Skye’s little phrase “airmail” was picked up from her father, who was a pilot for the majority of his life. 

When she was a child, and caught in moment of despair as to whether she had a true place with her family or not (fun fact: she’s adopted), he comforted her by admitting he considered she to be a gift from someone faraway; who, through the winds of fate, made her way to their cozy home. A gift that brightened all of their lives; his precious airmail. From that day onward, he often called Skye “airmail” as a nickname of sorts.

Nowadays, she herself uses “airmail” as a term of endearment for those she cares about, a little or a lot. They’re like what her father said she was: gifts sent to her through fate’s winds. You could say such a belief is childish or cheesy, but it is still what Skye believes without any guilt.
