` I think we’ve talked about the versatility of ‘saa’ before on this page, but just to reiterate, in this context, he is meaning as “There there, yes, like that”

**I took a liberty using the phrase “righteous light” when the word is just “light” there. The reason for this that this is another song where Atsushi is contrasting pretty/ugly worthy/unworthy despite making these opposites always kiss like your favorite barbie dolls- honestly he loves doing this (see 小さな森の人 for a superb, overt example). And by saying something like “inside the downpour of light” and using 明かり as opposed to say 光 which also means light, apparently in a legal sense 明かり can also stand for one’s innocence of, say, crimes, etc. You can extrapolate this to innocent of sin, etc. As he seems to already be taking up the cliche old theatre metaphors of “the bad guy is always going to be the gnarliest looking dude on the stage”, I think he may be doubling down on the perceived- emphasis on perceived- purity of either himself as he presents himself on the stage or this girl he’s taken out (depending on which thread of the story you follow). She’s basking in a downpour of light which is conveying her sweet innocence, which, well, this is Sakurai, we’ll see how long she lasts in that state ahahaha. And by contrast, he is saying the audience probably views him as perfect in some sense when witnessing him on stage in the exaggerated spotlight. But this is why I have pushed that word ‘righteous’ in there to cover the full field.

^I originally had “women have dreams of falling in love” here, but after seeing a live performance of this song and watching Atsushi grab his junk for that line, I decided to blur the line a little to reflect what he was clearly thinking lmfao.

T/N: Hi hello back again with another out of order song because it’s been eating away at me. It's a little long again, but if you're up for it, I saw an interesting story play out with this one and wanted to share.

OK, there’s a lot to unpack here in this song. Hopefully I don’t stretch too much and it all makes sense. I think there are two storylines happening in this song at once, that are both happening separately, weaving in and out of each other, and happening on top of each other simultaneously almost like two realities playing at once, because what happens in one story thread is a reflection of what’s happening in the other story thread. Are you still with me? 😂

Story one is the story we start out with- to put it bluntly, it really looks like we’re out on a date. The scene is set- it’s a bit cliche but you have the poor street busker playing a bitchin tune while a pretty girl is on our boy’s arm. The vibe is good, so let’s dance. Nothing at all amiss here. Nothing at all.

At about this next section the story starts to warp. The shining innocence of the girl and the sparkling look in her eyes begins to melt into the speaker as he now becomes the one in the spotlight- on stage- and we are presented with Sakurai himself in front of an adoring audience. Bathed in bright yet ephemeral light of course he looks like a perfect being to that oblivious audience. Men get beautiful ballads and it’s women who get to fall in love. Or so he claims here in this moment.

The song now really seems to become an extension of 太陽に殺された, and we are back to grappling with stardom, what it means, how honest it actually is, and to be frank, Atsushi’s imposter syndrome. He envisions himself now stripped bare on the stage throwing out his arms and grinning at nothing and no one- because everyone has disappeared off somewhere else. A grim, bitter moment, and likely a fear (that thank god we all know never came to pass).

In the breakdown it’s almost like we’re getting to hear Atsushi’s inner monologue while on stage in front of us (and also probably of our boy looking to woo that girl)- if he can just turn it up a little bit more, he’ll finally have enchanted us all and he’ll be safe. Just a little more sparkle, a little more razzle-dazzle, and he’ll vindicate himself. What a bitter song of performing for love.

The next line we melt again through to the other story happening- someone is screaming. In this world, I think it’s safe to say it’s Atsushi. On the dream date, welll…..maybe the date went really well and he got to home base??? Considering what comes next. Either way we’re caught up in the fervor now so grab his hand and let’s dance- close your eyes and….

Now he’s left lying exposed in the middle of a bed wondering why he’s so scared now that he’s been literally and metaphorically stripped bare. I’m going to go super fucking meta with this, and taking into account that this song was written in ’92-’93, I mean…why wouldn’t he be playing the field? Except now who he’s become and his perceived stage persona is playing a part in pulling the girls he gets to sleep with. It feels like that kind of insecurity— who is he really without this new stage persona, and is it the persona who got the sex or he himself? Do these girls even like him for who he really is? It’s scary, and there’s a heavy dose of buyer’s remorse mixed in there like “shit, maybe I really shouldn’t have…”

Because in the end we are spun around again and see that really HE is the ugly scarred busker that the pretty couples walk by and toss a coin to for his intoxicating music without paying him any serious or sincere thought. He was really just the ugly busker in the end. But haha, it’s fun, right??? You’re entertained, right?????

