Frantic (1988)
Frantic is an oddity on Harrison Fordβs filmography. Whilst he is best known as Indiana Jones, Han Solo and Jack Ryan and his action thrillers, there was a period in the 80βs when he was a dramatic actor with range and critics were noting him.

Ford is fine as was Emmanuelle Seigner, though I wonder if this couldβve used the eye of Brian De Palma rather than Polanski. **3.25/5** kevin2019: βFranticβ is an engrossing and well made film that easily builds up a genuine sense of mystery and intrigue from the very beginning. It is incredibly well crafted throughout with an immediately interesting opening gambit and Roman Polanski is a seasoned director and he knows precisely how to create a natural and rhythmic momentum to the proceedings and to then successfully maintain it at a certain level without any evidence of indecision on his part in terms of how the film ought to proceed in order to achieve its maximum potential and effectiveness. This results in a splendid film that effortlessly retains a compelling quality until the very end and it provides the perfect showcase for the romantic city of Paris even though it also makes you pause for thought about visiting there on Valentineβs Day.

Layla Moran: Premier League's Ownership Test Must Consider Human Rights

Football is the beautiful game. And one of these islandsβ most famous and proud exports.
More people are interested and engaged in football around the world than any other thing.
The Premier League is the pinnacle of professional football. It is the most-watched sports league in the world, broadcast in 212 territories to 643 million homes and a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people.
We have all been so proud of how the football family has shown its support for the Ukrainian people, especially the warmth of spirit towards Ukrainian footballers in the Premier League; Andriy Yarmolenko, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Vitaliy Mykolenko.
Former Chelsea and AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko has recently praised the solidarity displayed in football stadia up and down the country, commenting on Yarmolenkoβs goal for West Ham that: βIβm sure there was millions of people in Ukraine that watched that moment and itβs something thatβs very important for the people of Ukraine.β
The Premier League is a thing of pride in this country, and therefore it pains me to say that it has let people down, especially those who need our support the most.
While I appreciate that we mustnβt politicise football, football has an incredible soft power effect. We are kidding ourselves if we think no one is watching.
How on the one hand can we claim to be leaders on the world stage, upholding the international rules based order, and yet we allow our most prized cultural assets to act as a cloak that sportswashes the reputations of kleptocrats and despots.Β
I must concur with the sports minister Nigel Huddleston who told the DCMS committee that the sanctions placed on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich should act as a βwake-up callβ to the Premier League and should spearhead wholesale change as to who can own football clubs. Newcastle United, look away now.
While the minister is saying the right thing, he and the Premier League have failed to take action. The Premier Leagueβs fit and proper βOwnersβ and Directorsβ Test, which was introduced in 2004, the year after Abramovich took the helm at Stamford Bridge, is clearly not fit for purpose.Β
The minister said he wanted a βmore robustβ test,Β referencing it being a key recommendation from Tracey Crouchβs fan-led review last year, and yet the government have done nothing on it.
The Premier Leagueβs test for who can own our football clubs must clearly include human rights questions. The Premier League should change its rules now.Β
That being said, football fans, including Newcastle and Chelsea fans should not be taking the hit on this. It is those in the footballing authorities and the government that must be held to account.Β
Government restrictions mean that Chelsea arenβt allowed to sell any extra tickets except for those already obtained by season ticket holders. It isnβt in the interest of the sport or fans to have empty seats inside grounds.
So why couldnβt the government have allowed tickets to be allocated? Of course, Abramovich should not continue to make a penny from any asset owned in this country, but why punish supporters and hit them where it hurts the most?
Those seats could have been sold and the money could have gone towards helping humanitarian charities supporting the innocent victims of Putinβs war in Ukraine.
Chelsea supporters didnβt allow Abramovich to own their club, and he did for almost two decades.
Would this have happened without the Russian invasion of Ukraine, last yearβs purchase of Newcastle United by the Saudi state suggests not.
All too frequently we have witnessed Boris Johnsonβs inconsistent approach to morality, and it is time that the matter of football club ownership was taken into the hands of the law and away from politicisation with a rigorous fit and proper personβs test.
This is not a new idea, but wouldnβt it be nice if we could implement changes to prevent problems, rather than making them in reaction to a storm.
Too many clubs, which are key parts of communities and the daily lives of millions of people, have fallen victim to owners who fall far short of the standards we wish to see - and the stakeholders, the supporters, are the ultimate victims.Β
It is absurd that government is on the one hand saying we do need the tests and they will seek to bring the legislation through, but on the other hand, not putting these laws in place for the sale of Chelsea which they are in control of.
Football may be a game of two halves, and at the moment, the government are trailing at half time.
Layla Moran is the Lib Dem spokesperson for foreign affairs and international development and MP for Oxford West and Abingdon.

