of all the wordbuilding, while Railgun was much more character driven, but the plotlines themselves tended to be somewhat not too exiting.)
I Met You After the End of the World v3: Oh well. That ending. Came sudden. And the situation is somewhat back to square one at where the volume began. Also a grave now popped out, but still no actual corpse or mention thereof, so who knows what is what. I'll say I am curious how it'll go on, and v4 is on the horizon soon, so probaly not long until finding out.
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? v10: It is a slog. A slooooog. 1/3 still to go. I am really tempted to just skip it, given I read v11 already anyway…
Sasaki & Peeps v1: Euh. This was. A slog to the end. Many plotlines, not really interconnecting much, the magical girl remains not enticing and the neighbour girl's questionable ideas only got much worse by the end. Maybe I'll continue it, if the vols just somehow drop into my hands, but in no hurry whatsoever.
The Apothecary Diaries v3: Maomao remains impressive, as in, she wholly can recognize how mind blowingly beautiful Jinshi apparantely is, can even loose a breather or two about it, and really not manage to not mention it, but other than that. It does nothing of relevance onto her. (Which together with previous comments still give me a whole aroace vibed air about her.) Nevertheless, there is a sort of connection building up between her and the folks around here. She does have a trusted place in the crowd and it's wholly earned by herself. Her torments are also funny to follow. Those poor mushrooms, indeed. Still have to finish the volume and see how the singular cases connect to each other. They were a bit fragmented, but this time also heavily lampshaded from the beginning to have something more overarching hanging over them.
The Boy Who Ruled the Monsters V1p1-6: Oh, it's another unfairly kicked out of the adventurer's party plot. Then it was followed by an Oh, it's another slave girl story. Eh. Do I even want to continue? Dunno, maybe someday.
The Isolator v5: So, it's been a few years I read v4. There were some more hints in this volume that sounded like buildups for later reveals and there's this whole new subplot around Stargazer. But really, the most eyecatching thing is that Liquidizer very much quite rocks. And the afterword's mention of that she'll be sticking around as a recurring character is promising. Not promising is the entire lack of a sign for a v6 however. ._.
Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop: This was a weird read, something about it felt okayish narratively, but also strangely… shallow? Somehow lacking flourish. Maybe it's because, as the afterword states, this is an adaption of the anime movie? I don't know. As for the content it just really is. so. puberty. teenagers. Resonance or value seriously zero, as I never had any such experience like that.
You Like Me, Not My Daughter?! v1: The title definiely is clickbait. Not that it is wrong per se, but it very very fast lets the cat out of the sack, so that misunderstanding doesn't even really get past half a single chapter. But I was pleasantly surprised that Taku is actually an adult there and a colleage student, so there isn't that sorta iffyness Are You Okay with a Slightly Older Girlfriend? has. (Where it's like the guy is totally his age as in teeeenaaaagerrrr and the girl is kinda…. an extreme late or maybe even no bloomer in terms of mental maturity.) Everyone already feels surprisingly mature and down to earth, even Miu, the actual teenager character.
An Archdemon's Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride ch64-65: Chastille, Chastille. Oh Chastille… Way to dig your grave.
Beastars v19-22: And to the series finished pile it goes. I think the series has lost me. Well not so much the content, but really…… what is it even trying to say? So many hoops, indeed actually interesting themes and whatnot, but in the end it doesn't feel like much has happened. (Especially not around the Beastars significance.) I will give it though, that this is one of the rarer series, where it starts in school and goes beyond to feature them growing out of it and as adults. It makes up about or slightly more than a third, which is kind of a lot of screentime. And this was funny, about lossing your wits over a disgruntled bun.
Burberry x Blue Period: This. uh. was okay? Maybe it'd be better if I actually read the main series. (Still stuck at v1.) Will maybe revisit later again.
Dead Mount Death Play v8: The volumes are pretty thick, but the plot still feels like progressing somewhat slow.
Domestic na Kanojo v21-23: Haaa. v21: As usual Hina is born to suffer. And just when you kinda feel bad about her, it does on to... v22: Oh Hina. Hina. Can you… just stop being so… @_@" And then we go off to another side quest to Natsuo's author senpai/mentor, and well, it's okay? But whyever does Natsuo have to get a crisis now.... v23: Unsprisingly that just feeds in more drama and Rui does probably the only good thing for her own mental health, put a line down. Too bad Natsuo himself is terrible with that (also, Hina where are you, why do you keep missing your best timing chances??) and so a new girl shows up. With... problems. A whole bunch of them... So are we gettign some Yakuza action now?
Dr. Stone v9, v23-27, v3, v10: Finshed that one now, and kinda all over the place with the gaps and filling them. But the last few volumes were definitely more interesting than the beginning. Probably not least because not so much annoying Taiju and Ryu has grown up. I think I quite am on board with it's concept. It's educational, while not forgetting to tell a plot that's for entertainment and the coolness factor to attact younger readers. There is never harm to charm people into the wonders of science. But darn is the beginning a read that requires patience, because everyone's so annoying. The ending with the time machine is even more of a stretch than the series is anyway, but it does feel like it does tie the string with Byakuya. It always felt somewhat off with that scene of him dying in the river full of sorrow and regret, despite everything else being rather hopeful and plot amory-they manage everything. In the end, they even pulled this teary emotional scene about that Whyman.
