For our earl to be named after a Jewish prophet known for miracles and strong faith, leading Israelites back to worshipping one god? Rather ironic, wouldn't you think? After all, our earl recants his faith and seems to be leading those around him towards damnation....

Plugging proper names into the translator doesn't really translate them, though. In Japanese, they don't actually say Ciel.

So, Elias might be turned into something like Eraiasu -- E-rai-a-su -- or even Īraiasu, where the "Ī" is pronounced like English Ē -- Ī-rai-a-su.

It's a bit like how I've been hoping for an anagram of Ciel, like Elic, which would probably become Erikku, just like Eric Slingby's first name in Japanese:

I must say it's a bit of a stretch to suggest the character creator on the anime staff probably chose Alois based on Elias, though I suppose it's not entirely out of the realm of possibilities.

In neither language do those two names -- Alois and Elias -- really sound too similar. They do sound kind of nice as sibling names, though.

It's an interesting idea that Sebastian might like calling him "my lord" as a way to call him by name without saying "Elias"; Yana-san definitely enjoys using wordplay. And she seems equally fond of using ironic names, such as the demon being partly named after a French inquisitor and demonologist. Plus, Sebastian means "revered", and our earl often puts him down and/or keeps him in his place, instead of revering him.

I can't say for certain that Elias wouldn't be used, but I'm still holding onto Elic... for now.

How do you feel about my suggestion for our ciel’s real name? It is a name rejected by our ciel, and one that Sebastian would never address him as unless he accepted himself first, then it would become a callback to Agni and Soma’s relationship. Agni worshiped Soma as his God and his master, Sebastian’s (second) catchphrase is telling Ciel “Yes, My Lord”.

this is probably why they went with “Alois”