Every single hat off to Atsushi and Imai for another insane complex unhinged banger that still makes you want to take your clothes off even though Atsushi’s bitter as fuck for most of it. And thanks to all of you reading for humoring my probably crazy commentary. But as I was translating this song, this is the story I saw, how it melted and wove in and out of itself. So I thought, why not write it down. There is always the danger, too, of conflating a song with Atsushi directly- I'm very very aware of it- but again this song seemed like such a natural extention of 太陽に殺された that it was hard to see it any other way. ヴァンパイアパニックの王道を行きつつ、ミュージカルであり、ちょっと変わった演出もあり、アメリカで黒人、有色人種として生きることを背景にいろんな考察を考えたくなるような全部盛りの作品でありました。

映画を見る前は「権力を持った白人は吸血鬼だよ、って話なのかしら」と単純に考えていたけどそうではなかったなと。キリスト教が白人の言葉で語られる押し付けられた教えという極端な方向には行かないけれど、土着の呪術的な儀式があったり、サミーのお父さんが牧師だけどその言葉にサミーは単純には従わないのでそこら辺に屈折は感じる。サミーは音楽をどうしても捨てられないし、お父さんは悪魔と踊ることになるなんて脅すし、実際その通り吸血鬼を歌で呼び寄せてしまう。しかしスリムがブルースは聖なるものであり、黒人の心の奥底から生まれてくるものなのだと語るシーンもある。双子はお互いの繋がりを感じて大事に思っているけど、究極のところでわかりあうことはない。なんか屈折を屈折のまま受け入れて、生きていくことを選択するお話なのかもな。

87ちゃんの言っていた越境の根源的な恐怖を描いたのかなという解釈も面白い。しかし本当にそこまで考え（られ）ているのかはエンタメに特化してる面を考慮に入れると違うかも知れない…てのはあるw

サミーが歌う横で過去や未来の人物が歌い踊り出てくるシーンはなんかちょっとダサみがあったけど、面白かったwマイルズケイトンが歌い出す場面は本当にとんでもなかったな。才能がすごい。

(1). Forgive me for being a theater nerd for a little while, but I wanted to note here that the phrase Shu is using here translates literally to "the king wearing black clothes". Specifically, I want you to pay attention to the term 黒衣.

He uses the こくい reading in the lyrics, which very distinctly does mean black clothes, but what is really important to note is the other reading. Namely, 黒衣 can also be pronounced くろご/ くろこ (if you're a KnB fan like me, you might know where I'm going with this.)

くろご were (and I think still are) traditionally stagehands- or what we call the running crew in modern day-in live kabuki theater who handled things like moving props and backdrops, working lighting, etc. And they were called this because they wear black clothing to blend in with the background. (Backs of pretty much any theater I've ever seen have been black.)

(Fun fact: this is actually where some people theorize the modern day misconception of ninja wearing all black came from-because what better way to hide a stealthy character from the audience than to have them dress as a stagehand?)

So while Shu uses the reading specifically for 'black clothing', I think it's likely this phrase is supposed to carry that double meaning. Especially if you consider Bunraku, or traditional 'puppet theater' in which giant, often fairly realistic puppets are used in place of actors. These puppets are often so large that it takes several people to work with them, and yes, these 'puppetmasters' also wear all black for the same reason.

Looking at Valkyrie's whole aesthetic, and how くろご itself projects an image of someone in theater who is unseen, but 'pulling all the strings'-so to speak-and the way in the MV Mika gestures at him when he sings this line, along with calling himself "king", probably makes this a very intentional implication.

(2). This is less of a translation note and more me trying to explain my thought process on how I translated it. Mika's line is ambiguous as to whether he is referring to someone else or himself as 'an awakening marionette', but I like to think that part of it IS Mika referring to himself.