Flüster mir eine Liebeslied v2, v6-8: Ok. I will say the art is pretty. And those later volumes after the gap jump are ever so more enticing than the first volume manages to be. I always thought this was completely unlike Given, in tone, vibes and everything, but there is two things they have in common aside the band thing: Everyone's in pain and somehow just about everyone is revealed to be gay/lesbian. Just what are the odds of so many assembling in one place so coincidentially?
Fuwafuwa Therapist ch1-3, ch12, ch11: MC gets diagnosed with 'fluff illness' and gets send to 'fluff therapy' with a 'fluff specialist'…. who turns out to be a very uncannily propotioned bunny that can transform into a bunny-man. Soon it is revealed, he got sick with this illness because his rabbit (an actual rabbit-rabbit) he's been living together with for 10 years has died. Now there's been a bit too big of a gap to see the progression, but I definitely was checking the tags again for any BL tag in ch12. But anyway. While this doesn't have be hooked I subscribe to the premise. It's a bit like Hari to Hitsuji no Fune, but instead of a needlework course, you get a fluff therapy. Like. Right. I want to have a fluff therapy by a cute bun myself (without the rabbit death trigger tho). Just please an actually cute one, because this
is not convincingly looking like a fluff bun whatsoever.
Hana to Kurage to Refrain ch1: This is looking like a compfy series with a bittersweet tinge to it. Curious how it will go on. It definitely does a good job of feeling animated though its art.
MC Kafuu is also very much a scaredy cat mood.
That's whole gradient right there.
Knitter's High ch31.1-3: I am somewhat amazed this series is so long and I'm sure 90% of it won't stay in my memory (actually more than half has already vanished). But it's probably reaching an end soon. School is ending after all. The ending note about feeling somewhat forlorn kinda looked pretty nice.
Koisuru (Otome) no Tsukurikata ch88: So after a cheese death it goes on to be compf and fluff, but then he worries about essential cheese deaths again.
Following them I really just circle back to what Yoimachi said about watching them and it's pretty on point to the sentiments I have watching those two. That being said. It's been a while with Yoimachi last showing up, I'd love to see more of her again, too.
Liebe ist (k)ein Wettkampf v3, v5: This is really…. not good. Way too much macho and rotten cheese nonsense.
Loop 7-kaime no Akuyaku Reijou wa, Moto Tekikoku de Jiyuu Kimama na Hanayome Seikatsu wo Mankitsusuru ch35:
Cat version of the grand jump of chapter 1? Still cool.
And darn is this hairdo pretty!!
Moriarty the Patriot v2: This was an accidential re-read I only noticed near the end of the volume. Ha. Ha. Brain? I did not permit vacation for you.
Mr. Mallow Blue ch32: Yikes. Yume is just yikes. That flashback of why she became Sakura's enemy is already yikes, but it's getting worse… Sakura already is one that gives off the impression that she direly needs some therapy to sort out her issues, but Yume is way way worse. Meanwhile at Aoi's camp:
Cute-compf by a supportive character probably just is the best medicine, if somehow professional help doesn't exist.
Shinigami no Hanayome - Yomei 7-nichi kara no Koufuku ch1-3: The cover is eyecatching. And that way of dying does supply a sorts of morbid, but beautiful imagery material. Her half-insane, but also kinda alluring smile only adds to it. That being said the plot seems to be a bit on the more edgy side, but it leaves that premise behind fairly soon already. Curious what will come now. Too bad it's probably going to be without the flowers, through.
Sonna Kazoku nara Sutechaeba? ch79-81: Euh. Okay. The teacher's detective arc is over apparantely? Or is it postponed? Anyway, the conclusion gotten is uh. Anticlimatic? Or beside the point, but still not very comfortable. Meanwhile it's going back to the family issues. Which really come back to that every single one of them are terrible communicators.
But it's definitely more lighthearted overall now with these little cute titbits inbetween.
Silent Lover ch196-204(S2ch54-62): This is completely ludicrous now and that prince deserves some serious slaps. The complete absence his birth father and the other adoptive father of the other MC is still puzzlingly suspicious. Maybe there will be a twist about, oh they knew about the illness so went to a trip to call upon that old royal dynasty's advanced wisdom to get a cure?
On Movie Recaps/Essays: The new category here... Recently Youtube has thrown me a number of movie recaps or film analysis video essays over, but this month probably for the first time, these was one that had a lasting impression and so I decided to list some of those titles off as well.
Raise the Red Latern: I've not watched the movie. Also I don't think I want to now. It's terribly uncomfortable. But what footage I did see went all across the whole movie and it definitely is a whole piece of art. Also adressing something you always see in royal court harem dramas, but here it's "just" a rich man and commoner mistresses. Yet the same sort of system applies and if court harems always do come off a bit like power hungry, here there are also power games, but it's looking more purely just desperate. The ending is also just really really gloom.
Moon Man: So, it's a bit of The Martian at first, except the premise happens because the guy is a cheese stricken idiot. Then it goes cringe, and then……… a kangaroo appears, when it has a few Wandering Earth vibes and the ending is also sounding like the same sort of Amageddon inspired heroic sacrifice blockbuster. Except it's also a comedy. Probably mostly a comedy. I'm not sure what to make of it. (Or if I actually want to watch the whole thing.)