Images are from Love Is Love, a comic book anthology that is a collaboration between @idwcomics, DC Comics, and Marc Andreyko to benefit the survivors of the Orlando Pulse shooting (a gay nightclub) that occurred on June 12, 2016 resulting in 49 dead and 53 injured. The shooting was a clear hate crime along with being the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter and the deadliest incident of violence against the LGBT community in American history as well. All proceeds from this book (that costs $9.99) will be going to the victims, survivors, and their families viaΒ http://www.eqfl.org/Β (Equality Florida). It hit stores on December 28th, 2016 and features over 300+ comics creators contributing. Please I urge yβall to pick this one up.Β
In order the ones above were done by:
-Dan Jurgens (writer), Ale Garza (artist), Gabriel Cassata (colorist), Taylor Eposito (letterer).
-Taran Killam (writer), Barry Crain (artist), Giulia Brusco (colorist), Joshua Cozine (letterer).Β
-Teddy Tenenbaum (writer), Mike Huddleston (art and colors), Corey Breen (letterer).
-Dan Parent (writer, artist, colorist, and letterer).
-Joe Kelly (writer) and Victor Santos (art, colorist, and letterer).
-Marc Guggenheim (writer), Brent Peeples (art), Chris Sotomayor (colorist), Comicraftβs John Roshell (letterer).Β
-Daniel Beals (writer) and David Lafuente (artist, colorist, and letterer).
-Fernando Blanco (writer, artist, and colorist) and Jared K. Fletcher (letterer)Β
-Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (writer) and Stephen Bryne (art, color, and lettering).
-Jason Aaron (writer) and Jason Latour (artist, colorist, and letterer).Β
I thought about making several Tumblr posts with comics from it to highlight the entirety of wonderfulness on display. Alas Tumblr only allows 10 and all of the comics included cannot be found online yet. Seriously, everyone that made Love is Love possible, from the bottom of my heart, you have my eternal gratitude! The top is one of my favorites I could find while several others (To name a few more. Thereβs one by Amanda Deibert, Cat Staggs, and Janice Chang called Brave, one starring Poison Ivy/Pamela Isley by Jeff Parker, Janeβs World by Paige Braddock, Change by J.R. Rand, Jon Sommarvia, Leonard Ito, and Rus Wooton, Pride by James Tynion IV and Molly Knox Ostertag, another by Ruth and Christos Gage, Andrel Bressan, and Joshua Cozine, another by Al Ewing, Lee Garbett, Antonio Fabella, and Taylor Esposito, Know One Another by G. Willow Wilson and Max Vento, another by James Asmus, Ming Doyle, and Ryan Ferrier, another by Emma Hauxbois and Alejandra Gutierrez, another by Jay Edidin and Sophia Foster-Dimino, and another by Marguerite Bennett, Aneke, and Travis Lanham. Thereβs numerous others worth mentioning! The outpouring of support of love for this project is unbelievable and fantastic!). This collection feels sincere and is a big deal once one considers how the industry as a whole is when it comes to mainstream LGBT portrayal and content.Β
The read itself is a rollercoaster of tears, smiles, anger, and hope. However, the existence of Love Is Love is encouraging Iβd say. Despite yet another fucking tragedy that lead to the needless killing of human beings leading to its formation. Before the actual introduction by Wonder Woman (2017) director Patty Jenkins, thereβs a memorial for those that were tragically slain (name plus age). Donβt forget who they were.Β