Considering that he actually moves like a marionette in that part of the MV, Valkyrie's entire thing revolving around him being Shu's 'doll' (regardless of how true it is outside of that), and the line later about 'the grand guignol', it makes sense in the song-I think-that Mika is kind of the one they are talking about.

Plus, the part with the angel-only Mika says the line 'look at me alone', and he has several times before been associated with angels by other characters. It's fitting too, with Shu's 'king dressed in black' imagery.

The chorus too, at first Shu is just singing it, but by the end Mika joins him; I reflected this in the lyrics a little, since again, jp is very ambiguous sometimes when it comes to subjects and plurality. But it gives me the impression in the song about Shu enthralling enchanting a puppet to then draw their audience in with their art.

Hopefully what I said has made sense. Again that's just how I've been looking at it, so you're free to think differently!

(3). "Grand Guignol" here is French for 'giant puppet', which is most likely Mika referring to himself, as stated above. However, I've come across some more interesting theater history here that I think is relevant.

You see, Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol was also a theater in Paris that opened up in 1897, lasting till a bit after the second World War. It was named after a wooden puppet from something akin to Punch and Judy shows, with acts often containing a lot of social commentary. It then quickly became infamous for its more disturbing, schlocky, and gory productions, heavily based on true crime.

Namely, it was considered possibly one of the first sources of modern day slasher horror, or even just horror productions in general, as it was quite unlike any other theater of its time. It resonated a lot with the public of Paris at the time, as they often portrayed people who were considered 'dregs of society', and blatantly showing off seedier sides of life.

They used a lot of very realistic (for the time) makeup and effects to portray all sorts of horrible injuries and disfigurements, and while subject matter changed under different theater directors, you could find a lot of both comic elements as well as brutal portrayals of the macabre mixed in with each other.

Honestly, it's really fascinating to look into and I do encourage you to look it up on your own time, though viewer discretion is advised; there might not be that many surviving visuals, but I'm not joking about some of the special effects.

Considering that Mika is a self-admitted horror fan, I don't think this is a coincidence. It's influential enough on modern horror/slasher films that often 'Grand guignol' is a term used to refer to any sort of violent, horror-themed art, and consider the precursor to stuff like 'Saw' or 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre'.

These lyrics are not a word for word translation, and are an adaptation of the original song's message, made to (pretty much) fit in with the original vocals. It's my interpretation, but I wanted to keep the meaning close to what it was in Jp while coming across as what one would write in an En song.

東映チャンネルで「狂った野獣」をやっていて、死ぬほど笑った後に次は「ポルノの女王 にっぽんSEX旅行」と出てきたので、しばらくついでに観ようと思ってイトメンの「チャンポンめん」作りながら観てたら、出演者が何処かで見たことのあるキャスト。

（チャンポンめん懐かしいな。笑）

主人公が「いとしのマックス」とか「今夜は踊ろう」を歌っていた荒木一郎。

（この人、俳優もやってたんだ）

もう一人の女主人公が何処かで見たことのある女優でしばらく見てたら思い出して思わず、声に出してしまった。

「ゼイ・コール・ハー・ワン・アイ〜血まみれの天使〜のクリスチーナ・リンドバーグじゃないか！信じられん、こんなんに出とったんか！」と夜中に画面に向かって驚愕する僕。

（凄い！凄過ぎる！笑）

爆弾製造を生業とする女好きな京都の青年の五味川一郎（荒木一郎）とスウェーデンの麻薬密売組織から日本に派遣されてきた美人運び屋のイングリット・ヤコブセン（クリスチーナ・リンドバーグ）が主人公のサイケデリック青春ロードムービー。

地元京都では一向にモテない五味川が一念発起、愛車に乗り込み何故か東京羽田へ女漁りに向かう。

偶然出会ったイングリットのナンパに成功、意気揚々と愛車に乗り込み何故かまた京都に戻る五味川ご一行。

京都のオシャレなボロアパートに戻り連日、イングリットと緊縛プレイに励む五味川一郎。

（最初からだけどもう、ストーリーがおかしすぎる）

いろいろあって二人は別れる。

途中、イングリットは京都のクラブで違う男グループにマリファナパーティーに誘われその場で無理やりやられてしまう。

身も心も傷ついたイングリットを明け方の四条大橋で偶然見かけ再び彼女と暮らし始める五味川。

二人きりの生活が幾日か続いたある日、新聞でイングリットが麻薬犯罪容疑で警察に追われていることを知った一郎は、彼女を守ろうとするが時すでに遅し、日本の密売組織にばれ、警察がイングリットを連行。