Music/Music Videos: The second half of Septemer's playlist moved over, but somehow all that Three Body Problem/Wandering Earth part fizzled off somewhat soon. Diffrent Kind of Beautiful stuck around for a while, until it it lost effect and then I put the randomizer up again for a bunch of days. That had me hit upon Isolated and which then had me pull out some other redrose tracks again. (I've always liked serene moments, somehow it always makes me have a sort of Mono no Aware moment.) Isolation and A World Gone Blue otherwise were mainly the tracks that accompanied my Kemutai Hanashi trip (serene moment's previous associations kind of never managed to peel off and get dyed in this) and Held on a Thread was just forgotten to be taken out again. That's always been something of a "theme track" of a large middle portion of Higurashi ga Naku Koro ni for me, which ironically is probably as far off away from Kemutai Hanashi as it gets. Isolation and A World Gone Blue were also subjects to some habitual severe lyrics mishearing yet again. I'm not sure how I got "Undefined, sick and tired" out of "Can I say goodnight" (I was already going Hnnngh, another gloom song about sleepless nights??), but there we go… Same for A World in Blue, I misheard "poignant" as "pungent" and that paired with the "I didn't question it" tained the whole song with me thinking, oh no, not again another toxic relationship one. Turns out Isolation is indeed about sleepless nights, but there is a sort of determination in there to get through it all and A World in Blue doesn't actually have a trace of toxidity in it after all. (Altho it's still a bit gloom, because clearly it's mourning the absense of another person.) But Pfeeew. A half break from my curse of either finding cheese or questionable lyrics songs. That's nice.

Kamen Rider Geats Finale Commemoration Producers’ Symposium: Translation (V2 Part 1)
in october i did my first kamen rider translation, with the over 10,000-word-long roundtable discussion ebook for kamen rider geats. i’ve improved at translating text a lot since then, so here’s an updated version, fixing many inaccuracies and issues.
it’s also split up into 3 parts because holy shit it’s long
part 1 (HERE) | part 2 | part 3
i originally did geats’ symposium first because it’s already been graciously transcribed and posted by other people (with a few typos)— you can find that transcription of the original japanese text here.
TOKU TRANSLATION MASTERPOST HERE
this translation was done for a few projects of mine. join the henshindex wiki today!
The fourth Reiwa entry in the Kamen Rider series, “Kamen Rider Geats”, finished broadcasting all 49 episodes on August 27th. A new program, “Kamen Rider Gotchard”, will start in September, but there are certainly many people that still want to immerse themselves in Geats’s world. So, this work will have a “Toei Producers Special Round-table Discussion” delivered like the works before it. It actually became over 25,000 words long, but please read through it once.
Attendees
Naomi Takebe (Chief Producer) Joined the Kamen Rider series as a producer starting with “Kamen Rider Agito” (2001). She was the Chief Producer for “Kamen Rider Kiva” (2008), “Kamen Rider OOO” (2011), “Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters” (2012), “Kamen Rider Gaim” (2013), and “Shuriken Sentai Ninninger” (2015), among others. Additionally, she is in charge of many other works, including the Toei movie-stage “The Shinigami Incident” (2020, 2022).
Minami Takishima (Assistant Producer) Joined Toei by qualifying for the “Tokusatsu Program Producer Recruitment”. Was an assistant producer for the works “Mashin Sentai Kiramager” (2020), and “Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger” (2021).
Fumiki Yoshikawa (Assistant Producer) “Geats” is the first work he has been responsible for as an assistant producer. His personal history prior to entering Toei will be discussed in this round-table symposium.
State of Mind I: Reaching the End of the TV Series
TTFC: First of all, a few days prior to this interview, the “Kamen Rider Geats” TV series finished filming the last episode, the first screening of it ended, and now there’s nothing left to do but air it. So truly, your work is finished. I would like to hear your present state of mind…
Takebe: The filming itself was finished at the end of June this year.
Yoshikawa: We were filming for exactly one year.
Takebe: Fortunately, nobody in the cast was ever infected with COVID. I’m certainly happy that we followed the planned schedule perfectly until the end. With filming always wrapping up about 6 episodes before broadcasting, the script was being made around 10 episodes ahead. This is thanks to the help of our brilliant staff.
Takishima: As the filming progressed smoothly, even though we thought we were going well ahead of the broadcast, there were several times where the script had to be hastily finished on the filming location. (Laughs)
Takebe: It’s because this year, we made Yu (Yuya Takahashi) write it all by himself. I think that was difficult. However, thanks to our hard work, it’s now calming down a bit. We make everyone in the cast work the summer movie campaign and such, and now we’re moving on to preparations for the “Final Stage” being hosted from September to October. How about you two? It’s your first time being involved with the Kamen Rider series, Takishima, and Geats is the first work you’ve been a producer for, Yoshikawa.
Takishima: By now, the only thing I have to say is “It was fun”. Anyhow, even though you’ll mess up a few times while working on any project, at the end it’ll always total to happy memories. (Laughs)
Takebe: Really? I thought it was fairly exhausting work, but you’re not complaining about it? (Laughs)
Takishima: What was frantic was frantic, but it was because we did everything we wanted to do, as we should have. The question, “Please talk about what you regret not doing!” was also written in this interview’s proposal, but I don’t think I have many regrets…
Takebe: However, do you feel a sense of freedom now?
Takishima: I do. (Laughs) We’ve finished broadcasting up to the final episode; that’s big. And then the movie was successfully released to positive reception, so at any rate I’m feeling relieved.
Takebe: Right now is the time when there is exactly no filming and no work. For the first time in a year (Laughs).
Takishima: Personally, I’m beginning preparations for a separate work, but I was able to take a long break the other day.