I still cry about the Pulse shooting. I canβt help it. Their lives stolen from them. Cut short. For simply breathing and being themselves in what should of been somewhere safe...But wasnβt. :β( </3Β
Love is Love perfectly encapsulates everything I felt. Every single thought I had. Everything I desired to properly convey back in June could be found within those pages. My deep sorrow. My absolute shock. Trying to understand how any human being could do this. My shouting of βWHY?!β repeatedly. Until I utterly shattered into pieces and mourned. Then with my self better with lots of time and resolve renewed I began re-promoting a message of love and acceptance louder than ever (especially following last yearβs election in America).
Warning: Dan Didio, the guy that stopped the New 52 bloody marriage of Kate Kane/Batwoman and Maggie Sawyer under the creative team of Hayden Blackman and J.H. Williams III wrote something featuring her in it! It was like, so, since it is a tribute now youβre suddenly fine with the characterβs sexuality, hrm??? Doesnβt come off as genuine. Hence why I despise its inclusion. Unless heβs legitimately changed since 2013? I hope that is the case, at least.Β

Allen R. Maxey
Allen Roland Maxey, 79, of Gaffney, SC, passed on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at Cherokee Medical Center. Mr. Maxey was born April 14, 1940, in Seneca, SC, where he was a graduate of Seneca High School. He was captain of his varsity football and basketball teams and a member of the track team. After high school, he served six years in the South Carolina National Guard, completing his basic training at Fort Jackson. In 1965, Mr. Maxey graduated with a BS Degree in Business and Economics from Wofford College. He began his career with Milliken at Drayton Mills in Spartanburg and retired from Gaffney Manufacturing after 36 years with the company. He loved to watch television, especially golf, football, βGunsmokeβ reruns, and the Fox Business Channel to check his stocks. He was the rare person who would always support both Clemson and USC; he insisted on showing his state pride. He taught his grandsons how to drive his golf cart and he enjoyed riding around the neighborhood visiting with friends. Nothing made βBig Alβ happier than being with his family and sharing a laugh while teaching them facts about history from the Roman Empire to World War II. He was a wonderful husband and father, but if possible, an even better grandfather or βGranddada.β Mr. Maxey was a member of First Baptist Church of Gaffney and the Anthony Hopper Sunday School Class. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Nancy Smith Maxey; two daughters, Nan Manasas and her husband Steve of Spartanburg, SC and Sally Sullivan and her husband Chris of Charlotte, NC; as well as four grandsons, Andrew and Allen Manasas and Brooks and Blaine Sullivan. He was predeceased by his brother Clint Maxey and sister Lucille Perry. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at Floydβs Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Frank Lampard has made bold decisions whether that is enough to convince Abramovich we shall see
Frank Lampard has made the necessary aura of all good managers, this defeat does not undermine the impression he has made in just 12 months

Defeat does not undermine the impression he has made in just 12 months.
Whether that is enough to convince Roman Abramovich that Lampard is a man who has been a good man, is ready to succeed Maurizio Sarri we will see. The interest of Chelsea is genuine and there will be a vacancy if Sarri leaves for Juventus .
It would have been a good idea to have a good time,

Whatever Chelsea's intentions are, Lampard will now have conversations with owner Mel Morris to determine which direction Derby is heading in. Morris needed to be creative to keep the club in line with EFL spending rules β sell Pride Park to another of his company for Β£ 80 million and lease it back to Β£ 14.6 million profit β and a more delicate handling of the books is required this summer β despite the wealth of Morris, estimated at Β£ 500m, he is limited in being a benefactor who can keep pumping money and sales will Jayden Bogle, the 18-year-old right back given his Lampard debut, is expected to arouse interest and his calm head set Jack Marriott's goal in ten minutes to go.
But the Derby rally was too late.
It leaves the question whether Lampard had his start XI wrong. I selected Tom Huddlestone to offer midfield protection and went to diamond formation with Mason Bennett and Tom Lawrence in front. It largely worked in the first half to bypass the influence of Jack Grealish and John McGinn, but meant that the danger that Derby was wearing was not as powerful as it could be.

Marriott was brilliant on the bank at Leeds, so he was expected to play from the start.
Lampard has acted with conviction to try to turn events around and the character he brought to his players was once again clear. But in the end it is a fourth failure.
But in the end it is a fourth failure.
John Terry offered Lamprd and Jody Morris, his former Chelsea colleagues & good friends, words of comfort. They had pinched each other during the game.
As always in this absolute threat competition, the pain of the losers was exacerbated by the joy of the victors.