エンディングはここでは書���ないが、昔の東映らしいセンチメンタルで笑える終わり方。

五味川とイングリットのセックスシーンの最中に毎回部屋に入る西日に東寺の影が映し出されるところが自分的にツボすぎて、「なんでやねん、毎回東寺の影って。オシャレすぎるやろ、京都買いますの実相寺昭雄監督かよ」と笑いながら真夜中、テレビに向かって突っ込む僕。

昭和７０年代の京都の景色満載。

五味川のアパートが近いのか何故か東寺がしょっちゅう出てくる（笑）。

朝方、四条大橋でタクシーに乗り込む五味川とイングリットの場面が６０年代フランス映画のようで頭から離れない程オシャレなシーンでした。

[好日の素…民謡に親しむこと。]

　 今日、わたしたちの耳に 聴こえてくる音楽のほとんどは ポップス、ロック、ジャズ、クラシックといった いわゆる西洋音楽なのですが、 それじゃあ日本の音楽ってなんだろう？ じぶんが暮らしている土地に伝わる トラッドミュージックとは？ということを ここしばらく考えるようになりました。 そこで思い浮かぶのが、民謡。 　 この頃では 若い方々や海外の方も 興味を持っていると聞いて、 そういえばわたしが グローバルミュージックを聴くようになった きっかけも 民謡だったな、と思い出したのです。 　 では、地域に伝わる民謡を どれだけ知っているでしょうか…。 　 富山ですとまず 思い浮かぶのは「こきりこ節」。 学生時代、音楽の教科書だったか愛唱歌集だったかにも 載っていましたし、 わずかながら参加していた合唱団で 合唱曲にアレンジされた作品を歌ったことも。 それから「越中おわら節」、「といちんさ」、 「麦屋節」、「せりこみ蝶六」…。 子どもの頃からなんとなく 触れていたものから 大人と呼ばれる年齢になって知ったものも。 　 能登について言うと 夏の祭りの夜に踊られる 門前町黒島地区の「八千代栄節」。 家族が亡くなり、ルーツが薄れていくのを 感じていた上に この度の地震もあって、 忘れたくない、失いたくないと思うようになりました。 　 どの民謡も、 それぞれの地域の風景や そこに暮らす人たちのことが 垣間見られる歌詞になっていることが多く、 さながら 古と今をつなぐ窓のようなものなのかもしれません。 そして、歌うひとがいる限り その歌は 生き永らえることができる、と思っています。 　 ふるさとの歌を聴かせて、と言われることが この先あるかどうかはわかりませんが、 その際には 一節でも歌えるようでありたい、と思うこの頃です。

[日々是食べたい！… 塩]　

　 食べたい、というよりは 日々お世話になってます、という調味料ですね。 料理はもちろんのこと、 お菓子や飲み物にも、はたまた 生活のさまざまなシーンで 古くから使われてきたもので、 種類もさまざまあります。 　 おおきく分けると 精製塩と自然塩、そして 自然塩でも海水塩、岩塩、湖塩などに 分かれるそう。 自然塩はミネラルなどを含むせいか うまみや甘みなどが 産地によって少しずつ異なるようです。 また、ハーブなどを加えた フレーバーソルトもありますね。 目下、手元には海水塩を中心に 数種類の自然塩があって、 目的に応じて使い分けています。 産地は国内だと能登や淡路、海外だと イタリア、タイ、ハワイ、モンゴルなど。 　 特に最近よくつかっているのが タイの塩田の塩。 お土産でいただいたのですが 粒がおおきいので ひとまずスープにつかってみたら とてもまろやかでおいしい！ これはもっといろいろつかいたい、と思って ソルトミルを買ってしまいました！ 　 産地やフレーバーで 個性豊かな塩の世界。 お気に入りを見つけるのも たのしいと思います。

実験するみたいに目をぎゅうと細めてコンタクトの洗浄液をケースに流し込む。とびきり良い映画を観たあとは、なんかこう、ぜんぶ立体に聴こえて、ぜんぶ鮮明にみえる。あまりに見えすぎている、という感じ。