Takebe: I rested a little bit too.
Yoshikawa: No one got sick while “Geats” was being filmed. I don’t think that “illness comes from the mind”, but there might have been some points where we survived with fighting spirit.
Takebe: How was it for you, Yoshikawa?
Yoshikawa: I entered Toei because I wanted to be a part of the Kamen Rider series, but I really didn’t know anything about making television shows at the start. So I’ve just been learning over the past year. I think that I myself was able to grow alongside everyone in this particularly young cast because I was very involved with them while working. I started crying when I called for them to wrap up because I’ve had that kind of year. I think that no matter what works I’ll be in after this, I’ll definitely remember “Kamen Rider Geats” my whole life. I believe that “Geats’” toys are very precious to me as well.
Takebe: By the way, should we talk about your personal history, Yoshikawa? Truthfully, I’ve already met you prior to you entering Toei; we’ve worked together.
Yoshikawa: That’s right. I met Ms. Takebe during “OOO, Den-O, All Riders: Let’s Go Kamen Riders” (2011) and she helped me. I was playing as a child actor, but because my dream of being in the Kamen Rider series had come true, I quit too early. After that, I became the age to start looking for a job, and I thought I’d go overseas at that time, but at that exact moment, the world encountered the COVID-19 pandemic… While I wondered what I should do now, I thought about how there hadn’t been a person credited under both cast and staff in Kamen Rider works, since I still liked the franchise. With that, I became determined to join Toei.
Takebe: You’d also met the assistant director (Junpei) Shiokawa a while back, right?
Yoshikawa: I did meet him. After that, I met (Soichiro) Hiragane too. When I was in “Tomica Hero Rescue Force” (2008)’s Shiokawa episodes (episode 47, “Save the Busy Rei Parent and Child’s Bond”), the VE was Hiragane. [TN: i don’t know what this stands for]
Takishima: Speaking of, Hiragane worked on the “GARO” series too, so he was also acquainted with Kokoro Aoshima (who appeared as the heroine Alice Hiromi in 2017’s “ZERO: Dragon Blood”)
Takebe: “Let’s Go Kamen Riders” is nostalgic… (Osamu) Kaneda directed it, right?
Yoshikawa: That’s correct. I remember there was a scene where we jumped down from the Den-Liner, but director Kaneda wasn’t happy with the shots, so it had to be redone about 10 times. Actually, I shouldn’t be spending so much time on my personal stories; let’s move on to a different topic. (Laughs)
State of Mind II: Like a Fox
TTFC: It’s common to be asked for every season, but looking back on the past year, what kind of things went off course from the original plan? What things surpassed your intentions on the production side?
Takebe: First of all, definitely (Hideyoshi) Kan. He literally “took the form” of his character.
Yoshikawa: He quickly became cooler and cooler.
Takebe: I also met Kan at auditions for “Avataro Sentai Donbrothers”, and he left an impression on me. I decided to gamble on him for the role of Ace Ukiyo in “Geats” and see what happened. I wasn’t fully confident either, and I think it was hard on Kan to do things like retake a shot over 20 times in the early days, but he improved more than expected. He started with voiceovers.
Takishima: That’s right, that’s right. In “Kamen Rider Revice’s” summer movie, he first spoke as Geats.
Takebe: I feel like his turning point was in the winter movie (“Kamen Rider Geats x Revice: Movie Battle Royale”).
Yoshikawa: The person himself said so in another interview. His self-awareness changed during the filming of the winter movie, by performing with everyone from the cast of “Revice” and the legends from “Kamen Rider Ryuki”.
Takishima: (Koichi) Sakamoto was filming his 3 episodes (13-15) around the same time, and there was a big change there too.
Takebe: With the actors from past generations too, there’s an impression that Ryoma Takeuchi [Shinnosuke Tomari/Kamen Rider Drive] and others also greatly improved during the winter movies. So I think that it’s definitely good for them to get one big push of encouragement at that time.
Takishima: What I remember well is when we filmed the Blu-Ray bonus video. Volume 1 was released in April, so it was shot just about when the year was coming to an end. For “Quiz Tournament” (recording for Volume 2), we had to gather all the cast members playing supporters too, and Sara’s actor Nene Shida was the host, so doesn’t that make 11 people? That was the first and last time where so many members would meet in the same room. So we took a group photo as well, but Kan was strongly becoming “a man who wants to be able to properly stand in the center”. Of course, since he’s the lead, he had been standing in the center up to that point, but after filming the winter movie and the like, he had an aura of sorts.
Takebe: Something I liked about Kan was that because he played sports into his school days, he was able to get a really solid grip regarding the direction from the supervisors. He showed a positive attitude towards being taught, and from the supervisors’ perspective, we saw that teaching is worthwhile. In the summer movie too, he was challenged by having to perform a variety of roles, but (Shinichiro) Shirakura also felt his development.
Yoshikawa: He said, “He had a certain presence”.
Takebe: So, I miscalculated about Kan… I’m sorry about that. Though I miscalculated in a good way. (Laughs)
Takishima: We were bewitched. (Laughs)
TTFC: From the beginning, we feel Ace was simply established as being “the strongest from the outset”, and had an absolute presence, but we wonder: was that always the aim?
