Ryueiinari-jinja: A Hidden Inari Shrine in the Heart of Tokyo・隆栄稲荷神社：下谷神社の境内に佇む小さな稲荷社

Ryueiinari-jinja is a small shrine dedicated to Inari, the deity of rice cultivation and harvest. This made me wonder—why would an Inari shrine be located in this urban Tokyo neighborhood, a city that has been a major metropolis for over a century?

By the mid-1800s, Edo (modern-day Tokyo) had a population exceeding one million, making it one of the largest cities in the world at the time. Yet, some areas still remained dedicated to agriculture.

Looking at historical maps from 1824 and 1854, I found numerous rice paddies and Inari shrines concentrated in what is now Asakusa. By 1854, urbanization had spread, with fewer rice fields and a noticeable decline in Inari shrines—today, no agricultural land remains in the area.

Yet, Ryueiinari-jinja endures. While the fields have vanished, the shrine continues to serve the community, preserving its historical and spiritual significance.

Though small, this shrine offers a fascinating glimpse into Tokyo’s past—when agriculture and urban life coexisted, and where traditions persist despite a changing landscape.

2017年、東伏見稲荷神社。

社殿裏にあるたくさんの鳥居が並ぶお塚参り。お社ににたどり着くと神々しい陽射し。

京都の伏見は酒蔵の町

京都の伏見といえば、伏見稲荷大社が有名ですね。

その一方で、酒蔵の町としてもよく知られていたりします。

月桂冠に黄桜に、松本酒造に。有名な酒造メーカーが並んでいます。

去年の秋くらいに仕事で近くに行ったので、少しぶらぶらしてきました。

これは松本酒造。

桃の滴が有名なのですかね。

川沿いにあって、春になると菜の花も咲くようで、絵になる景色が見られるかもしれません。

大正時代からある酒造で、正面の佇まいからも歴史が感じられます。

見学もできるようですね。

ここから少し離れたところに、月桂冠大倉記念館やキザクラカッパカントリーなどもあります。

そのあたりも行ってきたので、次の記事でも写真を載せていきますね。

さて、酒蔵の町・京都伏見は、日本三大酒どころの一つだそうです。

あと二つは、兵庫県の灘、広島県の西条です。

京都の観光地というと、やはり祇園・四条・清水エリアが人気ですが

京都伏見のこの辺りも、もっと観光客が増えてくるのでは？と、勝手に見込んでいます。

最近は、インバウンド観光客向けなのか、日本酒の飲み比べができるお店やお酒の美術館もできているほどですから。

京都四条の錦市場にも、日本酒の飲み比べができるお店があります。人気ですよ。

錦屋台村が人気ですね。

京都伏見の酒蔵の町には、あの寺田屋や十石舟、伏見桃山城もありますし、

もう少し人が入ってきてもいいのになぁと思いながら、散策しておりました。

春になったら人が増えるのかもしれませんね。

桜が咲く頃の十石舟の風景写真は、Instagramでもよく見かけます。

最近はInstagramでの宣伝効果もすごいみたいで

そこまで有名でなかったはずの長岡京市の光明寺や

同じ伏見区の城南宮などがおしゃれになって参拝者も増えたので驚いています。

城南宮は、昔から知ってたりしますが、

今までと違う参拝者が増えたように感じられますね。

Instagramの影響ですね、きっと。

インスタ映えを意識した写真をよく見かけます。

そういう演出もされているようです。

伏見稲荷は、外国人の参拝者ばかりです。⛩️のキーホルダーもよく売れてますし、狐の小物もあったような気がします。

あと、狐のお面があったような。

伏見稲荷の狐さんもPUMAのロゴみたいでかっこいいです！

で、伏見稲荷から酒蔵の町の伏見桃山あたりまでは、歩いて行ける距離ではありません。

電車で14分位ですね。歩くと結構遠いです。

行きたい���所によっては、伏見桃山駅よりも中書島駅のほうがいいかもしれませんね。

1つ隣の駅になりますので、もう少し時間がかかります。

京阪本線で移動するのがスムーズではないかと。

ただし問題があって、京阪本線は京都駅からは乗れないので

観光される方は、京都駅から地下鉄東西線で四条駅に出て

人気観光エリアの祇園・四条・清水あたりを観光されてから

徒歩圏内にある京阪本線の祇園四条駅か、三条駅から

伏見稲荷、伏見桃山駅方面へ向かわれると良いのかも。

途中、東福寺もあります。

もう少し便利な移動手段があれば、伏見桃山あたりももっと賑やかになるのかもなぁとか思ったりして。

思ってたよりもちょっと静かなんですよね。

素敵な街だからもったいないなぁ。

秋ぐらいに行ったからだろうか。

もう少し賑やかになってほしいですね。

Sangaku Saturday #4

In the previous info post, we went over the debate on the religious aspect of sangaku, and the fact that the absence of prayers on these tablets was more puzzling to some than the mathematics. As such, the tablets are not ema prayer tablets, but donations, which usually don't feature prayers on them. Case in point, some consecrated sake and French wine seen at Meiji-jingû in 2016.

Beyond wishing for good fortune and health, such donations serve two very worldly purposes: to contribute to the life and prestige of the shrine or temple (having a famous contributor makes the shrine famous by association), and to advertise the donor in return, as their name is on display. See this large torii at Fushimi Inari Taisha paid for by TV Asahi (テレビ朝日).

With that in mind, Meijizen's cynical comment from 1673 that sangaku aim "to celebrate the mathematical genius of their authors" may not far from the truth. The authors of sangaku are looking to gain notoriety through the publicity that the shrine or temple provides. But was the bemused Meijizen the target audience?

More on that in a couple of weeks. Below the cut is the solution to last week's problem.

The solution to the first problem (below the cut in this post) is the key. Name K, L and M the intersections of the three circles with the horizontal line. Then, by using that previous result,