思い立って新宿から日比谷までレイトショーを観に1時間半かけて歩く。気まぐれに入った喫茶店があまりにタバコ臭かった。「あのヘッドフォンの人かっこいいね」と言う友達に、「そう？カッコつけすぎじゃない？」と答える。そこからずっと歩いて、赤信号で立ち止まって、たまに思い切り走って笑ったりした。夜に蝶々ってそういえば見たことがないなとか思いながら、脳みそのずっと奥のほうではあなたのことばかり考えていた。疲れてしまった。自分を良いように魅せるとか、価値があるように振る舞うとか。己が太陽のようにまっさらで溌剌としているように感じられる日もあれば、ただただ静かに降り注ぐ小雨に涙が出るほど心の糸が張り詰めている日もあるし、ほんとうに疲れた。もう多分彼からの連絡は来ないけど、別にそれでいい。「何も無い花こそ本当、花だけ本当」「嘘じゃないから」という歌詞について考える。生きているだけで汚れるというのは本当かもしれない。ぜんぶ疲れたから草むらに裸で寝転んで、湿気った土に頬をぴたりとくっつけたい。パスタを素手で不細工に食べたいし、名前も知らない誰かとキスをして、産まれたての赤ん坊のように泣き出したい。もう誰もわたしの何も知らなくて良いとさえ思う。わたしは家族と友達がだいすきで、雨上がりの匂いや木の葉の揺れに感動できる感性を大切にしていて、この世界をとびきり愛している（そして世界もまた愛を返してくれる）そこらへんのただの女の子だということ。（22歳はもう女の子じゃないかもしれないけれど“おんなのこ”という響きがすき）どんなに急いでいてもコンビニのレジではバーコード面を表にして商品を差し出すし、エレベーターではみんなが降りるまで開閉ボタンを押す。荷物を抱えながら階段を登る人に手伝いましょうかと声をかけようか悩んで、通り過ぎて、でもまた戻って頑張って声をかける。一度も会ったことがない人でもそれが大切な人の友人で病に伏しているのだとしたら一番美しい花を買って見舞いにいく。自分の内側にいる幼くてあどけない、やさしいわたしがいつだってその手を握り返してくれる。100年後には何もかも閉じてしまう物語だから、せめて今だけはわがままでいたい。でも傲慢なのはいやだ。全部欲しい。一つ残らず見たい。叶うなら恐竜がどんな姿見で空を飛ぶのかみたかった。光を反射する鱗肌と、重たいその足音が大地に響き渡るのを聞きたかった。お母さんがまだわたしと同い年だった頃、彼女と会って話をしてみたかった。100の異なる人生を同時進行で生きてみたい。豪雨の中でワルツを踊りたい。自分の子どもを産みたい。ずっと一緒にいたいと思えるような人と出逢いたいし、ほんとはその運命を最後まで守り切れるほど成熟した女性でありたかった。

0時を少し過ぎて映画が終わると、終電が近いのか、エンドロールを見届けないまま人がぞろぞろ帰っていった。スクリーンライトに照らされて、綿毛みたいに細い埃が頭上で舞っているのを目で追う。降り注ぐ奇跡と、約束された明日。また「花だけ本当」という歌詞について考える。わたしも花の香りの名前を名付けてもらったのに、「本当」を生きてはゆけない哀しさ。（わたし、ほんとうはこんな性格じゃないのにな）と思う行動ばかりとってしまって、いつも後悔している気がする。でももういい、全部。どうでもいい。人がいなくなって不気味な白さを放つ駅で、なぜか笑みが、走り出した足が止まらなかった。「それ、罪滅ぼし？」 「お前みたいなやつの書いた作品が世に出回るなんて害でしかないから」 映画の台詞がしゃぼん玉みたいに脳裏を過っては消える。月9のドラマの主題歌を聴く。これはだれの人生？大好きな音楽を聴くと、いろいろな景色を想像する。割れるガラス、草原、海、笑い声、蝶々、風、カーテン、白、眩しい光、流れ星、男の子、裸足。やっぱり幸せかも、と思った。はやく戦争が終わりますように。もっと書きたいけどここまで。明日は図書館へ行こう。