Takebe: Yes. That is, when we were first talking with Yuya Takahashi, he said, “What kind of protagonist do you want to do?”. At the time, it was the beginning of a war, and the pandemic hadn’t settled down yet. In the midst of that situation, I said that I wanted to see a reliable protagonist… one that’s always at the center of the story. Yuya took that and completely realized it. At that time, I said I wanted to do a historical drama. Yuya really liked that direction too, so he said something like “I want to write all the episodes!”. Takishima, is there something you “miscalculated”?
Takishima: It wasn’t a miscalculation as much as it was a needless fear, but when we were deciding which Riders would become various forms, I had a little bit of unease that we were making it too difficult for the audience to tell who was fighting. However, the impact that the masks made was stronger than I thought. I think the simplicity of the designs and molding made a big difference.
Takebe: The fox rider and cat rider weren’t there.
Takishima: An “animal motif”, if you think about it now, is an idea that only surfaced in the second half of the design conference(s). With animals you can tell them apart, so we were able to have a lot of different Riders until we reached the end. I think that was a success.
Takebe: It was natural to need to decide the design and concept of the work’s primary Rider—that is to say, the protagonist Rider—and during the design conference, Shirakura said “If it’s easy to understand, it’s good”. Shirakura left the conference when it was time to decide the primary Rider, but his prediction was correct just as you’d expect from him. I think the person who said “I want us to do the first white Rider since a long time ago” was (Hideki) Tajima from Ishimori Productions.
Takishima: A part of me was uneasy, but when I was called on, what came out was “Oh, it’s okay!”. From there, we proceeded with confidence.
Takebe: I thought the fox and tanuki Rider motif was well accepted (Laughs). The design team and molding team did good work.
State of Mind III: A Colorful Set of Characters
Yoshikawa: I don’t have a “miscalculation” or anything like that either, but Geats didn’t have a person in the “mentor” position throughout the year. Instead, for every chapter, everyone was coming and saying “I can go in this time period”. For example, something like Koji Abe [Morio Koganeya/Kamen Rider Mary] who was only in a few episodes at the start, or staying for half a year like Ryo Kitamura [Niram] and Shiho Harumi [Archimedel]. With everyone who came in, a variety of actors participated in “Geats”, and that was truly great. Moreover, we got actors like Tsubasa Sakiyama [Win Hareruya/KR Punkjack] to come back later on after leaving one time. Shugo Oshinari [Girori] also was gracious enough to come back again at the end. I think this kind of pattern is pretty interesting. So many actors, as well as people with proven track records, helped with “Geats”.
Takebe: Regarding Sakiyama, he starred in a TTFC spin-off as well.
Yoshikawa: Ryuji Sato’s Jitt as well— even though he only appeared for about the last 10 episodes, he left an incredible impression. He was incredibly cool.
Takebe: More than anything, it makes me happy that everyone gladly took part. For such busy actors to take time out of their schedules…
Takishima: I don’t know how many people made do with their schedules for Geats, despite being in other stage performances (Laughs).
Yoshikawa: We get them to come to the film studio by saying things like “The morning of this day is OK!”.
Takishima: Kekera’s (Mitsutoshi) Shundo for example. When he first appeared, it was just his voice, but at the exact same time he was going around the country on stage in “Ganryu-jima”. But when he was still traveling, we had a scene where we really wanted him to appear in person, so we made him come back to Tokyo just for one day. With such circumstances, we had to decide what we’d shoot on which day, and set up the schedule. I think there were many other parts that had trouble on the set too… For actors who were stitching together their schedules with separate dramas, we checked the live schedules for the people who were playing together for one scene, and if they couldn’t appear together on a day, we had to change the scene or negotiate… it’s never-ending (Laughs).
Takebe: But that did result to something, right? Like with Kitamura, action director (Satoshi) Fujita was praising him. In his henshin pose, there was agility in each separate motion, and he always executed it well.
Takishima: For that in particular, what we really tried to convey to them was to make a big impact in one cut. Everyone in the audience doesn’t know which character will appear when as well since Geats is a system where they’re “dropping out” from the beginning, and that part makes it interesting. We on the management side can’t be careless either (Laughs), so that’s why when characters who already left appeared again for the first time in a while, it’s similar to having legend Riders from past shows come back.
Yoshikawa: And “Geats” itself still hasn’t ended, either (Laughs).
Takishima: In that sense, it wasn’t strange to disappear at any time, and yet ultimately, the person who ended up staying until the end was Daichi (Laughs).
Yoshikawa: That may have been the greatest miscalculation of them all (Laughs).
Takebe: He really came in and stirred things up. None of the main Riders, even Michinaga, can fully go to the “evil” side. So an existence like Daichi’s became essential. Of course, if you’re bringing someone in you always have to consult with their schedule, but that feeling of tension worked better than expected. The idea of arranging it into “chapters” was naturally decided on from the very beginning, but once we tried it, we ourselves had fun too (Laughs).
Takishima: Daichi might have been symbolic of that. He was appearing the whole time, but his position changed with each chapter (Laughs).
TTFC: I don’t think anyone in the cast could tell what was going to happen next, either. New characters were introduced when they didn’t expect it.
Yoshikawa: On that topic, when Kan read Fuku (Suzuki, playing Ziin)’s name in the script, he was pretty surprised. “Wait, Fuku!? That Fuku?”
Takebe: Fuku turned down another role for it. We were also surprised to hear that his papers were coming to auditions. However, he didn’t really fit the main character role we were thinking of. But since he went through all that trouble to audition… it only seemed natural.
Takishima: They said that strictly speaking, it was difficult to let him appear from the beginning schedule-wise as well.
