“ at least you had a reason to get out of town. should have just gotten new friends. friendships die all the time — you keep talking like it so easy to break, or like i’m not hurt at all. i didn’t want all the shit to go down between us like it did. any of the times, but i’ve made it pretty fucking clear that staying away isn’t really working out. so if you want this to end, maybe you should hide out in your apartment indefinitely. ”
“ i left town temporarily to pursue my career. my family is here . . . my friends are here. i can't just skip town forever to avoid you. i belong here. this isn't easy for me, renner ! seeing you here hurts me. i'm saying this to protect myself. i can't keep letting myself get hurt because of you. it is broken now. we can't keep doing this circle . . . it's tearing me apart. ”

listens intently as she starts, but stomach drops instantly as fem comes to a close. it’s everything he hoped it wouldn’t be, only a couple things could have been worse, and breath is held for a moment in anticipation that she’ll admit one of those in wake. instinctively, hands withdraw from her thigh; mouth opens. closes. feels perplexed as fifty different thoughts battle for dominance. ❝ um, ❞ he manages to squeak out. ❝ i don’t know what to say. i don’t know . . . how to feel. ❞ note, he’s yet to fully separate their bodies, which counts for something. ❝ why — why would you do that ? ❞ he’s never demonized that type of work, in fact hadn’t thought much of that line of work, but the thought of another man running a hand down her thigh after slipping some money into lacey panties makes his stomach churn.
it was a bizarre feeling. butterflies erupting in her stomach at the small gesture of grabbing onto her legs, tugging her closer. legs resting in his lap as comfortably as his hand did on her thigh. on the other hand, the thought of this being the last bit of contact — physical or otherwise, made her want to throw up those butterflies. eyes widened at the one possibility that might make him leave, being very similar to what she had to tell him. she froze for a moment, licking at her lips as she met his gaze. "i'm not... just a dancer slash bartender at that club...." she finally spoke, eyes dropping from his to stare at his shoulder instead. "i... strip while doing the dancing part." piper's voice was small, a mixture of terror and feeling ashamed as she held her breath for his initial reaction.

mouth presses into a flat line and he’s nodding as if he understands, but renner has all but tuned out what she’s said. unconvinced. it wouldn’t be the first time a relationship drifted apart, nor the last. ‘ you don’t have to make up shit if you’re just trying to slow-fade this relationship. do you not feel how weird things have been between us ? ’ it was all he could feel, and he wasn’t about to admit it made his stomach churn.
"that's not— " she cut herself off, shaking her head. "you're not losing me." she decided on a different choice of words. "i'm just going through some stuff that i don't want to put on you, too. that's all." it was hard to keep part of her world separate from the man she had quickly fallen for,

❝ mm, ❞ he hums, mulling the thought over in his head as he watched her sit. and in spite of their argument, his hands move out of instinct to grab onto her legs and pull her closer on the couch until the space between them is dissipated. leaving his hand to find its home on her upper thigh. if this mess was going to end badly for the two of them, he might as well soak up the contact while it lasted. it already felt like they were dangling over a cliff. ❝ i’m not really sure that’s possible. unless you’re talking to a bunch of dudes behind my back. then, maybe. but if that’s the case, you need to tell me what’s up . . . ❞
there was no avoiding having this conversation. either she let him think she didn't have feelings for him and he walked away — or she came clean and he still walked away. either way, she still lost him. "no, stop." her head was shaking as she approached him and moved to sit next to him, her leg against his. "it's been weird because..." words trailed off, a hand raking through her hair as her mind sought another way out of this. "it's because i feel like if i tell you something, you're gonna want nothing to do with me anymore." @grimcoves