Being Catholic in Regency England
By Virginia Kohl Required television viewing for many people in the UK recently has been the BBC series Gunpowder, which tells the story of Robert Catesby and the Gunpowder Plot of of 1605. Most people know the story, which usually centres around Guy Fawkes, and they assume that it was he who spear-headed the attempt to blow up the houses of Parliament. Even those who know about Robert Catesby may not be aware of the reasons which pushed him towards such drastic actions, that of the persecution of Roman Catholics in England during this period of frequent change and change-about of the official religion in England, from the early days of the Reformation, through the introduction of the Book of Common Prayer during the reign of Edward VI, onwards through the reversal of laws by Catholic Mary I, and then another change during the reign of Elizabeth I.

Perhaps some might know of the plight of recusants during the English Civil Wars, and even the story of Charles II's escape after the Battle of Worcester, where he was helped in his endeavours not only by a Catholic family, the Penderels, but also by a Catholic priest by the name of Father Huddleston, who was brought to Charles' bedside as he lay dying, years later, more than twenty years after the event. But was that the end of religious persecution in England? With Charles II as king and the monarchy restored in 1660, a new age was about to begin, and tolerance was promised. But how did that translate to fact? What of the Catholics in England in later centuries? Anti-Catholicism began in 16th century England with the creation of the Anglican Church. This strong sentiment continued well into the regency era. Research for my debut novel taught me the many hardships Catholics faced during that time. Since the reformation, many believed that the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church threatened their freedom. Members were seen as a political and social threat that had to be suppressed. Since the establishment of the Church of England in 1534 Catholics were unable to freely practice their religion without persecution. In addition, they were not allowed to purchase land, inherit property, and hold seats in the government or any civil or military offices without receiving hefty penalties. These restrictions were gradually lifted through a set of laws. The first, known the Papists Act was passed in 1778. This allowed Roman Catholics to purchase and inherit land. Priests were also no longer taken and prosecuted for spreading the faith. The Papists Act also required Catholics to swear an oath of loyalty to the king. Over a decade later the Roman Catholic Relief Act 1791 was passed. This allowed them to practice their religion and be admitted to professions they were previously barred from. Young Catholic men were allowed to enter the army, however, it would be another twenty years before freedom of religion was granted to members of the military. This was particularly interesting to me, since my hero is an army Colonel. The heroine learns that "catholic soldiers had only been allowed to freely practice their faith since 1811βeleven years after his conversion."

Even though Catholics were granted rights, these came with restrictions. Priests had to be registered, and were not allowed to wear their cassocks in public. Worship services were not allowed to be held outside. Mass was often celebrated in private residences or chapels constructed on a Catholic landowners' grounds, although steeples and bells were forbidden. The first post-reformation outdoor chapel for public worship was built on the grounds of Lulworth Castle in 1786.

St. Mary's was constructed to resemble a standard garden abode at the owner's request. Thomas Weld was an influential promoter of emancipation and also assisted fellow Catholics fleeing from the French revolution. Roman Catholic couples wishing to marry had to do so in the in the Church of England for it to be legally binding. If this order was not followed, it would result in costly repercussions including the children being seen as illegitimate under the law. Regardless of their legitimacy, children could attend public schools or universities. Unless the family could afford the expense of enrolling them in a Catholic education on the continent, children were often taught at home. The final Act was passed in 1829 thanks to the work of an Irish barrister named Daniel O'Connell. This finally gave Catholic men the right to vote and have a seat in parliament.

The social discrimination that originated under King Henry VIII continued for decades after the emancipation laws had been passed. If Catholics were not entirely excluded from gatherings and prominent functions, they were disregarded or even harassed. Ideally a young Catholic woman would meet and make a match with a gentleman of her own faith. If this was not possible, she could marry outside of the church to avoid the socially unacceptable existence of spinsterhood. An interfaith marriage, previously forbidden by law, would only be accepted if the couple was married by an Anglican officiant. These unions could also be celebrated in two ceremonies to validate both religious beliefs. Regardless of an individual's personal faith, taxes were paid by all citizens to maintain the many parishes throughout the nation. ~~~~~~~~~~
Virginia Kohl found that this valuable information helped her to write strong characters who "knew first hand how cruel and heartless society could be". You can learn more about their journey in True Love Comes to Delaford.
Virginia has been fascinated with the regency era since discovering Jane Austen's works at the age of eleven. While others dreamt of Willoughby, it was Colonel Brandon who stole Virginia's heart from the very beginning. Originally from Germany, she shares her Texas home with her illustrator mother and faithful rescue dog. When not passing her love of learning on to her students, this college math professor enjoys reading, writing, and being an active member of her local writer's guild.