Takebe: So he got lucky, and we got lucky too (Laughs).
We’d already decided that whoever played Ziin would be appearing starting in the middle of the show. We said, “Now that you say it, he’s a good fit, isn’t he?”, so the story progressed as planned. But even with that casting, if the papers didn’t come from Fuku’s side, I don’t know if I’d have brought it to him. Even if I thought of him, I would have assumed that surely he’s too busy for it.
Takishima: So, Fuku “has it” after all.
Yoshikawa: When we were recruiting, there was an age limit. For “Geats” we were looking for men aged 18 to 26 years old to play regular characters, and Fuku had just turned 18. It seems like he wanted to apply the first year he could. He said, “I’ve been waiting (for when I was old enough to apply) a long time.”
TTFC: With the position of “Supporter” unique to “Geats”, and moreover those being characters that transform into Kamen Riders themselves, it was already a perfect fit, wasn’t it?
Yoshikawa: After we began filming too, each time he saw a new Rider form or suit on the location, he would say “That’s so cool!”. I don’t know if he was saying it as Ziin or himself (Laughs).
Takishima: While he participated in various other media, he continued to show his love for Kamen Rider. We were glad he was able to appear in the show too.
Takebe: When the episode where he “finally transformed!” released, the celebratory mood from all of the fans was amazing. And his speech when it was time to wrap up recording was moving as well…
Yoshikawa: ‘Isn’t a theme of “Geats” “wishes”? With that kind of show, I’m happy that my wish that I’ve had since I was three came true in this. I wanted to convey the idea that “If you keep wishing for something, it’ll come true someday” through me transforming into Kamen Rider Ziin in “Geats” to kids across the country as well’…
Takishima: It was an amazing speech.
Takebe: Even though acting is his entire career, he started crying the moment he received his flowers. We were deeply moved as well, and cried along with him. After that is Beroba. Right when we were rehearsing the first scene she would appear in, Yuya came to the filming studio…
Yoshikawa: It was the day he came in for a scriptwriting meeting. That ended and I told him that Beroba was coming in, so he stayed and watched the rehearsal.
Takebe: It was probably his first time seeing (Ayaka) Namiki’s visuals and acting, and I wonder if Yuya was inspired by it. If I think about it, I didn’t expect Beroba to survive as long as she did (laughs).
Yoshikawa: Well, he was writing along with us.
Takebe: It turns out that we’d found an incredibly talented person, and Beroba, who I thought wouldn’t make it as far as she did, was portrayed wonderfully. It was another miscalculation (Laughs).
Takishima: She was good from the start, but kept getting better after that.
Takebe: I don’t know if she’ll ever stop improving.
Takishima: She did the homework she brought to the set perfectly (Laughs).
Takebe: I’m not sure if it’s okay to say this, but she took a high school test during filming and passed it with flying colors. She talked about normal things as well—you wouldn’t think she was a 15-16 year old, she was very reliable.
Takishima: She was excellent in giving answers for interviews and the like as well. I think it’s a little because she’s been a “Chao Girl” since elementary school, and had many chances to interact with adults, but I feel like that’s not all it is. I wonder if it’s a talent she had.
Yoshikawa: I first met her when she was auditioning to appear in the role of “Kozue Hayama” in (Teruaki) Sugihara’s episodes 11-12. She didn’t fit Kozue’s role then, but Director Sugihara said that if she kept learning, she’d be good. After that, when it was time to decide who would play Beroba, she was invited again.
TTFC: Beroba’s first appearance was unique in Geats, being in episodes 20-21 which director (Kyohei) Yamaguchi was in charge of.
Yoshikawa: Since Beroba would be a regular cast member, the head director (Shojiro) Nakazawa was there at auditions too. There was a passage in the script that said to “laugh like the devil”, and she performed that with a lot of energy. Because of that, Sugihara, Nakazawa, and Yamaguchi all seemed to decide that she should play Beroba. When Director Sugihara wrote the report later, he did so gladly. He said, “She was pretty good, right?”.
Takebe: Director Yamaguchi was also very particular about Beroba’s clothes. He spent a lot of time on it. It’s because of him that she’s covered from head to toe (Laughs). Including the color compact, and the jelly beans…
Takishima: Actually, it seems like the image that Directors Nakazawa and Yamaguchi had in their heads were a little different. So that was a “stroke of luck” too. I think that maybe if Director Nakazawa was the one filming her first appearance, her clothes would have been different as well. But he left it to Director Yamaguchi.
Takebe: That’s also an interesting part of the Kamen Rider series. Because many directors are involved, a variety of styles mix together.
Yoshikawa: The basic idea of the Supporters was solidified at an early stage. I remember what Ms. Takebe was writing on the whiteboard while everyone was discussing: “I wonder if a girl would be good for Michinaga.”
Takishima: On the topic of Michinaga, something like, “Maybe a person who’s a carpenter?” came up for just a moment, didn’t it?
Takebe: Since Geats, Tycoon, Na-go and Buffa are a group of 4, I was thinking about how to make them not overlap.
Yoshikawa: As a result, Michinaga got a “heinous young woman” attached to him (Laughs). On the topic of girls, I think their ages might have been being decided at the same time.
Takebe: Ziin, Kekera, Kyuun and Beroba are described in words that express emotions. Yu is also good at naming. And the management side’s Girori, Tsumuri, and et cetera… including the change in perspective [?], I was always impressed because he thought of names that were simple but nothing alike.

Thoughts on Rakugo v1 [Manga]
So I recently got this in the mail, and just finished it last night. I’ve been really, really excited for this release since it got announced, and I’m definitely planning to collect the rest, and post my thoughts on them. Rakugo is one of my favourite anime of all time [I guess I’d class it as my ‘objective favourite’, with Yuri on Ice being my undisputed ‘subjective favourite’, if that makes sense], so I’ve been wondering how the manga version works.
These posts are just going to be my initial thoughts on the volume, probably without much structure or anything. Once the manga’s finished coming out in English I might do a more comprehensive review.
I should specify that basically every post I make about the manga is going to be 90% me comparing it to the anime. It’s really difficult to talk about this sort of thing on it’s own terms.
Anyway, thoughts under the cut.
Just to get it out right at the start, I knew from the start that the manga wasn’t going to be quite as fantastic as the anime. I could guess in advance that the rakugo performances wouldn’t be as engaging. And even though it hasn’t become incredibly relevant yet, I know that Miyokichi’s character in particular is more flat and one-dimensional in portrayal in the manga [which still makes me sad to hear].
I might be getting ahead of myself in talking about stuff from later in the volume, but I can at least say for sure that, thus far, the performances really aren’t as engaging as in the anime. Though really the only proper performance we got was Dekigokoro/On Impulse. I guess there was also the one performance Yakumo gave about the ghost painting, but that was sorta skimmed over. It feels weird to call it a proper performance. I did appreciate getting a scene that at least focused on Yakumo’s capabilities at playing female roles, though. I forget exactly when that first came up in the anime, but seeing it shown so early in the manga is nice. I can’t really compare that scene to the anime, though, since they just . . . didn’t adapt it at all, so there’s nothing to compare.
The Dekigokoro performance felt really disappointing, though, even if it was only because I’m comparing it to the anime. I should have guessed that the performances would be heavily edited down in the manga, compared to how lengthy they can be in the anime, but man was it still jarring to see that entire performance go by in like three pages. It felt so lackluster. It’s hard to judge this sort of thing on it’s own terms, but it really did feel like it didn’t do as good of a job at portraying the physicality of the performance, the body language, and Yotaro’s repressed but frantic nervousness. It all kinda went by too fast. We also obviously didn’t get anything like the whole back and forth talking between the robber, the home owner, and the landlord, which in the anime did a fantastic job at showing how a single performer can move fluidly between different roles and simulate an entire conversation on their own. The manga mostly focused on parts where just one person was talking at a time. It’ll be interesting to see how the later performances are done. [I swear to god, if they don’t do justice to stuff like the Shibahama or Shinigami performances I might just lose my mind]
Getting back to earlier in the volume, it surprised me that the first chapter actually makes up like half of the first episode of the anime. In general, the anime only really adapted chapters one and four, and completely skipped over two and three. Which is a bit sad, but eh. I think the extended blu-ray version of episode one probably covers most of it, but that’s not been subbed at all. It was also a bit odd how, since v1 ends on the note of Yakumo seeing Sukeroku’s ‘ghost’ in the car, then I think the only v2 content that made it into the first episode would be Yakumo’s performance, the drama of Yotaro getting nearly expelled, and Yakumo starting his story. I wonder how much that covers of v2, and how much got cut. We’ll see.
Most of chapter one [and four, from what I remember] got adapted pretty faithfully, but certain things didn’t quite make it. Which is fine. The only part that really stuck out to me in this sense was the part where Konatsu literally says ‘oh yeah, he’s gonna try and die and take the art form down with him in a ‘rakugo shinju’‘. That . . . surprised me. I’m pretty sure that’s only vaguely alluded to at best in, like, the entire first season of the anime. We just see him being a grumpy old man. But I forget. This scene was definitely not adapted, though, that’s for sure. I feel almost disappointed that it’s so explicitly spelled out to the audience in the first chapter [the official translation even literally uses the term ‘rakugo shinju’ just to make it even more obvious that it’s a title drop]. I really liked getting to the second season and being like ‘oh hey they finally explained the title, that’s neat, that sure was a bit of a mystery for ages’. But that’s not really an objective judgment of anything.
I can see why they cut chapters two and three entirely for the TV version of episode one, since they’re mostly just slice of life character introductions as we see more of the day to day lives of the characters as they go about their jobs. It’s still sad that they cut it, though. It would have made the presence of certain characters in season two WAY more natural. It was also nice to get to see more of Yakumo doing his thing, as said above. We also got a more clear note about how he spends time each day practicing different art forms, which I don’t quite think was said quite so clearly in the anime, at least not this early. It’s nice to get a bit of a deeper look into the day to day lives of everyone.
It was also pretty nice to at least get one or two new scenes of Yakumo and Konatsu being on bad terms with each other. Just to help hammer that in even more. There’s also a few new scenes with Konatsu in general, like when she’s, I believe, flipping through old scrapbooks to do with her dad while Yakumo and Yotaro are out of the house. I also feel like she wasn’t quite as explicit in the anime about saying that she practices rakugo each morning while Yakumo is asleep. I think she just vaguely references the fact that she practices it often.
There was also one . . . interesting scene where Yakumo is, I think, at a theater on his own and sees Sukeroku’s ghost sitting in front of him silently. Not sure what to think of that. Mostly because it was pretty short and not a lot happened beyond Yakumo being all ‘so you’re still haunting me’ or whatever like he usually is. It mostly just feels weird that this is the first time we see the ghost in the manga, and not at the car scene like the anime. Something about this scene here feels sort of . . . unnecessary, almost? But that’s mostly because it feels so similar to later moments in the story, and it obviously lacks any sort of surprise element for me. If I didn’t know to expect something like that, it would have been more meaningful, I imagine. I still feel like the car scene is a more interesting place to see the ghost for the first time, though.
And on that note, it kinda saddens me how the little moment of Yakumo teasing Konatsu about her crying to herself, and her defensively denying it, feels WAY more short and comedic in the manga. It’s literally just one panel long. I’m pretty sure that, even if it wasn’t very long, it at least felt a bit more genuinely emotional in the anime. Part of it’s also that in the manga we just get an exaggerated chibi face of Konatsu crying, whereas in the anime I feel like it doesn’t even fully show her face, which made it feel more personal and private, in a way. It came across way differently when it was shown in such an upfront, silly way. Not to mention Yakumo’s cartoonishly evil expression in the manga, compared to his more casual smirk in the anime. The more silly version isn’t necessarily BAD, it’s just . . . different.
I can’t help but be a bit worried that that might be indicative of at least some element of the female characters in particular not seeming as deep in the manga. If we’re going to potentially keep getting moments like this where the manga opts for comedy where the anime opted for subdued emotions and realism. It’s at least clear that that’s a bit of a blanket statement in general across the entire thing. The manga is way more heavy on the low-detail, ‘cartoony’ faces and reaction shots than I expected. Probably because this is the first Haruko Kumota manga I’ve actually read, so her ‘style’ is new to me. I think I was expecting something, well . . . closer in tone to the anime, which isn’t quite the case here. I expected it to feel fundamentally different, but it still felt pretty damn different. Yotaro in particular has a LOT of specific sorts of silly faces that just don’t quite make it into the anime, and I already thought he had lots of silly faces there. Wow. It’s kinda hard to describe, but it’s really noticeable.
As a whole, this is really making me appreciate and understand just how much the anime added to the experience, and to what degree it handled things in a different sort of tone entirely. I obviously expected stuff like the background art or the character designs or the performances to be less detailed in the manga, but it was certainly a surprise to see that most of the anime’s overall atmosphere and mood was mostly new. And yeah, we’ll see how later performances go, but this is making me appreciate the anime performances even more than before, since they’re clearly almost entirely original content. It’s one of the elements that clearly hinged largely on the director’s vision and his talents.
It makes me wonder if any manga readers felt annoyed or put off by the more ‘serious’ tone of the anime, or the notably extended performances. I just wonder if it’s a case where you naturally prefer the version you experience first, and anything different you see after that feels weird.
I might sound really critical of the manga, which I sort of am, but I still greatly enjoyed it, if only as a way to re-experience such a beloved story. For the most part I really, honestly enjoyed the different atmosphere, if only because it made it feel different and fresh. And there’s a LOT of ‘manga-only scenes’ that were really good content-wise and helped flesh this part of the story out a lot. I’m interested to see how the later volumes go. I imagine that the amount of cut content will probably notably drop as we get further in. I mean, if I’m guessing it right, with how many chapters this volume had, then episodes 2-13 of season one probably covered like thirteen or fourteen chapters, so I could see that feeling very 1:1 in content if not tone. Which would be nice. I’m less sure how the pacing of season two will feel, though. All I really know is that, across it’s twelve episodes, the final three adapted v10, aka the last volume. So that’s probably pretty 1:1 as well, adaptation-wise. I’m less sure how the first nine episodes of it adapted v6-9, though. That definitely feels like there may have been a lot cut. We’ll see.
I’m not really gonna bother rating these individual volumes, if only because I just can’t really judge it as it’s own thing. I might give the entire manga a raitng if/when I review all of it, but we’ll see.
Before I forget, I did enjoy the bonus thing at the back where the author explained a bit about how rakugo theaters operate. You can tell how enthusiastic and informed she is about the entire topic. It was also interesting to see her explicitly state that Yakumo’s whole ‘Rakugo is DEAD’ attitude is completely divorced from reality, and that real-life rakugo is still mostly fine. I do feel like it almost sort of diminishes the pull of that entire central conflict of the rush to preserve a dying art form that Yakumo wants to destroy, to know that it’s exaggerated for drama purposes and isn’t really realistic. But the core concept still holds. Especially in terms of how it’s discussed in the flashback story. Still.
ALSO, as another side note, I was sorta surprised at how certain elements of the translation were handled. Mostly it just felt jarring how basically all of the honorifics/terms/etc were kept in Japanese [ie: ‘shishou’, ‘yose’, ‘hanashika’, etc], but the names of the actual rakugo stories were translated [ie: ‘God of Death’, ‘On Impulse’, etc]. It’s basically the opposite of how the anime was translated, where we had English translations like ‘master’, ‘theater’, and ‘storyteller’, versus Japanese names like ‘Shinigami’ and ‘Dekigokoro’. It was kind of bizarre and took some getting used to. I’m less annoyed at them preserving a lot of Japanese elements, and more surprised that, if they kept all THAT in Japanese, why they bothered translating the rakugo story titles. Feels like a slightly inconsistent decision. They’re obviously not trying to avoid ‘overwhelming’ or ‘confusing’ readers by using Japanese words, so why not leave the story names untranslated, with translator’s notes in the margins [which they used for whenever any given Japanese term was first used]? Oh well. Not my place to nit-pick, I guess.
